told The Villager. What he discovered was what he described as thousands of dead fish floating in the pond. The City of Toronto has been

Aussie Rules football player needs votes to reach Cup Contest will help send Corso Italia resident to tourney down under LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Corso Italia-area resident Renée Tong has a dream. The 23-year-old aspires to represent Canada in the 2014 International Cup, a tournament for Australian Rules Football, a relatively unknown sport outside of Australia,

which she’s been playing since 2009. But Tong needs your help. Currently on the women’s 2013 team, Tong has her sights set on qualifying for the team next year when Canada returns Down Under to attempt to better its second-place finish. In May, she stumbled upon a contest on Facebook, presented by the natural health supplements corporation called Genuine Health. Sharing her story in an online essay, she is hoping to garner enough votes to win the $10,000 prize and ‘fuel her athletic dream.’ “Last time I checked, I was in third place,” Tong told The Villager at a St. Clair Avenue coffee shop recently. Contest participants have until

the end of August to solicit votes. One of Tong’s friends has gone so far as to set an alarm so she won’t forget to cast her vote every day. The University of Western Ontario Kinesiology graduate was first introduced to “Aussie Rules” football in high school. She didn’t think much of it at the time, being a fan of individual sports such as swimming and running. A few years later, Tong was looking for a new activity to try and came across an ad on Craigslist, posted by the Central Blues Australian Football Club, which practices on the University of Toronto campus and Cherry Beach athletic fields with games every Saturday. In its seven years, the club has become known as one of the most social and welcoming clubs while remaining an extremely competitive part of the Ontario Australian Football League. The women’s team is comprised of all ages, including one player as young as 15, from across the GTA and beyond, Tong said. In August, Tong will join the team to play against the U.S. in Edmonton. It’ll be during that game that women will be chosen for the international team based on sportsmanship, fitness and skill. Players are responsible for the cost of the Australian trip, including air fare, hotel, club feels and physio, Tong said. The cost is about $4,000. “In Canada, it’s still a growing sport,” Tong said. “There are still a lot of firsts and opportunities.” Aussie Rules Football is similar to rugby, Tong said. It’s a fast-moving game with no off-side. To keep herself in top form, Tong runs regularly and hits the gym in addition to club practices and games. t’s a city tradition, rooted in agricultural beginnings, and it’s just around the corner. Starting Aug. 16 and running through Sept. 2, the annual Canadian National Exhibition takes over the lakefront at Exhibition Place. An annual event, it’s one that typically marks the end of the summer. Hard to believe it’s almost that time of year again. As issues of sustainability gain an increasing foothold in the public consciousness, it’s important largescale events – including ones like the Ex that generate $60 million in economic activity for Toronto – take a leadership role to reflect this change. The Ex proudly boasts the title of “greenest fair in North America.” According to event organizers, for the past our view three consecutive fairs, the CNE been awarded Eco Logo Many options has certification – the first largeoffered to help scale event in North America to achieve this designation. you go green Much has changed since the fair began in 1879. Today its agricultural elements – which this year includes interactive features such as magic show Agri-Magic and farm tour AgVenture – are part of a much larger array of offerings. But while the range of features to the nearly 1.4 million expected to attend the fair has increased, its agricultural roots remain. But in the city, it’s not just events like the Ex where one can experience agriculture. Here in Toronto, it’s heartening to see a number of positive sustainability initiatives emerge around urban farming. There’s the Toronto Urban Farm, located at Jane Street and Steeles Avenue at Black Creek Pioneer Village, which opened last year. It’s a partnership between the city and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority that teaches youth and the community about urban organic farming. There’s the residential fruit-picking program Not Far From the Tree, which partners volunteer pickers with property owners who have trees ready for harvest. The yield is split between the property owner, the volunteers and a local social service agency. Tips on how to start a community garden are available on the city website. On a small scale, there are plenty of ways to improve your community through sustainability. Whether it’s by joining a local community organization in your neighbourhood or lending your time and expertise to a community garden, the opportunities are there.

Ford’s influence on provincial byelections debatable

M

uch has been made of Mayor Rob Ford’s deliberate and enthusiastic involvement in the two provincial byelections that recently took place in the city. Over the course of the campaign, Ford stumped and shouted, alleged corruption, berated, paraded and, of course, endorsed two candidates from the party of his late father. He put as much energy into the enterprise as one might expect a mayor to put into mayoral duties: so much so that he caught the disapproving eye of the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Glen Murray and raised the ire of Ford’s executive-committee ally Peter Milczyn – both of whom were trying, without success, to plant a Liberal flag in the riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore. Mayor Ford might take some of the credit for preventing that, and decisively helping his Deputy Mayor, Doug Holyday, deliver the first Toronto

david nickle the city Progressive Conservative seat in a decade. The claim would be more credible, of course, if he’d been able to do the same for the PCs in Scarborough-Guildwood. It might be more reasonable to say that Holyday was in an excellent position to do so, all on his own. The long-serving municipal politician has had good years and bad over the course of his career — sometimes better known for utterly losing his temper on the floor of council, and sometimes, as these past few years, for bringing genial calm to a tumultuous field. While Holyday has never been anything but partisan, he’s proved essential to the Ford administration, delivering in negotiations with unionized workers what could be some of the most lasting changes to the way the city does business.

When Ford was dealing with what seems will be only the first part of his alleged crack video scandal, Holyday was a supportive second-incommand. He was also an appropriate scold, joining much of the public in urging the mayor to address the allegations against him head on. That Holyday would win in a riding that had been confidently Liberal for a decade isn’t surprising. That Ford’s candidate should lose in a riding to the east of there, in spite of everything... well, if a mayor’s word means anything in influencing a vote, that is a bit of a surprise. Ford and his family have been a-courting in Scarborough since the 2010 municipal election. Ford promised and could well be on the cusp of delivering a subway there. Scarborough folk were lined up through the trees at his first-ever Scarborough FordFest party. Personally, he polls

well there too. Yet he could not transfer that combination of elbow grease and pixie dust to influence a provincial vote. It might be that the office itself doesn’t hold much influence. When Ford’s predecessor David Miller waded into federal elections in a less partisan way, he tended to pick candidates in individual races that had a decent chance of winning. Mel Lastman, a savvy political operative from way back, knew enough to stay out completely. It might well serve as a sobering lesson to the Fords, who obviously enjoy campaigning and do seem to have a knack for it: regardless of how much fun it is out on the hustings for some other level of government, their energies might best be applied to dancing with the ones that brought them, and doing the job they were elected to do.

Life of Jude set to debut at the SummerWorks festival Aug. 8

Youth art shown in Toronto subway stops

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

At-risk youth from across Toronto have been given a unique opportunity to beautify the city’s subway stops thanks to a partnership between Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) and Pattison Onestop. The pilot project, called Art Responsibly, will see the youths’ art replacing traditional advertising posters in a number of TTC subway stops. The initiative came when young AFCY participant Fitzroy Facey raised issues about being responsible when it comes to painting graffiti and other forms of art in the city. “The subway posters were given to us and the young artists erased them and painted over them to express their thoughts on what it means to be responsible by being artful,” said AFCY executive director Julie Frost. The posters tackle issues such as inclusivity, embrac-

Bloor West Village-based playwright-actor Alex PochGoldin’s play, Life of Jude, debuting at SummerWorks Theatre Festival, has been 11 years in the making – and he’s still editing within days of its release. Life of Jude is set in the mountain town of “Hope” and tells the story of a boy, who becomes educated in the church and is very rigid in his beliefs. The production introduces audiences to the boy at the age of six and follows him as he gets older and enters the seminary and becomes a priest, said PochGoldin during a conversation at a neighbourhood coffee shop recently. “It explores themes of injustice, the idea of religious intolerance and our questions of faith,” Poch-Goldin told The Villager. The original two-hour epic story has been edited down to 90 minutes to fit the festival’s guidelines and boasts a cast of 21 actors, including Poch-Goldin’s six-year-old daughter Chloe Babette. The juried festival provides an opportunity to present plays one wouldn’t have the opportunity to during a regular season, said Poch-Goldin of SummerWorks’ appeal. “I’ve done 13 drafts of this play. I’ve wanted to do this before I die. If I die on open-

ing night, that’s OK,” he said with a laugh. A majority of the actors are new graduates of the National Theatre School, who were first introduced to Life of Jude by its director David Ferry during a two-week workshop at the school. One of those actors is Darcy Gerhart, who grew up in Bloor West Village, and joined Poch-Goldin last Wednesday morning. Gerhart said her parents have always been extremely supportive, enrolling her in dance class and encouraging her performing career.

In high school, she applied to the Stratford Shakespeare School. “That’s where things really clicked for me, when I realized there was something meaningful in acting,” said Gerhart, who also attended the Etobicoke School for the Arts in Grade 12. As for Poch-Goldin, “I guess I was dramatic as a kid. My dad threatened to send me to drama school,” he said. “He wasn’t thrilled initially when I took up acting – until I started making a living.” Despite the production’s

heavy subjects – “one of my major intentions for writing it was to hold a mirror up to our post-9-11 society,” said Poch-Goldin – it is actually quite funny and musical. The play, produced by Poch-Goldin’s wife, Kelly Thornton, director of The Penelopiad, and artistic director of Nightwood Theatre, debuts Aug. 8 and continues until Aug. 18 at the Theatre Passe Muraille Mainstage, 16 Ryerson Ave.

Professional muralists and youth leaders led painters from six different program locations across the city, including the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Free After Three program, Covenant House Toronto, Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, St. Barnabas Catholic School, St. Dorothy Catholic School and Rockcliffe Middle School. “One really important feature of this program is the posters (the artists) created were placed in the closest stations to where they were made,” Frost said. “These are the stations these youths use, so they can see their work in public. It fits with the whole notion of empowering youth to be active and constructive social engagers.” The posters will be up in six subway stations – St. Patrick, College, Eglinton West, Kennedy, Wilson and Runnymede – through the end of the year.

Musicians perform pedal-powered concerts for Tune Your Ride Tour LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The first-ever of its kind in Canada, the inaugural pedalpowered ‘Tune Your Ride Tour’ featuring three indie/ folk artists, hits the road Sunday, with a kick-off event in Dufferin Grove Park. The 12-day bike trip boasting a string of pedalpowered outdoor concerts across Eastern Ontario includes stops in Oshawa, Port Hope, Brighton, Picton, Kingston, Gananoque, Smith Falls, Kemptville and Ottawa – cities that are densely populated and not too far away from each other. “Our plan is to ride 60 kilometres a day,” said tour director James Davis, an Ossington Avenue and Bloor Street West-area resident. “We’re figuring on four hours of riding each day. We’ll get up not too early, ride for a few hours and then set up for a show.” The group will ride along

Lake Ontario and be billeted in people’s houses along the way. Davis is no stranger to cycling. It has been his primary mode of transportation since elementary school. He rode downtown Toronto for the first time in 2002. “It’s the easiest way to get around the city. It’s environmentally friendly, healthy. It’s also a lot of fun,” Davis said. “I like to do what I can to promote cycling in a fun and open way.” The musicians won’t be the only ones pedaling – during performances, all electricity

will be generated by audience members using bicycle generators that will power a bespoke P.A. speaker system custom-designed for the annual Bicycle Music Festival, founded by Davis and that takes place Sept. 7. They’ll be riding special cargo bikes with extended frames to accommodate all their gear. The tour features folk musicians and cycling enthusiasts Abigail Lapell, Jessica Moore and Dana Sipos. Davis said he was inspired by the California band Shake Your Peace! a group known for their bicycle-based music tours and whose lead singer Gabe Dominguez co-founded the San Francisco’s Bicycle Music Festival. “I said, ‘Let’s do that, it sounds like fun,’” Davis said.

POLICE

Police warn public of distraction thefts, scams Suspect asks for directions

SO WHY ISN’T YOUR INTERNET?

Eleven Division are alerting residents to some recent thefts in the neighbourhood. In one incident, which officers are calling a “distraction theft,” an older woman was approached at the Dundas West subway station by another woman in a blue, fourdoor vehicle asking for directions to any nearby hospital. According to police, the complainant provided directions, meanwhile the suspect leaned over to give her a “gift,” a cheap quality necklace, which she put around the complainant’s neck. The complainant then realized

her own gold necklace had been removed. She was able to grab her necklace back before the suspect returned to her vehicle and drove away. Police describe the suspect as white, between 30 and 40 years old, five feet, 200 lbs., with a round face and short hair. The driver, a man, is described as being between the ages of 30 and 40 with a round face. They were driving a blue, fourdoor vehicle. Police said several bicycles have been stolen from front porches and unlocked garages lately as well as several pieces of lawn furniture and potted plants from front porches

on Glenlake and Kennedy avenues. Aslo, telephone frauds have been prevalent lately with people posing as representatives from Bell, Home Depot and the FBI, asking for money or banking and personal information. Officers are also asking residents to be aware of what they’re calling the “grandparent scam” in which a suspect calls a complainant, posing as a relative who says they need money to invest in a business.

Davenport residents create look for community in 2030

Visioning process keeps things grassroots LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

A community garden, seed library, tool sharing and clothing swaps were just some of the ideas generated at a couple of public brainstorming sessions hosted by Davenport MPP Jonah Schein to find out how his constituents want their neighbourhood to look in 2030. With help from Transition Toronto, an organization created out of a desire to make the city more resilient to the effects of peak oil, climate change and economic instability, Schein asked his constituents to determine what direction they wanted Davenport to go in 17 years. Schein said his goal is to “bridge the gap” between community engagement and the political system. “My hope is to engage our Davenport community to build a stronger connection between local

work and connect it to the broader political framework,” said the NDP environment critic. The aim was to get people talking. “To determine what we can do as a community and as a province-wide community,” Schein said. “People were very passionate.” The results have been tallied, he reported. Residents made a number of suggestions for immediate steps the neighbourhood could take to lessen our reliance on fossil fuels while fostering community partnerships. They include creating a shared root cellar, organizing collective shopping schedules, supporting carpooling at a local level, starting a free-for-all community store, creating a tool library, sharing resources, hosting community pot luck dinners and teaching each other, for

example, by holding a repair cafe, among others. The aim is to “envision a postcarbon community and if it’s going to be low carbon, how do we make it something we want,” explained Andrew Knox, Transition Toronto founder. “The whole idea is to unhook the collective genius,” he said. There are about 1,500 “Transition towns” in the world, Knox said. He was first introduced to Transition culture while working in the U.K. as a renewable energy consultant. When he returned to Toronto in the fall of 2009, he said he was compelled to create a local chapter. “This is the kind of thing that is more than just talking about what we want. These projects are happening,” said Knox, who helped to host similar brainstorming sessions in Ward 21 (St. Paul’s).

Ceremony held to honour Roma deaths during Second World War ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Aug. 2 is a significant date for the Roma community as it marks the International Day of Remembrance for the Extermination of the Roma during the Second World War, when Nazi Germany and its allies tried to exterminate the Romani people from Europe. Ceremonies and events are held around the world to mark Aug. 2 and 3, 1944, when Nazis killed 2,897 Roma children, women and men in the Birkenau gas chambers. About 1.5 million Roma were killed in the Porrajmos. In Parkdale, a ceremony was held at Friendship Hall in Bonar Parkdale Presbyterian Church. Parkdale is home to the largest Roma community living outside the European continent. The Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to share with nonRoma their experience, said Gina Csanyi-Robah, executive director of the Roma Community Centre, which hosted the event.

“This is an experience that has been left out of historical discourse essentially,” CsanyiRobah said. “I remember going to my Grade 10 history class and covering the Holocaust, but never hearing about Roma or gypsies, if you will, as being victims of the Holocaust.” Csanyi-Robah said she learned about the Roma history related to the Holocaust from her grandmother, whose sister had been a survivor and had been in a camp. “For me it has been a very personal connection through my family, but also as a Romani individual to make sure younger Roma who are growing up know their story,” Csanyi-Robah said. With music, video clips, a short documentary film and survivor stories, the commemoration paid tribute to those who died during the Porrajmos, but also to those who continue to be victims of ongoing racially motivated violence and hate crimes across Europe, Csanyi-Robah said.

Tests on fish being conducted at University of Guelph >>>from page 1 Die-offs can be caused by such environmental events such as storms or extreme heat. The July 26 storm could have impacted the water’s oxygen, said Kowalski, although a cause has yet to be determined. The Ministry of Natural Resources will be sending the dead fish to the lab at the University of Guelph

for study. Results could take weeks, she said. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment is responsible for testing the water quality for such issues as bacteria, illness or pollution. It’s the Ministry of Natural Resources that is the “fish expert,” Kowalski said. The fish cleanup is the responsibility of the landowner, which is in this case

The City of Toronto. Frey said his concerns at this point are avoiding such a disaster in the future, the overall management of the pond and whether improvements are called for and if the rotting fish are a potential health hazard. “The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has been kept in the loop,” Kowalski said.

At right, this was the sight discovered by resident Andrew Freyman at Grenadier Pond recently. City staff and ministry of natural resources are investigating the death of fish at the High Park pond. Resident to push limits at Ironman, Hawaii LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Sixty-year-old Baby Pointarea resident Paul Madonia is headed to Hawaii this fall with his wife, however, only part of their trip will be a vacation. The retired teacher-turned contractor will be competing in the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on Oct. 12. A qualification-only event, Madonia earned a spot by finishing first place in his age category at the Ironman Lake Placid, New York, on Sunday, July 27 in 11 hours and 15 minutes – the fastest time ever in the 60 to 65 age category in Lake Placid. An avid athlete in high school, Madonia was on the football, rugby, soccer and wrestling teams and in uni-

It’s so hot in Hawaii, you just want to survive. – Paul Madonia

versity continued with rugby. Upon graduation, he didn’t want to lose his fitness level so took up running. He’s been running ever since, competing in as many as 30 marathons over the years. Yet, it wasn’t until he turned 46 that he felt he wanted to take on a bigger challenge: the Ironman, a series of long-distance triathlon races consisting of a 3.86 km swim, a 180.2 km bike ride and a marathon 42.2 km run, raced in that order and without a break. “At 46, I thought I’d try an

Ironman and took from when I was 46 ‘til I turned 50 to train,” said Madonia during a conversation on Friday, Aug. 2. Madonia, who has lived in Baby Point with his wife since 1980, was a weak swimmer before becoming an Ironman and trains regularly with the Norseman Masters Aquatic Club in Etobicoke under the tutelage of esteemed long-distance swimmer Kim Lumsdon, whose third attempt at a cross-Lake Ontario swim was thwarted by a storm, resulting in hypothermia, last month. At age 50, Madonia placed third at the Ironman Lake Placid, qualifying him for Kona, Hawaii. That year, he was 14th in his age category. Madonia takes on an Ironman every five years so he is the youngest in his age category

each time. He’ll complete a few marathons over the fives years in between, he said. At 55, he competed in the Ironman Canada in Whistler, B.C., qualifying again for Hawaii, but couldn’t go that year. “It’s so hot in Hawaii, you just want to survive,” he said. “This time, I feel much more relaxed. You don’t want to go out there and kill yourself.” Running, he says, is his strength because he’s been at it so long. Over the past five years, Madonia has really stepped it up on the bike. He likes to train in the Holland Marsh, an agricultural area about 50 kilometres north of Toronto.

Keep your furry friends healthy in summer heat We are experiencing one of the hottest summers on record this year, which has been very hard on many of us, including our furry friends. These very hot and humid conditions can cause our pet’s body temperature to increase dangerously, causing hyperthermia or heatstroke. Heatstroke can occur when dogs and cats are left in hot vehicles with inadequate ventilation, left outdoors without access to shade or exercised in hot weather. Pets that are overweight, have underlying heart or lung disease or are bracycephalic (short nosed - such as Pugs, Bulldogs and Boxers) may have a more difficult in these extreme conditions. It is important to monitor our pets for signs of distress in hot weather. Initial signs may include excessive panting, restlessness or large amounts of drool from the nose or mouth. They can then become unsteady on their feet. Eventually you may notice their gums turning blue or purple or bright red in colour due to lack of oxygen. Severe heat stroke can affect the entire body, causing major organ dysfunction and/or failure. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. If you suspect heat stroke, your pet should be taken to the nearest veterinary clinic as soon as possible. If you think your pet is beginning to

overheat and you are concerned, the first step is to remove your pet from the hot environment by moving to a shaded or cooler environment and directing a fan towards him. You can continue to gradually cool your pet down by placing wet towels over him. If you are still concerned, you should take your pet to the nearest veterinarian immediately. It is important not to attempt to cool your pet too rapidly. Using cold water baths or ice for cooling can cause constriction of local blood vessels, trapping heat in the core of the body. This can make the problem worse. Monitor your pet closely and make sure you have adequate cool water available for your pet to drink, if your pet is alert enough to take interest. Do not force water into your pet’s mouth. Walk your dog at dawn and dusk when it tends to be cooler out, and avoid heavy exercise on these days. Taking a water bottle for your dog to have a drink and cool down while on his walk can also be helpful to prevent overheating and dehydration. If possible, a swim in the lake can be a perfect escape from the heat – for you and your pet alike. Dr. Suzanne Lyons Bloor Animal Hospital 2387 Bloor St W. (416)767-5817

Toronto police launch crackdown on illegal use of ebikes, fines reach $305 Toronto police have launched a month-long crackdown on the illegal use of motorized electronic bicycles, commonly known as ebikes. Police are handing out tickets to ebike users for improperly using infrastructure intended for regular bicycles. City bylaws do allow the vehicles to travel in bike lanes and park trails, but only if the bike’s motor is turned off. The fine for not doing so is $305. The crackdown will last until Saturday, Aug. 31. Renovations of Union Station will be done by 2016; extra subway platform planned

All three levels of government helping to fund the more than $700K renovation RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC opened up its Union Station construction site to members of the media where work is proceeding on an additional subway platform. The $161.5 million project, which began in May 2011, is part of an extensive renovation of Union Station and is expected to open in the summer of 2014 in a partially finished state. Intended to double the station’s existing passenger capacity, the project is one of the most challenging the TTC has ever undertaken due to the pressures of keeping subway service going, said TTC Project Manager Malcolm MacKay. “It’s a technically challenging job in that we’re excavating beside an existing facility and logistically difficult because we’re trying to operate our business of moving people. Our business is not construction and we

have to keep our eye on that,” said MacKay recently. The new south platform will serve the Yonge line and will be partitioned

from the existing platform via a decorative 12-by-eight foot multi-paned glass wall spanning the length of the new subway platform to serve as both a public art showcase and barrier, MacKay said. He said going with the barrier design between subway platforms rather than widening the existing structure would mean less disruption for existing train service at Union and smaller project costs. “If we were to widen and put platforms on each side we would be giving up the existing infrastructure we have in place and doubling the excavation required for the project,” MacKay said. He said the opening of the new platform in 2014, even in an unfinished state, will pave the way for a much-needed renovation of the existing central platform, which has not seen extensive work since Union Station opened as part of the Yonge

line back in 1954. The work is part of an extensive revitalization of Union Station, which has double the daily passenger traffic of Pearson International Airport and is used by major transportation providers such as the TTC, GO Transit and VIA Rail. Other projects under way as part of the $700 million-plus revitalization, which is funded by all three levels of government, include a new glass roof and atrium over the GO Train shed and passenger platforms, a northwest extension of the PATH passenger walkway and a new retail concourse. Delays have forced the scheduled date for all planned station renovations to 2016. Metrolinx is also moving its offices to the station’s newly renovated east wing by September. Councillor Karen Stintz, chair of the TTC, was also on hand for the media tour. She said the work taking

place at Union for the platform construction was a long time coming. “It’s definitely something we needed to do as Canada’s busiest transit hub,” Stintz said. TTC Spokesperson Brad Ross said station closures may be required to complete the construction, but they would be coordinated with the ongoing work to replace the existing Yonge-University-Spadina subway signal network. He said there were no plans to expedite work on the project by closing the station for an extended length of time, similar to the 12-day shutdown of Pape station scheduled for the middle of August. Twenty million subway riders make use of the station every year according to city estimates. The TTC recently opened for use a wider passenger concourse and is in the process of demolishing the old subway station entrance.
