Seven-year-old Kate had an extra special request for Santa this year. “I want Santa to save our fire station,” said the little girl, one of several children who stood outside the Runnymede fire hall last Thursday evening holding signs that read, ‘I Love Firefighters,’ ‘Please Keep Our Fire Hall Open’ and ‘We Need Fire Station no. 424.’ The kids were the first to arrive at a rally organized by MacGregor Avenue residents to highlight the building’s importance to the safety, heritage and community of the local area. The fire station is facing potential closure in January because of City of Toronto budget constraints. Indeed, the local firefighters received a particularly urgent call the night before when they were called to a house on Lincoln Avenue to deliver a baby, said Damien Walsh, vice-
president of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association. “I think it’s a fantastic thing that the community is involved here,” said Walsh. Laura Fenwick, one of the organizers of the rally and a resident of MacGregor Avenue, said having the fire station close by is a godsend. “It’s been an unbelievable thing. There’s peace of mind knowing there’s help nearby,” she said. Her two kids, ages two and seven, are regular visitors to the station. “It’s one of the top stations in the city for education because there are seven schools within proximity,” said Fenwick. The firefighters are regular visitors to area street parties, she added. “It’s a loss on so many levels, a loss of peace of mind. It’s a treasured part of our community. We depend on it. It’s critical to our friends and neighbours. They’re the first ones there in an emergency,” Fenwick said.
Windermere United brings Christmas cheer to families LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Windermere United Church congregation and its partners are ensuring that this Christmas is an extra special one for as many as eight local families. They have raised more than $2,000 to purchase gifts for both individuals and families within the neighbourhood. “We forget that this neighbourhood, although it’s affluent, has pockets that aren’t,” said Minister Alexa Gilmour. Windermere United Church has
had a tradition of helping people over the years. Throughout its history, it has had an Out-of-the-Cold and clothing depot. As it grows, the church is looking more and more at ways it can meet both the physical and spiritual needs of people in Toronto. “We know we can’t do it alone and this year we are partnering with some fabulous individuals and groups to make this season brighter for some of our friends in Toronto,” said Gilmour. “We hope the current relationships will grow and others will partner with us in the future. It is a pretty heartening experience to
be a part of.” To be a part of Windermere United Church’s congregation, one does not need to attend Sunday morning service, stressed Gilmour. “You can partner with us in other ways,” she said. holiday baskets Most of the Christmas baskets they put together were by “generous, compassionate” congregants, but they had help from a local store manager, who was inspired by Windermere’s efforts. She created a basket for a local family. As did the
local moms’ group, Mom Vet. The Swansea chapter of the group is 20 mothers strong, according to one mom, Heather Chiavegato. “As a group, we decided to do the gift baskets as we wanted to help local families in some way. This is our second year doing the baskets,” said Chiavegato. C&G (Comics and Gaming) Magazine donated Nintendo games for one of the families with three children. Creating the baskets is just one piece of the puzzle. Delivering them is just as important. Emmanuel Howard Park United Church’s West End Angels Outreach
program, which serves 11,000 meals a year to people in need, will take on that role along with Light Patrol, an organization that visits and supports the needs of street youth. Windermere is supporting its initiative Operation Good Thing to put sleeping bags, ground sheets, restaurant gift cards, hats and gloves into a duffel bag and into the hands of a youth on the street this winter. In addition to the gift baskets, there are little wrapped packages of toiletries and candy. They will be blessed at this Sunday’s church service before going out to the families, said Gilmour.

t may be green. It may even be warm. But warm weather won’t change the true spirit of the Christmas season. On the front page of The Bloor West Villager and the eight other Toronto Community News newspapers we publish our view today, we feature a seasonal piece of art with a local connection. We must The holiday season is underencourage way and we thought featuring good works from the community would be a welcome change from artisans’ efforts tough issues, tough headlines. You can see the complete set of art from our front page photos in our online photo gallery found at bit.ly/TCN_holidayart You will see snow scenes. Stained glass. Classic and contemporary art. You will quickly see this community is rich in artistic talent and that our artists have a flair for understanding and reflecting the neighbourhoods of Toronto. Artists offer the same kind of experience as a newspaper. An artist chronicles a special place at a special time – and you can refer to that piece of work far into the future. A photo, a story or a piece of art can convey our history, our culture, our past, present or future. It’s fascinating how the warmth of a piece of art can melt the cold of a true winter day. To all of our readers, our online users, our advertiser partners and all community members, we wish you the best of the holiday season. Whether a Christian celebrating Christmas or not, this season offers time and opportunity to reflect on all that is accomplished, and offers the chance for us all to take steps to make the year ahead even better. In this space on the page, we often charge or challenge people to do something – and try to send a message you won’t see in other publications. Today, we’d like to challenge you during the year to buy a work of local art. We all need to encourage the efforts of our community’s artisans. That one small purchase, supports a local artist – and turns you automatically into a community builder. That piece of local art can be enjoyed by you, or give a whole younger generation a view of what was important to their ancestors’ culture, life and community. Encourage the artists. And keep the spirit of the season alive in their continued good works. newsroom
Council has never seen a year like 2012
T
here has never been a more interesting year in the history of amalgamated Toronto council than 2012, and that’s saying something. Toronto, after all, has had some interesting times in its short history since megacity amalgamation took effect at the start of 1998. We’ve lived through epic corruption scandals, high comedy from goofball mayors, endless battles with the provincial and federal governments, riots and mass arrests, and stinky, stinky garbage strikes. But 2012? You have outdone yourself, o waning year. The one interesting thing that didn’t happen this year was a garbage strike, and that’s something. But over the past 12 months, it has been a wild, realityshow-worthy ride: Toronto has seen nothing less than a seismic shift of power and influence away from a mayor who was just two years ago elected with a very powerful mandate. Mayor Rob Ford’s fall from grace, such as it was, was a constant narrative through the year – and not just because we scribes

made it so. The year began on an optimistic note, as the mayor and his brother, Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford, started on what seemed like an easy, humanizing and healthful project, to drop a few pounds (well, 50) over six months. The mayor’s faltering diet and exercise regime would become an all-to-apt metaphor for his faltering control of council. In the early months of 2012, councillors took matters into their own hands. The 2012 budget was re-made on the floor of council, to the mayor’s chagrin. And council didn’t stop there, voting to kill Ford’s dream of a subway to Scarborough and restore the light rail transit plan that he’d campaigned against. One could go on all column about the indignities that council heaped
on the mayor’s office. But at least half of the fun of this reality show of a year comes from the mayor himself. As early as February, Ford sowed the seeds of what might be his political downfall, when he spoke and voted on an integrity commissioner report demanding he repay $3,150 in donations to his football charity. As a result, Ford finishes the year awaiting an appeal of a judge’s ruling that will see him removed from office if it’s upheld. In between February and today, the mayor’s been called to the carpet for reading while driving, chasing a reporter, and skipping council meetings to coach high school football. In 2013, all of this could culminate in something even more interesting: a mid-term mayoral byelection, in which Toronto voters are asked to come in and pronounce judgement on the wild, precipitous year that’s just now passing. n D a v i d Ni c k l e i s T h e Villager’s city hall columnist. To the editor: Many municipalities have grown organically over the past decades and have clearly evolved into different business models today since downloading (of provincial services), none more than Toronto. This has left residents with a dilemma any time we require an interaction with the city for a service. Who do you call and what do you do when you don’t get any response or are not happy with the response? Councillor Sarah Doucette again had a super town hall meeting Nov. 22 to introduce the city’s integrity commissioner and ombudsman. The situation painted by the ombudsman was not encouraging except the results of the complaints in terms of her recommendations have been adopted by council and, in her words, her focus is to identify and recommend “systemic changes” to the way council assesses the processes used by staff and influence change. Needless to say, this takes monumental effort if the root cause is not changed. My sense is council is so immersed in the squeaky wheel to recognize the work they do will continue to have “diminishing returns” no matter how monumentally they struggle to keep the services viable. I am not the first person to suggest it’s time for residents to give a clear strong message of ‘fix-it’ – and for us to be serious about prioritizing the services residents need, defining the money we want to spend on each service through the budget process. In effect, the city’s management process and therefore service management is broken. This is not new. OHIP had to contend with delisting services and will continue to do this. Only residents can force change as those within the squeaky wheel become the mice peddling as fast as they can. Steve Ralphs

The design incorporates curved pathways bordered by a low tapered wall to prevent people from cutting across the garden spaces. There is a grove of trees on the west side of the
space, which allows for the view to be maintained, and a larger tree for shade at the south east corner. The species of trees and types of grass and plantings in the garden will be identified at the detailed design stage of the project. The pathways will be wide enough to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs.

The curvature of the pathways in the proposed Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden are like extending a warm embrace to the community, said Jennifer Mahoney with NAK Design Strategies. The proposed design was unveiled to area residents at a recent meeting at Fern Avenue Public School in Roncesvalles Village. “It is a simple garden plan with some heritage and some public art,” Mahoney said. “But I must say it was surprising what we could do with such a small space.” The design, created by locally based NAK Design Strategies, took into consideration input from a number of community meetings as well as the restrictions of the concrete triangle immediately south of where Roncesvalles Avenue and Dundas Street West connect. “The two main messages we heard, were because of this intersection’s location (the garden) should act as a gateway to the village,” Mahoney said during the Dec. 12 meeting. “And most people wanted somewhere they could
A memorial plaque at the northern entrance to the Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden will tell the story of the origin of Dundas Street. This portion of Dundas Street was constructed as a military road for the defense of York, the capital of Upper Canada, in 1812. Aboriginal warriors attempted to ward off the landing of the American fleet in April 1813. The garden would honour the men who built the road as well as those warriors. The proposed garden would be part of the 1812 Binational Peace Garden Trail network, a crossborder tourism initiative connected with the international peace garden foundation, which mark the sites – and tell the stories – of the War of 1812. Mahoney said the design will be refined and submitted for approval by the city early in the New Year. Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden Project Coordinator Abby Bushby said the group will hold a meeting to plan fundraising activities in January. The earliest start date for construction would be in the fall of 2013.

Theatre group brings the arts to the community LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bloorcourt-area residents are getting an early Christmas gift this year and it comes in the form of local theatre. The Red One Theatre has staked its claim on a storefront at 955 Bloor St. W., near Ossington Avenue. But in typical fashion, the collective is
launching Dec. 22 with the aim of bringing new life to the neighbourhood through the power of art, culture and community. “The community is really amazing,” said spokesperson Stacey-Lee Turner. “It’s got so much potential.” The space had sat empty for a long time – until a founding member of the collective, Benjamin Blais, who
lives in the area, came across the storefront and was inspired. “He thought it’d be a great place for a theatre so we arranged to take temporary occupancy for two months,” said Turner. “It’ll act as an artist venue.” Anyone can approach the collective with an idea for a music event, show or lecture – “anything, really,”
said Turner. A launch event will take place on Dec. 22, in association with the Bloorcourt Business Improvement Area (BIA). The Red One Theatre will be making an announcement about its flagship production in the New Year during the launch. “If it’s successful, we’ll extend our occupancy,” said Turner. “What we

Family brings Christmas to those in hospital over holidays LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Her family’s visit to St. Joseph’s Health Centre every year on Christmas Eve sums up the holidays for Jane Watson. This year, she, her husband, two daughters, one of her sisters and niece will be visiting as many as 400 patients stuck in hospital for Christmas. They’ll go room to room visiting each and every patient, giving them a small gift, smiles and some conversation. In recent years, a choir accompanied them after a St. Joe’s nurse was inspired by Watson’s efforts, she asked if she and the singers could join the family. “It adds so much to it,” said Watson. The patients are so overwhelmed by such a small token. “Every year, someone will tell me that this is the only gift they’ll get. I think some of them feel they’re being forgotten,” she said. Project Hope was founded by a good friend of Watson’s,

Ann Ferron. Ferron had been delivering gifts to patients at St. Michael’s Hospital and Toronto General Hospital for several years. When Ferron moved to Arizona, Watson decided to continue her friend’s efforts. For Watson, she knew she wanted to make a difference at St. Joe’s. More than a decade ago, her six-week-old son William Thomas was rushed to its emergency department where he passed away.
“(Project Hope) is such a loving way to honour our son,” Watson told The Villager. Project Hope has become a Christmas Eve tradition for the Royal York Road and Bloor Street West woman and her family. They’ll start around 10 a.m. on Christmas Eve day. It’ll take them a couple of hours to deliver the gifts. They’ll leave a bag of gifts in the ER too. “Last year, we were able to visit patients there. We wore gowns, masks and gloves – as long as it was safe for them,” she said. AnnMarie Marcolin, manager of patient, family and community engagement, says she has been very fortunate to have been able to assist Watson and family over the past nine years. “I witness the impact they have on the patients. And, to be able to see when they hand the gift to the patient – they don’t exclude any area. They go everywhere in the entire hospital. The reaction is a tremendous amount of joy,” said Marcolin.

Artist explains inspiration behind painting Bloor West Village-based artist Les Tait’s painting, “First Freeze,” depicts a game of pick-up hockey on a frozen Grenadier Pond. Tait, a Beresford Avenue resident, can credit a neighbour of his for the inspiration behind the painting. “Steve Dryden, a neighbour down the road, he said, ‘I was just running by Catfish Pond (a.k.a Grenadier Pond) and saw a kid playing hockey – you oughta go down there and paint that.’ So I jumped on my bike and went down there. Of course the kid was gone, but I loved the image,” Tait told The Villager. “So, I kept going down there and watching families and kids skating on the pond.” Tait said he took as many as 300 photographs of the pond, various pictures of the frozen rink and its skaters, before putting brush to canvas. “After the first freeze, the ice is rally smooth. The conditions are excellent,” he said. Tait merged several different families and different times to create the painting, applying creative license to the picture. GTA realtors release monthly resale housing figures for Nov. Greater Toronto Area realtors reported 5,793 sales in November 2012 – down by 16 per cent compared to November 2011. “Transactions have been down on a year-over-year basis since June, after being up substantially in the last half of 2011 and the first half of 2012. Some buyers pulled forward their decision to purchase, which has impacted sales levels in the second half of 2012,” says Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Ann Hannah. “Stricter mortgage lending guidelines, including a reduced maximum amortization period and a purchase price ceiling of one-million dollars for government insured mortgages, have prompted some buyers to move to the sidelines,” continued Ms. Hannah. The average selling price was up by 1.6 per cent annually to

$485,328. The MLS Home Price Index Composite Benchmark was up by 4.6 per cent over last year. “The moderate annual rate of price growth compared to previous months was largely due to a different mix in detached home sales this year compared to last, particularly in the City of Toronto. The share of detached homes that sold for over one-million dollars was down substantially, which influenced the overall average price,” says Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “The MLS HPI detached benchmark price, which tracks the price for a home with the same attributes over time, was up by almost six per cent in Toronto, suggesting that market conditions for low-rise homes remain quite tight despite a changing mix of sales.” – TREB

A 2 0 - ye a r- o l d we s t Toronto resident who won a few track and field medals while going to Runnymede Junior and Senior Public School and tossed a few wins while pitching baseball for Humberside Collegiate continues to add to his totals as the Ontario Hockey League’s all-time leader in wins. JP Anderson, who is suiting up for his fifth and final year in the OHL with the Sarnia Sting, added another pair of wins this past weekend – 7-4 over Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday and 4-2 over Guelph Storm Friday – to extend his record-setting win total to 117. He earned his recordsetting 115th win the previous weekend, in a 4-1 win over Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sunday, Dec. 9. Anderson came out of the Toronto Marlboros
organization and played one year in tier two junior with the St. Michael’s Buzzers. He came over to the Sting last year after four years with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. Signed as a free agent by the San Jose Sharks, his nearly completed OHL resume is pretty impressive. impressive record Through the first 29 games this season he sports a regular season record of 17 wins and 9 losses with a goalsagainst average of 2.91 and a save percentage of 0.912. Lifetime through 197 games he’s 117-64 with a goals-against average of .275 and a save percentage of .907. The Sting’s next action is Friday, Dec. 28, hosting Brampton Battalion.
