LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A city garbage receptacle on the north side of Dupont Street at Edwin Avenue has been inexplicably burnt as many as seven times recently, reports an area resident who lives nearby. Junction Triangle resident Marcel Fortin said the bin, situated in front of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Andrew, is burned so severely that only its metal frame remains somewhat intact. It seems to be happening after midnight, he added. Each time, Fortin, who comes across the remnants on his way to work or walking by with his dog, said he has contacted the city’s 311 customer service line and the bin is quickly replaced. “It is always burned to the ground,” Fortin told The Villager. “It’s unbelievably charred.” Fortin speculates that lighter fluid is used to set the bin ablaze. lights out for earth hour

Caregivers can get support, resources at Metroland show The Caregiver Show comes to the Direct Energy Centre May 14 PETER HAGGERT phaggert@insidetoronto.com We’d like to extend an invitation to family caregivers. Metroland Media Toronto is proud to be the founding producer of The Caregiver Show, to be held May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. As many as eight million Canadians are family caregivers. It’s not uncommon for people to care for family members or friends in short- or long-term need. In fact, it is so common we don’t tend to identify ourselves as caregivers. But caregiving is a challenge. Caregiving is a commitment. It’s often fraught with worry, built on unflinching dedication and often carried out with little respite. It’s important for caregivers to know there are resources available to them to help in challenging times. The Caregiver Show has three main goals: to provide caregivers with information, to provide the opportunity for caregivers to network with other family members in the same situation, and as well, a chance for caregivers to get a little pampering. It’s absolutely free, and we suggest you register early

CANDLE POWER: (Above) Lisette Mallet, left, Andre Mallet-Wallace and David Wallace light their candles at the start of the Earth Hour walk along Roncevalles Avenue on Saturday night. (Right) Arif Virani, right, and Sandier Drake help to conserve some energy during the event. This was the fifth annual Earth Hour candlelight walk, organized by the Roncesvalles Business Improvement Area and WWF Canada Earth Hour team captain Karyn Klaire Koski. The city marked its eighth year participating in the global event where people are encouraged to go dark from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 29. This year, Toronto Hydro noted a six per cent decrease in power usage. Last year, the decrease was seven per cent.

to attend. Speakers at the show will include: n Teepa Snow is a highly sought speaker and an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. She has an independent practice in North Carolina; n Dr. Amy D’Aprix is co-founder of Essential Conversations Project, Inc., an organization dedicated to assisting families in having the key planning/decision-making discussions while honouring the emotional components inherent in these conversations; n Shirlee Sharkey is president and chief executive officer of Saint Elizabeth Health Care, a leading national health-care organization known for its social innovation, strong financial performance and pioneering practices. We encourage you to visit our show website at www.caregivershow. ca for more information and to register for this very special day. If you know someone in the community who is a family member caring for a loved one, why not suggest this show? Presenting sponsor is Saint Elizabeth Health Care. Sponsors include downsizingdiva.com, Alzheimer Society and Community Care Action Centre among others. Peter Haggert is the editor-in-chief of Metroland Media Toronto. Host a dinner and raise money for St. Joe’s hospital St. Joseph’s Health Centre is cooking up something extra special. Inspired by a hospital foundation board member, the centre has launched a new initiative, the ‘St. Joe’s Supper Club.’ “It’s an interesting story,” foundation president Maria Dyck told The Villager. “One of our board mem-

bers was hosting a dinner party for friends and family around Christmas time. Instead of accepting wine or other small gifts, he asked his guests to consider making a donation to St. Joe’s instead.” That small request generated a couple thousand dollars for the west-end Toronto teaching hos-

pital. “It got us thinking about what people do in their daily lives and led us to the idea of a supper club,” Dyck said. “It’s a simple concept.” It’s about sharing a meal with friends and family while supporting medical care close to home. Treat loved ones to a meal in your home

and ask guests to make a donation instead of bringing a host or hostess gift. The hospital will provide donation cards so they can receive a charitable tax receipt. “Make it part of your invitation,” Dyck said. “It’s a really nice way to do a little something more for your community.”

Contact the hospital to let it know you’re planning a Supper Club event. Then, it’s up to you to plan the meal. – Lisa Rainford For more information, contact Sherry Lamb at St. Joe’s at lambsh@stjoe. on.ca or 416-530-6486 ext 3232. Visit www.stjoe.on.ca

Celebrating our spring initiatives I

Write us

t may actually be that spring has sprung.

Excuse us for taking this rare opportunity to use this space to talk about a few spring initiatives we at The Bloor West Villager have underway. First and foremost, we’d like you to take a look at our caregivershow.ca website, promoting our upcoming very special day at the Direct Energy Centre. You’ll be hearing a lot in coming weeks about this show, aimed at being a resource and a respite for family caregivers. We don’t all consider ourselves family caregivers, but in truth, one in four cares for a family member or friend who has some form of short or long-term incapacity. At The Caregiver Show, on May 14, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. there will be sessions on caring for family members, an opportunity to learn about resources available to help caregivers, and an our view opportunity to meet people in the same circumstance for friendship and empathy. And yes, we want to Caregiver offer a little pampering for careshow supports givers as well. It’s a free day. For more inforthe family mation and to register, please go to the caregivershow.ca website. On a different spring note, you may have noticed information on UsedToronto.com, our latest platform for family-friendly classifieds. It’s time to clean out those closets, basements and garages and make a little money. What’s old to you can be new to someone else this spring. A third initiative is our new portal celebrating Toronto’s interest in the upcoming World Cup. Go to thevillager.ca and in the rotating carousel of eight stories, you’ll see one takes you to our World Cup pages. Have a favorite soccer team? Are you a blogger? We’d love to hear from you. So apologies once again to expand in this space on how we’re dealing with spring. But we thought it was useful information. The Caregiver Show is a tremendous and rare opportunity for family caregivers. We hope you’ll pass it along to someone in need. UsedToronto is a practical solution to spring cleanup. And then, perhaps the joy of summer activities in some neighbourhoods will be the celebration of this year’s World Cup. Teams from 32 countries will battle it out for world soccer supremacy at this year’s tourney in Brazil and we have passionate Toronto residents following each team.

Safety at city hall: the three-sided story

A

s I write this the morning of April 1, reporters and cameras are camped outside the mayor’s office, waiting for our chief magistrate to show up for council. It is antsy business, for more reasons than April Fool’s Day worries: encounters with the mayor at city hall are chancy operations. Mayor Rob Ford makes it difficult. Sometimes, he breaks into a run. A couple of weeks ago, when reporters and cameras were following him in from a hot dog run in Nathan Phillips Square, the mayor called a charge through reporters lining a public staircase, knocking down a photographer. He was closely accompanied by city hall security, as he often is – with security imposing themselves between photographers and the mayor, and at one point, asking reporters to stop shouting questions. The same guard was

david nickle the city bowled over himself in the crush. The situation was hardly a safe one for anyone in city hall at the time. Reporters and camera people were in immediate harm’s way, but so too were members of the public, attempting to access city hall. The mayor might also have harmed himself, although he seemed to feel he had the matter under control. Now, no one was seriously hurt – or at least says that they were. But the goings-on at city hall between the mayor, the press and security are an ongoing worry. Late last year, when the mayor was losing his power, security in council chambers stood by while the mayor bumped into city councillor Pam McConnell as he ran

across the floor of council, and allowed the mayor’s driver Jerry Agyemang to photograph members of the public in an intimidating way while the Ford brothers goaded them on. It is interesting to note that last week, while I was attempting to photograph Porter Airlines owner Robert Deluce making a deputation in council chambers from the same angle, security put a stop to it. It is clear that there are different sets of rules for the public and the press – even councillors – and members of the mayor’s personal staff. As a matter of disclosure – when I’m not writing this column, I’m serving as president of the City Hall Press Gallery, and trying to deal with these matters. I do so with some sympathy for at least two of the three sides. As journalists, we have to be able to ask difficult questions and confront city politicians with

uncomfortable truths. That’s not negotiable. And yet the situation that city hall security find themselves in these days is unprecedented: looking after the safety of everyone in a city hall, with a chief magistrate that demands they double as a personal guard and has been known to behave erratically. It is an awful situation. But at least until the election and quite possibly beyond, it’s a situation that will persist. As I finish writing this column, Mayor Ford has arrived at city hall. When reporters asked him where he might have been, he responded by pushing through the throng and grabbing the lens of a camera held by a CTV cameraman, pushing it away and disappearing into his office. It’s hardly an incident to inspire feelings of security.

BUNNIES AT THE LIBRARY

Police say there’s no pattern to the fires >>>from page 1 graphs of the bin’s demise. Over the past year, a dozen of these kinds of fires have been set, according to Toronto police’s Community Response Unit manager Staff Sgt. Phil Van Andel. “There’s really no pattern in terms of times or days, Van Andel said. “We’re mindful of it. We’ve got an officer assigned to it. Police have talked to the local community about it as well, he added. If you have any information about the fires, call the division at 416-808-1108.

Police release security image of man wanted for two bank robberies ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police have released security camera images in the hopes of identifying a suspect in two bank holdups in Bloor West Village. Police said a man walked into a bank near Bloor Street and Windermere Avenue, approached a teller and displayed a knife around 3:10 p.m. March 12. The man then made a threat to the teller and demanded money. He left with cash. About 35 minutes later, the man walked into another bank in the area, walked up to a teller and made a demand for money. When the teller hesitated, the man produced a box cutter and made a threat. He fled towards Runnymede subway station. The suspect is white, 35 to 40 years old and unshaven. He wore a black winter coat,

sunglasses, a blue and grey toque and a red and black scarf. Anyone with information is asked to call the holdup squad at 416-8087350 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222TIPS.

Lilies are harmful to your cat As we say hello to spring, many of us choose to brighten up our homes with a fresh bouquet of flowers. Some flowers are relatively harmless while others can cause stomach upset. There are some flowers which can be very toxic to your pet – even fatal. One of the most common and popular of which is the Lily. All lily flowers and all plant parts should be considered toxic, and even just a nibble can be fatal. Vomiting, lethargy and decreased appetite are the most common initial

signs. They are followed by increased drinking and urination. This can progress to complete kidney failure, which is characterized by the lack of production of urine. The severe degree of kidney failure can only be followed by death. What can be done you ask? If there is any suspicion that your cat has consumed a lily, we recommend visiting your veterinarian ASAP. They will likely run a blood and urine test to access the current state of the kidneys and start

After a couple of days of fluid therapy your vet will likely recheck your cat’s blood work to access kidney health. Some cats are able to recover with full kidney function, while others are left with some with some degree of kidney failure that they will carry with them through life. Some cats are not so lucky and despite the best of care

end up in end stage kidney failure ultimately resulting in death. Our advice to cat owners: no lilies in the home.....not even out of reach, as most cats are quite agile and able to access pretty much any region or surface of your home. There are plenty of beautiful flowers out there, which can decorate your home without harm to your cat. Don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian if you have questions about the safety of a particular plant or flower in your home – it just might save your pet’s life!

Junction historical society to remain at Annette branch Toronto library grants group monthly rent rebate LIsa rainford lrainford@insidetoronto.com Toronto Public Library has granted the West Toronto Junction Historical Society (WTJHS) an $800 monthly rebate off its rent. “The figure will go up every year and we have only been granted a rebate for the time of our three-year contract, but can renegotiate again at the end of that time,” WTJHS president Neil Ross said. “It is better than it looked at first.” The society moved its archives back into its space on the lower floor of Annette library Friday, following the branch’s recent five-month renovation project. The historical society was at risk of potentially folding because it was facing a $1,900 monthly rent, according to Ross. The WTJHS’ last contract was signed in 1999, he told The Villager. At that

its archives in storage, Ross outlined the WTJHS’ plight while asking for some kind of reprieve for the escalating costs. Such a monthly expense “will break a local society,” Ross wrote in his letter.

He asked that the WTJHS’ “extraordinary costs” of moving and storage be taken into account when calculating the amount of its monthly lease agreement. Union Pearson Express Electrification Environmental Assessment NOTICE OF COMPLETION Environmental Project Report THE PROJECT Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Union Pearson (UP) Express Electrification project. Metrolinx is proposing to electrify the UP Express service beginning at the future UP Express Union Station in the City of Toronto and terminating at the future UP Express Pearson Station (at Terminal 1, Toronto Pearson International Airport) in the City of Mississauga. The project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometres of track along the Union Station GO Rail Corridor and Kitchener GO Rail Corridor to Highway 427, where the route then follows the new UP Express spur line (under construction) into Pearson Airport (see key map below). The purpose of the project is to convert the UP Express service from diesel to electric power, which will be achieved through a Traction Electrification System that will provide electrical power to the trains by means of a power distribution system. An Overhead Contact System (wiring system) will be suspended from a number of support structures (i.e. portals, cantilevers) placed along and over the track. Two paralleling stations and a new maintenance facility are also required. In addition, a separate Environmental Assessment study is being carried out by Hydro One for the proposed Traction Power Substation, in accordance with the Class EA for Minor Transmission Facilities. Electrification of the UP Express is part of The Big Move, Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, which will dramatically improve how people move in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Funding for electrification is dependent on the Metrolinx Investment Strategy. THE PROCESS The environmental impact of this transit project was assessed and an Environmental Project Report prepared in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. Rollergirls founder honoured with Caring Canadian award Cynthia Brooks credited for reviving sport of roller derby LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s likely Dundas Street West and Runnymede Road-area resident Cynthia Brooks – perhaps best known as her roller derby alter ego “Splat Benatar” is the first-ever player of the sport to be awarded a Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. Brooks was recognized by Lt.-Gov. David Onley, on behalf of Gov.-Gen. David Johnston, with a certificate and pin during a special ceremony at Queen’s Park along with several people “who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad.” Brooks is credited for reviving the sport of roller derby by creating the GTA Rollergirls, a not-for-profit, all-inclusive league comprised of women of all ages, fitness levels and careers. “It was quite a shock,” revealed Brooks at the league’s practice at Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School on March 26. “The players applied for me.” Brooks said she was inspired by the 2006 A&E reality TV show Rollergirls, featuring the Lonestar Rollergirls, of the Austin Texas roller derby league. “I came off the couch and decided I wanted to do this,” Brooks told The Villager, adding she used to roller skate as a kid. Founded in 2007, the flat track league – comprised of allstar team the G-sTARs and the rookies, the Derby Debutants – plays its first game of the season Saturday, April 19 at the Bubble next to Ted Reeve arena, at the corner of Main and Gerard streets. Tickets to the pre-season community day game are free, but spectators are encouraged to make a cash ($5 suggested minimum) donation to the Lions Club at

The GTA Rollergirls play a pre-season game Saturday, April 19 at Ted Reeve Arena. Here, "Nurse Joy" of the GTA Rollergirls' Derby Debutantes team breaks through Orangeville's Pulp Affliction players to score some points during a recent game. The group’s founder, Cynthia Brooks, was recently awarded a Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award.

It’s an amazing workout. I love the people I skate with – it’s such a welcoming sport. Everyone’s so nice and supportive. – Cathy Kaddie , a.k.a., ‘Cat the Conquerer’

the door. “It’s an amazing workout,” said Cathy Kaddie, a.k.a ‘Cat the Conqueror’ as she sat on the sidelines of the track to chat. “I love the people I skate with – it’s such a welcoming sport. Everyone’s so nice and supportive.” When the Scarborough resident first started, she couldn’t skate at all. Everyone goes through a 10-week training program in preparation for the full-contact games. Players are taught how to stop, how to stride, how to hit and take a hit. “I went to a game and my husband said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’” recalled Kaddie. It’s a time commitment. The teams practice three times a week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. They play throughout Ontario and the U.S. Two teams of five members roller skate in the same direction around the track. The game consists of a series of two-minute match ups called “jams” in which both teams designate a scoring player, the

“jammer” who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. Meanwhile, each team helps its jammer while blocking the opposing jammer – which means they’re playing both offense and defense at the same time. Janine Yager, or Brickhouse Bardot, has been playing for five seasons. The Etobicoke resident said she wanted to join a lesbian soccer league, but when she discovered it was full, decided to try roller derby. Her moniker was inspired by a neighbour. When she was 10, he told her she was built like a brick house. The name is “tough and sexy.” May Biley, a.k.a Maykilla the Hun, an Annex resident, has been a part of the league since its inception. She says she loves the sport for its camaraderie and sense of community. Every practice is a challenge. “It doesn’t matter how slow you go – you’re always one lap ahead of that person on the couch,” Biley said. Since the beginning, the GTA Rollergirls has supported several charitable organizations like the Parkdale Food Bank, Community Centre 55, the Heart & Stroke Foundation and even helped finance a private adoption. Take part in the April 19 community day. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the game starting at 7 p.m. Ted Reeve arena is situated at 175 Main St.

TTC uses April Fool’s Day to highlight funding concerns A bold new funding strategy announced by the TTC on Tuesday, April 1, will see stations with less ridership shuttered and sold to developers to construct high-density subway platform condos. TTC chief customer Chris Upfold and communications chief Brad Ross explained the plan to TTC users in a short web video. Chester and Bessarion stations were among those on the chopping block, and the plan which would save the TTC “hundreds of dollars” in operating expenses. If it all sounds like a joke, that’s because the “plan” was part of an April Fool’s Day gag intended to highlight something the TTC believes is no laughing matter: the lack of stable, long term funding for the transit commission. Service changes announced by TTC The TTC also announced
