Yogurt producer steps up in support of The Stop
off the leash
LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Gerry Doutre, president and CEO of Ultima Foods, admitted he knew little about community kitchens as he was named celebrity chef Lynn Crawford’s second-in-command during a special cooking event at The Stop. Last Wednesday, just eight months after debuting its yogurt, ‘iögo,’ Doutre was excited to help launch Ultima’s “iögo, supporting goodness” program in support of community kitchens across Canada. “Congratulations to you folks for this,” Doutre said, his sleeves rolled up in The Stop’s kitchen. “I know this much about community kitchens. I think it’s really cool.”

Couple’s first film uses neighbourhood as backdrop Dufferin Grove area to be featured in Brand New You LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Shawn Whitney and his wife Kathryn Palmateer are parents to two daughers, one four years old and the other three months, but they are eagerly anticipating the debut of their latest co-production, a feature-length film. Palmateer, a photographer and Whitney a development consultant and writer, wanted to pool their resources and blend their talents to create a movie – but with a catch: It had to be made with little to no money. “We both felt like all we were working on were projects for other people. We wanted to do something
ourselves,” said Palmateer, sitting in the kitchen of the couple’s Bloor Street West and Dufferin Street-area home on a Friday morning. “We thought, ‘Let’s just do it.’” Whitney says he was inspired by reading about advanced technological singularity and inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, who wrote The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology, a 2005 non-fiction book about artificial intelligence and the future of humanity. “Then, he got this crazy idea,” said Palmateer with a laugh. Brand New You, a science fiction story, centres around Santiago Morales, a 30-year-old widower. After the sudden death of his wife, Viviana, Morales decides he’s going

to kill himself. Moving into a rooming house, Morales begins to work his way through his suicide to-do list. “Then, he fails at killing himself,” said Whitney. Instead of dying, Morales decides to seek the help of his landlord, a disgraced biologist, to clone his dead wife so they can be reunited. unconventional story line Despite the unconventional story line, Whitney says the film is ultimately about relationships – and moving on. “It’s actually pretty funny,” interjects Palmateer. eaching a tentative agreement with Ontario high school teachers has sparked calls for the Kathleen Wynne Liberals to reveal exactly what the two parties agreed to on March 29. For the moment, thanks to a media blackout, that information doesn’t look likely to come until after members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) vote on those changes Thursday. To say this dispute should never have gone this far is an understatement; however, it has and Ontarians deserve to know exactly what was discussed, and what we ‘may’ be on the hook for. Changes to contract conditions the Liberal government imposed on teachers early this year seem to have our view made a difference, with the labour dispute possibly coming Province must to an end this week. Issues suraddress issue of rounding sick leave, maternity unpaid days and local low enrolment leave, bargaining, appear to have been resolved with OSSTF. However, this does little for a provincial school system that needs serious rethinking – especially in the City of Toronto. In what seemed to be a whisper in the wind, teachers with the Toronto District School Board face layoffs come 2013-2014 as the city’s public schools face another budgetary shortfall. On the chopping block are nearly 250 secondary school teachers, cuts to guidance teachers, clerical staff, and even schoolbased safety monitors. These cuts will only slice in half an estimated budget deficit of $50 million. This should raise concerns, and some serious discussions as to where the education system in Toronto, and the province is heading. The problems facing the TDSB – low enrolment being the biggest issue – demand attention. That infrastructure and capital repairs are in dire need of attention also demand some focus. Cutting a deal with teachers before these issues are at least discussed is, in some ways, shortsighted. Perhaps it’s time to bring back the controversial Accommodation Review Committees, that began in fall 2009 to address declining enrolment, better utilize school facilities, and create a better learning environment, but with a provincial mandate. That way, we can get education back on track.

Toronto lacks maturity to do what’s needed for transit
W
hen Toronto council shut down Mayor Rob Ford’s move to kill surface light rail transit and replace it with a single subway along Sheppard Avenue, it may have seemed to some that this was a modal war: that council simply didn’t want to build subways, preferred light rail transit and didn’t love the former municipality of Scarborough as much as Ford did. What it really was about, though, was money. The Scarborough subway plan Ford put forward came with a promise of unrealistic levels of private sector financing and without a sense of how the city would actually pay to operate the new line. It was really in answer to this, that in the months following the defeat of the mayor’s plan, councillors tried to discuss financing options.
david nickle the city It didn’t get very far. It’s the way things go at city hall these days. It’s a lucky thing, in retrospect, that former premier Dalton McGuinty thought to take responsibility for transit planning and financing away from Toronto politicians, and hand it off to Metrolinx. On Tuesday, Metrolinx released the initial foray into what will be a major, and necessary, public debate into how it might fund transit expansion in the Greater Toronto Area, in the form of a not-very short list of taxes, fees and other revenue tools. They are all politically risky, the sorts of things that municipal councils are loathe to approve. They are also, necessarily, regional
in scope, recognizing the fundamental truth that the subway along Yonge Street in Toronto serves people who live outside Toronto as much as it does Torontonians. If subsidy comes from anyone, it should come from everyone. It takes a government that is both large and mature to extract that subsidy. Could Toronto do it? Well, we’re certainly big. But as to maturity? Ford provided an eloquent demonstration Tuesday, when asked what he thought of the short list of revenue tools. He made a retching sound. Then he started talking about casinos again. Hopefully Metrolinx and the minority Liberal government will prove themselves better up to the job.

Casino belongs at Woodbine
To the editor: I would prefer to see a casino built at Woodbine Racetrack. They have made no secrets about their desire for an expanded facility. They had been planning for it as far back as five years or more. The Ontario Jockey Club has a long history in Ontario and they are made up of Ontario racers and race fans. Far more of the royalties and fees paid to them will stay in Ontario and help our economy. Downtown Toronto does not have the open spaces needed for this venue. Many people and much too much money has gone into the fabric of the downtown to be dug up and cast off as worthless. Glenn Kitchen

The Stop’s community kitchen is ‘heart of what we do’ >>>from page 1 that’s not a bike ride?’ We’re in food, that’s our business, so here we are.” Ultima Foods has committed to financially contributing to The Stop as well as two other community kitchens close to its facilities in Quebec and it will donate iögo products to the three community kitchens. Ultima has also implemented a corporate volunteer program for its employees, who will take a day off work per year to participate in community kitchen activities in their neighbourhoods. Joining Doutre at the launch, which involved preparing and cooking a threecourse meal of spice-rubbed chicken, pesto pasta salad and pear spice cake, was Nick Saul, president and CEO of Community Food Centres Canada and former executive director of The Stop for 14 years. “In this country, three million people are food insecure, What this means is, they’re
unsure of where their next meal will come from. They’re missing meals so their children can eat,” said Saul. “Our inelegant response to this vulnerability has been the food bank.” When Saul first arrived at The Stop, “you had to check your humanity at the door.” The building was falling apart and the food was not aesthetically pleasing nor very edible. “ We knew we had to change things,” he recalled. “It was extraordinarily difficult for people to walk through the door. They wanted a more respectful, dignified place. We decided to create programs for people to be gardeners, to be cooks.” The Stop, said Saul, is a place where people can try a recipe, can come together with others in their community for a meal. “No one wants a hand-out. They want to be involved and engaged. You can participate at your own pace,” he said.

There are 2,000 community kitchens across Canada, pointed out Crawford, who as star of the popular show Pitchin’ In meets and cooks with farmers, growers, fishermen and ranchers, who “work so hard to give us this,” she said gesturing to the vegetables in the middle of the prep table. “I can’t wait to work with my sous-chef, Gerry,” Crawford said. “This is a really good thing. 4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.
What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting is ranked as a top 20 roofing company in North America, when providing long term customer warranties. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 11 times (including 2012). In 2010 Walker Contracting installed the most CertainTeed SureStart™ long term warranty roofs in Canada, for the second year in a row.

The Bloor West Villager congratulates Bloor West Village BIA Chair Alex Ling for being a recipient of a commemorative medal to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. Each Member of Parliament was given 30 medals to present to constituents who have made significant contributions to their communities. MP Peggy Nash (Parkdale-High Park) presented her riding’s medals in a public ceremony for the medal recipients and their guests on January 20 at Swansea Town Hall. Recipients were selected by a volunteer advisory committee struck by Ms Nash, and the committee received a large number of nominations. They come from many walks of life: the arts, business, elected office, the media, sports, volunteer and service organizations, and neighbourhood renewal organizations. Mr. Alex Ling is the founder of the first Business Improvement Area in the world (Bloor West Village BIA), is the longest serving BIA board member in the world (over 40 years, 24 as chair), and is also the founder of the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA). TO BUY MORE BIG BUSES ◗TTC The TTC’s board of commissioners approved the p u rc h a s e o f 1 2 6 m o re articulated buses to run on high ridership routes, at its meeting last week. The 60-foot vehicles, which are also known as artics, have separate sections divided by a pivoting middle hinge and can hold up to 112 riders total. The high-passenger capacity makes them ideal for rush hour service, says the TTC. SHARE PROGRAM RATES SET TO RISE ◗BIKE
The popular bike share program Bixi is raising membership rates for 2013. Beginning this week, it will cost $97 plus tax to purchase a one-year membership, $41 for a monthly pass, to access Bixi’s 80 stations and 1,000 bicycles available year-round through the program. That’s an increase of two per cent. This is the first time costs have risen since its debut in Toronto two years ago. Bixi says the price hike is due to inflation and increased operating costs.

CONSTRUCTION ROAD CLOSURES ◗GO
West-end road closures are planned for two weekends in April due to GO Transit construction work. Beginning this Friday at 8 p.m. and lasting until 5 a.m. Monday, April 8, Martin Grove Road will be closed to traffic between Bethridge Road and Vulcan Street. Then on Friday, April 19, Kipling Avenue will remain closed all weekend before reopening 5 a.m. on Monday, April 22, morning. The closures are because of girder installation for rail bridges going up in the area as part of Metrolinx’s GO Georgetown South expansion project. POWER LINE WORK THIS MONTH ◗STREETCAR

Unresolved questions surround a controversial lease extension between a newsstand operator and the TTC, says a board member for the transit agency. Don Valley West Councillor John Parker still has questions about the 15-year, $40.7-million contract extension between the TTC and Tobmar Investments, which operates the Gateway Newsstands. The lease, which also covers other Tobmar holdings such as bakeries and kiosks, was initially approved by the board, but the decision was reversed after a third-party review ordered by TTC chair Karen Stintz in January indicated interest from another bidder. At last week’s TTC board meeting, Michael Aychenthal, CEO of Tobmar Investments, which operates Gateway, said he had informal conversations with the TTC regarding the
consolidation of its various leases with the transit agency, including 65 newsstands in the subway system prior to a formal meeting July 25, 2012. Bl r West Buddies Ask The Experts hosted Easter this year in my home Q Iand decorated with fresh flowers
to help celebrate this and the upcoming spring season. Any concerns I should be aware of for the safety of my cat Oscar? Thanks! Flora Bloom
A
Dear Flora, Some flowers are relatively harmless while others can cause stomach upset. There are some flowers which can be very toxic to your pet – even fatal. One of the most common and popular at this time of year is the Easter Lily. All lily flowers and all plant parts should be considered toxic, and even just a nibble can be fatal. Vomiting, lethargy and decreased appetite are the most common initial signs. They are followed by increased drinking and urination. This can progress to complete kidney failure, which is characterized by the lack of production of urine. Our kidneys are essential to life and we cannot live without them, thus this severe degree
Prevent pests
of kidney failure can only be followed by death. Our advice to cat owners: no lilies in the home.....not even out of reach, as most cats are quite agile and able to access pretty much any region or surface of your home. Don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian if you have questions about the safety of a particular plant or flower in your home

it safe to leave my dog alone in the Q Isroom with my young child?
A
A good question, on the one hand having pets growing up can provide great benefits to children. On the other hand, you want your children to be safe. If you have had your dog for awhile and you trust him/her, then you should be alright. I would start with supervised meetings between your dog and children, and proceed based on how these go. If you are unsure in the slightest at any time of your dog, I would not leave them alone unsupervised. The

other issue is teaching your children how to properly approach your dog so as not to elicit a negative response. Obviously you cannot do that too effectively until they are older, but it is important to teach them, as many dog bites are due to family pets reacting to painful or fearful stimuli from family members or friends. It is not that these dogs are aggressive, but that they have limited options to show their fear or

discomfort when cornered. The important thing to remember is that we cannot reason with dogs and young children as we do with adults, so we need to set them up to succeed. We can do this by properly knowing our dogs and how they are likely to react, by supervising the interactions between our dogs and children, and by teaching our children how to treat dogs with respect.

Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes thrive during warm weather, and can pose threats to humans as well as our four-legged family members. For pets, fleas cause more than just constant scratching; they can transfer tapeworms and cause serious skin conditions. Managing pests is all about taking proactive steps to limit their risks and presence. • Check your pets frequently for signs of pests and keep an eye out for excessive scratching, licking and grooming behaviours. • Regularly bathe pets during the summer, especially following extended periods outdoors or following playtime with other animals. • Never let a pet sleep in your bed, and regularly wash your pet’s bed and toys. • To help control tick populations, keep vegetation in the yard trimmed, especially along the edges of the property. • Work with your pest management professional to treat your yard for ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. • Speak to your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention treatments, as well as heartworm prevention medication. – newscanada.com
