LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The detective investigating a series of commercial breakins along Bloor Street West between Jane and Dufferin streets over the past two years believes the suspect is local and is seeking local residents’ help in identifying him. The man targets liquor license establish-

ments, bringing his own bags to fill. Once out of room in the bags, he stuffs additional bottles in his clothing, according to Det. Kirby Reddin, of the 11 Division Crime Unit. “I’m almost positive the suspect is local,” Reddin told The Villager, adding he thinks he steals full bottles of alcohol to sell to bars in the area at a lower cost. “That’s my feeling.”

The most recent incident occurred about two weeks ago on Bloor Street West at Dufferin Street. Surveillance video from that location provides very clear images of the suspect, who appears to be in his mid-40s. The break-ins take place between midnight and 4 a.m., Reddin said. “My feeling is, he’s doing this to support >>ROBBERIES, page 9

NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com When Isaiah Masek-Kelly runs on to the field with his Toronto Rush professional ultimate disc team Saturday at the new 18,000-seat Avaya Stadium in San Jose, he can thank the 40 hours of community service he carried out while attending Harbord Collegiate in downtown Toronto. The star player for the Toronto Rush, who grew up in the Dovercourt Road and Bloor Street area, recalled doing his volunteer work at Palmerston Avenue Junior Public School, which his sister was attending at the time. “They had an elementary team, and I had never played before. And so I would learn the game there while coaching them,” he said in a phone interview. Masek-Kelly liked it so much he helped to create the ultimate disc team at Harbord Collegiate. “There was a teacher who played, so he was interested in coaching, so I got him on board, and we created a team,” he said. He pursued the sport at the club and national levels and went on to the ultimate level – starring with the Toronto Rush in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). Masek-Kelly is the team leader in goals, assists and blocks (defensive play resulting in a turnover), and is also one of only three players in

AUDL history to record more than 50 goals and 50 assists. The team splits its games between Lamport Stadium and Varsity Centre which, he pointed out, “is right in my neighbourhood – a 10-minute bike ride.” The Toronto Rush have been a huge success story on the field, having only lost two games in their short history, going into this final weekend of their third season. One of those losses was a regular league game against Montreal Royal earlier this season, marking their first regular season loss. Their other loss, however, was in last year’s AUDL championship game to the San Jose Spiders. In 2013, the Toronto Rush won the AUDL championship, capping off an unde-

feated season. This time around, the Toronto Rush will meet San Jose in the semifinal Saturday (with the other semifinal pitting the Raleigh Flyers against Madison Radical). All are their respective division playoff champs. The winners play the AUDL championship Sunday. established in the city The Toronto Rush were put in Toronto by Rob Lloyd, recently retired co-president of Cisco Systems. The franchise was available and his son, Mark, is a veteran star player in his own right, although he’s out for the season and concentrating on his GM duties with the team. “We generally get about

800 to 1,000 fans, sometimes 1,200 depending on the weather,” said the elder Lloyd. As for why he picked the downtown venues, he said: “We’re in the heart of Toronto. People can walk to us, they can take the subway, they can ride a bike, you can watch the game from outside the fence if you don’t have $12 to get in. “Those two locations (Lamport Stadium and Varsity Centre) are really critical to how we appeal to our audience.” All three of championship weekend’s games will be broadcast via ESPN3.

Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

Straight talk about the dog days of summer My message box got a serious workout over the long weekend. It was standing and screaming room only in there. Everybody was whining up a storm. But it wasn’t about the hot weather. It was about the phrase du jour referring to it. Q. Jamie, I always hate the beginning of August. The only expression we ever hear is the ‘dog days of summer’. We’re bombarded with it. The dog days of summer, the dog days of summer, the dog days of summer. Enough already. This has been going on for donkey’s years. No other creatures get even a mention until they’re over. It makes me angry as a bear, I tell ya. When are we finally going to get equal time in the summer for the rest of the animal kingdom? – Gord the Gorilla A. In the next few minutes, Gordo. I don’t want

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY to let the cat out of the bag, but a little bird told me that by the end of the column all will be forgotten and you’ll be happy as a clam. Q. Do you really mean it, Jamie? I’ve had ants in my pants over this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. – Karina the Kangaroo A. Cross my heart. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Q. Wait a minute. I thought you just got through saying it was a bird that gave you the news. This all sounds rather fishy if you ask me. – Arnold the Armadillo A. Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. The horse called first. The bird tweeted right after. OK? Q. Jamie, do you mind if

I talk turkey for a second? – Penelope the Peacock A. Would you be a lamb and try back around Thanksgiving? I promised to resolve this dog days of summer controversy before the end of the column. If I don’t do it, I have a hunch I’ll be hearing about it until the cows come home. Q. You’ll be hearing about it long after they arrive, too. No other animals can get on the map this time of year. It’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. Don’t you think it’s time to accept that you’re barking up the wrong tree? – Zoe the Zebra. A. On the contrary, I was about to pull a rabbit out of a hat here. Anything is possible. All you have to do is believe. Q. Yeah and pigs might fly, too. Sorry, but I’m with Zoe on this. – Wally the Walrus A. Boo hoo. I’m crying crocodile tears. I hate to

break it to the two of you, but it’s all just water off this duck’s back. I guarantee you’ll both be eating crow. But it’s not up to me. I’ll leave the deciding vote to the final questioner of the day. Q. I believe. I believe. I believe. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the most important part of this discussion. After I’m done eating, any chance of going back for seconds? As far as I’m concerned one can never get enough crow and you can see by my attached selfie that I’m a growing boy. – Harvey the Hippotamus A. That I can, and thanks for tipping the scales in my favour. But as for the extra helping? Well, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch if I were you. Expansion in store for FOR SAVINGS Wychwood library Limited Time Offer

Branch to grow to 15,000 square feet from current 6,381, with updated and upgraded facilities JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com The Wychwood Branch of Toronto Public Library is gearing up for an expansion that could see it more than double its square footage and add programs and features. The proposed plan calls for the library to grow to 15,000 square feet from its current 6,381, with updated and upgraded facilities. “We’re looking to add additional programming space, expand our children’s space, have better zoned areas for children and adults and have additional programming rooms,” said Susan Martin, the TPL’s divisional support manager for branch capital projects. An upgraded technology space is expected to complement the library’s more traditional offerings, though Martin said it’s still too early to determine what that will entail. “We’re not going to expand hugely if we’re not going to add a computer learning centre,” she noted. “We still need to figure out what kind of programming we’ll have

there, but one of the things we’re doing at the library (in general) is to introduce technology and give the members of the public exposure to it.” The plans could include a 3D printer, a popular addition to the Toronto Reference Library and a branch in Scarborough. Overall, Toronto Public Librar y has earmarked $7.684 million for the library redesign through its capital budget. Apart from financial concerns, the redesign will face challenges due to its historic status. “Certainly, the library itself is a heritage building,” said councillor Joe Mihevc, in whose ward the Wychwood library stands. “Its front was constructed in 1916, so next year will be its 100th. It’s one of four libraries in Toronto that were built by the Carnegie Foundation to support literacy back then.” Mihevc said the redesign could allow for anything from a space for seniors to an innovative space for youth, both of which he said are needed in the community. able shelving units could also open up the space for public events. “This will be a real cornerstone of the community,” Mihevc said. Provided the planning process goes smoothly, work on the new library could start as soon as next spring with an eye to completion in 2017, though Martin noted the plan is still in its early stages. “The plan is to have a completed design in the next six to nine months,” she said. “We’re hoping to be in construction by this time next year, but there are a lot of steps to go through before then.” Those steps include community consultation. A public open house took place July 28, with another one to be organized at Wychwood Barns in September.

The past few weeks of extreme heat coupled with lack of rain is putting urban trees at risk, say urban forest advocates at LEAF (Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests). And so, LEAF is calling on residents to help the trees along streets, in parks and in their own yards by giving them a much needed drink of water. “Urban trees offer great benefits during the hot summer months, reducing the need for air conditioning and lessening the strain on our electric grid. Unfortunately, during hot dry periods of summer, they are much more vulnerable than they appear,” Janet McKay, executive director of LEAF, said in a statement. “Often by the time the effects of drought become noticeable, it’s too late.” Toronto’s urban trees act as natural cooling systems, providing shade and reducing temperatures of the surrounding air. Large trees can

discharge up to 375 litres of water per day drawing water molecules up through their roots and releasing them out through each leaf surface. Without an adequate supply of water, this process, called evapotranspiration, cannot take place. Leaves may begin to droop or wither, and trees may even begin to drop as the tree tries to conserve water.

“We desperately need our urban trees to help cool our cities and clean our air. Right now they are struggling to do that because of lack of water. They can’t come in out of the heat like we can. They have to stand there and bake in the sun,” McKay said. “The least we can do is give them a much needed drink.” McKay suggests watering trees in the early morning or evening. Ensure water does not run off onto driveways, sidewalks or streets where it will be wasted. Street trees are particularly vulnerable where they’re surrounded by paved surfaces. Small or young trees should be given three to four buckets of water every other day. More mature trees should be watered with a soaker-hose or regular garden hose. Water should flow slowly from the hose for up to an hour once or twice a week.

30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test

During this Limited-Time event, we are looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. Police program can be a transformative experience for its youth participants >>>from page 1 within Toronto’s 17 police divisions, 48 support units and external agencies. Along with assisting officers with daily tasks on the road and in the office, the students, referred to as “YIPIs,” gain practical experience writing for TPS newsletters, assisting the IT department with installations, and handing out crime prevention flyers. Youth are also privy to firstaid training and help managing their personal finances. Program co-ordinator Melva Radway said the initiative exposes youth to real work environments and educational assignments. She said it benefits young people interested in any field, not solely policing. “Fo r s o m e o f t h e m , this is their fist time being

employed,” she said. “They are learning new skills and how to interact with people.” Radway said the revolving door of new people and experiences often leads to personal transformations within the YIPIs over the summer. “We have some shy kids who start with us and by the end you’re wondering ‘Okay, is this the same person?’” she said. During training, YIPIs gain a solid understanding of the rank structure and the inner workings of the service by touring the TPS Emergency Task Force, K-9, forensics, homicide, marine and mounted units, as well as the Toronto South Detention Centre. Pa r k d a l e’s Au s b o u re Ollivierre applied to the

program after seeing how it benefitted his older brother. He hopes to pursue a career as an auto-engineer and said working with his local division is enhancing his skill set. “It’s interesting to work in 11 Division because it’s relatively new,” he said. “There are a lot of friendly officers that love YIPIs, and I can gain a lot of knowledge from them.” During the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival kickoff at TPS headquarters on Friday, Toronto Mayor John Tory applauded the YIPI program. “It lays down roots on both sides, which are important in forming relationships to ensure a safe community.”

Why choose a Realtor? A Realtor can help you reach the perfect buyer

You’re ready to dive into the real estate market. Now what? To start getting the word out, you need to know your target audience. Who will buy your home and how much will they spend? What are the most appealing features? Where will your buyer be searching when they find your posting? Realtors have the resources to figure this out. They know your area’s demographics and can market to potential buyers accordingly. Realtors can advertise your house online and in newspapers, just as you can. They, however, have access to real estate publications and contacts throughout the business. They’ve been networking longer and know where to go to close the deal. When creating advertisements, Realtors also know key words and phrases that buyers will be searching for. They can write a polished posting that will draw in more viewers. On top of publications, Realtors offer a professional “for sale” sign that will get your home noticed. Not only are the signs often well designed, they also showcase recognizable real estate logos, names and faces. Remember, your Realtor markets him or herself regularly in the community. This adds to the marketing specifically for your home. When buyers search for homes on social me-

dia, it’s likely they will go straight for the Realtor and large real estate company pages. All the hashtags in the world may not get you as many views as a post on a local Realtor’s Facebook page or Twitter feed. You may also be included in a regular newsletter or website posting. These outlets can help you reach buyers who would have never seen your house otherwise. When selling, don’t forget that buyers want to see the home before giving up a hefty deposit. This is where an open house comes in. Realtors are experienced and know what will sell a home. You can bake cookies and tidy up, but a Realtor will make sure your home is your best marketing tool, down to the finishing touches. If you’re looking to buy, visit a Realtor to see postings that may not be available to you at home. Realtors have access to a multiple listing service (MLS), which requires them to login. MLS systems are updated regularly and allow Realtors to search through postings to meet a buyer’s specific needs. MLS systems can also help Realtors determine how to market a seller’s house at a fair listing price. Deciding to sell is the easy part. Sit back and trust a professional Realtor to market your home properly for the best results.

BLOOR WEST in brief

LGBTQ filmmakers featured in arts fest The Toronto Queer arts and Culture Festival won’t be hosting a one-day arts festival in 2015. Instead it is expanding its annual film festival from an evening screening to a three day event. Each year the organization receives hundreds of entries that it has to refuse because of time constraints. Expanding the event will allow more time to showcase the very best of emerging LGBTQ filmmakers both locally and internationally. The seventh annual Toronto Queer West Film Festival takes place Aug. 7 to 9 at the Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave. For further details, visit www. queerwest.org/queerwestfilmfest.php

News that the environmental assessment for a proposed rail bridge eliminating Metrolinx’s Davenport Diamond has been pushed back to the fall did little to quell residents’ concerns at a meeting last Wednesday. Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca made the announcement at a transit town hall hosted by Davenport MPP Cristina Martins at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre July 29. “Information will be forthcoming,” Del Duca said, attempting to reassure his capacity audience. “It will be very detailed, to provide a better understanding. You’ll be able to provide feedback through the entire process.” While he encouraged community members to participate in the process, Del Duca admitted that when building transit, there is no way to do so without causing disruption. The Ontario transit agency plans to remove the Davenport rail crossing and proposes building an estimated 8.5-metre high bridge over it so that CP freight trains won’t interfere with GO trains on the Barrie corridor. The bridge would be built from Bloor Street West in the south to just north of Davenport Road. “Why Metrolinx wants to build a one-and-a-half kilometre bridge that’s three storeys high through a residential neighbourhood – it doesn’t make sense,” said Sam Barbieri, a member of the group Options For

Davenport. He was one of a long line of people who stood waiting at the microphones to ask questions of the minister. “We have no idea what this monstrosity will look like. Why is this project being rammed down our throats? The community deserves respect. We don’t want lip service,” Barbieri said to thunderous applause. “I don’t want to look at this bridge for another 30 to 40 years. I think you should go back to the drawing board.” Barbieri suggested the “super bridge” be put on hold for 10 years so that it could be built properly and electrified. A decade is the time frame in which the minister said his government has committed to electrifying the Union-

Rally held TTCriders, ‘a voice for transit riders,’ attended the transit town hall calling on the province and Metrolinx for low fares, clean trains and more stops. A brochure distributed at the meeting asked, “Why is the (Premier Kathleen) Wynne Government and transit agency, Metrolinx, turning (a) new Union Station to Pearson Airport train into a service for the one per cent? The 23-kilometre long line has just two stops between the terminals and it costs up to $27.50 to take the train one way.” The UPX should be a public train, affordable and clean for all, says the group. “It’s a premier service that’s underutilized,” Myles Stocker, a TTCriders member, said.

Pearson Express (UPX). Initially, however, the UPX was supposed to go electric by 2017. That’s what was announced while the express rail to the airport was under construction. Why then, has that time line changed? Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash, who attended the meeting with colleague MPP for Parkdale-High Park Cheri DiNovo, wanted to know. “People are concerned about the health impact,” she told the minister. Del Duca reiterated his government’s 10-year plan, adding that existing locomotives are Tier 4 and emit 80 to 90 per cent less toxins. Nash also inquired about the low ridership numbers on the UPX and its high fares. “I read all the social media. I am aware of what people are feeling,” Del Duca said. “We launched the Union Pearson Express June 6. We’ll continue to monitor the ridership,” he said, adding that seven weeks was not enough time to make any drastic decisions. Davenport has been loyal to the Liberals for more than 30 years, pointed out local resident Donna Cowan. “What has that loyalty got us? The UPX – with no benefit to our neighbourhood. The GO Barrie line is no benefit to our community. It does not service us at all,” she said. “The west end is a transit desert. It takes two buses and two subway changes to get downtown. I want electrification. I want service to our community as a relief line to downtown.” The Dufferin bus transports more people in a day than the Barrie line, Cowan said. Del Duca said he respects where the community is coming from, that he could hear the frustration. “We do have to take a look at a number of issues to open up the Barrie corridor.”
