Axe-throwing league wields wide interest Backyard Axe-Throwing League’s first location opened in Bloor West LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Throwing an axe is much harder than it might look – take it from this reporter, who made a first attempt with coaching from the founder of the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL), whose skill makes it appear effortless. On a Thursday morning in early August, Matt Wilson opened the BATL’s home base on Sterling Road, near Bloor Street West, providing a glimpse into the ever-growing world of this intriguing sport. Wilson’s interest in the art of axe throwing was piqued several years

ago during an October weekend at a cottage when, because of lousy weather, there weren’t the typical cottage activities to partake in. “One of the guys picked up a hatchet,” recalled Wilson, describing the friend as “an Armenian giant,” who then threw it at a tree. A new passion was born after that cottage trip. Wilson and his buddies started an unofficial league with two targets in his backyard that nine years later has grown to include six axe-throwing locations, including Sterling Road, Cherry Street, and Yorkdale Mall >>>FOUNDER, page 15

Bats trapped, tagged and released in High Park study Long after the sun goes down and most of us are fast asleep, Dr. Krista Patriquin and University of Toronto PhD

student Cylita Guy are combing the wilds of High Park in search of bats. Unless it’s raining, the two

spend their nights, from about 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., catching the mammals, whose webbed wings make them the only ones

naturally capable of sustained flight. Their goal? To better understand the creatures’ behav-

iour and habitat needs in an effort to better protect them. Patriquin and Guy are seeking >>>RESIDENTS, page 9
