SERVING BLOOR WEST VILLAGE, THE JUNCTION, RONCESVALLES & ST. CLAIR www.insidetoronto.com
Popular art event in Junction returns Yarn bombing is like graffiti, but requires yarn instead of spray paint. It’s an art form that Mary Breen, owner of the Junction’s Wise Daughters Craft Market, delights in. She has covered several unexpected items in public spaces in crocheted designs with help from other knitting enthusiasts, perhaps the most unexpected: a car. She’s at it again, this time as part of the second annual Junction Design Crawl. The Aug. 24 event will serve as a precursor for Breen for the Thanksgiving Weekend festival: HarbourKIDS: Folk. Wise Daughters Craft Market volunteers will cover all kinds of household items from a broom to a frying pan, a TV, an ice cube tray to a phone and a vacuum for an art installation called ‘Domestic Bliss.’ The Junction Design Crawl got its start last year attracting thousands of people to the retail strip. Approximately nine different businesses along Dundas Street West will be participating – they’ll be identified by white sparkly lights strung up outside their shops. The Design Crawl will operate in an open-house format, according to Paul Mercer of Smash. Smash, Articulations, Mjolk, Russet and Empire, among other businesses will remain open until 11 p.m. with various installations, performances, art pieces and hang-out spots. Families camp out in protest to cuts to Dufferin Grove Park LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Roncesvalles Village residents Heidi Zelmer and her eight-year-old son Yoshi were one of the first families to set up their tent in Dufferin Grove Park on Friday night. Yoshi, excited to be camping overnight in the city, was busy playing with a new-found friend. This was the second consecutive summer that Yoshi and his mom participated in a sleep-in organized in protest of perceived cuts to programming and staff wages in parks across Toronto. As a single mom, who’s unemployed, Zelmer said she would not be able to sign her son up for sports or camp were it not for city subsidies. Until now, Yoshi has been able to take swimming lessons and play soccer for free. “He’s at an age that he needs to be with other children,” said Zelmer of her only child. This summer, Yoshi was able to spend three weeks at a City of Toronto Pioneer Adventure Day Camp. The sleep-in held on Friday was organized again this year by avid park users Jonah Gindin and Jessica Lyons. Dufferin Grove Park’s budget has been significantly reduced for both summer and winter programming this year; a hiring freeze has been in effect since 2011, said Gindin. “The effect has been mitigated mostly by park staff working seven days a week and long hours for less money than in the past,” Grindin told The Villager. “So far, the cuts have only manifested in one Friday Night Supper cancellation, reduced Playground Cafe hours, cancella-
Police pull over teen on e-bike, find gun and drugs ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Police seized drugs and a loaded gun after they stopped a teen e-bike rider for a Highway Traffic Act infraction last Monday. Police said the e-bike rider was pulled over near Dundas Street and Scarlett Road at 3:30 p.m. “During the investigation, the boy was found to be in possession of a loaded .357 Magnum pistol along with a quantity of crack cocaine and marijuana,” police alleged in a news release. A 15-year-old boy faces 11 charges, including possessing a prohibited firearm with ammunition, possessing proceeds of crime, possessing marijuana, possessing cocaine and failing to identify self. He can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

tion of Pizza Bake Oven days and cancellation of wading pool side crafts. But the fear is that over the winter, more cuts will set in, more staff will leave and the capacity to retain much of the programming will be permanently lost. So, we are trying to act while there’s still a chance to mitigate the damage.” Yet, according to Toronto Parks and Recreation’s Susan Bartleman, manager of community recreation, there have been no budget cuts or program changes at Dufferin Grove Park. And, as far as next year’s budget is concerned, it has not yet been
tabled. Bartleman said she’s not aware of any upcoming changes to the local park. Lindsay Zahn, who was setting up her tent with her daughter, said she wanted to participate not only because she and her family are regular campers, but because she is a City of Toronto employee whose pay cheque was cut 22.6 per cent. Earlier this year, part-time city workers’ wages were harmonized across the city, she said. The family-friendly event included a pay-what-you-can Friday night supper, an outdoor ‘movie in the trees’ for kids and a campfire.
Toronto police are looking for feedback from the public. An online poll on the police website seeks information on various policing issues. Questions will be posted and the results published at the end of the survey period on Sept. 3. Results from previous polls are also available. The new poll began on Wednesday and asks residents their opinion on crime trends in their neighbourhoods and in Toronto in general. Residents can have their say by visiting online at www.torontopolice.on.ca/surveys and click on the Have Your Say link.

Witnesses to crime on Toronto streets can now send tips through

The first of its kind in North America, the app includes interactive features that allow residents to alert police in real time about a crime through photos, videos, emails and a button that autodials the Crime Stoppers tip line. The app, designed by Cellflare, has been in development for about a year. It also features a section containing the names and photos of the city’s most wanted suspects. Toronto Crime Stoppers, created in 1984, receives about 200 tips per week. Cash rewards of up to $2,000 are offered to tipsters if their information leads to an arrest. The Toronto Crime Stoppers app can be downloaded from Apple iTunes, Google Play and Blackberry App World.
n Axe attack leads to charges
Police have arrested a man in connection with an attempted murder investigation in the Dundas West and Bloor West streets-area earlier this month. Officers allege the accused assaulted another man with an axe. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Rallin Edward Lawes, 64, of Toronto, has been charged with attempted murder. Junction parents rally support against rail line Stay-at-home parents host outdoor potluck to draw attention to dangers of diesel trains LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Stay-at-home parents in the Junction Triangle, who are frustrated by the government’s lack of action to electrify an air rail link from Union Station to Pearson Airport in time for the 2015 Pan Am Games, are hosting a public meal al fresco that will serve as an opportunity to take their concerns directly to Premier Dalton McGuinty. Coined the ‘Junction Mothers (and fathers) Against Diesel
Potluck,’ the event was scheduled for today at 11 a.m. in Perth Square Park on Perth Avenue, one block south of Dupont Street, adjacent the rail corridor where the provincial government is planning to run the diesel trains. “Stay-at-home moms felt out of the loop and frustrated about the issue,” said Kevin Putnam, chair of the Junction Triangle Rail Committee, adding that potlucks in the neighbourhood are a popular way to rally. Acting as spokesperson, the public relations specialist-turned
full-time dad referenced a June 27 meeting hosted by the provincial transportation agency Metrolinx during which its consultant from an internationally renowned company that has implemented electric rail around the world, confirmed electrification is doable in a timely manner. “They could have it ready in three years and for $400 million instead of a billion dollars,” said Putnam, who attended the meeting. “There are no technical obstacles in the way. The only obstacle is
political will.” Metrolinx representatives at the meeting said they had no decisionmaking authority. electrifying lies with province The conversion to diesel is up to the Liberal government, community members were told at the meeting. “There will be no benefit for us. All residents along the rail corridor will be left with this diesel legacy, this legacy of the Pan Am Games,” said Putnam.
“Why are we being sacrificed for a two-week sporting event?” On behalf of the Junction Rail Committee, Putnam further outlined concerns they had in an Aug. 8 letter to the premier while asking for a meeting. “There are many good reasons to expand public transit, but nothing suggests rushing to install diesel technology in time for a two-week sporting event will have any benefit for the people in West Toronto forced to live with this legacy for the next generation,” Putnam wrote.

The Ex sets the stage for creating family traditions
T
he Canadian National Exhibition has been one of Toronto’s great summer traditions since 1879. Whether you are a newcomer to this city or a born-and-bred Torontonian, the Ex is one of those experiences that make living here special. Many residents hold memories of visits to the fair with family and friends as a key part of their summer. Perhaps they remember going on their first roller coaster, maybe it was the old wooden Flyer, seeing a big-name band play at The Grandstand, or eating a special food that only seemed to be available at the Ex. our view For those spending their first summer in Toronto, it’s a chance Beginning of to create family memories and traditions of their own. CNE marks the The CNE, which opened last Friday and continues until end of summer Labour Day, also marks the official countdown to the start of the new school year for youngsters across the city. It’s a bittersweet time as summer marches to its end, and that’s why the 18 days of the Ex mean so much to those who attend. Along with going to the Ex as a visitor, the fair is also a huge employer for local youngsters. The economic impact of the CNE to Toronto, though, goes beyond youth employment. According to the CNE, it had 1.31 million visitors last year, with many of them coming from out of town, spending their tourists dollars not only at the Ex but also other sites across the city. Along with economic benefits, the Ex is also a place for many young people to highlight skills ranging from dancing to accordion playing to baseball. And speaking of baseball, the Ex is home to one of the province’s most prestigious peewee tournaments. The 56th annual Lions-CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament is now underway at the ballpark located near the Dufferin Gate. Local teams competing in this year’s tournament are from East York, Scarborough, North York, North Toronto, Etobicoke, and a squad from the Toronto Playgrounds league. Other teams participating come mostly from the Greater Toronto Area, with squads this year also travelling in from Stratford and Niagara Falls. The champs of the first tournament back in 1956 were from the East Riverdale playground league, but it’s been 10 years since a Toronto-based team, the Agincourt A’s of Scarborough in 2002, took a title. The tourney continues until championship night on Aug. 30. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. The Villager is a member of the Ontario Press Council. To the editor: Re: ‘Better recycling starts at home,’ Editorial, Aug. 16. While I agree with the gist of the editorial that we must each do our part to sort our trash properly, I believe we need to take a step back further to the origin of our recyclables. While it may not be an issue for the City of Toronto on its own, all municipalities would benefit from requiring the manufacturers of goods to ensure their products and packaging is recyclable. This may entail an increase in packaging cost that may be passed onto consumers, but the ultimate savings would recover those costs. I am prepared to do my part in sorting, but I would hope it would be easier knowing all packaging and products were eventually recyclable. This would ensure the 100 per cent compliance you call for in your editorial. Marc Charbonneau
TTC should remember riders in new board
T
here’s been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing on the transit file this past year. But as the dust settles on the subwayversus-light-rail battle for the future of transit – the hiring and firing of chief general managers — the prospect of new taxes to pay for new subways, our attention slipped away from a more quotidian matter: the question of governance. It came up earlier this year as Toronto City Council voted to keep Karen Stintz as chair of the TTC and replace a commission of Mayor Rob Ford loyalists with members from council’s centre and left wings. That shift — a response to the mayor’s role in the firing of transit boss Gary Webster — was half the plan. The other half was the introduction of an old idea: citizen members,
THE CITY
david nickle
appointed by council, would sit on the TTC along with elected officials. This was something Ford wanted to do holus-bolus, but council went a more moderate route, agreeing to create an 11-member commission with four citizen appointees and seven councillors. In September, Toronto’s Civic Appointment Committee will be making recommendations about who those four citizens should be. Toronto City Manager Joe Pennachetti has hired NAFOR Executive Recruiting to pre-select candidates, and the committee will be
looking at their report in September. Hard to say who will be on that list, but in a letter NAFOR has given a sense of the size of the pool – 485 applied – and the criteria they’re using. The most qualified candidates meet some high requirements: they will understand large project management, have experience working for large boards and large companies and will have strong management skills, honed in the public, private or non-profit sectors. If the commission has four of these sorts on board, the politicians will find themselves outclassed in terms of organizational management: municipal politicians, particularly the ones in Toronto, arrive with more populist CVs. They also may find themselves further isolated from the people who
matter most in the transit equation: namely, the riders who are navigating an increasingly crowded, expensive and frankly spotty service as they make their way about the city. For the past year and a half, those riders could be excused for feeling a little like pawns in a highlevel political chess game between council and the mayor. It would be wrong to say that riders have been utterly voiceless in this age of Twitter and Facebook; but it would go a long way to righting the imbalance, to have one or two citizen appointees whose major contribution to the debate was in their understanding of the rider’s experience. n David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. After-care options for dual-income families In a perfect world, school and work hours would run concurrently. But the average school day begins at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m., while the average work day lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Roughly 80 percent of families in North America have both parents working, and have to make important choices when it comes to after school child care. Here are a few options to consider for the upcoming school year.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS Some children are enrolled in care centers that watch children before school, bus them to school and then return in the afternoon to pick up the children again. This is one of the more costly options in child care. However, it may be more educationally structured than the care programs provided at school. Students who participate in sports or academic clubs may have an arrangement to stay with a teacher, coach or club administrator until their parents

When the decision is made, there are some questions parents should ask before enrollment. • What is the ratio of caregivers to students? • What is the cost of the program? • ow are delayed opening days and early dismissal days handled? Holidays and breaks? • What happens if I arrive late? • What activities will take place? • Is there ample time for homework? • Are caregivers teachers or volunteers? • Are background checks conducted? • Is financial assistance available? • How are emergencies handled? • If my child is absent, do I receive a refund for that day? These are just some of the questions to ask, and parents are encouraged to come up with their own to find the best program for their children.

Learn to sing, dance and act at Stagecoach Canda StageCoach performing arts schools gives children and teenagers the opportunity to explore their creativity on stage while building essential life skills- and most importantly- having fun! Started in England 25 years ago, Stagecoach has helped young people gain confidence and stretch their imagination by learning to sing, dance and act all in one program. As the largest network of part-time performing arts schools for children
ages 4-18 years old, StageCoach offers classes suitable for all abilities and gives children, looking to persue a career in the arts, the skills to succeed. Children who participate for fun get a great form of exercise and learn skills to share with family and friends. All three classes are taught by skilled and caring professionals who have valuable experience in the arts. Dance classes teach kids proper techniques and fun choreography in jazz, hip hop, modern and contemporary.
Dramatic arts help to expand the imagination with role playing. Students learn breathing techniques, vocal production, characterization and improve their speaking skills. StageCoach believes that music is a keystone in building self confidence. Children get the opportunity to explore their voice, and learn rhythms and tones. StageCoach aims to inspire in children a passion for the arts in a non competitive environment. At the end of
the semester, students get the chance to showcase what they have learned in an exciting production. There are no auditions required to take part in classes, however the school continues to maintain a professional standard recognized by the arts community. StageCoach classes take place on the weekends. Early Stage classes (4-6 years old) are held for an hour and half on Saturdays, while older students (618 years old) are placed into age groups

Sign a will when buying a home For most people, buying a home is a significant milestone and the biggest purchase of their lifetime. While Canadians protect their residences with home and title insurance, many are not addressing who will inherit what may be their largest asset. A survey of more than 2,000 Canadians revealed that a majority of adults (56 per cent) do not have a signed will. A will is a legal, written document that sets out the person's wishes about how his or her estate should be taken care of and distributed after death.
The absence of a clear, signed will can become a divisive and contentious issue at a time when families are already experiencing grief, and can result in a range of complications, from belongings not going to the person they were intended for, to court battles that cost thousands of dollars. According to the survey results, only 13 per cent of Canadians sign a will when they purchased a home or condo. During the time you are finalizing your deal is the ideal time to speak with a lawyer. Homebuyers already have a lawyer work-
Express yourself with COLOUR Are you courageous when it comes to decorating your home? Many of us would like to be as creative as possible but need guidance to venture out from the neutrals. Colour is the most important tool in the toolbox, say experts in this field, and often add that one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to infuse the home with colour is with paint. People often feel intimated by this type of expression and that’s why so much of our country is beige and off-white. We need to remember that colour is a great balancer in a space; it’s a juggling act between
neutrals, grounding shades, highlight and accent colours. When choosing a paint palette for any room there are four key components to ensure powerful effects while keeping a harmonious balance: neutrals, which are the beige or creamiest versions of any colour; grounding shades, like blacks, browns and greys; highlights, like the bright white on moldings and window trim; and the all-important saturated pops of colour which add life to any room. You might want your pop of colour to be a powerful accent wall. Then, you can complement
ing on the purchase and should be thinking of having wills and powers of attorney drawn up. Working with a lawyer to create a will can cost as little as internet access for a year and will reduce the risk of relevant issues not being addressed or of a breach of a technical requirement for a valid will. Having a will not only ensures assets and interests are protected now and in the future, it can also bring peace of mind and provide greater assurance for loved ones.

it with neutral upholstery and grounding accents in the accessories to balance it all. For additional guidance, inspiration – and even liberation – here are som great tips:
START SMALL If you want to incorporate a trendy colour into your home but feel intimated, start small with paint or décor accents that are inexpensive. This way, you can always change your mind if you fall in love with a new colour or want to refresh the look of your room.
START WITH A CHIP Use the chip rack at your retailer to find colour families and their complementing shades. A popular way to find an accent colour, for example, is to go a few shades darker in the same family.

IntelliLink in-car connectivity available on all 2013 Buicks Buick will make its IntelliLink in-car connectivity available on every 2013 model year vehicle. And the brand will help owners get acquainted with the advanced technology with realtime over-the-air help. Designed to be used with two hands on the wheel as often as possible, IntelliLink’s layout was created with an emphasis on minimizing distractions. New features for 2013 integrate more functionality into the system’s voice control commands.
The “More like this” feature uses Gracenote media database technology to identify artist and song titles. For 2013, Gracenote’s album cover art display capability expands to include genre and artist art. To speed the use of IntelliLink and keep the driver’s eyes on the road, a new “Quick Info” icon allows access to popular features, audio info and turn-by-turn navigation. An added “Transfer to Private” icon allows a Bluetooth-paired phone call to be moved off the vehicle’s speakerphone.
Buick has also created a support network for customers who need help familiarizing themselves with new IntelliLink technology. Based in Oshawa, Ontario the Customer Care Centre Infotainment Customer Support Team will provide one-on-one guidance for owners. Dedicated specialists at CCC will be trained to provide customers the quick and thorough support they need. New 2013 Buick models will begin arriving at dealerships later this year.

Create a clean and healthy environment inside the car Over the last several years, homeowners have increasingly emphasized clean air in their homes. The growing popularity of home air purifiers suggests today's homeowners want to make certain the environment inside their home is as healthy as possible. While protecting the environment in a home is important, it's equally as important for motorists to maintain a healthy environment in their vehicles. On average we spend roughly 10 to 15 hours per week inside a car, where dust, odors, smoke and other potentially sour smells can make riding in a car rather unpleasant. In addition, air pollution and allergens inside a vehicle can pose a significant health risk to drivers and their passengers. Fortunately, there are several steps drivers can take to maintain a healthy environment inside their vehicle.

Don't fall in love with the "new car smell"
SL AWD model showns
Few consumers can resist the famed "new car smell." Though enticing, the new car smell is actually an outgassing of toxic chemicals from newly formed plastics, and the chemicals in these gases have been linked to birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, premature births, and early puberty in laboratory animals. Though this doesn't mean consumers should avoid buying new cars, it should inspire consumers to address the new car smell immediately. An automobile interior filter easily and effectively remove the harmful gases that stem from the new car smell, while continuously removing additional odors as the car ages.
Vacuum carpets, floor mats and between seats
Perhaps the best way drivers can ensure their passengers have a healthy environment while traveling in a car is to improve the air quality within the vehicle. An automotive clean air system can quickly and effectively purifies the air inside a vehicle by eliminating harmful gases, dust, pollen, smoke, odors, and bacteria. These systems can be easily placed beneath a seat, in the rear of the vehicle or on a seatback, captures big particles, such as human hair and pet hair
Carpets and seating are another collection point for dirt and pollutants and need to be vacuumed thoroughly. Make sure to get the floor mats, the floor under the floor mats and all the way under the seats. Pound your seats with something large like a baseball bat to loosen and knock out all the dirt and soil that has settled into the creases and stitching.
Clean the vehicle's interior
Hot weather can take its toll on drivers, and it can also wreak havoc on their vehicle's interior. Heat from the sun can cause the vehicle's plastics, vinyl or leather parts to emit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which can produce both shortterm and long-term adverse health effects. Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a sun shade on the windshield. In addition, slightly opening the windows in spring and summer promotes air flow through the cabin, helping reduce the risk of VOC buildup inside the vehicle.
Many automobile owners pay particular attention to the appearance of their vehicle's exterior. However, those same drivers don't spend nearly as much time, if any, tending to the vehicle's interior. But a neglected interior doesn't just fall victim to spills and dirt or other particles brought in from the outside. Over time, a neglected interior might begin to grow mildew, which is both unhealthy and unpleasant. In general, clean the vehicle's interior once a month to prevent mildew growth and

>>>from page 1 chance to launch their projects as well. We want to provide a space to rent out to other theatre companies who need a venue to stage their work; to create a space for the artistic community to support each other.” The three want to reach out to not only thespians, but to aspiring comedians and other performers. “The idea is just to be creative,” said Brar. Meanwhile, Rooney is anxious to teach classes in her own space. “I’m excited to give Toronto audiences something new and different,” she said in a statement. “I love acting and I’ve always loved theatre, I love film. That’s why I do what I do,” said the acting coach and director. Launching a new theatre adds to the tapestry of Toronto’s “vibrant” arts scene, said Brar, whose credits include Fringe, Lost Girl, and Smallville. Raised in Winnipeg, Brar moved to California to study at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Later, she relocated to Vancouver where she discovered the city has little independent theatre.
