ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Every morning Kevin Brooks wakes up, there’s a wheelchair beside him that reminds him of his “nightmare”: killing his friend in a drunk driving crash. It began as a typical warm Saturday in June 2000. Brooks, then 21, was hanging out with his high school sweetheart and watched her ride in a horse show. He then went to

his youngest sister’s ballet recital. After the event, Brooks attended a house party where he thought he’d have a few beers and then call it a night. But that never happened. “I ran into some old school hockey friends I’d grown up with, and one thing led to another, and we were down to have a wild night,” Brooks said. And they hopped from one party to another. At one point during the night, Brooks

returned home to get more beer. The British Columbia resident wasn’t yet “blackout drunk” and stopped in front of his car thinking something bad could happen. “We all have that voice inside that warns us at times,” Brooks said. “That was one moment where I was still consciously aware of what was going on and had that opportunity to make the better choice and chose not to.” Brushing off the warning, Brooks con>>>a mistake, page 3

Stopped at a traffic light Tuesday, avid cyclist Chantelle Campbell-Sholzberg didn’t hesitate when asked what she thought of the new bike lanes going in on Bloor Street West from Shaw Street to Avenue Road. “Amazing,” the Bloor West and Shaw streets-area resident told The Villager as construction got underway. For 25 years, cycling has been Campbell-Sholzberg’s main mode of transportation in the city. “I commute with my bike. Biking in general is great – although it can sometimes be difficult with the cars,” she admitted. “But I’m a pretty good defensive rider.” Just that morning, Campbell-Sholzberg said she was impressed to see a father transporting his children by bicycle behind him in a trailer. Left to right: Kevin Brooks’ crumpled car after the crash that killed his friend and left him paralyzed; Brooks standing with his two sisters at his sister Allison’s graduation. This was taken the night before the car crash - June 23, 2000 – and was the last photo ever taken of Brooks standing with his family.

A mistake that lingers, 16 years later >>>from page 1 tinued drinking and partying hard. “By the time we were leaving the last house party, we were all really drunk,” Brooks said. “We were double digit drinks for sure. I’d say well over 10, probably pushing 20.” Three of Brooks’ buddies got in a cab, but before it left, one friend, Brendon, got out and opted to travel with Brooks. “I was like the stubborn idiot who wanted to drive drunk,” Brooks said. “From what I’ve heard, people were trying to get my keys away from me, but I had an extra pair in the glove box. ... In hindsight, too bad somebody didn’t just punch me out.” Brooks and Brendon were speeding to another party. “Going 110 to 130 in a 70 zone, just stupid. Beers are open, tunes cranked, totally not paying attention,” Brooks said. “I don’t remember what happened. I missed a corner, and the car hit a road divider and went airborne, hit the ground and rolled multiple times.” Weeks later, Brooks woke up in an intensive care unit and learned that he had been in a crash and that he was paralyzed from the chest down.

“A little bit later, I asked about who was with me and found out my buddy Brendon passed away. That was the worst thing I’d ever heard in my life,” Brooks said. “He’s gone and dealing with that was a nightmare.” Brooks contemplated suicide but was confined to a bed, too weak to even move. With the support of his family, best friend and Brendon’s family, Brooks’ outlook began to change. “It allowed me a chance not to totally give up,” he said of the support. After a two-month hospital stay, Brooks was transferred to a rehabilitation centre where he learned to dress himself, roll over in bed, sit up and get around in a wheelchair. It was a new life for Brooks, who had been an active man. “I could play every sport decently. I skateboarded, I snowboarded, I played hockey. I was just go, go, go, and then all of a sudden, boom, I’m in a chair.” His future career as an electrician was over, his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years left him and he faced criminal charges from the crash. “And dealing with the fact that I killed a buddy, there was so much to deal with,”

he said. Brooks pled guilty to dangerous driving causing death; a charge of impaired driving causing death was dropped. “I lost my licence for three years. There were community hours and probation but no jail time,” Brooks said. “I still look at it as light.” Brooks said he felt something good had to come from the tragedy, and about two years after the collision, he began sharing his story at schools in the hopes of preventing drinking and driving. “I used to be a server and I’d be scared if I had 10 people at a table, so getting in front of an entire gymnasium of teenagers was terrifying, but once I started talking, I just sunk into a bit of a groove,” he said. “Then after, I was just mobbed by kids and they were crying, thanking me and shaking my hand. There was a connection made.” Brooks has now delivered more than 1,000 presentations across Canada and the U.S. “It’s been a saving grace for me to have a positive outlet for what happened,” he said. “I can’t say I’m proud of the journey that led me on it, but I found it and I just keep looking forward.”

Remaining vigilant against impaired driving

I

t’s sad we still have to warn people about the dangers of impaired driving; one would have hoped the message had been received loud and clear by now, but that is unfortunately not the case. In today’s editions of our papers, we look at the consequences of impaired driving, from the standpoint of a woman whose life was forever altered after being struck by a driver who was impaired, and from the perspective of a young man who killed one of his best friends after crashing a car while driving drunk. These are tragic stories, and in both cases they could have been avoided. We ask all our readers to think hard about the toll impaired driving can take on the lives of so many people and to make sure they take the necessary steps to avoid such tragedies. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of not driving impaired – be it from alcohol, prescription drugs or marijuana. It’s critical for all to remember OuR ViEW that alcohol is not the only cause of impaired driving. Be responsible As our stories show, there’s concern among police before getting growing about what impact Canada’s behind wheel new marijuana laws will have on impaired driving. Police are preparing for a spike in drivers “one toke over the line”, and the Ontario Provincial Police are training officers to specifically detect drugimpaired drivers. While police admit that it will remain to be seen whether drug-impaired driving increases in Canada, evidence from the state of Colorado (where marijuana is legal) indicates one in eight of its impaired driving citations in 2014 involved pot use. Clearly, as the federal government moves toward relaxing Canada’s marijuana-use laws it will have to take into account how drug-impaired driving is determined by police, and what standards the courts will be setting for criminal charges. It is critical that the message gets out that drugimpaired driving is as socially and morally unacceptable as drunk driving. Further complicating the dangers on our roads is the “grey” area of those driving (often unknowingly) under the influence of prescription drugs. Patients and doctors must improve their level of understanding about the impact of prescription drugs and medications on the ability of a person to drive, and make sure that information is available. We all need to take a greater level of responsibility about our actions, and the decisions we make, before we get behind the wheel of a vehicle. newsroom ph:

column

Bloor bike lanes address city’s growing cycling needs I’m usually pretty careful riding a bike on Toronto streets, but last week I had a near thing. Riding down Coxwell Avenue on my way to a Mayor John Tory press event, I thought I could make it past some road work that pushed very close to streetcar tracks, and as it turned out, I couldn’t, not quite. So when the front tire slipped into the streetcar track, it went over and I nearly did too; somehow managing to get off the bike without really falling myself. Lucky me. Seriously. Lucky me. In July, a study by Ryerson University and the University of British Columbia on bike accidents in Toronto found that fully a third of the serious ones were caused by cyclist’s tires either getting caught in the tracks or slipping across them. Usually, there were no

david nickle the city bike lanes and the cyclists reported trying to maneuver around parked cars or other obstacles. And it happens a lot. Between 2005 and 2014, the city has charted 1,232 cyclist collisions – a number that doesn’t include simple mishaps. The whole thing adds a bit of perspective to the new pilot project that got underway this week to try out separated bike lanes on Bloor Street. There are no streetcar tracks on Bloor Street, but there are an awful lot of cars, and the stretch through the Annex is a well-documented hazard for cyclists trying to get across town. It’s been a pain for auto drivers, during this relatively short construction period, with two of the four lanes of traffic there

shut down, and there will probably be some more pain – or at least mild discomfort – as the pilot runs its course. Drivers are going to have to get used to it, because the status quo is a precarious place right now. More people are choosing to bike to and from work than ever. And while the city has provided some good cycling infrastructure – a total of 558.4 kilometres of on-street bike lanes, before the Bloor project is counted – Toronto also has 82 kilometres of those tirecatching streetcar tracks to contend with. Cycling is safer in Toronto, but it’s hardly as safe as it might be. The authors of the study that appeared in the BMC Public Health journal in July had a couple of recommendations short of getting rid of all those streetcar tracks. Bike lanes, obviously, are crucial – but they also rec-

ommend fully-separated streetcar tracks, like those on Spadina or St. Clair. The city can do other things, too. Simply patching potholes on well-cycled routes – or all routes, for that matter – would go a long way to making a safer, smoother commute for cyclists. Providing more places to safely lock bikes might not make things safer, but might be more effective. But in the short term, running a successful pilot project along one of the great, city-spanning streets, and working diligently to build out the bike plan that Toronto Council approved earlier in the summer, is an excellent step toward syncing the city’s form with the needs of a growing number of its residents.

Sharing food and making newcomer connections liSa rainForD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As the founder of The Depanneur, a venue whose mission is to highlight the diversity of Toronto’s culinary talent, Len Senater has made it his business to connect people through the art of cooking. Playing host to thousands of pop-up dining and food experiences, Senater says he has witnessed the magic that can happen when one invites others to create in one’s kitchen. That’s why, when he heard about the plight of Syrian refugees who had just arrived in Toronto and were living in hotel rooms – some for extended periods of time – Senater took action. “I don’t like it when I’m staying in a hotel for a weekend and can’t cook. These were whole families who couldn’t cook for themselves,” he told The Villager. Initially, he thought it’d be

a simple task to connect with the Syrian refugee women to invite them to use The Depanneur, in the College Street and Dovercourt Road area. However, it took several weeks and a chance meeting with a volunteer who was working with a young refugee couple who reached out on Senater’s behalf. Senater’s “simple idea” led to what has been coined the ‘Newcomer Kitchen.’ The first cooking session, which took place in midApril, saw Syrian refugee mothers cooking together and collaborating on several authentic dishes. By early May, newcomers were no longer living in hotel rooms, but had found more permanent digs. Their goal, Senater said, became not just making food, but also making a living. The meals went up for sale online and sold out almost immediately. Jawaher Al Shaikh, who arrived in February with her

happy to be in Canada. “People here have a good heart, and I expect that everything will be good,” she said. The women cook at The Depanneur every Thursday. The meals are publicized through The Depanneur’s newsletter, website and facebook page before going on sale Tuesday morning. They are then available Thursday evening for pickup or free delivery (within three kilometres). “There’s an incredible interest in their situation,” Senater said of the newcomers. “Lots of Canadians want to help, but aren’t able to sponsor a whole family. This is a way to make a connection.” Through the sale of the food, the women are paid $15 an hour. A recent crowdfunding campaign raised more than $25,000 towards turning the Newcomer Kitchen into a non-profit organization, a model that could be used by

daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren, said through an interpreter that she was ever-so-grateful for the opportunity to cook with others while living in a hotel room. “Cooking is very important because for a Syrian woman, she has to be a good cook,”

Al Shaikh said. The women, Senater said, have “an incredible pride in their culinary heritage.” “They’re proud to share their skills and heritage with their new hosts. They want to give back.” Al Shaikh, who is learning to read and write in English, is

newcomers in any kitchen in any city. What is costly is the support needed to enable the women to cook, including transportation, childcare, translation and administrative support. There is still opportunity to make a contribution, Senater stressed. Next on the to-do list: to host a party for the ladies and their families to “celebrate what we’ve accomplished,” Senater said. Launching soon is a new Syrian brunch program at The Depanneur featuring dishes created by the Syrian newcomers. Ten women have earned their food handler certification in partnership with Toronto Public Health. “It’s not even been three months and we’ve accomplished so much. We’ve only begun to unpack the potential and possibility that this project can offer,” Senater said. Visit thedepanneur.ca/ about/newcomerkitchen for details.

so much – that I have to announce I’m withdrawing from the leadership race.” DiNovo had been the first and only candidate, so far, to confirm a leadership bid for the NDP in early June. At the time she also announced she would not be paying the $30,000 entrance fee; however shortly after, she announced she would do her best to fundraise the

money after an outpouring of verbal support to do so. She said she’s confident a candidate who shares her vision for the NDP party will step forward. The NDP is slated to elect its new leader no later than Oct. 29, 2017, to replace outgoing leader Tom Mulcair who did not survive a leadership review earlier this year.

Petition calls for lower speed limits Ward 13 is one step closer to seeing its residential street speeds reduced to 30 kilometres per hour. Etobicoke York Community Council (EYCC) passed Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette’s motion that called for a report from the city’s transportation services on changing the speed limits on local, residential roads to 30 km/h. Community council

will vote on the issue in September. A growing number of residents have indicated their desire for a 30 km/h speed limit, like in Toronto’s downtown wards and cities around the world, Doucette said. Groups such as the High Park Residents’ Association, the Junction and Bloor West Village business improvement areas, and the Swansea Historical society, among

Bloor loses lanes during work Province approves rail project >>>from page 1 than 2,100 people responded), more than 79 per cent of a variety of respondents said they relied regularly on their bike to travel along Bloor Street West. Katrina Ker is one of those people who choose to navigate the city on her bike. In fact, she had just moved from Parkdale to Shaw Street for its bike lanes. “I was wondering when (construction) would start,” Ker said. “I’m always glad for more bike lanes. I work in the Distillery District. It takes me half an hour to get there on my bike. On the streetcar, it would take me an hour.” Robbie Pennant was locking up his bike on Bloor Street West when he admitted he hadn’t heard about the installation of bike lanes. A volunteer in the neighbourhood, whose primary mode of transportation is his bicycle, he was skeptical. “Cars are just going to park in them,” he said. When asked about the

The provincial government has issued its stamp of approval on the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) for Metrolinx’s Davenport Diamond Grade Separation project, announced Davenport MPP Cristina Martins Tuesday. In a letter to her constituents, Martins said the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change signed and approved the provincial

transit agency’s final report Tuesday, which was submitted in May. While the TPAP has officially been approved and Metrolinx can proceed with the project, a community advisory committee, comprised of local residents and organizations, will continue to discuss in depth the project’s design. The TPAP was a six-month environmental assessment of

The bridge, Metrolinx said, is necessary in order to double the existing service on the Barrie corridor.

safety of cycling in Toronto, Pennant pointed to the cyclist that was killed late last month at Dupont Street and Lansdowne Avenue. “There really is a war between cars and bikes.” Jay Reid, who works at Loft Kitchen in the Bloor Street West and Christie Street area, said many of her customers are cyclists. “It’ll be easier for them once they have their own

lanes,” Reid said. As a pedestrian, she said she has to dodge cyclists who ride on the sidewalk. Reid said she hopes the installation of the new bike lanes will alleviate the problem. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction from Shaw Street to Avenue Road. Crews will be working on a 24-hour basis Monday to Friday and maybe weekends, if necessary.

Vote on whether to remove the Co-chairs and Treasurer as of July 14, 2016 from the Board of Directors. As outlined in Section 7.c, Article Six of the PPR Constitution, each of the Co-chairs and the Treasurer will be offered the chance to speak at the Special Members’ Meeting before a vote is taken. 3. If all three members of the Executive are removed from the Board of Directors, elect new Board members so that Board quorum can be met. 4. At left, Etobicoke School of the Arts students visited Junction-based Moss & Lam art studio for a day in March, during which they worked on a couple of large-scale art installations set to be on display at Canada Olympic House during this summer’s 2016 Rio Games. Junction firm sends art to Rio’s Canada Olympic House CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com When her art studio was commissioned to design and create a series of iconic art installations to display at Canada Olympic House during this summer’s Rio Games, Deborah Moss knew she wanted to share the ‘oncein-a-lifetime’ experience with young artists. “What I really love about the Olympic project is that it’s for everyone. I mean, how often do we, as artists, get to do something this public and this meaningful?” Moss, co-founder of Junction-based art studio Moss & Lam, said of her decision to include Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) in the project. “I thought if we could invite

students to lend a hand, they could see how art impacts people and how artists can contribute to the world.” That idea culminated with the ESA students’ one-day visit in mid-March to the Moss & Lam headquarters near Dundas and Keele. There, they spent hours painting Canadian Tire-donated canoe paddles and cutting and gluing thousands of strips of red and white material for what would become two signature art installations at Canada Olympic House – including a giant Canadian flag designed as the focal point of Team Canada’s Celebration Room. The whole experience – including a visit from Canadian Olympic cyclist Hugo Barrette – was

captured on video at bit. ly/2b2nQGm “To know that the athletes’ eyes are going to be on the work that we’re doing, that it’ll be part of their experience and part of the memories that they’re going to have for the rest of their lives, it’s incredibly meaningful for us,” Matthew Varey, head of the visual arts program at ESA, said in the video. In addition to the ESA students’ one-day contribution to the Canada Olympic House projects, Moss said she had a team of eight dedicated artists working on the largescale installations for nearly a month straight in order to meet the tight deadline. The finished materials were then shipped out to Canada Olympic House’s headquar-

ters in Rio de Janeiro in April, where just last week a team of Moss & Lam artists flew out to supervise their installation in advance of athletes’ arrival for the 2016 Rio Games. “It’s looking fantastic. I was getting goosebumps just looking at the photos they brought back,” Moss said. “I think it represents the pride we have in the athletes and

in our country.” For his part, Barrette – who’s slated to compete in the men’s keirin track cycling event – said he’s looking forward to enjoying the fruits of the ESA and Moss & Lam artists’ labours when he gets to visit Canada Olympic House later this month. “When you’re in Canada House as an athlete, you’re at

home,” he said in the video capturing his March visit to Moss & Lam’s art studio. “When I see all that work that is being done right now to improve Canada House, but also involving young kids in this project, I think it’s inspiring...We’re definitely going to have the best athletes’ house in the world.”
