A unique Valentine’s Day gift Photographer continues artistic ‘selfie’ tradition for his wife

Keeping an eye on Runnymede Theatre

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com High Park photographer David Allen was taking “selfies” long before the birth of social media and the coining of the photographic term. Every Valentine’s Day for more than 40 years, Allen has created a photograph of himself as a gift for his wife, whom he married in 1971. “Photographers love taking pictures of themselves,” Allen told The Villager over a coffee at the Grenadier Cafe in High Park this month. His latest creation came about rather accidentally while on a three-week road trip to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. “My wife and I don’t take pictures of ourselves. A picture of us with my arm around her – we don’t do that,” Allen admitted. Instead, the couple was on a cruise boat touring the New York harbour in July when Allen held his point and shoot camera out in front of him, setting up for a selfie to capture the sights behind him. Bloor West Village Residents Association (BWVRA) Chair Dianne Bradley has reached out to Shoppers Drugmart on behalf of her organization in an effort to ensure the franchisee will respect the integrity of the historic building that once was the Runnymede Theatre and current Chapters bookstore. Shoppers is scheduled to move from its current location on Bloor Street West at Durie Street to the corner of Bloor Street West and Runnymede Road this summer. As it has said since news came to light late last year that the company would be taking over the space, Shoppers assured the BWVRA it would be retaining all of the existing historical features, interior and exterior, including the stage and interior walls. “ We are preser ving all components of the building that have historical relevance and character,” spokesperson Tammy Smitham said in a statement. “Our intention in >>>chapters, page 6

Farewell to the era of dinner and dancing The Old Mill marks its centennial by honouring the past, and changing for the future

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com For Norma Ballard and her husband, Ted, the Old Mill has played a significant role in their lives serving as their go-to spot to commemorate milestones with dinner and dancing. It started more than 53 years ago when the couple celebrated their engagement. The Old Mill played host to 40 of their closest friends and family. “We had a room overlooking the dining room,” said Ballard, now 80. “It was beautiful. The service was so good; the food was amazing. It was really special.” Her father-in-law had a corporate account at the Old Mill. It was where he entertained clients and hosted family gatherings as often as once a month. Married in 1961, the couple will mark their 53rd wedding anniversary in July. “My husband was a great dancer. We danced there a lot,” she said. Ballard was sad to learn that after 99 years, the Old Mill has closed the chapter on its dinner and dancing

events. Yet, she recognizes that people’s tastes have changed. “You don’t entertain like you used to,” she said. “It’s a lot more casual now.” Indeed, that’s what Old Mill staff has come to realize as well. “We used to have dinner and dancing six days (a

week), then three days and then two days,” said Natalie Bauer, director of marketing and events. “What we found is people didn’t go out regularly. It was more of a special occasion. It’s the changing of the times.” To mark the denouement of the tradition and celebrate its centennial, the Old Mill

hosted an ‘End of Dance Era’ four-month celebration during which it covered all genres of music, including disco, jazz, rock ’n’ roll and tributes to such bands and singers as Elton John, The Eagles and the Rolling Stones while DJs spun music from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Throughout the months of

September to December, patrons could fill out a ballot to win a transatlantic cruise. Toronto entrepreneur and architect Robert Home Smith opened the Old Mill Tea Garden in 1914 on the first day of World War One. It wasn’t long before the mill became a popular gathering place for city residents. In 1921, the Old Mill introduced live music in the Print Room featuring violinist Cec Ryder and pianist Nelson Hatch. With the addition of a new dance floor in 1929, the musical duo expanded to a nine-piece orchestra and entertained six nights a week. “Today, the charm of dinner and dancing has become an evening out of a bygone era,” Bauer said. “The time has come now to return the Old Mill Dining

Room to the neighbourhood once again, a place to meet and gather, a place that speaks to the preferences of today.” Renovations are scheduled to begin likely after Mother’s Day. The new concept will retain the historic ambiance of the Old Mill dining room as well as many of the special events like afternoon tea, Sunday brunch and the Sunday dinner buffet and all the special occasions, such as Christmas and Mother’s Day. “We’ll still have entertainment in the Home Smith Bar. Only the top jazz performers in Toronto perform there. The level of talent is pretty amazing,” Bauer said. “The new concept will have a new form of entertainment in itself.” Bauer did not want to divulge too much, however she did say the revamping will include a “theatre kitchen” in which people will be able to watch the cooking take place, “almost like a cooking show.” For more information about the Old Mill and the centennial celebrations, visit www. oldmilltoronto.com

ur libraries are not just about books. While today’s libraries offer a far more diverse and sophisticated range of materials to the user, a library’s true value comes from more than the tangible materials on its shelves. Consider the entertainer visits, educational experiences and community connections that happen within library walls in this city every day. The Toronto Public Library system has 98 branches, offering a range of ways citizens can interact with one another and get engaged. It’s those types of interactions that enable communities to evolve. This week, Metroland Media Toronto published its interview with new Toronto Public Library board chair Michael Foderick. You can see our story online at: bit. ly/1bJfDj0 “The local library is the cornerstone of virtually every single successful neighbourhood in this city,” Foderick says. “That’s true from our view Etobicoke, to North York to Scarborough.” Libraries are meeting places. Shchuka, a garden society meeting at S. Walter Stewart or a baby time literacy program event in High Park, what you have is a community hub in action. Many of the city’s facilities – not just libraries – have that same multi-purpose aspect. Now think of your neighbourhood branch. It’s likely there is something it can offer you. But maybe there is something you can offer it? Many of the events that happen in our libraries involve sharing of knowledge or expertise. If you have the time and something to offer, why not volunteer? There are plenty of opportunities available. Visit http://bit.ly/1gm9fCn to find out more. It’s an exciting year for the Toronto Public Library. With openings of two new branches (Fort York and Scarborough Centre) before the end of the year, that will bring the total number of branches to 100 in the city. That’s strong coverage in a diverse city of 2.6 million people. What’s the secret to Ford’s steady support? Here are some recent data points about our mayor, that can only confound. One: the mayor’s approval rating has fallen, slightly to 43 per cent according to a Forum Research poll released on the weekend. Two: on Tuesday, a small protest of women and their children, set up outside the mayor’s office, focused not on any city policy, but on Ford’s moral turpitude. The poll was released a day before and the protest came the day after Ford clarified, on YouTube, that he’d lied about using crack cocaine for those long months because he was “embarrassed,” as many people would be under the circumstances, and so chose to lie... as people, he said, do. And it all came days after Ford decided to drop all pretense about scheduling conflicts surrounding the Pride parade and out himself as what is effectively a homophobe, trying to haul

david nickle the city down rainbow flags and snubbing World Pride as a matter of identity. It’s unlikely these two events will do anything to sway either the 40-odd per cent of Torontonians who continue to approve of the mayor’s performance, or the undefined number of parents who can no longer conceal their disgust for the mayor. How? And therein lies the confounding puzzle: how it is that a man who has seemingly embraced bigotry, dishonesty and criminal substance abuse can hold the support of such a significant percentage of the city. To say that Toronto has a growing strain of conservatism is not enough. Toronto has, apparently, an

unbelievably high level of tolerance for intolerance and dishonesty. That is so unbelievable, that it is unlikely to be true. What’s a more likely truth about Torontonians is that many of us are deeply susceptible to locally based, retail politics. Community building Willowdale Councillor John Filion took a moment Monday to talk about the Ford phenomenon in his ward, where Ford did well in 2010 and still enjoys support. Filion has been described as a left-leaning councillor, insists he’s really a centrist, and has managed to maintain the support of a ward whose voters lean to the right for two decades. Filion said he suspects many voters support Ford and himself for the same reason. “I have a message – it’s a community-building

message,” said Filion. “I’m a little like Rob Ford in that I’m out in the community all the time. “They see me in the community, say, ‘that guy understands us.’ Last election, I often had people saying I’m voting for you and for Rob Ford. They basically say it because ‘we think you both care about us.’” Filion said he could see Ford winning in October, if the field is crowded and another candidate doesn’t emerge who provides the same feeling of commonality that he does, “I hope there’s someone else the public can identify with more,” Filion said. “I haven’t seen who they are yet. “They really have to own their messages, or the Ford brothers will just body slam them and put them in a submission hold and throw them out of the ring.”

Bloor Animal Hospital and owner of A Changing Nest help community cat in need It was January 3 when Simba, a handsome 13 year old cat, first came through our doors. He was in the care of Diana and Gord Ross. Diana is the owner of A Changing Nest home furnishing and consignment shop in Bloor WestVillage. About six months prior the Ross’noticed Simba wandering the area around the store. Day after day there he was, looking like he could use a meal and a place to stay. One day, Simba wandered in. Being natural animal lovers, the Ross’welcomed him. Already having a number of other pets of their own, they were unable to bring Simba home, but the store seemed like a perfect fit for him. Simba took to his new home and immediately felt comfortable with his new family. He was also hired as the store’s “meet and greet”, welcoming customers and enjoying the attention and affection in return. He became known by name by most customers and residents in the area. The day Simba first visited us, he was in to have an infected wound in his paw examined, but

at this visit, a much greater concern was noted. Simba had glaucoma, which is a condition that increases pressure in the eye. It is painful and permanently damages the optic nerve, resulting in blindness. Unlike glaucoma in humans, dogs and cats respond very poorly to medical management and often need their eye removed to resolve the pain. We felt for the Ross’ now having to make some important and costly decisions for their new friend. Instantly, we saw why everyone had grown so attached to Simba; his bright orange coat, his kind and gentle personality and the head butts of course! We knew we had to help our community cat! On January 9, Dr. Lyons and the team at the Bloor Animal Hospital volunteered their time and resources to help Simba by surgically removing his painful and permanently blind eye. They also cleaned his teeth and removed a painful cavity. Simba sailed through his surgery without complication and made an excellent recovery at the hospital. He was a fabulous patient and bonded with the team immediately. Diana and Gord came to visit Simba frequently giving him love and affection to help him feel comfortable while at the hospital.

Gord and Diana Ross with their new family pet, Simba.

Simba is now back at home at the store and doing better than ever! Now pain free, Diana is seeing him play with toys that never took interested in! He is active and eating and back to working as the host of A Changing Nest. Clients and community residents alike are flocking to the store to see Simba back in full swing! Bloor Animal Hospital is proud to be part of such a fabulous community where we can work with other local business’ like A Changing Nest to help animals needing medical attention. Chapters CEO asks community for help staying in the village >>>from page 1 the design and construction is to respect the legacy of the building as we plan the elements for the new store. We hope to share more details as we move through the process.” Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette assured the dozens of community members who turned out to a town hall meeting hosted by Indigo CEO Heather Reisman Wednesday, Feb. 5 that she will remain in contact with Shoppers to ensure it abides by the heritage guidelines to maintain the interior and exterior of the former theatre. “I’ll be watching them like a hawk,” she said. Meanwhile, the BWVRA has joined forces with the Swansea, High Park and Old Mill residents associations to submit a nomination application to the City of Toronto, one of the initial steps in establishing a heritage district as a way of protecting the area bounded by Keele Street to the Humber River. “It would address what the neighbourhood would look

like,” Bradley told The Villager Tuesday, Feb. 11. “The village is a brand and we need to protect it.” The application is currently being reviewed by the city and a response will likely come this spring, Bradley said. “A study would have to be done,” she said. “It would be a long process. We feel it’s a way to protect the area.” The BWVRA understands the neighbourhood cannot remain static, however, any development must be “respectful,” Bradley said. Since Indigo announced that Chapters Runnymede would be closing, thousands of Torontonians have reached out through hundreds of emails, dozens of phone calls and two petitions in support of keeping the iconic store open. Scheduled to close next month, the Runnymede Theatre-turned bookstore is shutting down because its 15-year lease is up and the market rate for the area is “significantly more” than Indigo would like to pay, Reisman told her audience,

who had gathered in front of the stage and across the second-floor balcony of the store. “For years, we operated this store and lost money. Since last year, business has picked up a bit, but it’s always been a hard store from a financial standpoint,” Reisman said. Indigo is more than willing to open a smaller location, between 10,000 and 12,000 square feet – about half the size of the existing space. “Yes, we’re looking desperately,” Reisman said. “We’re actively looking. We want to be here. If you know of a spot, let us know.” Reisman assured community members that the majority of the store’s staff will be employed at other locations. As fast as Indigo can find a space, it will open a store, she said. “You all have to keep looking for the right space so we can all get together to have an opening party,” she said. So Allen managed to get not only the Statue of Liberty in the background, but an unassuming Larissa, whose face is turned away from the iconic monument. “Out of 12 frames, this is the shot – where she’s in the picture and in focus,” he said. He calls it ‘Selfie 101.’ Until last year when his wife retired as director of human resources at Ryerson University, Allen had gone to the reception desk at Larissa’s office where he dropped off the photograph in a heart-shaped box and asked her co-workers to deliver it to her. map shared on Twitter shows just how much work is needed to make TTC stations fully accessible. The map (https:// twitter.com/nicofara/ status/432975553247727616/ photo/1) from Twitter user @nicofara show the existing TTC route map juxtaposed with a modified version highlighting which stations are accessible and leaving the ones that are not blank. To date just 32 of a possible 69 stations have elevators leading to the subway, sliding doors at the entrances or other improvements intended to reduce barriers for those with mobility issues. The TTC has made a goal to have all of its stations fully accessible by 2025. Access limited to wEglinton allen road Avenue West is going to get a whole lot busier with news from

TO in TRANSIT Metrolinx that it is limiting access to Allen Road for the foreseeable future. The provincial transit planning agency is constructing the underground section of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line, which has resulted in traffic disruptions even with the main construction taking place below the avenue. This week, Metrolinx announced it is reducing northbound access to the Allen to one westbound lane for “many months”. That’s in addition to the existing lane restrictions along Eglinton. While the delays are sure to cause further road congestion to the area it probably could have been a lot worse had the city not turned down a proposal from Metrolinx to seal off all northbound access to the Allen for one full year.

But when it comes to future transit planning, Wynne was decidedly vague. While she did commit to having some sort of investment in this year’s spring budget, Wynne did not go into details during the web chat Tuesday. The premier answered about 10 questions during the one-hour AMA and promised to more throughout the week. Metrolinx using Sterling Rd. site for access LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Metrolinx anticipates little impact on the local neighbourhood as it relies on Sterling Road and the West Toronto Railpath as access points to complete grading and signal installation as part of the Georgetown South Project, according to a spokesperson. Metrolinx was to begin using 158 Sterling Rd. as an access point and storage for its new track materials as of February, but Metrolinx staff said there has been a delay in reaching an agreement between the property owner and Metrolinx for the use of the land. They are in the final stages of reaching that agreement and the Sterling Road access should be in use in the next few weeks. “We don’t anticipate many complaints from the com-

munity,” Manuel Pedrosa, manager of the Georgetown South Project, told The Villager on Monday. For the most part, Sterling Road is a commercial and industrial route, however, Pedrosa said the area is changing. Nevertheless, trucks will cross the West Toronto Railpath to enter and exit the rail corridor at 158 Sterling Rd. Right-of-way Railpath users will have right-of-way over construction vehicles while a traffic control person will be stationed at the access point during construction hours, Pedrosa said. As well, appropriate signage will be in place along the path to advise users of what lies ahead. Drivers must obey signage and must also stop and yield to railpath users. Sterling Road provides the

best access while minimizing the impact on the local neighourhood, Pedrosa said. Construction takes place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with occasional work Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An average of eight to 10 trucks will use this access point on a daily basis. They will take Sterling Road from Dundas Street West to the construction site. Metrolinx will regularly clean the road as well as the West Toronto Railpath, the provincial transit agency said. “We’re on track to complete the work by the end of the year,” Pedrosa said. For details and regular construction updates, send an email to gts@gotransit. com and make note of the ‘east corridor mailing list’ while including your name, address, telephone number and email.

Contraflow bike lane coming to Fermanagh Ave. ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com A contraflow bicycle lane is coming to Fermanagh Avenue, east of Roncesvalles Avenue, making it legal for cyclists to travel eastward on that street. Contraflow bicycle lanes allow bicycles to travel in two directions on a street that is one-way for all other vehicles. On Feb. 5, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks and City Cycling Infrastructure staff met with area residents to discuss the implementation of this lane. In an effort to address gaps in the bikeway network and improve cycling conditions in the area south of Bloor Street West to the Gardiner Expressway and from Parkside Drive to Bathurst Street, the West End Bikeway Project was launched in the fall of 2008. “People are getting injured and killed,” Perks said. “We

have an obligation to make a safe bike network.” Three routes identified were the Shaw Street Bikeway, High Park-Harbord Bikeway and the Florence-Argyle Bikeway. The section of contraflow lane on Fermanagh Avenue is part of the High Park-Harbord bike extension, which will bring cyclists from Harbord to Dewson streets, to Lindsay Avenue and then along Dundas Street West to Fermanagh Avenue and across Roncesvalles onto High Park Boulevard to High Park. Bikes heading west will continue to share the lane with traffic, but where biking east is currently illegal, the contraflow lane would allow cyclists to legally travel in that direction. At issue during the meeting was not whether the contraflow lane would be installed, as that had been decided on five years ago, but rather concerns and comments people had on the implementation.

Staff photo/ERIN HATFIELD

Fermanagh Avenue will have a contraflow bicycle lane installed, which will make it legal for cyclists to travel eastward on the one-way street.

“We are not here to argue what street it will be on,” Perks said. But a number of residents maintained they don‘t want the contraflow lane on their street. “I think as a concept this is great, but I think Westminster or Wright would be a better choice,” said one man, who identified himself as a resident of the street.

H o w e v e r, C h r i s t i n a Bouchard, a planner with the City of Toronto, focusing on transportation planning, policy, research and design for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, explained Fermanagh Avenue was chosen because it is a natural route for cyclists to take to and from High Park. Also, there is currently a traffic signal at Roncesvalles and

Fermanagh avenues, and staff explained it is best the have cyclists cross a main road, like Roncesvalles, at a signal. “This area is very bike heavy and that is a mode they want to encourage and make easier and safer,” Bouchard said. Where the parking on Fermanagh Avenue currently alternates from north to south, the installation of the contraflow lane means parking would permanently be on either the north or south side. This was one of the issues the cycling staff were seeking feedback on. Residents were given two options for the configuration of the parking and the contraflow lane: either with the bike lane next to the curb and parking on the opposite side or with the bike lane next to the on-street parking. “We prefer to install bike lanes away from the parked cars,” Bouchard said. “It is safer for cyclists and pedestrians.”

Although a number of residents explained they would prefer to see the parking continue to shift from north to south part way through the month, staff explained it is not a simple matter to move it from side to side with a bike lane. Residents can make comments to the cycling staff until Feb. 17 at which point they will decide on the parking, which will require a bylaw change. The bylaw change will go before community council in the spring. In addition, there will be a public meeting about contraflow bike lanes on ArgyleFlorence on Feb. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Alexander Muir/ Gladstone Public School, 108 Gladstone Ave. Then on March 4, a meeting, location to be determined, will look at the instillation of contraflow lanes on Dewson Street, near Dufferin Grove Park.

Taking away the Runnymede fire truck is a big mistake, says fire captain LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Toronto Fire Services Capt. John MacLachlan calls the city’s decision to remove the truck from Runnymede fire station No. 424 a “major faux pas.” MacLachlan, who grew up in the Bloor West area and worked for a time at the Swansea station and is now at the helm of the Martin Grove

and Dixon roads station No. 441, said it’s a particularly risky move given all the condominium development scheduled for construction throughout the area. “Swansea is a rescue truck. It’s the second truck into the Lake Shore (Boulevard) and Parklawn (Road) area. That would leave the whole quadrant empty,” he said, referring to just one of the impacts the removal of Runnymede’s truck

will have. There are five schools in the vicinity of Runnymede station. “Response times count,” MacLachlan said. “If Swansea is out on a call at Lake Shore and Parklawn, the next truck would be the Junction or at Jane and Dundas. Things burn hotter and faster now.” Firefighters are first responders, pointed out

MacLachlan. They respond to every emergency including heart attacks and car accidents. “We’re like your multi-tool,” said the veteran firefighter. Runnymede station’s truck will be out of commission, but the station will remain in the hands of Toronto Fire Services and used for fire prevention education. Yet, prevention officers don’t put fires out, MacLachlan said.

Removing Runnymede fire hall’s truck is a big mistake, he said. “The city is getting bigger, not smaller.” fire calls are up The Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association president Ed Kennedy said response times are getting longer without any cuts. “The number of calls

has also increased significantly,” he said in a statement. “Toronto continues its building boom and traffic congestion only gets worse. Yet the city is thinking the response to these factors is to cut front line firefighters, take trucks off the road and close fire stations. Have an opinion on this story? Runnymede P.S. students, teachers take a trip in time Fashion show from ’60s and ’70s part of centennial anniversary countdown to 2016 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The 1960s and ’70s are decades that students at Runnymede P.S. do not recall, however, they’re getting a kick out of learning all about the time period. As a way of counting down to their school’s milestone anniversary, its centennial in 2016, the students participated in an assembly Feb. 6 during which they learned about all things “groovy.” Big hair, bell-bottom pants, flower power, The Beatles, TV shows such as Happy Days and movies, such as Grease, the ’60s and ’70s were not only all about pop culture, but a time when our country’s values really changed, artist Heather Pegg told the kids in kindergarten to Grade 8. “There was the Civil Rights movement and the feminist movement; Canada got its flag in 1965. Two years later, Montreal hosted Expo ‘67. That same year was the last time the (Toronto Maple) Leafs won a Stanley Cup,” said Pegg. “In 1969,

man landed on the moon.” Pegg will be working with Grade 5 students in the spring to create a mural depicting crucial moments that happened in the 1960s and 1970s. “I hope you have a lot of fun learning from your teachers. I’m sure you’ll come up with lots of

inspirational images.” Grade 7 filmmaker Max von S c h i l l i n g , w h o Ru n n y m e d e Principal Amelia Dennis called a future Academy Award-winner, presented his documentary film short in which he interviewed people such as his grandmother, who attended Runnymede school as a child from

1944 to 1952, and several teachers and community members who were asked to reminisce about their old stomping grounds. They recalled the clothing: bell bottoms, Road Runner jeans and hooded sweatshirts; favourite movies: James Bond, starring Sean Connery and Roger Moore, Jaws and

The Jungle Book; favourite activities: four-square, jump rope and a game called Red Rover; and Runnymede school itself: the yard used to be a big slab of concrete where students could easily skin their knees and the gym used to be where the library is now. Favourite candy included Pop Rocks and Bottle Caps and Nibs, which at the time were only 65 cents. As for the neighbourhood, McDonald’s hadn’t arrived yet; the Runnymede Theatre wasn’t a bookstore and there was no subway – at least not until the mid-1960s. Until then, the streetcar would travel from Keele Street to the Jane Street and Bloor Street West loop; Booster Juice was a Sam the Record Man. As the students listened to music by ABBA and the Beatles. The highlight of the assembly was a fashion show starring Runnymede Jr. and Sr. P.S. teachers.

City’s first black electrician, John Riley, dies at age 91 After cooking for his fellow troops during the Second World War, John Riley was supposed to become a cook. Instead, Riley would come home from the war to become an electrician, Toronto’s first black electrician, something that never fazed him. He was the only black student at the three schools he attended – J.R. Wilcox Community School, D.B. Hood Public School and Vaughan Road Academy – and one of the first blacks to enlist in the army. The long-time York-area resident, who worked all over the city and had strong ties to the Bloor West area, died Feb. 4 after a long illness. He was 91. He is survived by four of his children, daughters Bev and Ollie and sons Stephen and Bobby. He is predeceased by son Herbert. “We were the first Negroes in York, really,” said Riley,

My father was a blacksmith with the TTC and the only black worker at the time.” At D.B. Hood, Riley was the only one on the football

team who was black. “We won the championships in the ‘30s and I was the only coloured kid on the team at the time. I got along with everybody and didn’t pay too much attention to it,” he said. For 57 years, Riley operated an electrical contract company, which his son Stephen said wired the entire neighbourhood where he grew up as well as the former Runnymede Theatre at the corner of Runnymede Road and Bloor Street West. Riley had a large circle of friends, said his son, who followed in his father’s footsteps to become an electrician. “He coached my baseball team when I was little,” he said. Stephen lives by his father’s philosophy: “If you’re going to do a job, do it right.”
