FROM THROWING AXES TO WRITING ABOUT FAMILY’S WORST FEARS, REPORTER REFLECTS ON STORIES FROM THE LAST YEAR Writer Lisa Rainford shares her first-hand accounts from the field
missing woman found
I have three sisters so I could only imagine what Eva Szeman went through last winter when her sister, Judy, 41, went missing. She disappeared on a Tuesday morning in January. The resident of High Park Manor located across from High Park was last seen in Mississauga where she had stopped in at her family’s home on the way to a job interview.

he coolest story I wrote this year has to be about axe throwing. Yeah, I know. I didn’t know it was a thing either. Yet, I discovered this summer axethrowing leagues are popping up, not only around the Greater Toronto Area, but across the country. Matt Wilson is the founder of the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL), whose home base can be found on Sterling Avenue, just south of Bloor Street West. He insisted I give it a try and was kind enough to give me some pointers as we chatted about how he started the league and how it has grown since its inception. It’s way tougher than it looks – and he makes it look pretty effortless. It took me several embarrassing throws before my axe actually made contact with the bull’s-eye . And, then it simply hit the boards and fell off. It didn’t help that I was wearing platform sandals – not high ones, but still. I was determined to puncture the bull’s-eye. And when I did, what a rush it was. I can see how the sport (yes, it is) can be addictive. Wilson told me it’s a “big mental game,” and I don’t disagree. Clockwise from top: Reporter Lisa Rainford gives it her best go at the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL); winning Davenport Liberal candidate Julie Dzerowicz, left, cheers as election night polls come in with support from Ward 17 Toronto Councillor Cesar Palacio; and Eva Szeman (foreground) is seen with friends holding posters of her missing sister Judy.
Judy lives with schizophrenia and her sister believed she wasn’t taking her medication and had no means of financially supporting herself. I felt an obligation to help this family. Writing a story – or what turned into three stories – was the least I could do. I wanted to be as gentle as possible in my conversations with Eva and with the words I wrote. I put myself in her position when I spoke with her in
the park before she and friends went searching for Judy. Although the search did not unearth any further clues, Judy did turn up two months to the day she disappeared – healthy and safe. She was in Hamilton. Eva described feeling elated. I hate to admit it, but I was surprised. So many of these kinds of stories do not have a happy end. It felt good to report it. That’s one of the big reasons I like writing community news
– for the most part, it is good news. Read the full story here: http://bit.ly/1Oc7ky5
ELECTION NIGHT
I love election night. Okay, I kind of love/hate it. It’s a lot of hurry up and wait. The anticipation is killer. And, I was sure the NDP’s Andrew Cash would be re-elected MP in Davenport. Well, pretty sure. Like, kind of sure. So I parked myself at his
election night headquarters. Lula Lounge, far earlier than I needed to and waited for the results to roll in. To my surprise, Liberal Julie Dzerowicz pulled ahead immediately. I was sitting with a photographer from NOW magazine and we watched the results come in on Twitter on her phone. As ridings across Canada turned red one after another, and Dzerowicz remained in the lead, I decided to jump in a cab and hightail it to her campaign party headquarters at the Casa Das Beiras Cultural Community Centre. I still wondered if I was doing the right thing – it was still relatively early. Anything could happen. The community centre was pretty quiet when I arrived, all things considered. Liberal supporters were glued to the TV screen. It seemed to take forever for Dzerowicz to be declared winner. When she was and she finally arrived, she seemed to shake with happiness. I wanted her to get to the front of the room already for her victory speech, but of course there were so many people who wanted to shake her hand or give her a hug. Turns out the microphone wasn’t working and I was worried my phone wouldn’t be able to record Dzerowicz’s speech. I pounced on her as soon as she was finished before anyone else could grab her to ask additional questions. I then found myself a quiet corner in a stairwell to call my editor to file quotes for that night’s online story. Read the full story here: http://bit.ly/1PaZMPx

Many of the landscapes MacKeown is known for are inspired by the scenery of Southern Ontario. Her paintings show impressionistic imagery, bold strokes and a striking use of colour. MacKeown has exhibited her paintings at a number of solo and group shows in the Toronto area and her watercolour paintings have won numerous awards. Her paintings can be found in collections locally, nationally and internationally. MacKeown is a member of Humber Valley Art Club, Neilson Park Creative Centre, The Art Tour and Associate Member of Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. oday is Christmas Eve and we’re hoping our readers are able to slow things down a bit and start enjoying some holiday time with family and friends. Though we’re sure there will still be lots of last-minute shoppers rushing around this afternoon and early evening getting the final perfect gifts, and we wish them luck, the holiday season is when residents would do well to step back from the hustle and bustle of their busy daily lives and find some time to focus on what’s really important to them. Spending time with loved ones, whether they be immediate family or not, is such a valuable thing; and for anyone with children, it is the best gift that can be given. Those who observe Christmas, either as a religious or secular celebration, and those who don’t, and everyone our view of all faiths or none can certainly use the fact that school is Give the gift closed and statutory holidays of time during are taking place to spread some cheer and just plain have some the holidays fun with those who are closest to them. For many, that will mean family gatherings over the next few days, while for others it’s the chance to hit the Boxing Day sales or spend an afternoon or evening at the movies. In Toronto, there’s never a shortage of activities to take part in over the holidays and most of them are very family friendly. And there’s also no need to spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself with family and friends over the next few days. Lots of events, such as skating at one of the city’s many rinks, are free of charge and a great way to enjoy the season – though this year’s warm and wet weather is taking a bit of an edge off traditional winter activities such as tobogganing and skiing. The milder temperatures, though, open the door to other outdoor activities such as a walk through one of Toronto’s many parks, ravines or along the waterfront. Also, a visit to the zoo or a petting farm is always a fun family activity at this time of year. On Boxing Day, the Toronto Zoo hosts its annual Treats Walk for the animals. If you’re looking to find some other fun activities in Toronto over the holidays, you can visit us online at www.insidetoronto.com and click on our events calendar.

Tory succeeds in restoring professionalism to Toronto It’s unlikely that 2015 could have been anything other than what was at Toronto City Hall: a lengthy period of detoxification from the awful years leading up to it. At the beginning of the year that was, Mayor John Tory and Toronto council may have had a lot of very practical tasks ahead of them, but the one that mattered for most of us was maybe the simplest: to restore a sense of professionalism, consideration and, dare we say it, sobriety, to the business of municipal public life. Those of us whose job it was to report on this place heard it again and again, at parties where a year earlier conversation would shift around to questions about the fascinatingly terrible circus that was the Rob Ford administration. In 2015, all anyone wanted to hear was that the new mayor was as dull, wellmannered and moderate as he appeared on television. It was a low bar, and with
david nickle the city a few notable exceptions, Tory and Toronto council were able to meet and exceed it. There was some trouble at the Licensing and Standards Committee, where newcomer Councillor Jim Karygiannis and veteran trouble-maker Giorgio Mammoliti raised a ruckus about the taxi industry. But generally, city hall business proceeded with shaky caution. There was a bit more trouble with the 2015 budget, when Tory learned that a good relationship with Premier Kathleen Wynne didn’t mean as much as he’d hoped, and city finance staff scrambled to balance the budget in the face of an unexpected download of social housing costs. But it all worked out, at least for now. There were few serious
battles at council. The Gardiner Expressway’s future was one of those. The question of whether to tear it down in the east or build a new elevated highway was debated, and the mayor – who wanted that new highway – prevailed narrowly. After, he sat down with opponents to see what could be done to mollify them. It’s ended if not happily, then at least peaceably. There might have been more trouble had Tory decided to get behind a bid for the Olympics, in the wake of a stint at hosting the Pan Am Games. Previous mayors might have been tempted by the promise of Olympic gold, and we could tell Tory was thinking about it. But in the end, the steady hand prevailed and we let the bid go. There was enough sensible and mundane work to be done already, without that distracting excitement. There might’ve been some fun fighting over the prospects of jets at Billy
Bishop Airport, but that was shut down by the new federal government, who made it clear they had no interest in opening the tripartite agreement on the waterfront, and that a longsimmering debate about jets was now over. There were few tears shed at our post-traumatic city hall. By the end of this so very peaceful year, everyone was relaxed enough that Tory could drop what otherwise would have been a bomb, and announce he was going to ask council to add a property tax levy for infrastructure. It landed with barely a muffled thud. Maybe we were all just too distracted, watching Donald Trump climb in the polls to the south of us – and understanding, maybe like nobody else, just how that sort of thing can turn out.

Group sponsors Syrian family Hope and Shelter holds first fundraiser at Humber Cinema LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A group of university friends have banded together under the name Hope and Shelter to make a difference in one Syrian refugee family’s life. The group is hosting its first official fundraiser, a family movie event, at the Humber Cinema, Sunday. The theatre will screen the film Alvin and the Chipmunks 4 (Road Chip) at 10 a.m. All proceeds from the $14 tickets will go towards helping a Syrian refugee family settle in Canada. The group’s goal is to raise $30,000 to help set up basic housing and support for the family’s first 12 months here. Swansea resident Keethai Tharmaseelan and her husband decided to ask their friends, who all went to university together, if they wanted to get together in support of a refugee family. “We started talking about
it in early November,” Tharmaseelan said. “It’s hard to navigate through all the government paperwork.” To find out what it entailed, the group researched what its responsibility was. “I’m a teacher in ESL (English as a Second Language). I know what the services are for new immigrants, but I wasn’t sure if it was different for refugees.” humanity first is helping The group is working with Humanity First, a humanitarian relief organization that’s helping Hope and Shelter to sponsor and resettle the family. As well, through the partnership, any financial donations made to Hope and Shelter are tax deductible. The core group of seven that comprises Hope and Shelter, alongside volunteers, are in the midst of collecting donations, both financial
and otherwise. As of the last week, they had almost $5,000 towards their total goal. They expect to be matched with a family soon. Until then, they are talking about the next potential fundraisers. Jenny McMinn, another Swansea area resident, is a yoga instructor, and is looking to host a series of fundraising yoga classes. As well, the group is toying with the idea of presenting some kind of music event in Toronto. Mc Mi n n s a i d i t w a s Tharmaseelan who inspired her to get involved. “She’s a forceful lady. I t ’s a g i f t t h a t No r t h Runnymede United Church congregants hope they’ll never have to use. York South-Weston MPP Laura Albanese, in partnership with the Insurance Bureau of Canada, helped to deliver an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the Runnymede Road and St. Clair Avenue West-area church Monday morning. “We’re so happy to have it,” said Charles Gregory, a North Runnymede Road United Church board member. “Most
Because of the quickthinking parishioners and the arrival of emergency crews, she survived and recovered. “She was at church two weeks later,” Rev. Kathryn Ariss-Pater said. Years before that, Gregory said, a man collapsed during a Sunday night service. If it wasn’t for the skill of another congregant, a nurse, the out-
come could have been dire. Partly because of these incidents, Gregory sought the MPP’s help in securing an AED for the church. The church is connected to the Syme Senior Centre, which sees hundreds of people through its doors each week. The AED will serve the church congregation, and visitors to the centre.

Next year will mark the final full year the TTC will sell its monthly Metropasses as the transit commission prepares to switch its fare system to the Presto card. To commemorate this milestone, the TTC will sell special passes all through next year, each of which promises to be adorned with an iconic city image. What’s more, all 12 monthly passes can be combined to form one unified image. The Metropass debuted in 1980 and cost $26 for one month. Now it’s $141.50 – by far the most expensive travel pass of its kind in North America.

Abandoned dog gets new home LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com
Photo/COURTESY
This Great Dane-bullmastiff cross was discovered on a west end porch. He was not neutered and didn’t have a collar or tags.
A Great Dane-bullmastiff cross thought to be abandoned and discovered on a homeowner’s porch in Bloor West now has a new home and a new name. Maura Mohan, a veterinary assistant at The Jane Animal Hospital, who first took care of the dog after Brenda Morgan and her daughter, Jordan, brought it to the clinic Dec. 11, has adopted him. “I spent the day with him and fell in love with him,” said Mohan, a Beach resident. Christened Murphy, the dog now shares a home with Mohan’s seven-year-old yellow lab, Hannah.
Hannah paid a visit to the vet clinic near Jane and Annette streets to meet Murphy before he joined his new friend at home. He has since been for walks along the boardwalk in the Beach and Mohan said he has been for swims in Lake Ontario. After being dropped off at The Jane Animal Hospital, Murphy was taken to Toronto Animal Services South Shelter as is protocol, Mohan said. He stayed there for five days as staff searched for his owner. Murphy’s previous owners never came forward. “Now he will have a good life with Maura and her other dog,” Morgan said in an email Tuesday.

Nurses protest job cuts at Runnymede LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Registered Practical Nurses and support workers braved chilly temperatures last Friday afternoon to stage an information picket to raise awareness of the significant job cuts expected at Runnymede Healthcare Centre. The information picket, a collaboration between SEIU Healthcare, Canada’s health-care union, and the Ontario Nurses Association, brought together Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Ward Aids (WAs), who carried signs that said, ‘Stop the Cuts’, ‘Together We Stand’, and ‘Stand up for Justice.’ Runnymede Healthcare Centre plans to eliminate 10 full-time RPNs, 14 part-time RPNs, and three part-
time and five full-time WAs “in order to streamline patients services and enhance the patient/client experience,” SEIU spokesperson Richard Saladziak said. “It has nothing to do with budgetary issues. We feel there is something inherently wrong with how Runnymede is managed. The CEO makes with benefits in excess of $450,000 a year,” he said. “It flies in the face of reason as to why these cuts are taking place. The hospital had an 8.5 per cent surplus last year.” The hospital is not doing its duediligence as to why these cuts are really necessary, Saladziak said. The job cuts will decrease the caregiver to patient ratio in the 200-plus bed health centre, he added. A five-month layoff notice has gone out to hospital employees.
“People are upset,” WA Judy Ann Moore said. “Patients will suffer a great deal. Families are asking, ‘What’s the purpose of these cuts?’” Friday’s information picket was the first of its kind to be held with several more scheduled. Earlier this year, the hospital announced it was introducing a “new model” of care it says will be more efficient and effective, in response to the impending job cuts. “The organization is introducing a new nursing care model that is built on the foundation of patient-centred care, professional accountability, supportive practice and staff leadership, which will enable staff to function to their full scope of practice,” Raj Sewda, chief nursing executive and privacy officer at Runnymede hospital, said in an email.
