Keele Street school turning 100, starts work on new wing Construction to be complete in 2015 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As Keele Street Junior Public School gets set to celebrate its centennial anniversary in September, construction was slated to begin on a three-storey ‘senior wing’ addition. The 11-room addition, comprised of science and technology and visual art classrooms and a state-of-the-art music room as well as lockers, will be connected to the original building by a glass atrium, said Principal Jennie Petko recently. X-Men of Toronto support charity while assuming favourite superhero personas Jason Loo and Allison O’Toole masquerade as Multiple Man and Scarlet Witch LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Don’t be alarmed if you spot a superhero in your midst. The city has its own band of costumed crusaders with superhuman powers, dedicated to protecting the public. The X-Men of Toronto is a group of cosplayers, a hobby where participants wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea identified with a name. Their mission, they say, is to be positive role models while raising funds for various charitable organizations across the province. This year, X-Men of Toronto has made appearances at both Toronto ComiCon as well as Oshawa Comic Con raising money for The War Amps – an organization committed to improving the lives of amputees – through the proceeds of their raffle game and sale of team merchandise. Last month, they appeared at St. Joseph’s Catholic School’s Fun Fair in the Leslie Street and Dundas Street East area. Their human alter egos, Wolverine, Multiple Man,

The X-Men of Toronto, including Wolverine, left, Multiple Man, Scarlet Witch, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Psylocke and Storm, as well as absent Havok and Deadpool, is a charity-related group of cosplayers, which aims to give back to the community while being role models of good citizenship.

Scarlet Witch, Nightcrawler, Mystique, Psylocke, Storm, Havok and Deadpool, hail from Toronto and across the GTA and two – Multiple Man and Scarlet Witch, AKA Jason Loo and Allison O’Toole – live in the Swansea and High Park areas. They met originally in line at a comic convention. “I wanted to find some way to legitimize my reason for dressing up,” said O’Toole when asked what attracted her to the X-Men of Toronto. No t o n l y d o e s e a c h member share a passion for comics, said O’Toole and Loo,

but they love dressing up for the good of mankind. “I love the community outreach,” O’Toole said. Added Loo, “I enjoy the community of people we come across. We’re all out there because we love it. We have a good time.” original look Their costumes are based on the original Marvel comic book characters. “My costume was designed in the ’60s,” O’Toole said. “My character is really super-

hero-ish because of her red cape.” O’Toole said she delights in the reaction she gets, particularly from little girls. O’Toole recalled one little girl who was so enamoured with her cape that her mom asked if her daughter could have a picture taken with Scarlet Witch. “She knew I was a female superhero,” O’Toole said. Kids, said Loo, “just like to hang out with superheroes.” O’Toole is drawn to her character, she said, because of Scarlet Witch’s family

dynamic. Despite having magic powers – she can jinx people – Scarlet Witch gets beaten down repeatedly only to triumph. “She’s so caring, powerful,” O’Toole said. Loo said he can relate to Multiple Man’s ability to make duplicates of himself. “Both of us grew up as an only child,” he said. “I became a great multitasker. I’m more comfortable on my own.”

e’d like to hear about the best practices of your local Neighbourhood Watch. It’s because we think the best ideas are often old ones, and where the safety of a community is concerned, neighbours watching out for each other is about as effective as you can get. An organized, sustained program like Neighbourhood Watch takes it a step further, and is a program that should be maximized on our streets and across the city. Residents almost always support one another in time of crisis, or in the face of tragedy. We’ve seen that locally many times – just last week in Leslieville, after the two-alarm fire on Minto Street that had residents checking in on one another and offering assistance to police. In south Etobicoke, the rash of summer breakins and assaults have people up in arms - watching out over each other’s houses and noting any suspicious activity to police. That collaboration is inspiring our view to see, but it’s almost too bad it happens only after a crime or tragBe proactive in edy has already taken place. We need to be proactive if we effort to keep want to have any lasting effect on safety of our communities. community safe theNeighbourhood Watch can help us do that. Created in the 1980s by the Crime Prevention Association of Toronto (CPAT), it empowers neighbourhoods, businesses, and individuals to take action to reduce crime. Though the familiar signs are up all over the city, indicating the existence of a Neighbourhood Watch Group, we’re curious to know how many are actually still active? We’re willing to bet far less than the number of signs still up. The success of the program is entirely dependent on the people of the neighbourhood. Even CPAT acknowledges on its website that programs go dormant when people move on, or they feel the particular reason for starting one in the first place has been solved, or the community once again feels safe. We shouldn’t take that sense of security for granted. We’d like to find out how many Neighbourhood Watch Programs are active in Toronto. What’s the experience been, for those involved? Do groups share information, advice - or do they even know other groups exist? We’d like to investigate the possibility for growth and collaboration on a broader scale. The potential to deter crime is in our hands, but it’s only effective when residents work together towards that goal. If you belong to a Neighbourhood Watch Group, contact us at press@insidetoronto.com to let us know.

column

Election candidates with no name recognition still have plenty to say M ayoral candidates – at least some of them – get a lot of attention in Toronto municipal elections, and rightly so: the choice Torontonians make for mayor sets the future direction of the city more than any single vote. But there are 44 other elections taking place – and some of those elections are more important than others. In 2010, the Ford administration wouldn’t be what it became if Doug Ford hadn’t stepped in to hold onto the Ward 2 Etobicoke North seat after Rob Ford left it, to take the mayoralty. Like too many other wards with well-known incumbents, Ward 2 has become a stronghold... not for an individual – but a family, the Ford family which has held it for 14 years. And Doug is so confi-

david nickle the city

dent in its strength that he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even do interviews to take on the job. The brand in Rexdale is that strong. Actually, it may not be that strong. The Ford brothers have done much to dismantle their city-wide brand, and more to the point – motivate some fairly sophisticated opposition both city wide and more importantly in the ward. That is where Andray Domise comes into the picture. A financial advisor and writer who spent his childhood in Rexdale, but still lives in Etobicoke, the 33-year-old AfricanCanadian has been offering up a pointed critique

of the Ford brand in terms of its bedrock support in north Etobicoke and among African-Canadian young people. He took on the idea of a Ford stronghold directly in a conversation that took place just prior to Michael Ford registering. “The whole thing has to do with anger and resentment,” he said. “A lot of support comes from people who feel disconnected and cut off from Toronto’s political establishment. You can see, looking around Etobicoke neighbourhoods, why people get the impression that nobody cares – all they have is half-finished projects and empty promises. If you can’t rely on people who represent you to get the job done, you’re going to end up rallying around somebody who is going to capture all that anger and resentment and passion.”

Domise doesn’t hide his own anger, but he is betting that the residents of Ward 2 will eventually let go of that anger and resentment after being allowed to be more directly involved in deciding the shape of their community. Domise is also, of course, just a candidate right now – one of 13 running in Ward 2, and one of 12 without the advantage of name recognition, and by no means established to be the best choice among them. So his plans to turn Ward 2 from stronghold to freehold might be premature. But he is running a campaign that at least indicates a sense of the stakes on Oct. 27, both for city and for community.

Work should tie into cafe’s space theme: co-ordinator >>>from page 1 ence.” Since its inception about two years ago, Story Planet has been encouraging young people to create and tell their stories by “igniting their imagination, fuelling their knowledge and equipping them with the tools they need to launch their voice.” Story Planet works with kids and teens, ages six to 18, who often don’t have access to creative writing and art

programs. Through grants and fundraising, Story Planet is able to offer its workshops for free. Likely, many have learned of Story Planet through visiting its social enterprise, the Intergalactic Travel Authority (ITA). It’s where children can get their boarding passes – and adults a cup of ‘Black Hole Brew’ before blasting off to a galaxy – a place where epic adventures, fantasy and fairy tales come to life, coaxed from

young people’s imaginations with help from professional authors and illustrators. A “space departure lounge,” the ITA is a place where interplanetary souvenirs can be found. Designed by the Brothers Dressler, the cafe and retail space serves as a way to connect with the local community. Staff is on a mission to find volunteers who can tie the workshop space in with the

Intergalactic Travel Authority, said Renda. Story Planet offers two types of programming: Inner Space and Outer Space, workshops at the writing centre and workshops in classrooms across Toronto at the request of a teacher or school. Volunteering is key to the success of Story Planet, located at 1165 Bloor St. W. If you would like to help, visit storyplanet.ca or contact 416-645-1049.

Report unruly plants If vegetation has grown over a traffic light or stop sign, the City of Toronto wants you to call its 311 service to report it. ‘We are asking residents to act as our eyes on the street to help us identify and address situations that are potentially unsafe for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers,” Denzil Minnan-Wong, the city’s public works and infrastructure chairperson, said

in a recent release. It’s particularly helpful when residents give the exact location where plants need to be cleared, such as, “eastbound on St. Clair Avenue approaching Mount Pleasant Road,” the city said. Pro p e r t y ow n e r s a re also being reminded to prune trees and shrubs so they don’t block any part of Toronto roads or sidewalks.

Streetcars return to Queens Quay

OPENS

TTC streetcar service will finally return to Harbourfront in October. Over the last two years, the 509 Harbourfront route running between Union Station and the Exhibition Loop has used replacement buses while the existing streetcar corridor along Queens Quay was relocated and completely rebuilt. The 509 streetcar was supposed to have returned to service last summer, but the schedule was pushed back to July of this year, and then to the end of August. The TTC blames the delay on issues with water and sewer main replacements Waterfront Toronto was to have completed before the corridor rebuild could commence. Waterfront, in turn, said the harsh winter delayed its construction schedule.

The new three-year pact will see Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) continue to create public murals depicting social themes and messages on old TTC advertising panels. Got an itch to delve through data on city cycling and a weekend to spare? The Bike Share Toronto Hackathon and Design Jam may just be for you. From Aug. 15 to 17, wouldbe hackers and planner types will converge upon Bitmaker Labs to play with open data sets provided by the City of Toronto and Bike Share Toronto – which took over

Bixi’s operations earlier this year. With a weekend’s worth of tech-talks, design workshops and other events planned, organizers hope the work will culminate in new mobile apps, maps, and other ways to present information on city cycling habits. Cost $30. For more information visit www.bikesharetoronto.com . BAY subway STATION GOES WIRELESS The TTC has expanded wireless internet access to one more subway station. Bay Station now joins Bloor-Yonge and St. George as the only stations providing free Wi-Fi access. The ad-supported service, which can be accessed through a mobile device while standing on the subway platform, is part of a pilot project the TTC hopes to eventually extend to the entire subway system.

Anniversary to feature a ‘trip back in time’ >>>from page 1 School had an enrollment of 200 students; classes went up to Grade 4. Originally a three-storey building, according to historical records, the school boasted 22 rooms, including a dental clinic. Its main door was at 96 Keele St. and a bridge spanned part of the play yard to provide access to the building from Mountview Avenue. In 1938, the Keele Street Public School Home and School Association – now known as family council – was founded. Throughout the years, the association would organize graduation banquets, the war effort, student awards and lead fundraising. Between 1939 and ’45, Keele staff, students and their families raised money to purchase mobile kitchens for use by British war workers. As many as 187 graduates served in the Second World War. In 1957, Keele became a junior school with classes up to Grade 6. Almost 20 years later, construction began on the existing building. In 1978, ‘Keele Street Public School – Junior and City Community Centre’ officially opened. The old building was demolished.

Keele Street Public School is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary with a special ceremony Sept. 27. Pictured here is the original building, which opened on Sept. 1, 1914.

Nicholas Patsiopoulous, whose children now attend Keele, was a Grade 5 student in the brand new Keele Public School and with his classmates witnessed the old building come down. “The work had been going on for some weeks, but on one particular day all the kids in my class rushed to the windows. For the first, and to date only, time in my life I saw a wrecking ball in action. The crane was swinging the heavy sphere,

which methodically tore through the exterior walls of the old school,” he recalled. “My teacher, Mr. Proctor, must have recognized that trying to wrestle a group of excited pre-teens away from the spectacle at hand and back into their seats would have been fruitless, and he wisely let the kids enjoy the show for a half hour.” As “cool” as it was to see the demolition, Patsiopoulous said he can remember feeling a twinge of

sadness. “There had been something historic, stately even, about that creaky old building in which I had made friends, played in the yard and started making my first independent memories. Months before the demolition started there had been an open house and past Keele students, some whom had been pupils back in the 1920s, came in to see their alma mater and sign their names on the walls,” he said. “Clearly I hadn’t been the only one whose life was touched by that old building between Mountview and Bloor.” A celebratory anniversary event will take place Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As part of the festivities, classrooms will be decorated in different eras offering visitors a trip back in time, said Petko. There will be photographs depicting the school’s past, present and future, she said. Local politicians and dignitaries will take part in the day. Everyone is invited, including alumni.

Ontario Place’s urban park, waterfront trail to be open in 2016 HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The public will have to wait a little while longer to enjoy Ontario Place. Michael Coteau, minister of tourism, culture and sport for Ontario, announced Thursday, July 31 the first phase of Ontario Place revitalization will open in the fall of 2016 with a new urban park and waterfront trail for the public. “We’re pretty excited about that park, it will be a place where people can walk in... it will be an extraordinary place for people to come and spend time with their families,” Coteau said. The announcement is part of the province’s $100-million investment to reboot the popular tourist destination. “The revitalized core of Ontario Place will bring inspiration and interaction to the heart of the islands through a new hub through discovery and innovation,” Coteau said. The province did not provide a definite timeline for when the entire site will be complete, however, in a

events; a blue park, which could include space for water sports; a public recreational space; and an improved pedestrian bridge extending across Lake Shore Boulevard that links to Exhibition Place. “The vision for your new Ontario Place imagines a mix of urban, natural parks, cultural and community amenities set within the landscape across the islands,” he said. “A lot will change, but a lot will remain the same.” Beautiful waterfront

Michael Coteau, the provincial minister of tourism, culture and sport, announced July 31 the first phase of Ontario Place revitalization will open in the fall of 2016 with a new urban park and waterfront trail for the public.

press release, it did state the next stages of work after the first phase include “an environmental assessment, a land-use planning process, soil remediation and further consultations with Ontarians.”

The features proposed for the future of Ontario Place include a canal district that resembles a waterfront promenade with restaurants and shops; an area for cultural activities, festivals and community

As a part of the revitalization proposal, the original Cinesphere and pods will remain and be used as a research, learning and cultural activity hub. Coteau said they plan to continue its partnership with live music performances at the Molson Canadian Ampitheatre and is exploring the idea of a new year-round performance venue. “It’s a combination of entertainment, learning and really enjoying the beautiful waterfront we have here in Ontario, in Toronto that we really need to take advantage

of more,” Coteau said. Ontario Place closed its gates two years ago after 41 seasons. The closure took place because the government couldn’t afford to keep it open with a steady decline in attendance. Rumours swirled that a casino or condominiums would be put up in the wake of its closure with 28 hectares of land for developers to work with, but Coteau reaffirmed a residential development is not part of the revitalization project. And the idea of a casino has long been ruled out. He added Ontario is open to working with the private sector, individual donors, corporate sponsors and investors with a strong interest in contributing and adding value and vibrancy to Toronto’s waterfront. “It’s important for us to get the site to a place where it can be developed where corporate Ontario looks at it as a desirable place,” Coteau said. “The economic potential is quite incredible.”
