Junction residents aim to create new community space
rise and shine
Goal of Junction Commons Project to turn former station into community hub LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A group of dedicated Junction residents have banded together in an effort to transform the dilapidated 11 Division police station into a community hub. Coined the Junction Commons Project, the end goal is to create a space where area residents can meet, work, play and participate in various community activities. Ensuring that all residents have a voice and are able to work together, its aim is to strengthen the neighbourhood. The wish-list includes a multi-functional space for art proj-
ects, such as visual arts, storytelling, performance, theatre, music and dance; a community kitchen and community garden, among many other ideas. Deserted since officers moved into their new state-of-the-art facility on Davenport Road in September 2011, the old city-owned, 25,000square foot, Mavety Street station has remained empty. “The building is in limbo right now. As of that date, the city put (the building) out to all its departments to see if anyone wanted it,” explained Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette during >>>RESIDENT, page 10
Free dental cleanings offered at Jane Street hygienists’ clinic Baby Point Gates area dental hygienist Rosa Macip wants to give everyone something to smile about. On Saturday, Feb. 9, she is joining dental hygienists from across Canada to offer a free dental cleaning for those who may be financially unable to visit a dentist regularly. Macip, who opened her clinic ‘Just Smile Dental Hygiene Care’ on Jane Street just over a year ago, said she was inspired to take part because she simply wants to give back to her community. She, along with many other hygienists, have come across
UPCOMING those who cannot afford check-ups, particularly those on a fixed income or without dental insurance, and this is an opportunity to serve those clients, she said. Each client during Gift from the Heart day is allotted 45 to 60 minutes, Micap noted. If you would like to book an appointment, call 416-951-3567. The Just Smile Clinic is situated at 317 Jane St. For more details, visit www.giftfromtheheart.ca ~ Lisa Rainford

Annual reception, silent auction to benefit The Redwood Shelter Up for grabs at The Redwood Shelter’s annual cocktail reception and silent auction fundraiser is a weekend getaway to Prince Edward County that includes a personal tour of a vineyard, a two-night stay at an inn, a dinner and play. “It’s one of our most popular items,” Emma Lewzey said, The Redwood’s fundraising manager. The Redwood, a safe haven for women and children fleeing domestic abuse in the ParkdaleHigh Park riding, hosts its seventh annual Gimme Shelter affair
Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon in the Toronto Reference Library. Over the past seven years, the event has raised more than $300,000 to benefit the 33-bed shelter, which can take credit for helping women escape abuse while changing their lives. Last year, it brought in more than $60,000. “The funding supports all of our programming, but the money will go specifically to our biggest area of need this year, our ‘Women on the Move program,’” Lewzey said.
The program pairs women, some of whom have stayed at The Redwood, with young women from various Toronto high schools to help them recognize the early signs of domestic abuse. The cocktail reception and silent auction includes dessert. The event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bram and Bluma Salon, 789 Yonge St. Tickets are $95 per person or $500 for a ‘Friends of The Redwood Package.’ To purchase tickets, visit www.theredwood. com
