Grenadier Heights couple reflects on 70 years of marriage, children and things in between LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

A

s their 70th anniversary fast approaches, Muriel and Dr. Laurie Morgan, 92, took the time to reflect on their almost seven decades together. Sitting in recliners in the backyard of their Grenadier Heights home with their daughter Brenda, overlooking Grenadier Pond on a hot end-of-August morning, the couple recalled their Wednesday evening wedding on Sept. 8, 1943. Laurie hadn’t yet graduated from medical school and Muriel was working as an optometrist’s assistant. “It was a war-time wedding,” Muriel said. “It wasn’t very big; it was very pleasant.” Asked what they think of reaching such a significant milestone, Muriel said, “Everyone thinks it’s a miracle.” “We still have our fights but we get over them very quickly,” added her husband. Muriel and Laurie’s parents shared the same social circle, both were on the executive of the Fairmont Park Country Club and the two attended Riverdale Collegiate Institute in the city’s east end, but their paths never crossed until a chance meeting on a tennis court across from Muriel’s house when they were both 19. “We should have met, but we never did,” Laurie said. Muriel was tasked to save a tennis court for a friend, who was meeting three others there to play – Laurie was one of those, but his bike had broken down and he didn’t make it until later. After the

match, the group congregated on the front porch of Muriel’s parents’ house. The rest of their friends eventually left, but Laurie stayed to chat with his future wife. He told her he was headed to medical school. “Within the next week, dad started writing my mom letters,” Brenda said. The couple were married in 1943. Before he would establish a career in Toronto, Laurie was shipped off to Halifax as part of the navy for two years and Muriel joined him. At that point, the two had the first of their five children. Returning to Toronto, Laurie worked as a doctor at a practice at Lansdowne and Wallace avenues

before setting up his own practice on Coehill Drive in Swansea. “For 34 years, he was the Swansea doctor. He made house calls and delivered babies,” Brenda said. In the days before OHIP, Laurie’s patients would pay him in bags of potatoes and slabs of bacon.

With a significant settlement that followed a car accident in 1949, Muriel and Laurie were able to purchase their house on Grenadier Heights in 1950. When asked of the secret to the longevity of their union, Laurie was quick to say, “My wife won all the arguments.” “We had a rule – we had Thursday evenings for ourselves. We’d go out to a movie,” Muriel said. Every summer, Laurie would close his practice for a month so he and his family could go out on their boat. Every year, they would throw a New Year’s Eve party on Grenadier Pond. “We’d have a bon fire. We’d have a hundred people or more.

Everyone would come with sleeping bags and stay over,” recalled Brenda. Muriel was known as the ‘mother of the street’ and then ‘the grandmother.’ Muriel says she doesn’t know a more “wonderful” family than hers. Her children have rallied to ensure the couple can remain in their home. On Sept. 22, at The Messiah Church, the couple, who have eight grandchildren and two great-grand kids, will be renewing their vows as part of the Sunday morning church service. Davenport police division honoured for holding on to history LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Eleven Division police’s new station on Davenport Road as been deemed the best new building in the city by its residents. The division was also the recipient of the Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse and Heritage Restoration. “It’s great. It feels really great – that’s really it,” said Toronto Police Services senior project co-ordinator Enrico Pera of the facilities management department. “When we first saw the building, we knew it could

be something special. I’m really pleased, it’s a beautiful statement for that area.” Even the process that officers took to create their new station – transforming the former Carleton Village Public School into a state-of-the-art building for 11 Division was unique, Pera said. “There was apprehension at first,” he admitted. However, a dedicated group of area residents as part of a heritage advisory committee, played a key role in the repurposing of the school. “They were fantastic people to work with,” he said. “When people

take pride in their neighbourhood, you can do great things.” Michael Moxam and colleague Tom Kyle of the firm Stantec Architecture can take credit for the design of the building, situated at the corner of Davenport and Osler avenues. The community was pleased the two preserved the historical importance of the building, including its front facade. Despite the fact that Toronto City Council gave its permission to demolish the building at 2054 Davenport Rd., police expressed a willingness to try and conserve as much of the building as possible given that local

residents were in favour of saving it. The architects felt the same. Stantec Architecture retained the oldest part of the building, built in 1913, in its entirety and only demolished the 1960s addition to make room for a contemporary police facility in behind. The station includes a community room that can accommodate 40 people where the school library once was, administration and investigation offices as well as a cell area. The parkette was retained and refurbished with help from the city’s parks department. There is visitor parking on the west side of the building and an accessible ramp

leading to the main entrance. The new division is a completely barrierfree, accessible building. “I’m delighted about it,” said 11 Division Unit Commander Peter Lennox of the recognition. “Our facilities people, the architects – they’re the real winners.” Fourteen Division was second in the People’s Choice voting. “Each project involved a considerable amount of public involvement and open communication,” Pera said.

School’s in: Lots to look forward to

Write us

N

ew schools, new programs, new teachers, new classmates. There’s lots going on at both the Toronto public and Catholic school boards as the new school year begins on Tuesday. In our special feature in today’s edition, we look at what’s new in the schools. And there’s plenty: both locally and around the city. To see our comprehensive coverage of what’s new across Toronto, visit us at bit.ly/TOschoolnews A number of Catholic elementary students will be starting classes in new school buildings with the openings of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati in northeast Scarborough and St. Ambrose near Dufferin and Dundas streets. The need for a school in the recently built Scarborough neighbourhood was huge, and parents and students alike are excited about the opening. But education is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about people and programs, of our view which there’s lots to be excited about this year. For example, a number of Changes Northview Heights Secondary abound local School students will be sharing what they learned at this month’s and city-wide Adobe Voices digital media arts summit in California. They were the only students from Toronto to attend the summit, which featured students from 23 countries share art projects aimed at making social changes in areas such as bullying and cultural awareness. Also, students at a number of schools including Blacksmith Public School will be using technology to improve their math skills by playing the computer game Prodigy. Less high-tech, but every bit as valuable in the real world students and their families live in, is a bicycle repair and maintenance program at Central Commerce Collegiate Institute. At Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School, new principal Derek Chen admits he has some big shoes to fill in replacing Maria Pereira. “She’s a legend,” Chen said. “I’m pretty honoured to follow in her footsteps.” While students have all this and more to look forward to, a big part of back to school is also showing off the new fashions to classmates. With that in mind, we invite readers to enter our First day of School Contest. Send us your best first day of school photo and you could win a $250 Cadillac Fairview gift card. Time to repair public confidence in TPS

C

harging a police officer with murder in the shooting death of a youth is so troubling. Troubling, not only because of the circumstances and the tragedies now impacting those directly affected, not only because of the severity of the charge, but also because the incident is eroding Torontonians’ confidence in their police. The outrage that grew as over a million viewers downloaded a video of the shooting also latched on to additional events, such as the number of emotionally disturbed individuals killed by police and the difficulties in laying charges arising from the G20 disturbances. In this case authorities were quick to react. The police chief asked for a review on the use of force. The Ontario ombudsman will study how the police defuse situations. As well, probes are underway by the Special Investigations Unit and the Toronto Police

david soknacki beyond the headlines Service itself. Many hope that once these reports are presented, and the recommendations implemented, all will be well. After all, crime is down and Toronto is perceived as a safe city. To think that Toronto’s policing requires just a bit of tinkering is to miss the warnings revealed by these incidents and the latest crime statistics. While Toronto’s crime has fallen, it has fallen much faster, and to significantly lower levels, in many other cities including in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Compared to other Ontario jurisdictions, and by a number of measures, the ability of Toronto’s police service to solve or otherwise clear criminal code incidents is among the least efficient.

At the same time the world of policing is changing rapidly. Demographics, new legal requirements and policing techniques are all in flux, as are public expectations. Perhaps most obvious example is the ubiquity and impact of posting bystanders’ images online, an activity that forever changes the balance of power among the public, our institutions and the police. It is clearly in the public’s interest to have confidence in its police force, a priority with which our police chief and the Toronto Police Services Board constantly struggle. Along these lines they have encouraged inclusive hiring practices, regularly implemented demands for reform and met with whoever has a complaint. Yet these responses, as well as the probes underway, only address the symptoms of change. It has been almost a generation since the police

services board has worked through, with residents, a vision and direction for the police, advising on priorities and setting expectations. It’s time to do it again. Developing and implementing a new strategic plan for the police will achieve many goals. It will refocus the chief and his officers to meeting residents’ needs. It has the potential of opening up new perspectives to enhance police productivity. Even the process itself will go a long way in refreshing the critical relationship between our police and the public. Should the consequences of the shooting include a complete review of policing that restores our public confidence then at least there will be some lasting benefit from the incident. Ex welcomes new Canadian citizens

ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The process to become a Canadian citizen wasn’t easy. It took a long time and a lot of work, but when Hassiba Slimani was the first person called up to be recognized at a special citizenship ceremony at the Canadian National Exhibition, she said it was all worth it. “I am so happy, I have been waiting such a long time,” Slimani said. Slimani, 31, lives at Dundas and Bloor in Toronto’s west end. Originally from Algeria, in North Africa, Slimani came to Canada eight years ago and both of her children were born here. “Canada is the best country,” Slimani said. “Back home you don’t have as many rights and it isn’t a great place to raise kids. That is why we came here.” While Slimani and her family were going to spend the rest of the special day at the CNE enjoying the rides and games, she said what she was most looking forward to, as a new citizen of Canada, was to get her Canadian passport.

Deadline driven design at Instyle With fall just around the corner, construction bins are popping up all over Bloor West Village and contractors are setting up shop for another busy season. Local residents and owners of Instyle Kitchens and Bathroom, Michael Lamarche and Gerry Turino, have been renovating in the area for over 12 years. With over 400 completed local renovation projects they have strong support from past clients who are now acting as references for their renovations of local kitchens, bathroom, basements, additions and large custom homes. Many of their past clients will invite new clients over for a quick tour of their completed work, giving Instyle a gold seal of approval. At Instyle, every project is treated as top priority. “A constant complaint we hear from local residents is how they hired a contractor to do what seemed to be a straight forward project and instead of taking three to four weeks to complete it, ended up dragging on for six to 12 months,” says Turino, a Master Electrician, Master builder and a Kitchen and Bath Designer. “Just have a

When you make the initial phone call to 416-833-4343, a free in house consultation and quotation will be set up. At the meeting you’ll view a slide show of past, local projects. Then, a general ballpark figure is given

based on your project discussions. At a later date, you will be invited to the local showroom at 361 Jane St. (near Annette) to select all material cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, flooring, electrical, and plumbing for your dream kitchen and bathroom. Instyle also handles all kitchen cabinet layouts drawings, and permits. At the end of this second appointment, with all the material selected, Instyle will present an accurate cost for the project with a clear start and finish date. West-enders start petition to create a water park for dogs ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com It could be as simple as a puppycentric wading pool or as elaborate as bleachers and features built around a dog oasis. Either way, Krystine May is hoping a petition she started will convince the city to build Toronto’s first water feature for dogs. May, who lives near Trinity Bellwoods Park, is the owner of two French bulldogs, Tank, 5, and Pepper, 3. She also owns a clothing company specializing in dog and children’s outerwear, inspired by her pups, and said she is ingrained in the urban dog owners scene in Toronto’s downtown. She often takes her dogs to the off-leash area in Trinity Bellwoods Park. “When we had the heat wave this summer, there was nowhere for me to take them to cool them down,” May said. “Sure I can hose them down in my backyard, but I thought it would be really nice to be able to go to a park and let them splash around in a pool, just like kids would.” The more May started to talk to people in her community about it, the more she felt others also thought

a water feature for dogs would be a good idea. Trinity Bellwoods Park has a rather large and well-used off-leash area in a recessed area of the park known as the “dog bowl”, which May said she believes is the perfect place to house a water feature, such as a wading pool, just for dogs.

Currently there are no water features in any parks in Toronto designed, or dedicated, for dog use, May said. Ed Wugalter, chair of the K9 committee in High Park, said a dog water feature is something dog owners would love, provided it is sanitary. “It would need continuous cir-

culation of water,” Wugalter said. “These pools or bowls can get filthy in very short periods and can become hazardous to dogs’ health.” In High Park, someone has brought a small wading pool of their own to the park where they supervise it and keep it clean for a couple of hours in the evening, Wugalter said. But the city refused the organization’s request to have a sprinkler running to let the dogs cool off because it would result in mud because of the lack of a connected drain. Dogs are not permitted to go into any kind of pools or wading pools currently in Toronto parks. Cherry Beach, in Toronto’s east end, has an off-leash area that extends into Lake Ontario, but it isn’t a viable option for May, Tank and Pepper. “I don’t own a car, so to be able to get out there is a problem,” May said. “And because of the E. coli levels after the (July 8) flood, there were several weeks during the heat wave where you couldn’t actually take them there anyway.” These things all contributed to May starting a petition aimed at Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation asking them to build a water feature for dogs

in Trinity Bellwoods Park off-leash area. She also started a facebook group to promote her proposal for a wading pool or water feature dedicated to dogs called Trinity Bellwoods Dog Water Park Campaign (www.facebook.com/home.php#!/ groups/188623814641880). May has been in touch with area park and residents groups as well as Councillor Mike Layton, and May said everyone she has spoke to is receptive to the idea. “I still have to do a lot of leg work getting the word out,” May said. “But no one I have spoke to verbally about it has thought it was a bad idea.” Her dreams for the off-leash area don’t end with the water feature. May said she envisions seating along the incline into the bowl for families to watch the dogs, as well as activities and dog-oriented markets and proper green bins to put dog waste. “As a dog owner I feel like it would be a really unique feature for the neighbourhood,” May said. “It would be advancement for the dog community and the whole community.” ~ with files from Lisa Rainford

Toronto Book Award finalists named, winner announced Oct. 9 DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

39th Toronto Book Awards was announced earlier this month. The awards, which are granted jointly by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Public Library, offer $15,000 in prize money – $1,000 to each finalist, and the remainder to the winning author. All the nominees are chosen in part because their work is reflective of Toronto. In a statement, Mayor Rob Ford offered his congratulations.

A saucily-titled book of photographs of Toronto is up against a gay journalist’s memoir of his coming-of-age in the Middle East, a collection of poetry evoking Group of Seven painter Tom Thomson, a novel of a large children, and another about unhappy foster parents, for the 2013 Toronto Book Award. The short-list for the

“These five exceptional books truly reflect the diversity and the unique cultural talents of our great city.” Toronto’s Chief Librarian Jane Piper also praised the finalists. “Once again I’m struck by the range of perspectives on the city,” Pyper said. “A novel and a memoir each tackle questions of identity; a volume of poetry connects an iconic Canadian artist to urban life; a book of photo-

graphs invites us to really look at the city around us; and a second novel paints an intimate portrait of a marriage. They all make for wonderful reading, and I congratulate these very fine writers.” This year, the finalists are: • Kamal Al-Solaylee for Intolerable: A Memoir of Extremes, detailing his childhood growing up gay in a large family in the Middle East; • Patrick Cummins and

lenges that a childless Toronto couple has raising the young son of friends incapacitated in a car accident. The authors will read from their works at the Word on the Street book fair Sept. 22, and also at a reading at the Yorkville Branch of the Toronto Public Library Oct. 3. The winner will be announced Oct. 9.

Shawn Micallef for Full Frontal T.O., a book of photographs of Toronto architecture; • Kevin Irie, for his book of poetry, Viewing Tom Thomson, A Minority Report; • Aga Maksimowska for her novel Giant, about the experience of a tall-for-herage young girl’s immigration to Canada; • Katrina Onstad, for her novel Everybody has Everything, detailing the chal-

The average North American child spends from one to three hours per day with his or her eyes on a computer screen. The increase of nearsightedness (myopia) in children worldwide may be a direct consequence of this activity, pediatric eye doctors say. In fact, children using computers before their visual systems are fully developed is at the very heart of the public health problem called 'computer vision syndrome’. A study at the University of California reports that 25-30 per cent of computer-using children need corrective eyewear to work with the equipment comfortably and safely – and similar studies in Asia report that first-graders with myopia have increased from 12.1 per cent to 20.4 per cent since 1995. In the last three years, myopia is reported to have doubled

to 34 per cent in seven- to nine-year olds. To guard against damage to your child's eyes: • Schedule a comprehensive eye exam as your child enters kindergarten, including near-point (computer and reading) and distance testing. • Schedule an eye exam before school begins every year. • The recommended distance for children between the monitor and the eye is 18-28 inches. Any closer risks eye strain. • Be aware of behaviour that indicates problems such as eye redness, frequent rubbing of the eyes, unusual posture, or complaints of blurriness or eye fatigue. – newscanada.com

Help clean up rubbish around the Humber River The third annual Humber River Clean Up is set to kick off once again on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. The event was founded by Bloor West resident Rick Crawford, president of 1-800-RID-OF-IT – one of Canada’s leading national rubbish removal companies – and a keen kayaker, who decided to take action after seeing the mass of accumu-

lated rubbish while paddling in the area. “Pollution is not just impacting the delicate Humber River ecosystem, but is literally burying our history,” Crawford said in a statement, noting that a previous cleanup unearthed a provincial historical plaque, commemorating the site as a trading post founded by Jean Baptiste Rousseaux

(1758-1812). “As a local kayaker I can’t believe the things that have ended up in the Humber River and around the shoreline. It’s a beautiful part of the city, but it really needed someone to step in and clean it up. As a national rubbish removal company we’ve got the trucks, staff and expertise to get this done.” The waters of the Humber

and the surrounding parkland constitute a hidden wildlife sanctuary in the midst of the city, with mink, beaver, blue heron, fox, deer and white egrets all living in or near the Humber River. “In 2008, we pulled more than one metric tonne of garbage from the river, including rusted shopping carts, garbage cans, bottles, aluminum cans and a

few unidentified objects,” Crawford said. “This year we are working to grow the scale of the clean up by challenging other west Toronto businesses to step up and help keep this amazing resource clean.” Crawford is now calling on local residents, small businesses and corporations to pitch in and help at this year’s event.

Volunteers are invited to meet at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the parking lot just south of Petro Canada gas station at 8 South Kingsway (north of The Queensway). The clean up will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. What areas of the city do you see litter? Let us know: contactus@insidetoronto.com

Back to school – steps to your child’s success Advice from CCAC can ease your child’s anxiety and stress about the first week of school The first weeks of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting: new teachers and classmates, bigger classrooms, new routines, more schoolwork - these can all contribute to feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. This can be an especially anxiety-ridden time for those changing schools, or making the move from elementary school to high school or onwards, and can negatively affect your child’s mental health. Schools are at the forefront of dealing with mental health and addictions issues experienced by children and youth. A team of specialized mental health and addictions nurses at Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) work in Toronto’s schools to provide advice, consultation and education on mental health issues. Here are some tips to de-stress students returning to school: • Remember: mental health is just as important as physical health • Sleep well and eat well-balanced meals: this is a foundation every child needs • For younger children, es-

tablish a “back to school” routine around wake-up time, bedtime, and meals before school starts • Parents, be positive: children take cues from you. Your excitement and confidence about the upcoming school year will spread • Communication is key! Ask your children about fears and concerns about the new school year. Listen. Check in often and show support. • What can increase comfort levels during the first week back: help your child figure out their new bus or subway route; take your younger child on a walk around their school, pointing out their classes – these will all help them feel more confident about

their new environment • Emotions magnify – parents can support children through feelings of fear, anxiety, or uncertainty, and they won’t find them so overwhelming. Make sure your child knows they are not alone. • Encourage your child to build friendships Back to school stress and anxiety are normal for students, and usually they pass within the first few days or weeks. If your child continues to seem anxious or stressed, or displays unusual behavioral changes, it may be time to seek the assistance of a mental health professional.

DiNovo got the idea to host these live streamed discussions after she was asked to be part of a “Google Hangout”, a videoconference that allows two or more users to talk and see each other via a web camera, hosted by Steve Paikin of the television show The Agenda.

New TTC uniform proposal raises ire Run the railpath to support The Stop Controversy erupted last week when TTC workers rejected a proposed uniform re-design resembling the colours of the Montreal Canadiens. The outcry was so much it led TTC CEO Andy Byford to say in a statement that a posted picture of a blue, red and white striped golf shirt was only a “proposal” and no final choice has been made. Byford said he preferred a “predominantly” blue uniform, a colour deeply associated with the Canadiens’ arch-rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whatever the design, TTC workers are scheduled to wear the new duds beginning in 2014. among bike theft victims wCouncillor

Thousands of bicycle owners have their rides stolen in Toronto every year, and now Mary-Margaret McMahon can add her name to the list. A Giant Via bicycle belonging to the Beaches-East York councillor was stolen from right outside city hall last

An online database allows cyclists to report ‘door prizes’, which occur when a car door is suddenly opened in the oncoming path of a cyclist. Now a struck rider can register an incident at www. doored.ca, and post details on the severity of the accident, the licence plate of the car involved and other information. According to site creator Justin Bull, the purpose of the database is to provide a reliable tracking system for door prizes citywide. The Toronto police board voted this month to review its

current policy of not tracking such collisions, which it discontinued in 2012. on Harbord bike lane wPetition

A petition is calling for separated bi-directional bike lanes on Harbord Street and Hoskin Avenue. There are currently painted lanes on both sides of Harbord, which turns into Hoskin east of St. George Street, but the Cycle TO petition seeks fully separated lanes, which it says will encourage more riders and reduce fatalities. So far, 146 people have signed the petition, but some commenters warn separated bi-directional bike lanes are dangerous since they are too constrained to evade collisions. The city plans to install separated bike lanes on Harbord-Hoskin in 2014. View the petition at www. cycleto.ca Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. The second annual Railpath Community Run takes place on the railpath Sunday, Sept. 29. This event is intended to bring the neighbourhood together to raise funds for The Stop Community Food Centre while enjoying a popular public space. Conceived by avid runner and local resident Shazia McCormick, the Railpath Run is a time trial. With the railpath being 2.1 kilometres in length, participants will loop the path as many times as they can in the 45-minute window allotted. To enable participation at appropriate levels, there are two participant waves. The first will be a

runners’ wave geared toward seasoned runners and those people looking to set a personal best time. The second wave will be a fun run/walk that will be more casual and have people of all abilities participating. The event will include official chip timing, providing participants with their time every 1 km along the course. Prizes will be awarded for best times in the runners’ wave and both waves will have draw prizes as well. Registration for the event is $30 per person and is available through the Running Room website (www. runningroom.ca) with special rates for groups and children. The registration fee includes

a T-shirt, a shoe-tag-style finisher medal, refreshments and draw prizes. The tentative event schedule is: 8:30 – 9 a.m. – Support tents open/racer information table open 9:00 – 9:15 a.m. – Kickoff 9:15 – 10 a.m. Wave 1 (runners) 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. – Wave 1 prizes and staging for Wave 2 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. – Wave 2 (walkers and casual runners) 11:15 – 11:30 a.m. – Wave 2 prizes and close

Saying ‘I do’ to the best wedding photo venue Roncesvalles photographer creates interactive map listing the most popular sites LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Just unveiled, Roncesvalles Village photographer Joseph Michael Howarth has created for those recently betrothed couples, an interactive map of the most popular wedding venues and formal photo locations within the Greater Toronto Area. The specialized Google map boasts as many as 120 – and growing – most photogenic venues, including parks, bridges and markets from Niagara Falls to the City of Oshawa. “It’s been a long time

coming,” confessed Howarth at a Roncesvalles Village coffee shop recently. “Two years ago, I came up with the idea. Each place I shoot, I think, ‘Alright, I’ve got another spot to add to the map.’” Most weekends, especially in summer and fall, Howarth is busy photographing happy couples within a two-hour radius of Toronto. Muskoka, for example, would warrant its own map, he said. A newlywed himself, Howarth shoots as many as 30 weddings annually. Not only is this map suitable for wedding sites, but also for engagement and

family photos, he said, citing his favourite locations, like the Junction, High Park and the Distillery District and a little-known Mississauga spot called Karya Park, a Japanese Tea Garden. “I learn a lot from my clients, but this isn’t just for clients, it’s for everyone,” he said. Wedding reception venues are identified by red marker, wedding and engagement photo locations in green and blue markers and yellow ones are for special ceremony spots. Howarth was inspired to create the map in part because

one of the most common questions he is posed by engaged couples is “where” should their photos be taken. Many factors come into play when making this decision, however, location should be top priority. The map also includes links to sample wedding, engage-

ment and family photos that Howarth has taken at each location and provides details on each venue, such as permits and price. “One of my favourite shoots was at the CNE at sunset with the sun setting on the rides,” he said. The Etobicoke-raised

Layton statue unveiled at moving ceremony REBECCA FIELD rfield@metroland.com Torontonians honoured the two-year anniversary of the death of former federal NDP leader Jack Layton with the official renaming ceremony of the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. A bronze statue of Jack Layton sitting on the back seat of a tandem bicycle, inviting Torontonians to take the front seat, was unveiled at last Thursday’s event. MP Olivia Chow (TrinitySpadina), Layton’s widow, made a speech at the event, along with Jack’s son, Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton, Mayor Rob Ford and Ward 28 Toronto CentreRosedale Councillor Pam McConnell. “The Toronto island is truly a magical place,” said Chow tearfully as she spoke about the lifetime of memories the family had together on the islands – starting with her marriage to Jack where an ash tree now stands.

“We watched the sunset, ran with the kids, played, partied, and enjoyed the deep friendship with our islander friends,” said Chow who noted the tandem bicycle they rode not only across the island together, but across the city together, was their wedding present to each other. “I was the back (rider). I got

Jack’s back,” Chow said. “Now he has your back.” The bronze statue sits in the park surrounding the ferry terminal that the city plans to continue beautifying after today’s naming. It was created by artist David Pelletier. “It’s a great thing about the tandem bicycle, because it’s faster than regular, because

Mayor Ford made a short speech, remembering the mentorship Jack provided him at the start of his political career in Toronto, despite their different political leanings. “(He said) ‘Rob, never take things personally — it’s politics.’ — I’m still trying to learn that,” joked Ford. “This dedication is Toronto’s way of saying thank you. Traffic signal boxes to be adorned with public art A city beautifying project will see traffic signal boxes wrapped and adorned with public art to discourage graffiti and illegal postering. When the Outside the Box initiative is completed, the entire surface of some 2,200 metal boxes, which house the controls to operate and co-ordinate traffic signals, will be covered in a wrapping made from a special coating intended to make graffiti removal easier. Two types of wrapping were created for the project, containing designs from renowned Canadian graphic

artists Gary Taxali and the late Moira McElhinney. A panel of 11 artists, jury-selected through the StreetARToronto initiative (StART ), will also handpaint 20 traffic control boxes between now and Oct. 25 at various locations. The designs, according to city public works chair Denzil Minnan-Wong are intended to foster an artistic sense of city identity as well as combat vandalism. “ We look for ward to beautifying these boxes and hope that traffic-signal boxes around the city can

become an impressive public art collection,‘” said MinnanWong in a statement released Tuesday. The project is part of the city’s ongoing campaign to reduce graffiti. Similar street furniture wrapping is employed by other Canadian municipalities and the Toronto Financial District BIA recently installed vinyl wrapping on traffic poles along the intersection of King Street West and Bay Street.
