LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bloor West Village resident Jennifer Monteith is grateful every hour of every day for her new heart. Five years ago, Monteith, 60, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Her first inclination that something was wrong came one day on her way home from work. She became increasingly bloated and was having trouble breathing. When she arrived home, Monteith packed a bag for the hospital and called 911. “I had no history of heart trouble. It was a complete surprise,” Monteith said of her diagnosis in an interview with The Villager last week.. “Doctors said it’s possible it could have been caused by a virus or my lifestyle – I’m not sure.” Monteith has worked in the fashion and entertainment industry. It was not unusual for her to eat late and party. “I’m not a big drinker or smoker, but I have indulged. Doctors can’t give me a definitive answer.” Because the left side of Monteith’s heart was damaged, she needed a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which replaces the function of a failing heart. Were it not for the device, she says, “I would have been a goner.” As soon as she received the LVAD, Monteith was put on the transplant list, but would have four false alarms or “dress rehearsals” as she calls them, >>>REGISTERING, page 13

t 89 years old, Shura Eadie could be looking at a second career in media. The Grenadier Retirement Home resident recently won a YouTube contest for her video ‘Cooking With Shura’. At just 2:40 minutes in length, her video garnered more than 680 views and was the winner of the CyberSeniors Corner Contest. The judges, including Erin Davis of 98.1 CHFI Radio and documentary filmmaker Gail Singer, called Eadie’s video, one of 20 submissions, “the most original and creative” and called its star “adorable, sweet, lively, fun and funny.” “What can I say except this is unbelievable. It’s just marvelous,” Eadie said as she accepted a bouquet of flowers and her cash prize. “It’s been a marvelous experience and such lovely people I’ve met.” For the past 10 months, Eadie has been one of about 30 seniors from the Grenadier and Christie Gardens Retirement residences who was paired up with teens

to learn how to use the Internet. Cyber-Seniors was the brainchild of sisters Kascha and Macaulee Cassaday, who created the program as a school project. They were inspired after witnessing their own grandparents’ lives transformed by cyber communi-

cation. Capturing their journey toward Internet savviness is a documentary film crew helmed by Brenda Rusnak. One of the goals of the documentary is to inspire young people to teach someone older, says Rusnak, whose eldest daughter Saffron is directing the

film. “I feel privileged to have met everyone and then to be rewarded,” said Eadie. It’s an experience she said she’ll “treasure forever and ever.” Eadie’s 21-year-old counterpart Max Schellenberg told Eadie: “I owe you an awful lot. You’re the star.” Indeed, in her winning video, Eadie shares with her viewers how she “quite often” has her lunch. She confesses, “My microwave, I’m afraid of so I don’t use it at all.” Instead, to cook her favourite: corn on the cob, she relies on her coffee pot. “Sometimes, I cook hard boiled eggs in here too...” she shares. For a grilled cheese sandwich, Eadie demonstrates how she melts the cheese with a hot iron. “These are some ideas for your university dorm or retirement residence... Bon Appetit,” she says in her video. In fact, it was Eadie’s cooking video that inspired Rusnak and her team to create the Cyber-Seniors Corner Contest. “You all rose to the challenge and this has become a very, very tight competition,” said Rusnak

during the awards ceremony at Christie Gardens on July 31. “I hope you’ll continue to inspire other seniors to use YouTube.” The videos were judged on their content, message, delivery and its social media success, said Master of Ceremonies Libby Znaimer, a journalist and host of the Zoomer Report, a special feature for the baby boom generation on all topics of interest on 96.3 FM. While first place was awarded to Eadie and Schellenberg, second place went to Annette Rapoport, 77, and her partner Kate Babkova, 24, whose video ‘77-Year-Old Annette Still Knows How To Have A Good Time’ garnered over 900 views on YouTube; third place went to Marion Kiddell aka “Rapping Granny Marion”, 93, and partner Hannia Cheng, 16, and their video ‘O.G. (Original Grandma) Teeth.’ “She really has inspired me,” said Cheng of Kiddell. “My grandparents live in Australia so I don’t really know them. Marion is like my grandma. She’s amazing.” To view all 20 videos, visit www. youtube.com/playlist?list=PL10B6 D0A9E6445D32&feature=plcp

Art exhibit raises awareness about mental illness LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The 12th annual juried art exhibition ‘Being Scene,’ produced by Workman Arts for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), promises to be “strong on passion and strong on ideas,” says one of its curators, artist Lisa Walter. Launched Thursday, Aug. 2 with a grand opening reception, the exhibit is being held at the Gladstone Hotel and features 56 works of emerging, intermediate and senior artists. The installation is the work of artists who have lived with mental illness and addiction and presents a cross-cultural portrait of the healing power of art. It boasts a diverse style of work, said Walter, a Dufferin and Bloor

West streets-area resident. “There’s a lot of conceptual ideas. It’s a little darker than in previous years, but strong and exciting,” she said. “I had never been involved in jurying an exhibit – there were two other jurors who are members of the professional arts community. What I found interesting is, it made it clear to me that it has to do with how pieces fit together, how the show looks as a whole has an impact on what pieces you choose.” Walter said she hopes people will come to the exhibit and find something they love. This is her second year as a Workman Arts’ artist in residence and says it means a great deal because it helps her access the arts community – rather than having to work alone in her studio.

“It provides a safe space the arts at a very young where I can explore my age. It’s a sentiment shared by Workman Arts’ founder and Executive Director Lisa Brown. “We have always worked against the myth that because you are an artist with mental illness you must be an amateur. We have challenged and overcome this myth by presenting excellent art by Workman members,” said Brown in a statement. “I congratulate each and every visual artist who has shown and is currently showing in the Being Scene art exhibition.” Founded in 1987, Workman Arts offers artists the opportunity to build on their strengths rather than focusing on their illnesses. ‘Being Scene’ takes place at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W., until Oct. 28.

Canadarm should come to Toronto, Ottawa

Protect yourself against West Nile

To the editor: An iconic piece of Canadian space hardware, the Canadarm from the orbiter Endeavour, has left the Kennedy Space Center and is back home where it will go on display at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) headquarters in St. Hubert, Quebec. Why there? Why not in one of Canada’s two main aerospace museums in Toronto and Ottawa? It worked flawlessly for 90 missions, spending a total of 944 days in space and travelling the equivalent of more than 624 million kilometres. This globally recognized technological marvel deserves national attention in a venue accessible to all Canadians. Roland Kiehne, president CAW Local 112

N

ews from Toronto Public Health that two people in the city have tested positive for probable West Nile virus should serve as a warning for all residents. Now is the time to stop and think about protective measures regarding the disease that is spread by infected mosquitoes. There’s no need for panic; just remember some simple steps we can all take to limit both our personal risk of exposure and that of our neighbours. The best way to protect yourself is to limit exposure. Be especially aware at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Use mosquito repellent, cover up with long sleeves and pants, and wear light coloured clothes in areas where there are mosour view quitoes. Residents can also Take precautions protect their home’s indoors by making sure all holes in to limit exposure window and door screens have been repaired. Also, Toronto Public Health to virus reminds residents that checking properties and limiting areas that mosquitoes can use as breeding grounds helps keep the numbers down. In particular, residents are asked to remove standing water from their properties, especially water that has gathered in plant pots, buckets and other items. On a larger scale, the city is also doing its part by having larvicide put into catch basins in order to help reduce the mosquito population. This year’s hot spring and summer have raised the risk level of West Nile virus in Toronto, and the city’s public health department said the two probable diagnoses last week mark the earliest appearance of the virus in humans since it first arrived in Toronto in 2002. An 80-year-old man, who has been hospitalized, and a 32-year-old woman recovering at home have been found with the probable diagnosis. Public health did not say what part of the city they are from. West Nile virus is a potentially deadly disease originally carried by birds who passed it on to mosquitoes after being bitten. People exposed to the virus can show a number of symptoms including fever, rash, neck pain, confusion, severe headaches and sensitivity to light. In serious cases, it can cause inflammation of the brain. However, the risk of infection is still considered low, according to Toronto Public Health, with less than one per cent of people becoming seriously ill and 80 per cent of people bitten by an infected mosquito do not become ill at all. That should not lead to complacency, though. Working together, we can all limit our exposure to this virus.

Mayor is enjoying a good summer, so far

M

ayor Rob Ford finished off July with what can only be described as a series of bravura performances. It really started mid-July, as the mayor danced on the stage with ebullient young women at the launch of the latest iteration of Caribana. Later in the month, he traded quips with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, as the two movie stars descended upon the Hockey Hall of Fame to promote their new movie. Later that same week, he risked life, limb and dignity ascending a set of monkey bars in the new Underpass Park, bouncing up and down while delighted neighbourhood children chanted “Go Mayor, Go Mayor.” It was goofy. It could have gone all to pieces. The mayor could have fallen and really hurt himself; he could have ripped his trousers; he could, in the style of London Mayor Boris Johnson, have simply gotten stuck. But you know what? If it had all gone to pieces, the mayor would have left

THE CITY

Torontonians with a really joyful reminder of just what it is we expect from a mayor in this town: that being, someone who isn’t afraid to get down in the dirt and be seen having a good time with his constituents. Mel Lastman, Toronto’s first mayor, was all about the goofball moments. His office both at Toronto City Hall and when he was Mayor of North York, at the civic centre, was filled with five-and-dime novelties and practical jokes that he’d pull out to amuse — and sometimes bemuse — visitors. Lastman had his bad moments, certainly — but his good moments were just a joy. For Mayor Ford, there have been too few joyful moments — at least publicly. When things have gotten goofy, Ford has more

often played an uncomfortable straight man who responded with anger and fear rather than good humor to the surprises life in the city tossed his way. There is, of course, no time like the summer to start doing this sort of thing. Ford has had some setbacks legislatively — Toronto Council has for the moment seized the agenda from him in the middle of his term. But council is in recess — there are no meetings until the fall — and there is no one to stop the mayor from actually going out and engaging with his citizenry, in a context beyond dealing with oneon-one grievances. The mayor has focussed on grievance; arguably, it was a sense of grievance with city government that got Ford elected in the first place. And Ford has made no secret of his belief that the biggest problem with his city is the city. In expressing that belief, Ford has made a point of snubbing key sectors of the city: the arts community, the GLBT community, even

the people developing the waterfront; when the Waterfront Park celebrated its groundbreaking earlier in the term, Ford was nowhere to be found. It’s good to see him rethinking his absent-father approach to leadership in this town now. Because at some point, even the sternest dad sits down with his kids and plays. n David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears every Thursday. In January 2010, Monteith, still “battery operated,” tucked in to a post-holiday meal of pork chops, green beans and mashed potatoes. “I sat down and I gave thanks to the Lord for being alive in 2010, for my pork chops and mashed potatoes,” she said. Not long after dinner, the dishes put away and sitting in front of the TV, Monteith heard the phone ring. At first, she ignored the call, but when she could no longer ignore the pressing feeling in her gut, Monteith retrieved the message: “Jennifer... I believe we’ve found your heart.” Stories like Monteith’s puts a face to the 1,500 people in this province currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Greater awareness has led to a modest increase in registrations overall in Ontario, yet new data from the Trillium Gift For Life Network’s Gift of 8 Movement at www.BeADonor.ca indicates that out of 179 communities across the province, Toronto ranks 171st with a registration rate of 13 per cent. In the city’s central west area, in communities like Bloor West Village, the registration rate sits at 21 per cent with just more than 77,000 registered donors. Over the past three months, more than 66,000 Ontarians registered their consent for organ and tissue donation, edging the provincial rate of registration to 22 per cent of the eligible population. Personal donor stories like Monteith’s, said Gavsie, inspire action. Some people think that since they’ve signed their donor card that they’re registered when in fact this might not be the case. Toronto’s new chief planner ready for challenge DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The last time Jennifer Keesmaat drew a City of Toronto paycheque was the late 1990s when she worked as an executive assistant for two city councillors: New Democrat Joe Mihevc, and Progressive Conservative councillor Jane Pitfield. “So I did both sides (of the political spectrum),” she recalls in an interview that took place just hours after the city announced the planning consultant’s return to city hall last Tuesday – where she’ll serve as chief planner for the administration of Mayor Rob Ford. At first glance, it doesn’t seem to be a perfect fit. Keesmaat, a principal in the Dialog consulting group, has publicly advocated for pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods, most notably in a TED talk extolling the virtues of having one’s children walk to school. She supports what she calls “fair pricing” of things like roads and other municipal services, and is an admirer of London’s downtown congestion tax. She is a believer in the value of cycling and public transit infrastructure. Mayor Ford, meanwhile, has opposed road tolls as a tax grab, and

during the 2010 election promised to not only stop the light rail transit plan unfolding in Scarborough, but reduce the number of bike lanes in the city. Some might call the match something of a dichotomy. Not Keesmaat. “I don’t think it has to be a dichotomy,” she says. “I think it’s a really important part of city building – ensuring that people have lots of choices. “What I hear in that story line about cars – this is what I hear, ‘I get around in my car and it’s difficult because there are cyclists in the way.’ From a planning perspective, I say let’s make it easier for everyone to get around. Some people will always drive their cars, and maybe they should drive their cars. But they should have choices. Transportation planning is about adding choices and to take transit, or live in a higher density community and walk, is a choice.” In her capacity as a planning consultant, Keesmaat has worked with municipalities across the country and around the world. Here, she’s worked on initiatives in major cities including Mississauga, Vancouver, London and Halifax and most recently founded the group

Project Walk – promoting better understanding of pedestrian issues through various means. Keesmaat was hired to replace retiring chief planner Gary Wright, and will be taking the city through some fairly dramatic change. The portfolio includes not only landuse planning, but also transportation planning and the city’s central waterfront. “My sense of the task before us is that we need to make some pretty bold decisions, we’re going to take

some risks – we’re going to need to be inventive and embrace new kinds of collaborations.” Keesmaat is not the first chief planner to draw this conclusion. One of her predecessors, Paul Bedford, was a prime advocate for plans to tear down the Gardiner Expressway in the name of opening up the city’s waterfront. During that debate, Keesmaat came with a different point of view. She and her group presented a report that explored the idea of actually leaving the Gardiner up, but re-configuring the public space beneath it to make it friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists, thereby linking the city with its waterfront. Keesmaat insists that report wasn’t contrarian to Bedford’s vision. “Where Paul and I might not agree on the specifics or a specific initiative – I think what Paul and I shared was a preoccupation with creating great spaces and a recognition that creating great places meant investing and adapting infrastructure. In terms of that trajectory, my philosophy is about creating great places where people will thrive – and typically these are places where there is tremendous diversity.” Keesmaat will be dealing with

some specific infrastructure issues right out of the gate. In the fall, council will be taking another look at public transit infrastructure, after having sidestepped the issue in July. Keesmaat will have to weigh in on questions of what additional transit improvements ought to go where; and along with the city manager’s office, how one pays for it. While she hasn’t started the job yet, Keesmaat is a proponent of what she calls “fair pricing” for roads, admiring the effect that road pricing has had on congestion in London, England. She’s also watched with interest as Los Angeles residents voted in a referendum in favour of a special transit tax levy. “They had a referendum and the residents supported a tax, knowing it was dedicated to transit,” she says. “There’s inspiration for us – but to get there you have to have the real conversation first. People need a lot of information, need to understand how things work – what’s currently subsidized and what isn’t. We need to enrich those conversations with real data. Keesmaat will start work with the city Sept. 10.

Should you sell before buying a new home? You want to move. You want to buy a new home. Unfortunately, you are already living in one and aren't sure whether you should sell it before buying, or perhaps purchase one first and let the chips fall where they may. To help with this, take a look at some signs to watch for during the decision making process.

Signs you should buy before selling: • You found your dream home: It happens. We walk into a home and it is everything we've ever wanted and, now, can't live without. If the home is within your budget and it makes sense for you to buy first, snap it up before someone else does. • It's a sellers' market: If there is a high demand for homes, then buying before selling is a wise decision. You get a new home quickly and you can likely unload your old home right away. • You can afford to do it: If having two mortgages is not a huge financial stretch, then this may be a consideration. Before you dive in, do some homework and find out how

quickly homes in your area sell; then visit your financial planner to crunch numbers.

Signs you should sell before buying: • You're not willing to budge on price: If you are not flexible on your asking price, then it may be best to sell before buying a home. When you buy first, there's a good chance that you'll have to bend on your asking price if no one is biting. • You don't mind moving around: If you sell your home first, you can always

add a condition in the contract that allows you to stay in your home until you find a new one, but there's also the option of finding a temporary place until you make the move. • Money is tight: If you are barely making ends meet, then it would likely be difficult to maintain two homes for any period of time. Opting to sell your home first and have a little cushion in the bank before closing another home deal may be best in such a situation. – newscanada.com

Choose your words carefully Study reveals five best and worst words commonly used in real estate listings According to research done by a professor at the University of Guelph, real estate ad phrasing has a strong effect on the sales price and a home's time on market.

Worst Words Here are the worst phrases a seller could use in the sale of their home: • Motivated: While you might expect a word like “motivated” to indicate that the homeowner is willing to negotiate on price, it seems this word has the opposite effect. It makes sense for the seller to focus more on the listing and less on describing themselves personally. • Must sell: Unfortunately, the use of “must sell” implies that the home seller is desperate and that there must be something wrong with the place. This, in turn, leaves the

home for sale on the market for longer than it would otherwise be. This term could convey that there is something wrong with the home or that it was overvalued to begin with. • Good value: Sellers often try to list their homes using the phrase 'good value’, which should be avoided. To a potential buyer, this phrase translates to 'not much to look at but a bargain for the price'.” • Starter home: When a potential home buyer sees the words “starter home” on a listing, they immediately imagine a tiny home made for 1.5 people. It indicates that the property is small and economical for first time home buyers. The pitfall of saying “starter home” would be that you are only appealing to a certain portion of

buyers instead of the whole market. Add the square footage of the home in the listing rather than using those words which have a negative connotation. • Freshly painted You've invested a couple hundred dollars to paint your home and prepare it for sale and you think it looks pretty darn good. If you put the promise of a house as 'freshly painted,' potential homebuyers might wonder if that's the only thing that has recently been revamped.

Best language The research also determined the five most powerful words and phrases to get you started: • Beautiful / gorgeous: According to the study, homes that were called “beautiful” sold, on average, 15 per cent faster. While most home buyers are thrilled to get a bargain, they still put a major emphasis on the condition of a home and its esthetic appeal.

• Move-in condition: This tells a home buyer that your home needs no repairs, changes or moderations; it is perfect and ready to be lived in as soon as you hand over the keys. • Turnkey: The word 'turnkey' is often associated with a home that is in fantastic condition. Another word that also catches the eye is 'immaculate'. Again, keep in mind that if you use this

word, your home must live up to it. • Curb appeal: When a home is listed with the words “curb appeal” many home buyers perk up with anticipation. Words like “landscaping” also did well in the survey because a home that is beautiful inside and outside appeals to the masses. • Gourmet kitchen: There is no doubt that the kitchen is

one of the most important, if not the most important room in a home. So it is no surprise to learn that words like “granite” and “gourmet kitchen” translated into a higher sale price. If your kitchen isn't a gourmet one, do minimal upgrades and use another proven phrase with homeowners like “newly remodeled”. – newscanada.com

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Kathy Tudor and her family have seen a lot of changes over the four-plus decades they have lived in Bloor West Village. Tudor says she loves the village for its friendly, “neighbourly vibe.” Yet, that “certain feel” that came from the once predominantly European community with a retail strip comprised of several “mom and pop” shops has been lost, she says. Due to the recent tough economic times, several stores along Bloor Street West have remained empty. Fortunately, said Tudor, the former Laura Secord at Beresford Avenue and Bloor Street West did not suffer the same fate. “We watched the conversion to Hakim Optical with great interest. It was fairly low key until we saw the monstrous sign go up. Not only does it look too big for the building, it looks downright dangerous for passersby,” said Tudor. “It is totally out of character for

the neighbourhood.” A new city-wide sign bylaw, which went into effect in April of 2010, contains regulations that protect residential and natural areas that are near illuminated signs by restricting the maximum level of a sign, prohibiting signs from spilling light onto adjacent properties and requiring illuminated signs to be shut off between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette weighed in on the issue. “Personally, I don’t like illuminated signs. They’re not bird-friendly or residentfriendly,” said Doucette. “This one does stand out.” Doucette said she will be following the issue “every step of the way.” However, Hakim Optical spokesperson, John Worden, says the sign’s size is consistent with all others in the chain. Hakim Optical has submitted a permit application for the signs on the property, Ted Van Vliet manager of Toronto’s sign bylaw unit said. For an area that’s been

deemed commercial, such as Bloor West Village, city regulations dictate that a sign’s size must be limited to 20 per cent of the first storey wall area or 10 per cent of the second storey wall area, he explained. But Van Vliet wasn’t able to comment specifically on the current size of Hakim Optical’s sign because the application hasn’t been finalized. Despite concern for the sign, Alex Ling, the former chair of the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) and owner of Ling’s Importers, says businesses like Hakim Optical are a welcome addition. He admits there are fewer independent stores, and attributes this in part to the expensive rental prices in the area. “Some small businesses and entrepreneurs can’t afford it,” he said. “The bigger chains can afford it. If you look at it from a consumer’s point of view, these newer stores provide variety. Hakim Optical – what a display, there’s such variety. It’s great overall. It gives local residents great variety and choice.”

Hotline established for residents with concerns >>>from page 1 year – and over the life of the contract, if we exercise our extensions, that will be savings to the taxpayers of over $100 million.” Minnan-Wong told a Tuesday morning news conference that the city will be concentrating on making sure that GFL provides a high-level of customer service before moving on to privatize the rest of the city’s garbage collection. “I think what the public wants to see is they want to see customer service excellence and value for money,” said Minnan-Wong. “There are going to be some instances where it makes sense and you’re going to find council opposing that for ideological grounds... So what we need to do is we need to make the case to council where it makes sense to move forward with more

contracted out services, not simply in waste collection but across the board.” That is consistent with a promise that Mayor Rob Ford made on his and his brother’s radio show, that despite having made changes to the collective agreement that would allow full contracting out, the final stages won’t likely be implemented until after the 2014 municipal election. City staff will be monitoring collection of solid waste across the west end. GFL is currently the only private company collecting residential garbage under city contracts. After signing with the c i t y, G F L f i n a l i z e d i t s acquisition of Turtle Island Recycling, which had the contract to collect garbage in Etobicoke. CUPE Local 416 President Mark Ferguson said the

beginning of the new contract was “a sad day for residents of the City of Toronto and a sad day for working people across the city.” He said, “It’s a bad day for residents because it’s a day where collectively we’ve lost control and oversight of a critical public service. It’s a sad day for workers because it represents yet another step toward lower wages, less security and less dignity for working people.” The union has established a hotline for residents with concerns or complaints about garbage collection in the area. “Residents who observe shoddy service, the mixing of waste streams or dangerous driver activity can contact 1-866-419-2227,” he said. Residents can also call the city’s 311 service to talk directly to city solid waste staff.

Gathering at Sorauren Park to watch Perseid meteor shower this Saturday Roncesvalles Village resident organizes stargazing event ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Don’t be surprised if you see a group of stargazers laying back comfortably gazing at the night sky in Sorauren Park on Saturday. On Aug. 11, Perseid meteor shower flashes across the sky and to mark the event, longtime astronomy hobbyist and Roncesvalles Village resident Doug Bennet has planned the inaugural event of Sorauren Stargazers. Bennet is calling all stargazers to gather at 10 p.m. in the baseball outfield (close to the dog park) to lie on the grassy slope and watch for meteors. The idea came to Bennet when he and his son went to Sorauren Park to watch the transit of Venus in June. He used a pair of binoculars to project

the event onto a big white board. A crowd of people gathered around to watch the projection of Venus moving

across the face of the sun. “I thought, maybe we should start up a little ad-hoc astronomy club at

Sorauren Park,” Bennet explained. The Perseid meteor shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity being between Aug. 9 and 14. How clearly the meteors will be on Saturday remains to be seen because of all of the lights in the area, but Bennet is optimistic about the view. “Because Aug. 11 is going to be a moonless night you have a better chance of seeing the Perseid meteors when there is no moon out to wash out the sky,” Bennet said. No special gear is required, just bring camping pads, blankets, pillows, reclining lawn chairs, refreshments and whatever will make you comfortable, he said. If the Sorauren Stargazers inaugural event is a success, Bennet said he hopes to have future events during lunar eclipses, meteor showers or other astrological events. “Hopefully we will have a few people join,” Bennet said. “It’s just an opportunity to get away from computer screens and televisions and enjoy nature right from our backyard essentially.”

Residents get update on Emerald Ash Borer Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette hosts a town hall meeting Monday, Aug. 13 in collaboration with Live Green Toronto, LEAF and Green 13 about the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle. Because of this invasive insect, all ash trees in Toronto are at risk of dying from an infestation of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). LEAF will present current information on ash trees, the EAB and the treatment available. The meeting takes place at the Swansea Town Hall, 95 Lavinia Ave., at 7:30 p.m.

Municipal Class Environmental Assessment - Notice of Study Completion The City ofToronto has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study to advance the recommendations of the City’s Wet Weather Flow Master Plan (approved by City Council in 2003) to capture and treat polluted stormwater and combined sewer overflows (CSO’s) that are discharged to the Don River and Central Waterfront. This will help to improve water quality and our environment. In addition, necessary upgrades have been identified to the City’s critical sanitary trunk sewer infrastructure within the study area to improve operations and service future growth. The study has defined the problems/opportunities, identified and evaluated alternatives, and determined a preferred solution and design in consultation with the City ofToronto, regulatory agencies, and the public. The City has accepted the consultant’s recommendations regarding the preferred solution and design, including the following project components: Sanitary Trunk Sewer System l A Lower Don/Coxwell BypassTunnel that will be used on a contingency basis as a bypass to the existing Coxwell SanitaryTrunk Sewer (STS) allowing for periodic maintenance and any necessary repairs of the Coxwell STS, l Four underground storage tanks for offline storage of peak sanitary flows where additional capacity is needed. l Upgrades to the NorthTorontoTreatment Plant (NTTP). Wet Weather Flow Collection and Storage System l Three integrated tunnels (Lower Don/Coxwell BypassTunnel,Taylor Massey CreekTunnel, and Inner HarbourTunnel) connected to an equivalent of 15 underground vertical storage shafts that will collect and store wet weather flows and convey these flows to a new wet weather flow treatment facility. l Three underground storage tanks for offline storage of wet weather flows from four remote outfall locations. Treatment of Collected Wet Weather Flow l A new wet weather treatment facility that will provide high-rate treatment of wet weather flows and will be located on future lakefill in the waterlot south of the existing Ashbridges BayTreatment Plant. l A new pumping station in Ashbridges Grove Park with forcemains connecting to the new wet weather flow treatment facility. l Retrofit of an existing CSO tank at the NorthTorontoTreatment Plant. Opportunities for Review The study was carried out following the requirements for Schedule ‘C’ projects under the Municipal Class EA. An Environmental Study Report (ESR) has been completed and placed on public record for a 45-day review period starting August 10, 2012 and ending September 24, 2012.The ESR will be available for review on the project website at www.toronto.ca/cleanwaterways and at the following locations: Beaches Library 2161 Queen St. E. 416 393 7703
