CHILLY WATERS: The arrival of spring brings fishermen to the river, like these brave few who took to the frigid waters of the Humber River at the Old Mill bridge on the weekend. Large chunks of ice floated on by as they cast their lines hoping for a catch.

Some High Park area residents said they are debating whether or not to stay in the city during the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games’ men’s and women’s road cycling races, which take place July 25 and Aug. 8. These are free, unticketed events, which originate out of the games’ Ontario Place West Channel, near Exhibition Place. The race route includes Lake Shore Boulevard, Parkside Drive, Ellis and Ellis Park avenues, among others. Kathy Fedun, an Ellis Avenue resident, admitted at a community information meeting last week, that she’s not sure if she’ll stay in town that weekend. Her street will be closed the day before the race. Yet, the City of Toronto has never hosted such a sporting event like the Games before, especially one of this magnitude, “so, maybe I can manage,” Fedun told The Villager. Samantha Rush, another Ellis Avenue resident, was weighing her options. “I think this is good,” said Rush, applauding the city and its partners for hosting such a meeting. “I’m not a big car >>>residents, page 17

Director’s latest production ‘one of the best’ of his theatre career

City to conduct controlled burn in High Park

pretty pysanka

Signs to be posted 24-48 hours in advance

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Director Ross Manson calls his latest work one of the best of his career. He helms a co-production presented by Tarragon Theatre and Volcano Theatre, of which he is founder and artistic director. Infinity is billed as a ‘shocking, funny and revelatory elegy to time and love.’ The play runs until Sunday, May 3 at Tarragon’s Extraspace. The Symington Avenue and Dupont Street-area resident, an award-winning director, actor, and translator, likens a theatrical production to that of a months-old baby. “Sometimes, they can be difficult and colicky, but sometimes they smile at you, too,” Manson told The Villager with a chuckle. “(Infinity) has been one of the best of my career.” Regardless of each individual experience a play brings, Manson says he loves the problem solving that is involved in directing a piece. Infinity tells the story of a set of parents, the father is a theoretical physicist, the mother a composer, and their daughter, a brilliant mathematician. The plot is told through flashbacks when the parents are young and later when their daughter – “brilliant” yet “dysfunctional,” Manson said, is an adult. Commissioned by Manson, the play is interspersed with theoretical physics – it boasts

input from world-renowned physicist Lee Smolin of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics – and classical music. Internationally acclaimed Toronto-based composer Njo Kong Kie also lent his expertise to the play. Both Manson and playwright Hannah Moscovitch were inspired by Smolin’s book ‘Time Reborn’ and asked if he would be a consultant on their work. “One of the great pleasures of working on this project has been working with Lee. It is his physics – his theories that inspired the physics in Infinity,” Moscovitch said in a statement. Manson has directed more than 20 shows that have toured to three continents, and won or been nominated for more than 509 local, national and international awards.

The City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division has contracted a professional Fire Boss to perform prescribed – or controlled burns in High Park and South Humber Park in mid to late April. The burns are part of a long-term management plan to protect and sustain Toronto’s rare black oak woodlands and savannahs. The date for the burns will be planned to coincide with ideal weather conditions and will be announced 24 to 48 hours prior to the burns. Notices will be placed at park entrances to notify users when the burns will take place. People will be restricted from entering areas that are being burned and park users can expect some temporary road closures in High Park and restricted access along some of the dog off-leash trails on the day of the burn. A prescribed burn is a deliberately set and carefully controlled fire that burns low to the ground and consumes dried leaves, small twigs and grass stems, but does not harm larger trees. Under ideal weather conditions, the smoke from the prescribed burns will lift and not affect surrounding neighbourhoods.

Torontonians should Enjoy Toronto more – everyone else does

T

oronto is a fantastic city! You can do virtually anything your heart desires, and with today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto – Metroland Media Toronto’s newest online Arts & Entertainment portal – you can start enjoying so much of what this great city has to offer – all from a community-focused perspective. Toronto was recently ranked the best place to live, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a unit of The Economist magazine. There were 50 global cities included. Granted, Toronto has ranked high in similar studies before, so it’s no surprise the city welcomes more than 25 million visitors annually, spending more than $5 billion and more than $1.5 billion on food and entertainment. However, what many tourists understand we Torontonians sometimes overour view look, even take for granted. Despite Toronto being considArts and culture ered one of the most livable in the world, life for the make Toronto a cities millions of people who call world-class city this city home is ‘wake up, go to work, come home, repeat’. There is so much more to hear, see, read, taste, and do from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to Lake Ontario, Parkdale to the Beach. With today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto (www. insidetoronto.com/EnjoyToronto), we’ve taken a look at what was missing from the pages of the local media, and online. What we discovered is there are so many amazing stories about Torontonians starting a band that suddenly becomes huge (Broken Social Scene comes to mind), or a filmmaker who grew up in the city and is now world-renowned (David Cronenberg for one), or an award-winning author who started filling pages in Hogtown (Margaret Atwood for instance). We took all those great stories and put them under one roof: Enjoy Toronto. When visiting the site, make sure to click around the various sections – Hear, See, Read, Taste, and Do – and get an idea of some of the events, movies, music and stories told by Torontonians, both new and old. We build the city we want to live in, and not just in a brick-and-mortar way. The arts and culture scene across the city adds to what a truly world-class city is all about. We owe it to ourselves to get to know Toronto through different lenses; taking in the arts, entertainment and culture builds a better city.

Big Data monitoring of Toronto traffic comes with a price

O

ne of the big problems Mayor John Tory came into office promising to solve was also one of the most ubiquitous: traffic. He started out strong and without even a council vote behind him, rallying city staff and law enforcement into a blitz against illegal parking during rush hour, and very quickly claimed at least anecdotal success: people were telling him their commutes were getting easier. It was harder to quantify, though, because as it turns out the city doesn’t really do much to reliably monitor the intensity of rush hour traffic. It looks as though that’s about to change. On April 7, Tory announced the city would be looking at high-tech ways to monitor traffic density, pedestrian congestion, bicycle efficiency, all of that. How? Two words: Big Data. This, of course, is a

david nickle the city simple phrase for a complexity of information about all of us provided by everything from bank transactions to web page visits, but principally, in this case, by our smartphones. The idea is to use the smartphone networks that help us use our navigation functions to tell city traffic planners where exactly we are, and what it’s likely we’re doing. So whether it’s a crowd of us trying to decipher the scramble intersection at Yonge and Dundas, or a line of us trying to manage a left turn at Yonge and Sheppard, city traffic planners will have a line on it. For the purpose of traffic management, it’s a powerful tool. Unchecked, it is a privacy nightmare. Of course, Big Data is unchecked. Edward

The idea is to use the smartphone networks that help us use our navigation functions to tell city traffic planners where exactly we are, and what it’s likely we’re doing.

Snowdon, currently hiding in Russia, provided evidence of just how unchecked it is. Huge amounts of information about our private lives are neatly filed in NSA (National Security Agency) computers in the United States. Almost as much is in the hands of Google and Facebook and even of the developers of games about angry birds, and those little flashlight apps on our smartphones. We signed the end user agreement on that information a long time ago and

barely realized it. Given that, maybe it’s worth it to allow a little more information about our whereabouts to be collected and collated, so the city can manage its traffic light energy grid more efficiently and keep streetcars running more effectively. It is naïve, however, to expect Toronto will be able to access that kind of service without giving up quite a lot of the presumed privacy of its citizens and particularly as the city engages private sector data mining firms to do the work. It’s unreasonable to think that the best ones will limit their measurements to the amount of time it takes to drive the Don Valley Parkway from Queen Street to Eglinton Avenue at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday. Everything has a price. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Metrolinx hopes to keep city’s chief planner off public panel Metrolinx is set to reject an official request from the city to have Toronto’s chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat sit on an upcoming public panel studying options for improving the Davenport Diamond rail-crossing lands. Before a council vote approving the request took place, Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said while city staff is providing “key” assistance for the project, the panel itself should be open only to local residents. ADDS NEW STEETCAR TO FLEET wTTC

Toronto’s delayed new streetcar fleet expanded by one last week. The TTC announced the new low-floor streetcar, number 4406, had entered service as of Wednesday, April 1. It will run for the time being, along with the four new streetcars already in service, on the Harbourfront 509 line as the TTC continues track replacement work on the 510 Spadina

line, where the new rides made their debut in 2014. The TTC still thinks it can have all of the new vehicles in service by the end of 2019. EXPRESS EXPECTED TO LAUNCH IN MAY wUP

With the Union Pearson (UP) Express getting set to make its debut, Metrolinx says it will announce an official launch date once safety and emergency testing for the four-stop rail connection between Union Station and Pearson International Airport is completed. The testing is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 28 and intended to evaluate UP’s readiness in case of emergency. It’s widely expected UP will begin running in early May. 4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting is ranked as a top 20 roofing company in North America, when providing long term customer warranties. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 13 times (including 2014).

It was great to hear that but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.” The design process will be “extensive as it is a major project,” said Clive Scott, who represented Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks, who was at a council meeting. “We want as much community consultation as possible when the time arrives.” The announcement was made at the Wabash Building Society’s annual general meeting April 2 at the Sorauren Park Fieldhouse. Once completed the centre will be a city-owned and operated community centre. The centre currently sits seventh on a list of eight community centres, just ahead of the Wellesley Community Centre, on the City of Toronto’s priority list which fits into the City of Toronto’s overall 10-year capital plan for 2015-2025. But the way Shillington sees it, the plan presented to the community seems within reach, it is still an

extended waiting game. “Before the city was amalgamated we were second or third on the list – that was 20 years ago,” Shillington said. According to Kathy Allan, another volunteer co-director, the community will need to come together during the consultation process in 2017 to do another needs assessment study. The first one was conducted 15 years ago.

“We have to do it all over again, as we should because in the last 15 years this neighbourhood has changed significantly. There are different people, different needs, different age groups,” Allan said. The community has a list of ideas for the centre which include a community kitchen, multipurpose rooms, a fitness centre, a pool, gymnasium and talks of a daycare centre.

In 2009 the community group also conducted a Wabash Green Feasibility Study, with Oleson Worland_Taylor Smyth Architects, which envisioned retro-fitting the existing building a major detail that remains top priority today. “For me we need to keep the chimney and the whole shape of the building. I would like to keep every outer brick of the building and gut the whole inside,” Allan said. “I’m very wedded to it and I would fight for it to make sure it would happen.” But even that may be a difficult request. The community has been waiting for so long that the building is deteriorating and with this additional 10-year wait who knows what the state of the building. This could mean the building may need to be torn down, but Shillington said the idea of preserving the building was welcomed with open arms by the community. “There’s something about that building, it’s been our beacon really for so long. We know it’s a lot of work but I think it reflects the history of the neighbourhood.”

Lowering your Car Insurance can have Devastating Results

G

et ready to pick your jaw off the floor. I am a personal injury lawyer who is encouraging you to spend more money on insurance coverage. It may seem strange given that I spend my days fighting against these very companies on behalf of injured plaintiffs. Let me explain why. Most people in Ontario have 1 million in coverage. Sounds like a lot right? It’s not at all. If you are in a car accident with minor injuries that is more than sufficient, however, if you are involved in an accident where you cause someone else major injuries (e.g. brain injury, paraplegic, quadriplegic) then you are on the hook personally for everything over that 1 million. This can have devastating

effects on both an emotional and financial level. You may think you are such a great driver that the Indy 500 is second from knocking down your door. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really matter. If some joe shmo (that is the legal term) hits you and you or your family member is injured badly, and good old joe has 1 million of coverage, you only have 1 million to access. Now, this is where it gets complicated so pay attention, if you have 2 million and he has 1 million, your insurer will kick in the extra million. So basically if your policy has 2 million you are covered for 2 million regardless of the insurance policy of joe shmo. Make sense? The best thing to do is speak with a broker. Make sure you have enough insurance to cover you if you are hit. Think about how much you would need if you could never work again. This is a very real possibility for some of my clients. Then once you have that number, make sure you are covered for that amount. Yes, insurance is already expensive, however saving money could cost you dearly later. Help students to attend prom in style Gibson’s Cleaners Co., Ltd. is partnering with New Circles to collect and clean gently used formal wear for its annual ‘Get in Gear for Graduation Program.’ The initiative provides students facing socio-economic barriers a chance to attend their high school graduation and prom in style. Students will have the opportunity to shop from a wide selection of gowns, shoes, purses, as well as suits, shirts and ties at the Prom Boutique. New Circles also provides students

with a personal shopper to ensure everything fits just right. The Prom Boutique’s success depends on donations from across the Greater Toronto Area and Gibson’s’ customers always come through when there is a need. “Last year we saw overwhelming support from the community,” Nancy McConnell, vice president of Gibson’s Cleaners, said. “We saw an opportunity to not only help collect prom attire, but also clean and press them, too.”

Last year, Gibson’s collected and cleaned more than 400 pieces of formal attire and hope to increase the number this year. Donations will be accepted until April 17 at any one of the four Gibson’s locations, including 4241 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke, 258 Beresford Ave., Bloor West Village, 1 Bartley Bull Parkway, Brampton or 3449 Dundas St. W. at Windermere Avenue. Residents will have front row seats to ‘one of the greatest cycling races’ >>>from page 1 driver.” If she and her family stay in Toronto during the Games, they’ll leave the car at home. Although, she said they are considering a trip to the cottage up Hwy. 400, which could mean some important strategizing. This summer, Toronto and the greater Golden Horseshoe region will host 2,000 athletes from 41 countries, competing in 51 sports at 30 venues in 16 municipalities. “That’s a fantastic thing in terms of sharing the Canadian experience with people,” Doug Spooner, senior manager, Transportation Partner Integration and Planning, told his audience that had gathered at Swansea Town Hall. “But it presents challenges in terms of transportation.” The Games are expected to attract 250,000 visitors while there are 1.4 million tickets for sale. “One of our strategies is that transit will be included with your ticket,” Spooner said. “ We have unticketed events like the marathon and road races coming through High Park. They’re free. What you have to do is get there and enjoy them.” Several events will originate at Ontario Place West, including the road races, marathon race/walk, triathlon, open water swimming, waterski and wakeboard. Pointing to a map, Spooner indicated that there won’t be any parking (except for accessible parking) in the entire area. Visitors must walk, wheel, cycle or take public transit. “This really is a transit first or walk, wheel or cycle Games,” Spooner said. Bloor Street West and The Queensway will remain open to vehicular traffic throughout the Games, however, the two north lanes of The Queensway will be used for the men’s and women’s

concern over potential construction, traffic impacts in the neighbourhood >>>from page 1 during a pre-application meeting hosted by local Ward 14 councillor for ParkdaleHigh Park, Gord Perks Tuesday night. The condo would be located at 422-230 Roncesvalles Avenue and 76 Howard Park Avenue, the former home of the Turner and Porter Funeral Home and would consist of two levels of underground parking, one commercial level at the ground floor, seven residential floors with the ninth floor housing rooftop amenities. There would also be a second residential structure that would amount to fourstoreys facing Howard Park Avenue with terraces. In total the condo would have 111 units, with roughly one-third of them being two-bedroom units. According to Roland Rom Colthoff with Raw Design, the architectural firm behind the project, the units would be fairly large in size up to 2,500 square feet. However, the 75 one-bedroom units would begin at the common 600 square-foot size range and could possibly increase from there. As for parking there will be 90 spaces available underground. The requested height for the condo is above the City

of Toronto’s current Avenues and Midrise Building Study, which calls for a 20-metre height; this condo would total 25-metres. The building would also largely be made up of red brick, a detail that was appreciated by a handful of residents. “To me I thought it was quite beautiful. I like the red brick and glass,” said Lorraine Cramp, an executive member of the High Park Residents’ Association. “I also like what it’s not – it’s not an awful glass box. By making use of the wide brick pillars and the relatively narrow windows, this is one of the best attempts I have seen at trying to capture the feeling of turn-of-the-century warehouse or office buildings.” too tall for residents? But Cramp, like many of the other residents, still believes it’s too tall for the neighbourhood. Some commented that the structure is too big and it doesn’t capture the character of the neighbourhood at all. Others called the design downright ugly. “It’s just another juggernaut of a building that will ruin the area,” said Marianna’s husband Douglas Richardson.

“It’s going to be a monstrous eyesore.” Parking concerns were also raised, as many residents currently have a hard time finding a place to park despite living in the neighbourhood and purchasing a parking permit. The shadows the proposed building would cast also came into question, but according to Perks because it is a pre-application meeting and nothing has been filed to the city yet, those studies will be conducted post application. Residents on Howard Park Avenue had the most concerns. Developers plan to have their construction materials and trucks load onto the site via the residential street as opposed to Roncesvalles because it’s seen as less busy. But as one resident argued, the neighbouring school, Howard Park Jr. Public School, creates ample traffic on a daily basis with cars and school buses moving in and out and the fact that Howard Park is often used as a thoroughfare for cars during heavy traffic. One resident who heard this called it blatant disrespect for the neighbourhood.

Drop-in mental, sexual health clinic supports west-end youth LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A new kids’ health clinic in Davenport Village designed by youth for youth is the first of its kind to open in the area. Davenport MPP Cristina Martins shared those words during the grand opening of EdgeWest Healthcare for Youth this month. Situated on Davenport Road, just west of Symington Avenue, the clinic was made possible through a collaboration among the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Community Health Centre (DPNCH), Planned Parenthood Toronto and LOFT Community Services. Opened since December, the clinic provides free and confidential medical, sexual and mental-health services in one drop-in centre. “Research shows that young people in the west end have poor health outcomes,” DPNCH chair Wade Hillier told those who had gathered for the

clinic’s launch event March 31. “In response to that research, we reached out to more than 300 youth.” Young people in Davenport have reported a lack of access to services prevents them from receiving the health care they need. That’s why teens and young adults played an integral role in developing the new clinic. EdgeWest serves 13 to 29 year olds and offers free and confidential medical,

mental, and sexual health-care services in a youth-positive environment. “I want to thank everyone at Davenport Perth for their valuable services,” Martins said. To access EdgeWest, youth must live in the area bounded by Islington Avenue to the west, Bathurst Street to the east, Bloor Street West to the south and Eglinton Avenue to the north. Health insurance is not required, however, clients must register at the clinic. No appointments or referrals are necessary. EdgeWest is open Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s located at 1900 Davenport Rd., inside the small house next to the main entrance. It is accessible from Dundas West subway station on the 168 Symington bus. If you would like further details, visit www.dpnchc.com or on Twitter @edgewestTO

Annette library to benefit from Function in the Junction Proceeds from the sixth annual Function in the Junction will go toward Annette Street Library. Presented by the Junction Residents Association and a host of sponsors, the Function takes place at the West Toronto Masonic Temple, 151 Annette St., Saturday, April 11. The evening includes a three-course dinner, silent and live auctions, live music and cash bar. “This is the Junction. The Junction is a great neighbourhood. This is a chance to celebrate who we are,” Linda Nagy, chair of the Junction Residents Association, told The Villager. Funds raised will go toward a new sound system for the library. above and beyond the basic expenses for the library, which are paid by municipal property taxes. “Depending on how much money is raised, if there’s any leftover, it’ll go toward kids’ and seniors’ programming,” Nagy said.

Last year’s event raised $3,700. “Our goal this year is to sell all tickets – 100, that’s our capacity,” she said. Tickets are available in advance at Latitude 44 Gallery, 2900 Dundas St. W., and Agora Cafe, 3015 Dundas St. W. Tickets are also available for $5 each after 8 p.m. at the door for the live music and cash bar. “We have a dual mandate for the event: to raise money for a worthy cause and to bring people together in the Junction for a really fun night,” Nagy said. – Lisa Rainford
