Regal Heights BIA representatives Tony Bolla (left) and chair Elena Simonetta are concerned ending the time-based transfer program on the 512 St. Clair West streetcar route will impact local businesses. The TTC announced it will stop issuing time-based transfers on the line in early September.
End of time-based transfers bad for business: BIA RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The removal of time-based transfers from St. Clair Avenue streetcars has shop owners on
the avenue confused and worried about the impacts to their business from the impending change. The transfers will stop being issued as of early September, when the new streetcar fleet be-
gins running on the 512 line. Since the new vehicles accept Presto, the TTC says it’s phasing out the transfers, which currently allow for unlimited trips on the 512 in either direction for two-
hours. That perk, which is not available anywhere else on the TTC, makes transit an attractive option for St. Clair shoppers

FIGMENT Toronto, an outdoor arts festival, took over Dufferin Grove Park on Aug. 19. Attendees were treated to a variety of events at the free, all-ages show. It is known for its interactive arts, which were on display in the park. Some highlights this
year included a do-ityourself project to personalize your own sunhat, an interactive maze with under the sea vibes created by grade 6 students from Hawthorne II Bilingual Alternative School, a celebratory art mosaic that adds a modern, participatory layer to the tra-
ditional Canadian genre of landscape art through individual storytelling and more. FIGMENT began in 2007 in New York City, N.Y. as a free participatory arts event with the goal of advancing social and personal transformation through creativity.

JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com A Toronto teacher killed Sunday, Aug. 13 during a terror attack in Burkina Faso is being remembered as an exceptional educator who thought outside the box. Most recently, Tammy Jane Mackay Chen, 34, worked as a French immersion teacher at Glen Ames Senior Public School in the Beach from 2011 to 2013. Chen, who was sixmonth pregnant, was living in Burkina Faso while she completed a Ph.D at the University of Cambridge. Her husband Mehsen Fenaiche, a Senegalese citizen, also died in the attack. The Montreal native was one of two Canadians killed when suspected Islamic extremists reportedly starting firing at a Turkish restaurant in the west African nation’s capital city of Ouagadougou. Ca-
nadian citizen Bilel Diffalah was also among the 18 killed in the act of terrorism. Hilary Scott’s now-18year-old daughter Brynna was one of Chen’s pupils when she taught Grade 8 French at Glen Ames. "She was an incredible teacher who caught the attention of everyone who knew her, in and out of the classroom as she was so beloved," Scott told The Beach Mirror via Facebook. Chen also taught both of Ward 32 Councillor MaryMargaret McMahon’s children when they attended the Williamson Road middle school. "She was fantastic at teaching the kids," said McMahon, whose now 18-yearold daughter Becca considered Chen her favourite teacher. "She was big on social justice. She had the kids out volunteering in the

Chen, who taught both of her daughters at Glen Ames. "Tammy went well beyond the scope of a teach-
er’s responsibilities. She was compassionate, warm, supportive, and a wonderful role model," she shared during a recent interview. Aziz said Chen opened her daughter Siena’s eyes to humanitarianism connecting her with two pen pals in Burkina Faso. Chen also helped her daughter work through some issues involving bullying. "She was a wonderful person in so many ways. We are so devastated to hear this news," she said. The Toronto District School Board offered its condolences in an Aug. 15 post on Twitter. "Tammy is being remembered as a very passionate, charismatic and diligent teacher by her colleagues at Glen Ames, where she taught in the French Immersion Program," the note read. "Not only was she respected and well-liked by students, parents and col-
leagues, she was always willing to go the extra mile to help students. The TDSB, together with the Glen Ames Senior Public School community, is deeply saddened by her passing and our thoughts are with her family, friends and those that knew her." Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo also offered her condolences in a tweet as Chen had also taught at Swansea Junior Public School, which is in her riding. "Tammy Chen teacher @SwanseaPS was a victim of the #BurkinaFasoAttack . Love light and prayer to her family," she wrote. Aside from teaching and studying, Chen was also the co-founder and president of Bright Futures of Burkina Faso, a registered non-profit offering interest-free microcredit loans to women in Burkina Faso. -with files from Torstar News

• OUR VIEW •
ABOUT US
Charlottesville proves we must unite against hate After the events in Charlottesville and their aftermath this month, we in Canada might be tempted to allow just a little bit of smugness amid the horror we feel at the images of swastikas and torches on parade - at the evil brutality of Heather Heyer’s murder there. We should strive to avoid that. Their president aside, many Americans, most perhaps, have responded to the resurgence of neo-Nazism and white supremacy with powerful and principled rejection. America may remain bitterly divided, with a cut still very much in need of healing sustained during that country’s Civil War. But its loudest voices - again, excepting President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed - are most hateful when they speak of hate itself. Canada isn’t in nearly that sort of trouble, or so it seems. We are open to immigration, welcoming of refugees, inclusive and kind-hearted. If there is evidence to the contrary, surely it is a trifling bit, or if larger and more systemic, then it is something that we have common capacity to correct. Thinking that is a mistake, particularly if one is doing so from the point of view of the dominant, which is to say white, culture. Setting our own prime minister’s "sunny ways" narrative aside, Canada has a history of hateful rhetoric and fascist movements, and Toronto has too often been at the centre of it. The 1930s’ Christie Pits riot in which real Nazi supporters clashed with Jewish and Italian groups is a good touchstone, but there have been more: the recentlypassed Holocaust-denier Ernst Zündel was a Torontonian for many years, peddling his hate from a house in Cabbagetown. The Heritage Front neo-Nazi organization had a presence in Toronto before it disbanded in 2005. More recently, Torontonians in the east end have found their mailboxes filled with the hate-filled screeds from Your Ward News, a publication that Canada Post will no longer deliver for that reason. And of course it is Toronto where now-former Rebel Media correspondent Faith Goldy is based. The far-right website let her go just last week after she appeared on a neo-Nazi podcast, following her attendance at the Charlottesville rally. It would be wrong to say that Torontonians have tolerated this sort of thing all these years; we haven’t. But we have taken false comfort, in the belief that the seeds of racism and out-and-out Nazism that have been blowing through the gutters will never truly take root.

Kevin Clarke, leader of "The People" Kevin Clarke shows me how he barricaded his apartment door, two days earlier, against the sheriff, his social worker, and police. They tried evicting him. He live-streamed it all. "If you put ’nightmare’ and ’hell’ and ’disgrace,’ that’s what it comes up to," he says of his situation. Follow politics closely in Toronto? You’ve probably seen Clarke. Five times, he’s run for mayor; nine times for MPP, four for MP, twice for councillor. He leads "The People," a registered political party. In public, he’s always campaigning. His campaigning voice is loud. I’ve seen him escorted offstage at debates when he wasn’t invited. He’s waved a flag or held a cross when
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto he was. He’s drawn slogans in chalk on sidewalks at Yonge and Sheppard, on curbs at Yonge and Dundas. Clarke ran a car business. Then he became homeless, which, he says, can happen to anybody. "Twenty years ago, I was an extensive drug user, sleeping on concrete." Clarke panhandled in

the Annex. I saw him disrupt a demonstration supporting the homeless in St. Jamestown; he wore roller skates and a bed sheet. At 53, he’s on disability payments, has back problems, liver problems, a busted foot. A program for adults living with serious mental illness pays his rent. But his landlord in Scarborough’s Kingston-Galloway area wants him out. Running to replace the late Rob Ford as an Etobicoke councillor last August, Clarke kept hanging makeshift signs outside his building and from his balcony. The landlord, and Clarke’s own social worker, testified this was related to mental illness. Clarke says he’s exercis-
ing his right to campaign. He maintains the landlord, forced by his complaints to clean up his building’s playground and make various repairs, wants him out for that. "I told them the only way they can win is if I wind up dead or in hospital." Last Friday, he went to Divisional Court to get more time for an appeal. If evicted, he’ll be homeless again. Clarke can annoy. He videotapes his arguments. But I understand now: as long as Clarke runs for office, Toronto’s homeless, its truly marginalized, its ill, cannot completely be ignored. live shows performed by the Storefront Theatre on the history of theatre and entertainment in the area. Participants will also be able to enjoy historical photos, memorabilia, and articles in the venues, a press release said. Furthermore, The Comedy Bar will play host to several acts meant to keep
festivalgoers in a delightful mood. Hurly Burly is an Ontario 150 Community Celebration led by Working Women Community Centre and several other organizations including the Bloorcourt Business Improvement Area. For more information, visit www.bloorcourt.com.

It will be held at St. Clair Gardens Parkette, located at 3 Prescott Ave., near St. Clair Avenue West. At 2 p.m., the parkette will be renamed to Don Panos Parkette, after the late St. Clair Gardens BIA head who died last year. Panos was 72 when he

Artist Rey Saem, a recent immigrant to Bloor West Village from Iceland, will have his first show debut at Gallery 1313 in September. This architect turned painter’s first show is titled Five, a reference to the age at which he decided to move to the moon in order to escape the people he had begun to see in his home who were "gone" (no longer in the land of the living). He built himself a wooden car for the journey, which he has now recreated as part of his show which opens Sept. 13. His large canvases show his fascination with the moon and stars in whimsi-

looking to run quick errands while paying one fare, said salon owner Elena Simonetta. "Why all of a sudden just take it away?" said Simonetta, who estimates half of her clientele at Salon 1065, located on St. Clair near Oakwood Avenue, relies on the TTC. "It’s short-sighted to get rid of the time-based transfers." Simonetta, is also chair of the Regal Heights BIA which covers St. Clair from Winona Drive to Westmount Avenue. Tony Cappellano, owner of Boom Breakfast and Company, a popular location for brunch, wasn’t too concerned about ending the transfers. He said the presence of the dedicated streetcar line on St. Clair has been terrible for local businesses because of years of construction. He doesn’t believe the transfers have had any kind of effect on his business. "My experience with (the TTC) is they did nothing for us," said Cappelano. Simonetta said she found out about the

transfers via an email sent by the TTC advising of the deployment of the new streetcars. As part of the message, which was provided to Metroland Media Toronto, it’s also mentioned the time-based transfers will stop being issued as of Sept. 2. "As you know, this program was originally introduced as a goodwill gesture and businesses along St. Clair to thank them for their patience during (dedicated streetcar line) construction," the message from TTC senior community liaison Denise Jayawardene reads. "Due to the design of the new streetcars there is no way for the operator to issue any paper transfers to customers." Bolla hopes there still might be time to keep the program running for at least another year so customers on St. Clair can get used to the changes.
