4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting is ranked as a top 20 roofing company in North America, when providing long term customer warranties. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 14 times (including 2015).

Teen heralded an ‘inspiration’ for life-saving actions Brendan Toronto Paramedic Services honour Alesia Bianchi for quick action after boy struck by SUV Shanahan helps kick off St. Joe’s fundraising campaign ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

When 16-year-old Alesia Bianchi saw a teen boy get hit by an SUV, she didn’t think twice about rendering aid. Alesia was in a minivan with her mom Nina when the teen witnessed the accident near Galleria Mall last September. “She says, ‘Mom, stop the car,’” Nina recalled. “I didn’t even pull over yet, and she already jumped out of the vehicle and ran to the individual.” Alesia mobilized bystanders to help as she worked to stabilize the injured youth, who was bleeding heavily. “He was thrown on top of the windshield of the SUV,” Alesia said. “I asked if anybody had a first aid kit and nobody had one, so I had to use the resources around me. I had one pedestrian give me his shirt as the primary bandage, and then in my mom’s van she had a bunch of tissues and paper towels and I used that as the secondary stuff.” While applying pressure to the wound, Alesia ordered bystanders

to call 911. “Nobody was really doing anything,” the Grade 11 student said. Nina said the boy had glass “embedded in his arms completely.” “(Alesia) was telling him to remain calm and not to move the glass,”

Nina said. “Honestly, she was very calm through the whole thing. It was second nature to her.” But when Alesia got back into her mom’s van to go home, she says, she began to panic and second-guess her actions. “What did I just do? Am I going

to get in trouble for this?” Alesia remembered thinking. Instead, the teen was nominated for a civilian citation. On Tuesday, Alesia was among 23 citizens recognized for heroic actions during a ceremony at Toronto Paramedic Services headquarters in North York. “She is an inspiration to teenagers to help others in their time of need and to put those at risk ahead of themselves,” the paramedic service said of Alesia. Nina said she’s “very proud” of her daughter, who wants to work in emergency services. “It kind of gave me an inside look (at the job),” Alesia said of her experience. - “It just reinforces my will to become a paramedic.” Alesia’s first ‘patient’ was taken to hospital in stable condition. Toronto Paramedic Services Supt. David Perschy said the awards ceremony is both a “recognition of individual efforts” as well as an opportunity to get a message out: “Don’t be afraid to get involved.”

Kevin Whalen pokes fun at politicians in Second City revue LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com One of the biggest lessons sketch comedian Kevin Whalen has learned in his 15-plus year career is that comedy is subjective. “The scene one reviewer will hate, another one loves,” Whalen told The Villager during a phone conversation not long after the debut of his ensemble show, The Hotline Always Blings Twice, The Second City Toronto’s 77th MainStage Revue. Open since March 22, Hotline has received positive reviews, Whalen said. “We make fun of (U.S. presidential candidate Donald) Trump and (Prime Minister Justin) Trudeau,” he said, adding that the show also delves into the Toronto taxis versus Uber controversy and pokes fun at

the TTC’s Presto card system and Netflix binge-watching. “It’s a mix of silly fun.” The Roncesvalles Village is one of six cast members who wrote and

performs in The Hotline Always Blings Twice, comprised of “hilarious” sketches and improvised scenes, which runs until Sunday, July 10. Whalen has been making people laugh since Grade 6 when his mother was called in for a meeting with his teacher. It was a meeting his mother never had to attend for his older brother and sister – something she made a point to tell him. Nervous the entire time she was away, Whalen said she returned only to tell him not to worry. “My teacher was mad because she said I was too social,” Whalen said. That same year, Whalen had written a story that everyone in the class liked and it was then that it dawned on him that he enjoyed entertaining others. “I thought I was going to be a

filmmaker,” he said. Instead, he followed in his sister Jennifer Whelan’s footsteps, a Second City alumnus. “I love making people laugh. I love that unfiltered, immediate reaction,” he said of sketch comedy. Whelan has lived in the Roncesvalles area with his wife, Paloma Nunez, who is head of improvisation at The Second City Training Centre. The couple has a two-year old son, Oscar. He can be seen as part of the improv comedy troupe S&P (a Friars Club Improv Finalist) at the Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. W., on the third Thursday of every month. Catch The Hotline Always Blings Twice at the Toronto Mainstage Theatre, 51 Mercer St. Tuesday through Sunday. For further details, visit www.secondcity.com

CIBC president and CEO Victor G. Dodig and Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan will co-chair a $70 million campaign in support of St. Joseph’s Health Centre. The $70 million campaign, called Promise, will modernize and build better spaces for patients, purchase new equipment and technology, and create specialized areas for care to meet the specific health needs of the community. “St. Joseph’s has served my family well over the years, and I want to ensure they will continue to provide the same level of care to the west-end community for years to come,” said Dodig in a statement, whose parents settled in west-end Toronto as newcomers more than 50 years ago. “I was born at St. Joseph’s, my brother was born there, and my father received care there. I am proud to be co-chairing the Promise Campaign because I’m passionate about St. Joe’s and its commitment to make our west-end community one of the healthiest in Canada.” St. Joe’s has played an integral part in Shanahan’s life as well. “St. Joseph’s has always been there for my family and the whole community with compassionate care above and beyond the ordinary,” he said in a statement. “Being part of the Promise Campaign is an opportunity to improve the lives of people I grew up with. I really wanted to help.” The $70 million Promise Campaign will transform care at St. Joseph’s over the next five years and ensure it continues to live the mission of its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph. Rob Ford’s seat must be filled through byelection

Write us

W

hen it comes to how the Toronto council seat belonging to the late Rob Ford will be filled, there should be no debate. Obviously, the city must call a byelection for Ward 2 Etobicoke North. Ford, the former mayor between 2010 and 2014 and before that Etobicoke North councillor from 2000 to 2010 and then again from 2014 until his death last month after a battle with cancer, would have wanted it that way. The man believed in the power of the people and the voice of the voter as being supreme. To do anything but call a byelection, would be a serious error on the part of council. our view Toronto The first step for councillors be to declare Ford’s Ward 2 Ford would will seat vacant, and that is expected happen at the May 3 meeting. have wanted to That’s a legal requirement it that way under the City of Toronto Act: that the seat be declared vacant within two council meetings of a councillor’s death, resignation or other reason why it can no longer be filled by the previously elected councillor. Since there’s already been a council meeting, late last week after Ford’s funeral which took place March 30, next month’s council meeting is when his seat must be declared vacant. At the May 3 meeting, councillors can consider one of two options as to what they can do to fill the seat – either they call a byelection or they appoint someone to be a ‘caretaker’ councillor for the ward until the next municipal election in 2018. The City of Toronto Act gives councillors a lot of leeway as they are actually only required to appoint if it is less than 90 days prior to the next municipal election. There is no maximum amount of time left in a term that requires a byelection over an appointment. The decision is at council’s discretion. Given that there are more than two years left on this term, it seems clear that councillors should decide to call a byelection. It’s the right thing to do. Once called, the byelection must be held within 60 days of the seat being declared vacant. We look forward to a date for the Ward 2 Etobicoke North council seat taking place in late June or very early July. That’s what’s best for democracy, the people of Etobicoke North and Toronto council as a whole. newsroom ph:

Will councillors go for a ranked ballot system? You don’t want to make judgements on character based on a single vote or action – we humans are more complex creatures than just one vote and we do things for all sorts of complicated reasons. But it’s hard to not draw some pretty firm conclusions about the character or at least motive of councillors who don’t support ranked ballot voting in Toronto. The system, not currently in use anywhere in Canada but applied in countries throughout the world, allows voters to rank their choices on a ballot. If their first choice candidate fails to get more than half the votes, their second choice is counted instead. This goes on until some candidate or another gets half of the total first, second, third and quite possibly 15th-place votes. The point is that only candidates who can appeal to half the voters in their jurisdiction get to be councillors. In the last term of coun-

david nickle the city cil, a majority of councillors voted to ask the provincial government to give Toronto the option to use ranked ballots rather than the firstpast-the-post system that’s currently in place. Then a couple of things happened. The first was the 2014 election. In total, 29 councillors were elected with more than 50 per cent of the vote, and 11 of those 29 were elected with less than 60 per cent of the vote. Mayor John Tory had just 40.3 per cent of the popular vote. The second was a latenight vote in 2015, when Ward 5 Councillor Justin Di Ciano, elected for the first time in 2014 with 54.1 per cent, put forward a motion to tell the province council didn’t mean what it said and was very happy with the first-past-the-post system. If the province puts

the ranked ballot system in place, his motion said, Toronto should be able to opt out or require a referendum to impose it. And that won, 25-18. But the province didn’t listen, and this week announced that despite Toronto’s second thoughts, a municipality can select its representatives using ranked ballots if council agrees. No need for a referendum; just a vote of council. And we’ll see how that goes when this inevitably comes before council again. I’m not optimistic that it will go any better. A council chamber populated only by very popular councillors would not be the same one we have today. It’s not to say that the 14 councillors and one mayor who couldn’t get 50 per cent plus one on the first ballot would all be gone; they might well have made it up in second and thirdplace choices. But some, like vote-poor Ward 16 Eglinton-Lawrence Christin

Carmichael Greb would have had a real challenge parlaying her 17.4 per cent of the vote into a majority. But broadening her base of appeal, she might have. Who could say? From a campaign strategist’s point of view, particularly one working for an incumbent, that uncertainty makes for a real problem. Simply feeding one’s political base doesn’t ensure a lifetime in municipal politics under a ranked ballot system. In fact, what it does do is ensure that simply catering to one vocal minority in a ward will pretty much guarantee defeat at the polls, because that leaves one a first choice of that minority, and a second choice for no one. For politicians worried about their careers, that’s terrifying. For voters and taxpayers, that’s empowering. It’s a ray of hope. David Nickle is Metroland Media Toronto’s city hall reporter. Students in low-to-medium income families to get tuition help >>>from page 1 single largest modernization-ever” of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), Martins said that the provincial government will make tuition to college and university free for students whose families earn a low or middle income. “We are doing what we need to build a highly skilled workforce,” Martins said. “This blows off the barriers that prevents students from pursuing a college or university diploma.”

The new program will mean the majority of students whose parents earn an annual income of $83,300 or less will receive enough money in grants to more than cover average tuition costs. Additionally, the program will eliminate provincial student loan debt for eligible students whose parents earn less than $50,000 per year. The new Ontario Student Grant will also provide additional support for full-time mature and married

students and eligibility will no longer be tied to the number of years a student has been out of high school. “Ontario has achieved one of the highest post-secondary attainment rates at 66 per cent. Your odds of attaining a post-secondary education decrease if you’re a student from a low-income family,” Martins said. This is a predictable and up front grant, she told the students, which will enable Toronto-area families to plan for their children’s’ education

on the basis of net price: the difference between the sticker price of tuition and what a student has to pay. “You’ll know up front what your tuition will be – in some cases, it will be free,” Martins said. “We’re levelling the playing field regardless of how much your parents make.” Even though the Ontario Student Grant doesn’t come into effect until next year, Martins encouraged this year’s high school graduates to continue with their post-secondary

studies. “There’s a lot of assistance available now,” she said. Christopher Belnavis-Grant, a Grade 12 student, said he was grateful to Martins for visiting his school. “It made me aware of all the opportunity I have,” he said, adding that he plans to study social work at Seneca at the York campus next year. The grants application process will be online.

The family business is known for its high quality, environmentally-friendly teak furniture. The wood used for the pieces is A-grade, plantation grown teak, which means the trees have to be a certain age before they are cut down and placed in ovens to further enhance quality. All iSEKKO furniture is natural and made without the use of chemicals, dyes, glues or toxins. The pieces are assembled by hand and held together

using wooden dowels. iSEKKO sources its supplies from other familyowned businesses. Bench cushions and seat pads come from Canadian fabric supplier Sunbrella, with options ranging from trendy colours and patterns to classic neutrals. Contrary to popular belief, teak does not have to be treated annually and is naturally weatherproof. It is a very versatile and durable wood which works well indoors and out. For more information, call 647-341-8121 or visit isekkoteak.com.

Artist gets solo exhibit at Latitude 44 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Junction’s Latitude 44 presents artist Tia Gillespie’s first solo show – an exhibition the OCAD University graduate always knew would take place at the local gallery because it was where she sold her first pieces. Comprised of representational paintings, Gillespie’s exhibit ‘Searching’ opened recently and runs until Saturday, April 30. “It started out with my interest in the solidification of memory,” Gillespie told The Villager. “How does one take a memory and save it in order to revisit and reflect on the importance of that time or moment? I first focused on the creative people in my life – how by creating images, artworks and pieces of music, they were not only recording their ideas associated to that specific piece, they were preserving in that moment everything that they were focusing on and thinking about during the creation process.”

Her paintings feature subjects in their element: creating, she said. “Being thoughtful, making, reading, or simply being present and in the moment, all of these instances allow for us to notice the connections within our lives,” she said. “Artworks have the capacity to evoke thought, ideas and reflection, which mirror our daily lives. So that’s where the idea for these paintings came from, to act as an inspiration to remind us to be present and still in order to connect our past with our future.” connection made Gillespie connected with Latitude 44 Gallery while she was in her first year at OCAD in 2007. At that time, a fellow student who lived in the Junction and had taken photographs of her work and recommended the gallery owners see her work. “At the time I didn’t realize that this connection would be the beginning of a long relationship with Janet and

Mary Ann at Latitude 44,” Gillespie said. “They really liked my work, so I brought my pieces to them and I ended up showing them as part of a festival in the Junction that year.” Ever since then she said she knew her first solo show would be at Gallery 44. Gillespie paints every day, although it has not yet become a full-time career. Gillespie said she welcomes the candid conversations she has with those she meets working at a pub. “Seeing the reality in people is integral to my work and my own outlook on my work. It is this element of realism that is in the forefront of my journey into preservation,” she said. It was while studying in Florence, Italy, that Gillespie said she truly became interested in representational artwork. The medium has the ability to portray a reality, a moment or an idea that’s relatable and unifying, she said.

The creamy white sauce was a layover from Kailey’s mother’s days as a vegan and a throwback to the Italy her mom had left behind when she was seven. But over time, the creamy cashew concoction became a pet project for both Kailey and her mother. “She and I had always been obsessed with cooking together, that was how we bonded and spent all our time,” says Kailey.

Mom’s Secret Recipe Earns Vegan Entrepreneur Fans Amongst Toronto Carnivores As Well No matter the occasion, a holiday or visit during spring break, Kailey Gilchrist knew that when she made that drive from university in Toronto back home to Barrie, she’d be greeted by a familiar smell – that secret family recipe, her mom’s cashew sauce. “She had been making this cashew sauce for years,” she says.

So when the theatre major went vegan, her mom followed suit and they took to evolving the cashew sauce into a vegan alfredo. It was a work in progress when her mother died. “I was finishing up my degree and cooking like crazy to deal with the grief,” she says. The rest of her time was devoted to working her job demoing products at a health food store. “And my sister was like ‘hey, you should sell some of the stuff that you’re making.’ ” It was an a-ha moment for Kailey. The entrepreneurial theatre major set out perfecting the sauce and launched NONA Vegan Foods, expanding to include two more vegan sauces – carbonara-style and cheesy-style. She’s grown from local, independent shops to over 50 stores including Loblaws and Whole Foods throughout Ontario especially the Greater Toronto Area. To help launch her business, Kailey took advantage of groups like Enterprise Toronto and Futurepreneur, which Kailey received both a loan and mentorship from.“I’m blown away with how many resources there are in Toronto – all these little hubs and networking events and the little communities that just want to support small businesses,” she says.
