A mural is in the works for one of the now blank cement walls of the underpass at the bottom of Parkside Drive.

The mural is spearheaded by the community organization Collective Spaces, whose sole purpose is “creative space-making” in public areas of the city.

Earlier this month, the group hosted a community consultation

meeting at the High Park Library in Roncesvalles Village to gather input from area residents on what they would like to see depicted on the underpass, where the Queensway passes over Parkside Drive.

Music gets traditional at Ukrainian Festival Performance to feature lesser-known instruments from Ukrainian history, culture LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Multi-instrumentalist Brian Cherwick says he loves performing at the annual Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival because it gives him a chance to reconnect with fellow musicians while catching up on what’s current in Ukraine.

This year will be Cherwick’s fifth appearance at the threeday event. “(Organizers) are kind enough to keep inviting me back,” Cherwick said during a phone conversation from his hometown of St. John’s Newfoundland. “It’s the largest festival of its kind in North America – it’s a great place to meet up with people doing similar work while meeting up with friends in Toronto.”

No stranger to performing – he’s been on stage since the age of three – Cherwick says that while he doesn’t get nervous, it’s “great” to feel the amount of energy coming back from such a big crowd.

Cherwick plays as many as 30 traditional Ukrainian instruments.

“Some of these things, you don’t see so often,” he said.

Cher wick’s favour ite instrument is the tsymbaly, otherwise known as a dulcimer. Cherwick describes it as, “kind of like a piano with no keyboard.”

“If you look inside a piano, there are a bunch of strings with little hammers,” he said.

To play the tsmbaly, Cherwick holds a hammer in each hand.

“It takes a while to figure out the geography of it,” he said of the instrument’s difficulty.

“Now, I can close my eyes and play it.”

Generations of Cherwick’s family have been amateur musicians. His great grandfather played the fiddle, his dad and uncles also played music.

Cherwick taught himself to play a number of instruments.

He grew up going to concerts and weddings.

“Different parts of Ukraine have different instruments,” he said.

“I choose music that shows the possibilities of each particular instrument.”

When he’s not performing, Cherwick is a musicologist, studying folk music and also writing and performing music for other people. The Toronto Ukrainian Festival organizers have gone to great pains to showcase musical and entertainment acts from Ukraine, Cherwick said.

This year’s 17th annual event will showcase traditional regional culture and the Hutsul people of the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, from Friday, Sept.

13 to Sunday, Sept. 15. As well as the usual festival staples, like the parade, the international and local performers,

food, outdoor beer garden, cultural displays, a midway, a film festival, vendors and street dances, visitors will be treated to the Canadian debut of a photography exhibit by Ukrainian-Parisian photographer Youry Bilak called ‘In the Shadow of the Carpathians.’

Planning forums a great first step

he City of Toronto’s planning department ‘officially’ kicked off a series of public outreach meetings – 16 in total – Tuesday at Nathan Phillips Square, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

These information sessions are an important way to keep Torontonians engaged with their city, their neighbourhoods, and most importantly the planning decisions city hall makes on their behalf.

Dubbed Planners in Public Spaces (PiPS), these meetings will have staff addressing the public on planning matters, giving residents an opportunity to speak with those who provide council with reports on developments across the city.

Toronto planner Giulio Cescato acknowledged the public only sees them when there is a big planning meeting or on controversial develour view opments or studies.

With that knowledge, the planning department opted to give Have your Torontonians the chance to speak say on local to planning staff about both genissues to do with city planning development eral and – in the areas where the meetings are taking place – ask specific questions regarding development in that community.

On so many levels, this initiative is extremely beneficial to everyone involved: city staff can hear directly from residents, without the stresses of an official development meeting where tempers can often run high, and residents can understand some of the specifics that go into planning a neighbourhood.

Every community, every street, every neighbourhood has its own issues and challenges – North York is not the Beach, Parkdale is not Scarborough, Etobicoke is not the centre of the city, East York is not Bloor West nor is it York.

Each neighbourhood has its own experiences, its own demands for development. These meetings give residents an understanding of how a development has come to be, and why it came to be.

This creates understanding well beyond the topic at hand.

Whether it’s budget debates, the potential closing of libraries and schools, or issues with a high-rise condo proposal meetings to learn more about any given subject is a true sign of a forward-thinking city.

Development issues are some of the least-discussed because development in any city is a good thing. No one wants to stop development, because it brings many economic and social benefits to a city.

So, we call on planning staff to continue these outreach initiatives and start planning many, many more.

Council must play fair in Ward 3 decision

O

n Monday, Aug. 26, hopefully slightly more than a bare quorum of council will sit down to debate the question of what to do about Ward 3 Etobicoke Centre.

Although really, debate is the wrong word to describe what will be going on.

Whenever a council seat comes vacant midterm, what the remaining council members are faced with is a game board.

If council is relatively stable in its support of its mayor, it’s a friendly game of canasta. When things aren’t so stable, it’s more high-stakes poker. Maybe Survivor. Occasionally, Russian roulette.

Ward 3 is a high-stakes game for everyone involved.

When Mayor Rob Ford lost Ward 3 Councillor Doug Holyday to the Progressive Conservatives at Queen’s Park, he lost more than a deputy mayor:

david nickle the city he lost a reliable vote.

Ford is ostensibly pushing for a byelection because he believes democracy is the best way to run a city. But the fact that he can barely garner 23 votes on most issues he cares about must surely have banished any thoughts of saving up to $225,000 and just appointing a caretaker councillor.

Ford is really far more likely to find himself another friendly face by asking the residents of Ward 3 to elect one than he is convincing council to appoint one.

The small majority of council who routinely opposes Ford might prefer to appoint a councillor who’d be less hewn to the mayor’s hard right-wing agenda, and indeed, that could be the game they

play.

But just as Ford will have to deal with criticism that in supporting a byelection he’s squandering taxpayers’ money on a councillor who will maybe attend eight or nine council meetings before the general election, so will they have to contend with the accusation that by appointing they’re stealing a mandate from 52,000 electors who deserve a say in how their city’s governed.

Applying that yardstick to the question, the mayor is in the right on this one.

An appointment is essentially undemocratic. It delivers a cut-rate councillor for eight or nine meetings who arrives already beholden to the councillors who supported him or her in the appointment process.

And that debt is considerable. The caretaker steps into a six-figure job that will either be abandoned after eight months of

lacklustre performance, or parlayed into a potentially long political career by supplying the advantage of incumbency in the next general municipal election.

Granted, one expects Mayor Ford will bring to bear his considerable knack for campaigning to help his favoured candidate win the byelection.

But that is fair play in any election. And if a moderate or left-leaning candidate wants to take a stab at the ward Holyday has represented for decades – well, the considerable knack for campaigning that forces on the left and centre can muster can enter the game too.

That’s fine. Because if we’re going to be playing this high-stakes game, we owe it to everyone – particularly the residents of Ward 3 – to play it fair.

Reader offers favourite hikes To the editor: Re: ‘Take a hike,’ Special Feature, July 25.

There are many beautiful multiuse trails in the city and close by.

The following are my favourites: n 1) East Don Parklands - Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue to Leslie and Steeles Avenue In late spring and summer, the trail is shaded (covered by trees) along a portion of Don River. In September, salmon were spotted swimming upstream. There are salmon counts around that time, too.

Starting at Leslie and Sheppard, one way, at normal speed, is about 55 minutes to 60 minutes, round trip is less than two hours. The only thing

to watch out for is some cyclists race on the trail. n 2) Edwards Garden to Sunnybrook Park to Sunnybrook hospital to York University Glendon Campus back to Sunnybrook Park up to Tom Thompson Trail and Edwards Garden.

This route takes about two and a half hours. n 3) Etobicoke’s Humber River Trail This is gorgeous for a fall colour walk from Old Mills subway station to Steeles Avenue West. There are creeks/streams, small bridges and fall foliage along the trail. It could be a five-hour walk. n 4) Mississauga’s Credit River

Culham and Red Trails The route is along the Credit River and takes about two hours to complete. The trail is shaded with gravel surface. There are a variety of fish in the river and birds in the woods. n 5 ) Se a t o n Hi k i n g Tra i l i n Pickering It is as good as, if not better than, the trails in the Rouge Park. To cover Sections 1 and 2 of the trail requires two and a half hours. In short, it is an excellent half-day hike.

By the way, the scenery of these trails looks different in the spring than in fall.

In other words, one wouldn’t feel bored by returning to the same trails again and again.

Must suspend police without pay To the editor: I was a serving member of the police force in my country of origin.

During my service, and still, when a policeman is suspended he receives

no pay.

In the event of him being cleared of any charges, then he will be paid for the time of his suspension.

Time to slash the size of Toronto City Council To the editor: Council absolutely needs to reduce the number of its politicians.

Politicians want to expand for more job security. Taxpayers are looking to survive the constant barrage of regulations and increasing financial burdens, so politicians

can enjoy their higher pays and job security.

By the way, we moved to Toronto from Florida and found you can’t wash your car in your driveway or the street. I wonder which politician got paid by the car wash industry to push such nonsense.

Swansea Village violinist wins grand prize at festival ‘Naturally gifted’ musician garners international attention: LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Swansea Village violinist Emma Meinrenken’s six months of intense training has paid off.

The 14-year-old was the grand prize winner at the National Music Festival at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ont. earlier this month, competing against fellow musicians ranging in age from 14 to 28.

“I was pretty surprised because I knew there was a lot of other people more talented and older. I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Emma confessed. “ As many as 50 musicians competing in eight categories, including piano, strings, voice, woodwinds, brass, percussion, guitar and chamber groups, vied for the grand award title and prize of $5,000. Emma, a scholarship student of Atis Bankas in the Young Performance Academy of the Royal Conservatory of Music, practiced for six months, initially learning her performance piece before perfecting it.

She admitted to some butterflies, but only immediately before her performance.

“Once you get on stage,

once you get the first notes right, you have the right to relax,” she told The Villager.

Emma, who plays a Jamieson-Ivey Amati violin from 1960, on loan from the Royal Conservatory of Music, began playing violin at age four.

“My parents said I showed an interest in music (as a child). They chose violin because we didn’t have a piano,” she said. “It was a hobby (at first). Violin is something that grows on you.”

Emma realized when she was eight, when she got a new teacher, that violin was something she wanted to take seriously.

She said she loves the fact that one can express emotion through music. Emma practices every day, during the school year about an hour in the morning and another in the evening. In the summertime when she has more time, she practices as long as three hours.

“I love it, but it’s still painful,” she said of the long practice hours.

Royal Conservatory of Music Academy Director Barry Shiffman is not surprised at Emma’s success.

“Emma is without a doubt

one of the most naturally gifted and hard working musicians. She’s had a number of recent successes on the national and international stages,” Shiffman said.

Not only did Emma garner the top spot at the National Music Festival, but she also won the top prize at this year’s Stradivarius International Violin Competition, which came with prizes of $7,500 and a violin handmade by Charles W. Liu, president of the competition and violin maker. She also received an invitation to appear as a soloist with the Utah Symphony in their 2014 Dear Valley Festival.

The award money, said Emma, will go towards her post-secondary education.

The recognition, said Shiffman, serves as encouragement and validation that “the path you’re on is the right one, which is crucial for a young musician.”

It is also recognition for Emma’s teacher, Bankas, a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music faculty and member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, he added.

Runnymede health centre gets green nod Runnymede Healthcare Centre was recognized for its leadership in energy conservation with three awards for green achievements.

The Runnymede and St. John’s roads hospital was honoured during a special ceremony Aug. 13. Representatives from Toronto Hydro presented Connie Dejak,

president and CEO with a plaque and incentive cheque for the hospital’s participation in the Ontario Power Authority saveONenergy program.

Among the health centre’s accomplishments was a savings of 34,053 kWh of electricity during the last fiscal year, which is equal to saving

approximately 107 trees.

The hospital also received a $30,454 incentive cheque from Enbridge Gas Distribution for gas savings and the ‘Greening Healthcare 5% Club Award’ from Toronto and Region Conservation Authority for lowering energy use by more than five per cent since 2010.

High Park Rangers is the Nature Centre’s newest nature club for youth.

The High Park Rangers will be meeting Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. to take care of the nature in High Park. This is a great way to spend time outdoors, meet like-minded youth, learn more about nature with experienced naturalists and accumulate “community involvement hours” for high school.

Rangers are asked to make a commitment to attend at least six Thursday meetings and are expected to contact the Nature Centre if they can’t make it. Meetings take place Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and Nov. 7.

Throughout the season, Rangers will be planning a “Know Your

Nature” public walk to teach the community about their stewardship activities.

The hike will be on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m.

In addition to the “Know Your Nature” hike rangers must commit to helping lead at least one more Family Nature Walk on a Saturday afternoon. Rangers may choose to help lead more, if they like.

This is a free volunteer program, but enrollment is limited.

There are separate applications for participants and their parents/ guardians. Both applications must be received for an applicant to be considered for the program.

On the evening of Aug. 5, Omolewa was at home watching TV when she heard a “pop.” She thought it was kids outside breaking the rules, playing with fire crackers. It wasn’t until she saw media reports on television that she learned it was in fact a shooting near her home.

“I was very surprised, disappointed, sad,” she said.

Since then, residents have been trying to heal, to “get things back to normal.”

Initially, parents kept their children inside.

“Everyone was in such a shock. We couldn’t believe what happened,” Omolewa said.

“We’re still on the lookout for strange sights, or strange behaviour.”

July storm sets expensive record The sudden extreme storm and flooding on July 8 has set a record as Ontario’s most expensive natural disaster ever.

The storm caused more than $850 million damage, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Now or never in fight against ash borer beetle TreeAzin must be injected in trees prior to Aug. 31 MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Property owners in Toronto have about two weeks left to protect whichever ash trees can still be saved, say people involved in fighting the emerald ash borer beetle.

A tiny invasive pest, the beetle was found near Hwy. 404 in North York in 2007.

It has exploded across Toronto, slowly killing every ash tree it finds – around 860,000 in the city’s yards, parks, streets and ravines.

The only proven defence is a pesticide called TreeAzin, but it must be injected between June 1 and Aug. 31, when the tree’s vascular tissues can use it to kill beetle larvae under their bark.

Toronto’s infestation, much of it still hidden in seemingly healthy trees, is so advanced next summer may be too late for most ash tree owners to try the pesticide.

“The time is running out,” Josef Ric, Toronto Urban Forestry’s acting supervisor of forest health care, confirmed in an interview Aug. 14.

“It’s very aggressive. It has surprised everybody.”

City contractors injected 4,000 trees with TreeAzin last summer and are treating 9,000 more this year – ash along streets or in parks selected, ward by ward, for being in good condition and not showing a lot of the leaf dieback that first marks the infestation’s effects.

At eye level, contractors staple small green aluminum plates on the injected trees, a sign of the city’s commitment to keep injecting them every two years until the pest is gone.

The city has removed and destroyed 4,000 dead ash trees this year on municipal land, and marked 4,700 more with dots of bright orange paint, to show trees that are dying and doomed.

It has also planted 15,000 replacement trees in a variety of species, said Ric, adding next summer good candidates for TreeAzin may still be found, but predicted there will be far fewer. “What we’ve done so far (in selecting for injections) is almost final.”

The Canadian Forest Service and other agencies are testing natural predators for the beetle, parasitic wasps, but it’s thought it will take 10 years for the ash borer population to crash along with its food supply.

Michelle Bourdeau, program manager for LEAF – Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests – said TreeAzin, provided a tree’s infestation is not visible already, is worth a shot.

“It’s likely cheaper to treat if you’ve got a large tree,” than pay to remove it, she said this week. “It’s an irreplaceable thing.”

‘There’s no reason we can’t be something special’ Davenport residents reflect on the past, look to community’s future at recent town hall

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com With a desire to see the Davenpor t community “become all that it can be,” a volunteer, non-partisan group of residents and business owners banded together to host a town hall meeting during which representatives from various organizations shared their best practices with the goal of developing an action plan.

“There is no reason we can’t be something special moving forward,” resident Matt Park, one of the town hall organizers, told the audience, who had gathered at the DavenportPerth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre, last Tuesday.

Mike Foderick, who grew up in Davenport, and for several years was Davenport Councillor Cesar Palacio’s executive assistant, spoke of

one of the city’s landmarks, which happens to be in and made in Davenport: The West Toronto Railpath.

“It was a forgotten place, full of garbage, abandoned and forgotten until early 2000 when an idea started to germinate, to take the space and make it a park,” said Foderick, co-founder of the project. “The good news is, it’s expanding – from Dundas to almost all the way to King Street, more than double its length.”

The competition invited landscape architects, planners, artists and community members to contribute to an overall vision for the public use of the corridor.

“The exciting initiative received 80 submissions,” Castel said.

Giorgio Taverniti, co-owner of Frank’s Pizza House in Corso Italia, discussed how his business was affected by the St. Clair Streetcar Rightof-Way project. Frank’s has been in business since 1965 and on St. Clair Avenue for 18 years.

“During construction, we encountered tough times,” Taverniti admitted. “There was no parking, no one was coming out.”

Taverniti said he turned to the internet to grow his customer base.

According to Taverniti, St. Clair Avenue West has changed for the better.

“I’ve seen great changes,” he said. “People are coming into the area; there are lots of families.”

Planner Craig Lametti of the design firm Urban Strategies said he has seen businesses co-ordinate to create an online business directory or a “virtual chamber of commerce” through which business owners also advertise spaces for lease.

Lara McLachlan, community development and health promoter at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre, says that according to its research, Davenport has one of the lowest academic outcomes in the city, its level of teen pregnancies between the ages of 15 and 19 are two and a half times the city’s average and there is a high prevalence of illnesses, such as asthma and diabetes as well as frequent visits to the ER. “We flag these as a community health centre,” McLachlan said.

“Over the next five years we’re focusing on improv-

ing health and academic outcomes. We want to see improvements.”

Despite the area’s average household income jumping to $80,000 recently, 75 per cent of the health centre’s clients make less than $15,000 annually.

“We focus on vulnerable people with complex barriers to health,” McLachlan said.

The Abrigo Centre’s Ed Garca shared some of the good work the United Wayfunded organization is doing within Davenport. The hub that brings people together to help those in need, Garca said, is heavily reliant on volunteers.

Davenport is a big, diverse place boasting four mainstreets, Lemetti said.

“Sometimes things can make it easy to forget how good we have it,” he said.

City of Toronto Historic Sites is making use of a cheeky promotional campaign to get millennials / Generation Y interested in local history.

WTF? (What the Fact) is part social media engagement and part traditional advertising promotion aimed at growing a younger audience for the city’s museums.

“It’s a way to revitalize our whole brand and the museums, and make people know we may be about history, but we’re certainly not historic,” said Karen Black, manager of museum services for the city.

Until the middle of September, 100 TTC bus shelters across the city are displaying ads showing a single zoomed-in shot of an unknown artifact found in one of the 10 city museums, with the tagline, “WTF?” and the invitation to post guesses

back to the late 19th century.

“The point is to inspire people to want to find out what the images are by doing research or learning about them,” Aldini-Messina said.

The provocative name – a play on words of a widely used Internet acronym profanely denoting extreme confusion – was chosen knowing it might offend some, a necessary risk to have the campaign stand out, Aldini-Messina said.

“It is cheeky and that’s why we think it will work. It’s different and it’s a new way to get audiences because they are the future of our city,” she said.

About 1,200 people have already shared the WTF? campaign or commented on it through Toronto’s Historic Sites facebook page and Twitter. Correct guesses will win a pass for two to any city museum and the objects’ identities are scheduled for reveal on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

“We hope the campaign sparks discussion, because in our opinion any discussion is good when it gets people talking about history,” AldiniMessina said.
