Details of the motion, which passed at last week’s council meeting, remained confidential until Tuesday night when Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette was able to share the information at a public meeting in preparation for the Jan. 6 OMB hearing. The motion further authorizes the city solicitor to obtain outside consultants, Doucette told more than 200 residents who had gathered for the community meeting. Comedian Amanda Day has been doing stand-up for about eight years and yet, despite the many compliments from family and friends, she says she’s pretty sure her mother would rather she had picked another career. “My mom wrings her hands,” the Bloordale resident told The Villager. “I think she’d prefer I’d become a lawyer.” A graduate of Humber College’s comedy writing and performance

program, Day will be performing as part of the Toronto Comedy All-Stars East Vs. West Comedy Battle called ‘Your Hood’s a Joke’ Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Comedy Bar. This comic combat promises to determine which side of Yonge Street is funnier. Day takes the stage against local comedians who are regularly featured on MTV, The Comedy Network, Just for Laughs and more, like Danish Anwar, a Tim Sims Award finalist, Ryan Dillon, a BiteTV Award winner and Mark Debonis, a >>>day, page 11

Mastering the centrepiece

Runnymede CI high school sweethearts mark 64 years CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com It comes as no surprise that the walls at John and Joan Howard’s home abound with family portraits – afterall, the south Etobicoke couple, who celebrated their 64th anniversary this week, spent 50 years of their near picture-perfect marriage running a photography studio together. High school sweethearts, the Swansea-native pair met while both were students at Runnymede Collegiate Institute and, from that day forward, had eyes only for each other. “John was in Grade 13 and I was in Grade 10 when we met, and we’ve been together ever since,” Joan explained during a sit-down interview with The Guardian in the couple’s south Etobicoke home. It wasn’t long after Joan graduated, in fact, that the pair got married at St. James Presbyterian Church on Dec. 16, 1950. The wedding portrait of the beaming bride, just 18, and her proud, 20-year-old groom is one of a multitude of family photos (including childhood pictures of the couple’s brood of four: Jimmy, Johnny, Judy and Janice) adorning the Howards’ walls and shelves – and perhaps one of only a few not taken by John himself. A keen photographer since high school, John went straight to work after graduation for Kodak, where he put in five years – even writing a book for the company

– before trying his hand at commercial photography at a downtown studio. “One day, John went in and asked for a raise, and the guy said to him ‘You know more about photography than I do. Go open your own studio.’ So, we did,” Joan said with a laugh. Howard Photographic Studio opened in Etobicoke in 1954 on Westglen Crescent, where the Howards’ services ranged from portraits, wedding photography and school photos, to construction and commercial photography. “We enjoyed it,” John said. “It was a good life, and we made a hell of a good living doing it.” The crowning achievement of his career as a photographer, John said, came with being chosen to photograph the Queen at the grand open-

ing of the Scarborough Civic Centre in 1973. Looking back, Joan said her and John’s photography business not only provided their family with a great living, but also allowed them to live a great life – from adventurous outings like Joan’s first ride in a bush plane while accompanying her husband to photograph the mines of Temiscamie in northern Quebec, to capturing the toothless grins of countless Etobicoke schoolchildren in their class photos over the years. The key to their happy 64-year marriage, the Howards agreed, was that they never let a spat brew overnight and they never allowed a day to go by without exchanging ‘I love yous.’

Let’s all make volunteering our resolution L

et’s make next year a banner year in Toronto for volunteering in the community. With 2015 almost upon us, it seems like a good time to issue this call. There’s still a little bit left in 2014 to ponder goals and expectations for the coming year – and perhaps include some time to give to a cause or organization of importance to you. Also, 2015 is a big year in Toronto. The Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are coming to the city in July. It’s Canada’s largest multi-sport event. There are opportunities both before and during the Games, which will rely on some 23,000 volunteers to ensure things run smoothly. Visit the Pan Am Games website for more information. And Toronto is a city known for its diverse offerings of festivals and events. The city’s special events office our view regularly lists volunteer opporand is a good place to What can you tunities start for those who can commit do to help your their time to a specific event – as opposed to a more regular community? volunteer experience. But volunteering is not just about what’s good for a cause, an organization or the city. It’s about what’s good for us, too. When it comes to the positive developments that arise from volunteering, it is not merely a ‘one-way’ street. Volunteer opportunities represent more than just a chance to get involved in your community and help out. In many cases, volunteers acquire new skills and contacts during the course of their work. Volunteers acquire intangible benefits, too: a richer experience of life in the city and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts are helping your community. When we think about what kind of environment we want to live in, what improvements we want in our neighbourhoods and what connections we want to forge in our community, volunteering helps in all of those areas. William Osler Health Centre recently honoured seven of its volunteers who had compiled a staggering 50 years each of volunteering with its hospitals, including Etobicoke General. Let’s see what we can do in one year. Calls for volunteering – the ultimate commitment to our community – are all around us. Let’s answer the call – in greater numbers than ever.

column

Is this another chapter in library saga with budget submission? I

t’s too soon to be able to map out where all the political fights will be in the coming winter’s city hall budget process. But the Toronto Public Library Board has thrown down the gauntlet for the first big one. This shouldn’t be a surprise. There is something about our library system in this city that attracts duelling city councillors like nothing else. Last term, former budget chief Mike Del Grande instigated a minor skirmish when he wondered why so many DVDs and books were circulated in languages other than English. The same term, former budget committee vicechair Doug Ford made headlines by inventing the term lie-berry and disrespecting author Margaret Atwood, as he suggested

david nickle the city closing a library in his ward to save some money. That was a Potemkin moment for bibliophiles across the city to rise up and support their libraries. This time, the membership of the library board (most of whom were appointed under the Ford administration) is setting up for a fight that lands somewhere in between. In their 2015 budget submission, they’ve elected to include a 40 per cent reduction in security service in branches across the city. The move would save $660,000 from the budget, bringing its submission down to a two per cent increase over last year. It

would mean that in some branches, there would no longer be a security guard present. Board chair Mike Foderick maintains those branches don’t need a security guard, given their historic low level of incidents over the past number of years. For instance, at the Centennial Library branch, the security guard worked 27 hours a week in 2013, and over that year dealt with only a single incident. Perhaps there will be some library patrons comforted by that statistic. But it’s hard to imagine very many who send their children to libraries to study or their elderly parents there to read and socialize will be at all comfortable taking a chance on safety. The union representing library workers (which doesn’t, inciden-

tally, represent the security guards) has already taken a stand on the issue, as a matter of workplace safety. If I were a betting columnist, I’d say that by the time this works its way through the budget process at city hall – and long before the budget actually makes it to the floor of council – there won’t be any change in the library system’s security complement. One doesn’t know why the library board didn’t save councillors the trouble and just leave matters be. For a service that a majority of Torontonians seem to regard as untouchable, it’s astounding politicians of certain stripes can’t seem to keep their hands off it. A motorist’s dashcam video capturing a TTC bus running a red light in Scarborough has caused a stir since it was posted online. This week, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross promised a full investigation into the incident, which took place the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 13. The video shows a TTC bus traveling eastbound on Eglinton Avenue East pass right through the intersection at Warden Avenue, after the light has turned red. Ross said the video, which has been viewed over 6,000 times since it was posted on YouTube, could lead to disciplinary measures. pUSH ON TO INSTALL PRESTO ACROSS TTC Include the mayor in a vocal group of influential types seeking more Presto on the TTC. the audience who had gathered at Runnymede United Church. “I’ve asked city council to advise mediation.” More than 60 people have agreed to register as participants at the hearing. Save Our Village is encouraging anyone who is interested to register. The goal is to have 100 people attend the hearing. “It looks really good if you’ve got a full room,”

Doucette said. Save Our Village has raised more than $30,000 of its $40,000 goal with the help of donations from local residents. The community’s lawyer and planner are in the midst of building a case against the developer. “We truly are for respectable development,” said the BWVRA’s Krista Wylie, who said ideally Save Our Village

would like to work with the developer so that the proposal reflects the community – rather than fight it at the OMB. The encroachment on the Swansea neighbourhood was a bone of contention for the majority of residents who attended the meeting. The developer is proposing to tear down the first residential home south of Bloor Street

West on Durie Street. The proposal, said Steve Dewdney of the BWVRA, does not meet several of the city’s mid-rise guidelines. “What is responsible midrise development? (A building) that reflects community input, that balances the need for intensification with the limitations of existing infrastructure, roads, schools, TTC,” Dewdney said. “It

improves overall livability.” Tim Lowman, president of the Old Mill Community Association, called the proposed development “just an oversized, out of context eyesore.” “We want respectable development in the right place,” said the councillor.

Milczyn said his bill would “kick off” that process. “It will start debate and discussion and put a concrete proposal on the table that is well thought out that Toronto and other municipalities would like to see coming into place,” Milczyn said in an interview. Last year, Milczyn led Toronto’s process to develop a response to the Ontario government’s consultation on Planning Act reforms as chair of Toronto’s planning growth management committee. Milczyn sat on the city committee for 14 years. Toronto City Council unanimously endorsed a series of positions upon which his bill was built, Milczyn said. Toronto’s Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat and Kerri Voumvakis, the city’s director of strategic initiatives, policy and analysis, assisted in forming positions that held common ground with other municipalities, Milczyn said in his remarks to the House. Under the bill, municipally initiated Official Plan Amendments, and zoning bylaws that implement them, and approved site-specific zoning bylaws, once passed, would no longer be subject to appeal to the OMB for a period of five years. Humberside grad medals at first senior World cup event Toronto Speed Skating Club’s William Preudhomme earns bronze in Shanghai, competes this weekend in Seoul NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Humberside Collegiate grad William Preudhomme’s trip to Shanghai last weekend with Canada’s short track speed skating team involved a number of auspicious firsts. First appearance with the senior national team and perhaps most thrilling his first medal in senior international competition. He is also a trailblazer with his Toronto Speed Skating Club, marking its first member to make it to the national senior team. Preudhomme picked up the bronze medal in the 500metre event on Sunday, Dec. 14 at the third stop on the World Cup tour. He finished third in the final in 41.311 seconds, behind Russia’s Dmitry Migunov (40.702) and JohnHenry Krueger of the United States (40.799). He had to do it the hard

way, qualifying for the final through last chance repechage heats on Sunday after being disqualified from his opening heat on Friday. “It was a really long day (Sunday), but I’m really happy with how things went,” said Preudhomme, in a press release on the Speed Skating Canada website. “After not doing so well in the 500-metres on Friday, I knew I had to redeem myself. Making a couple of best times gave me confidence. The final was a fast race, but I hung with it and ended up third.” He will do it all again this weekend as the Canadian team moves on to the fourth World Cup stop in Seoul Dec. 19 to 21. Like so many athletes aspiring to national or professional teams, an injury to a veteran teammate created the opportunity for the 21-yearold elite athlete who grew playing house league hockey at Rennie Rink with the

Swansea Hockey Association and attended Swansea public school. “I got called (by the national team) because I did the World Cup selections

and I was the next substitute to go and one of the other skaters actually injured his foot and so I got called up a week-and-a-half ago,” he said, in a phone interview

from Montreal just prior to leaving with the national team. He is now living in Montreal where he attends Concordia University and trains with the national team. “Since it is my first senior competition my goal is to learn as much as I can from the other skaters because skating internationally and skating in Canada are two completely different things,” he said. “I’m one of the younger ones on the team and one of the younger ones at the competition, so just mostly just learn from the older guys.” He does have experience at the junior level, representing Canada at the 2013 world junior championships in Warsaw which marked his first international assignment. The one-time house league hockey player was inspired to take up the sport as he entered his teen years, in

part, from “watching the 2006 Torino Olympics.” With hockey, he conceded, “I was fast but not very skilled ...” With speed skating, he explained, “I just thought that it looked cool, I did a Google search, found the Toronto club and went and joined.” He proved to be a quick study, getting good fast. “I love the speed, and the community in speed skating is so friendly.” Preudhomme said his cracking the national team “feels awesome” and he hopes it will inspire others coming up behind him in the club. “One of the best parts about it is that we have a lot of young, developing skaters at the club that are all just getting to the provincial circuit and the national circuit and I feel like I’m a real good role model for them.”

Day takes inspiration from online dating >>>from page 1 Great Canadian Laugh Off winner. She, alongside comic Dom Pare, a Border City Comedy Competition winner, will fight for comedic supremacy. Day, a Toronto native, describes her comedy style as “a little bit silly, pretty dirty.” “It’s pretty smart and pretty sexy,” she said. Every time she takes the stage, there’s “an addictive

quality.” Day says she loves the immediate gratification. In the first two years of stand-up comedy, Day said she had to fight a lot of nerves. Now, the butterflies aren’t so strong, but it’s all part of comedy’s appeal, she said. So far, the comic hasn’t ventured much beyond performing throughout Toronto. Toronto audiences, Day said, can be a little standoffish. “It seems like people are

more interested in the personal stuff not punch lines and hack material,” she said. “They want comedians to talk more about yourself, what’s going on in your brain.” When asked what she thought made a person a good comedian, Day said thick skin and confidence. “You have to have the love for it; you have to project a kind of confidence on stage that makes the audience think you’re not going to fall

apart.” It helps too, if you’ve got a good sense of what you think is funny, an ability to read the audience, she added. Day said right now, she’s drawing on her online dating experience. She also writes a blog about it. To find out more about Day, visit her website amandaday.net

Police return to High Park Avenue stabbing scene to reassure residents As part of its investigation into a stabbing death at an apartment building on High Park Avenue, police visited the complex Sunday to further canvass and reassure residents. Police have identified the victim as Musa Yusuf, 52, of Toronto. He is the city’s 56th homicide of 2014. Officers were called to 100 High Park Ave. Tuesday, Dec. 9, around 8:40 p.m. where they discov-

ered Yusuf with multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police say the alleged suspect was found a few kilometres from the scene. Guled Yusuf, 22, is the victim’s nephew. He was charged with second-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. About a dozen officers went

door-to-door, room-to-room, speaking with the hundreds of residents to bring back a sense of calm, 11 Division Supt. Heinz Kuck told reporters Sunday in a press conference outside the apartment building. Officers distributed a letter outlining the details of the case to this point. “This is a good community. There are strong, hardworking, decent people and this is an isolated, one-off

incident,” Kuck said. Oftentimes, homicide victims are forgotten and reduced to simply a number, said Kuck. “Mr. Yusuf does have a name, he does have a face,” said the unit commander. “We’re doing this for him, we’re doing this for his family and we’re doing it for the community.” Det. Sgt. Deb Harr is described Yusuf as a “hard-

working, contributing member of the community,” who, “loved his family.” Not only were officers there to support the apartment building’s residents, but to also appeal to them for further information. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Doucette shared her thoughts alongside police offering her condolences to the Yusuf family. “We do live in one of the

safest neighbourhoods in the city. We have heard that constantly. So, when something tragic like this happens it its all of us,” said the councillor. “I really do want to thank 11 Division for coming out today for knocking on every door, to reassure residents that this was a tragedy, but it was a one-off tragedy.” Have information? Contact police 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-2228477.
