Whelan performs in Stones in His Pocket Help light Roncy for holidays LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Junction Triangle-based actor Mark Whelan has a following of a particular demographic he attributes to one Canadian brewing company with which he’s had a five-year relationship. “I seem to be pretty popular with guys between the age of 25 and 35,” Whelan said with a smile during a conversation at a local Junction cafe. “They often stop me on the street to ask, ‘Are you the Sleeman’s guy?’” Indeed, Whelan has appeared in eight Sleeman Brewery commercials in which he recounts the company’s notorious history. Viewers might recall his opening line of dialogue, “Every bottle of Sleeman’s has a past...,” as he sits on a bar stool before digging into a trunk of gold aboard a pirate ship amidst duelling pirates; or in another where he tells of George Sleeman’s fight against prohibition. As the saying goes, it has taken Whelan 25 years to become an over-

night success. “I’m really lucky because I get to work right across the board, in television, film, commercials and theatre,” he told The Villager. “Theatre is probably my first love.” Whelan is starring in a production of Stones in His Pockets, an Irish play penned in 1996 by Marie Jones for the DubbleJoint Theatre Company in Dublin, Ireland. It is presented by the Irish Stage Company of which Whelan is a founding member and will be performed at the Alumnae until Dec. 12. The play is extremely funny, said Whelan, but is regarded as more of a tragicomedy. “It’s not uncommon for Irish people to deal with tragedy through comedy,” he said. Set on the west coast of Ireland in a small town, Stones in His Pockets is a movie-within-a-play. There are two main characters, Charlie Conlin, played by Whelan, and Jake Quinn, played by co-producer and fellow actor Stephen Farrell. The two play extras cast in the sequel to The Quiet

Students take on documentary filmmaking in CityShorts LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com For four years, Helen Costa, a Bishop Marrocco Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School student, has been taking the 504 streetcar, yet it wasn’t until recently that she discovered just how special some shops along its route are. As part of a filmmaking pilot project called CityShorts, presented by the not-for-profit Back Lane Studios, Costa was assigned the task of creating a three-minute documentary focusing on a particular aspect of Roncesvalles Village. Initially, Costa confessed, she wasn’t too thrilled about her topic: the Old Country Shop, a European gift shop on Roncesvalles Avenue. “But, once we went down there and introduced ourselves to the shop owners, it was wonderful,” Costa, a Grade 12 Religion Arts student, said. “They were so sweet.” The Old Country Shop is the only

German store in Roncesvalles Village, Costa said she learned. “Obviously, over the years, things have changed, but this is the only shop that maintained its history. Everything is original,” Costa said. “A

lady who had come to the store while we were there filming had visited the store as a child. She said everything was still the same. She could see her childhood in the store.” After filming was complete, Costa

and her group decided what story they wanted to tell in three minutes. They called their film A Journey to Old Fashioned Europe. “I take the 504 streetcar – I’ve never once looked out the window and acknowledged this shop. When I look at it now, it’s a special little store,” Costa said. Because the students only had a month to prepare their films, Back Lane Studios founder Ellen Moorhouse said she and its members prepared a roster of topics the students could choose from and provided filmmaking mentors to support them. The students had the opportunity to see their work on the big screen at the Revue Cinema on Nov. 20. The goal is to show the students’ films at the Revue as part of regular movie screenings before full-length features.

The Roncesvalles Village Business Improvement Area’s (BIA) Christmas tree had seen better days. Last year, it shone brightly on the High Park library’s lawn. This season, the branch is undergoing renovations, displacing the tree. And, so the search was on for a new tree. Because of a shoestring budget and current weather conditions, a new, planted tree wasn’t in the cards this year. Instead, Feihl approached Roncesvalles United Church (formerly Emmanuel Howard Park United Church) Rev. Anne Hines. Together, they decided on the two existing mature trees that flank the north entrance of the church that’s situated at Wright and Roncesvalles avenues. “The entrance to the Village Healing Centre (at the church) is there; the flea market is there. In a way, it’s kind of an entrance to the heart of the community,” BIA manager Veronica Feihl said. “The trees are right there beside the sidewalk flanking the street.” The BIA, Roncesvalles United Church and RoncyWorks, a casual network of volunteers who work together to improve the neighbourhood, are inviting community members to help fill the trees with solar-powered holiday lights on Saturday. Lights cost $15 each. The lights are to celebrate community spirit as well as all rituals, Kwanza, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah and Yuletide, all symbolic of light-bearing practices. Hand-crafted (or purchased) solar lights, and donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the church, 214 Wright Ave. The Saturday tree lighting event runs from 1 to 4 p.m.

T

he Syrian humanitarian crisis has gripped the world, and the world is finally responding. Traumatized by the horrors of war, a life away from unimaginable violence is what these refugees seek. They are looking for a life of peace, a life of hope, and a future for their children in a land free from bombings, unwarranted arrests and detentions, rape, torture, intimidation and, of course, death. This is what Syrian refugees are fleeing from. Lifeline Syria, a Toronto-based organization, will recruit, train, and assist sponsor groups to welcome and support 1,000 Syrian refugees coming to Canada as permanent immigrants to our view resettle in the Greater Toronto Area over the next two years. It’s time to Its website states some startling facts: more than 75 per cent of put people Syrian refugees are women and before politics children; fewer than one per cent of Syria’s refugees will get a chance to be resettled overseas. And after nearly four years of civil war, more than a quarter of a million people have died, more than half of whom are believed to be civilians. It’s our national obligation to help the needy, the afflicted, the poor and the tortured. It’s our national obligation to welcome the Syrian refugees with open arms; not only is it the humane and decent thing to do, but our welcoming nature will help facilitate the settlement process so refugees can move from being victims of war to contributing members of Canadian society. It’s time to put people before politics. The Government of Canada will work with Canadians, including private sponsors, non-governmental organizations, provincial, territorial and local governments to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees to our country. Welcoming the refugees is not only to benefit their physical health, but their mental and emotional well being. How can we not benefit as a collective people when we are doing good toward our fellow man? For more information on how you can help the Toronto resettlement process, visit www.lifelinesyria. ca or read our story on The Clothing Drive – tinyurl. com/zrtrd2h – a Toronto-wide initiative that has collected thousands of pieces of warm clothing for Syrian refugees and is now in desperate need for a larger facility to store the donations, as daily drop offs continue.

Councillors face a very real budget process It’s about to get real. That was the message from Toronto’s new top bureaucrat to Mayor John Tory and the members of his Executive Committee. For the first time in years, city staff will be crafting a preliminary operating and capital budget that will need serious political attention. City manager Peter Wallace told the Tuesday meeting of the powerful committee in no uncertain terms that if council wants to balance the budget and provide a property tax increase at around the rate of inflation, council’s going to have to figure it out. “We have a very challenging decision environment,” said Wallace, who came to the city earlier this year from his job as head of the civil service at Queen’s Park. “Pressure is around five per cent before any political decisions are made by council. That is typically the type of pressure that we see, but that is not yet consistent with a residential tax

david nickle the city rate at the rate of inflation and it’s not consistent with known capital pressures. With staff recommendations we can partially, but not fully resolve that gap.” This is a big change from the way council has become used to receiving its budget recommendations. Since the middle days of David Miller’s administration, city staff have presented a budget that more or less balances out, which is to say, the city’s programs are more or less funded by a property tax increase that more or less hits the rate of inflation. Sometimes, surprises happen as earlier this year, when money the city had been expecting from the province didn’t materialize. Council figured out a complicated self-borrowing scheme to maintain the property tax increase then,

but that was a one-time fix. This time, council is on notice that the situation hasn’t fixed itself, and city departments have generally not been able to meet the target of two per cent reductions that Tory promised would happen over the course of the year. So it’s going to be up to council, and Wallace is hopeful Toronto’s 45 elected leaders will be up to the challenge to find political solutions where mere administration is not enough. I would be more hopeful myself, had I not watched council try to do exactly that back in the early days of amalgamation, when the city was placed under extraordinary financial constraints by the downloading of hundreds of millions of dollars of new services. What resulted then was a combination of a war of words between the city and the province, and a desperate attempt to rearrange the city’s finances to enable a

property tax freeze that was finally unaffordable. Among other things, the city got deep into a computer leasing deal that cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars and required a $26-million public inquiry to sort out. When staff brought forward their unbalanced budgets then, councillors were faced with hair-whitening options for savings or revenue that went nowhere and paralyzed the process. The solution was, ultimately, to engage staff in providing a real budget with real solutions. It made it all a bit dull. Tory has made a mandate of being a bit dull, and it will truly be a test of that mandate, to see how he deals with what is going to be, once again, a very interesting and very, very real budget process.

Organizers are encouraging everyone to donate to the drive’s crowdfunding campaign online (http://bit.ly/1TnRQvI) so that The Clothing Drive can afford to rent its own facility. “One of the things that I’ve been trying to get across is that it doesn’t need to be a big donation, like $500,” Gammon Dewling said. “I’ve told my kids we’re going to donate $10 a day.” Already, a package of clothing was delivered to a refugee family, a mother and her three children, in Toronto. The Clothing Drive’s program director Julie Mahfouz accompanied a private sponsor to meet them, an experience she called humbling. She and vol-

the day with all the messages, emails, sorting and space issues immediately subsided,” Mahfouz said in a statement. “She was a real person from Daria, Syria – a place that has been bombed over and over again since 2012.”

Her English is limited and she has not left the building she has lived in since she arrived in Toronto. “She was so shy to ask for too many clothes, but gracious and enormously thankful when our volunteers went above and beyond to give her more than what she had requested,” Mahfouz said. “When she spoke in Arabic with our volunteer you could feel her excitement.” Mahfouz said the mother was relieved when she realized volunteers had given her looser fitting clothing and hijabs. “When the children saw the four large bags of clothes and shoes that were waiting for them, they were so happy that they would finally be able to wear the sizes and the styles made for their little frames,” she said. Mahfouz is a small business owner in Toronto. The initiative is a personal one for her. Her husband is Syrian and still has family in Syria. “The atrocities happening in that country are real and

those who are coming here have experienced that awful reality,” she said. “We need to help them. We look at our lives in Canada; the opportunity and abundance we have, our kids sleeping in warm, safe beds and we are grateful. If you ask me why I am leading this initiative, the answer is simple – I’m a Canadian and that’s what we do. We help. We give.” Earlier this month, one of The Clothing Drive’s creators Laura-Jean Bernhardson, founder and CEO of Fresh Collective, a clothing boutique in downtown Toronto, posted a notice explaining that her Queen Street West store would be a drop-off point for the clothing drive. “Right away, the wonderful people of Toronto jumped in to help in droves,” she said in a statement.
