Celebrating a century of education Runnymede turns back the clock LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Students cheered as some of their teachers donned period costumes to illustrate the fashions of decades’ past strutted down a makeshift catwalk during an assembly to celebrate Runnymede Public School’s centennial. “It’s a rare occasion to have every student in the gym this morning,” Principal Amelia Dennis told the capacity crowd that had gathered in the kindergarten to Grade 8 school’s gymnasium on Friday. “We’ve been preparing for this occasion for five years. We’re so happy we’re able to gather this morning to celebrate together.” The event brought together former student volunteers, parents, students and staff as they took in the special fashion show which showcased designs from the 1900s to 2000s, a series of collages created by senior students who researched each decade of the school’s existence and even a short documentary film created by a former student about the secrets of Runnymede. “It’s fun to see the kids learning the history (of their school),” Allan Britnell, whose two daughters are in French Immersion at Runnymede, said. “It’s a great teachable opportunity.” The school’s success can be attributed, in part, to the significant contribution from parents and the community, Britnell told The Villager. “Almost from Day One, parents and the community have been involved in the

school,” he said. The original three-storey, four classroom school officially opened on Feb. 1, 1916. Students had started that school year at what was then Strathcona School, at St. Johns and Runnymede roads – where Runnymede Healthcare Centre is today. There was a little confusion among parents as to when the 100th anniversary would be recognized because of a date carved in stone over the main door that says ‘1914.’ It was Marshall Leslie, whose two children are graduates of Runnymede P.S., who “rediscovered” the official first day of class through a hand written ledger found among all the materials in the school’s archives. It was in 1914 that the Toronto school board began purchasing lots for the school, the majority of which came from a developer and the final piece at the northeast corner of Runnymede Road and Colbeck Avenue from a ‘Ms. Louisa Adella Aiken’ for $1,564. Yet, it wasn’t until February of 1916 that classes

began. “Runnymede’s a great school community. The school has been in the top 10 in terms of enrolment for decades,” Leslie said. “On occasion, enrolment has been over 1,500. This is an established residential neighbourhood. It has been since before World War One.” A ‘Home and School Association’ formed early in the school’s existence can be credited for establishing the music program which continues to operate. The associa-

tion was also instrumental in getting the Runnymede library branch in the neighbourhood, Britnell said. The current weekday morning routine – of students swarming through the school doors – is radically different than it once was. “We had to form into lines with the other students in our class and, when we were quiet, we had to march in time with the music of a piano to our classes,” according to archived information from a person named ‘Mr. Waymark’, a student from 1924 to 1929. When it opened, Runnymede school was a three-storey, brick and stone building comprised of 12 rooms; only four of which were used as classrooms. By 1918, it had grown to six classrooms. In 1920, a 20,000 square-foot addition was added onto the back of the original building, almost doubling its overall size. As of 1946, the school boasted 38 rooms, a gymnasium and an auditorium. The largest addition came in 1960, a 28,000 square-foot wing, which included a “gymnatorium,” now known as the senior gym. As part of the school’s archives, Runnymede’s centennial committee discovered that former principals used to keep copies of a ‘Record of Corporal Punishment’ from 1933 to 1955. These booklets recorded dates and names of students, their offences and the ‘No. of Slaps’ ranging from two to 10. Runnymede will host a Centennial Open House and Fun Fair, on Saturday, May 28. Past and present students, teachers, staff and community members are invited to attend.

This means that employers will be able to hire nearly 70,000 students, Trudeau added. Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-forprofit organizations, publicsector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees in an effort to help create summer job opportunities for students. The Liberal government, Trudeau said, will continue to provide this funding for the next three years. “That’s what we have to understand about empowering young people – yes, we’re building a stronger future for them, but we’re also building a stronger present for everyone they work for, with their experience and hard work,” he said. “That’s why investing in young people is important and why our government is more focused than any other government in Canada has been on building opportunities for youth.” The funding will be distributed to the country’s 338 constituencies on the basis of the most recent labour force

Summer jobs can inspire positive futures for youth

rime Minister Justin Trudeau celebrated his milestone of 100 days in office by marking what he hopes will be a new milestone for Canadian youth. Trudeau wants to get close to 70,000 youth working this summer, and the federal Liberals are committing massive amounts of money over the next three years to make that a reality. On Friday, he made a surprise visit to Toronto’s Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club where he announced the government would be injecting $113 million each year for the next three years to get young people in the workforce. The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees in an effort to help create summer job opportunities for students. The Trudeau government is our view on the right track to setting up students for success. A job today equals an education tomorrow. A job today allows one to support her family in tough economic times. A job today helps a young person have hope for the future. The federal funding will be distributed to Canada’s 338 ridings. Areas that have higher levels of unemployed youth will get more funds. The program funds job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year. The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2016 has been extended until March 11, so there is still time to get involved.

Sadness is at the heart of the Uber-taxi battle There have been few issues at Toronto City Hall so consistently suffused with sadness as the Uber-X ride sharing fight with taxi drivers has been this past 18 months or so. From the outside, it’s been easy to confuse that sadness with rage. At the early February meeting of Toronto council, taxi drivers’ rage was certainly on display: several had to be removed from the council chamber as they watched councillors step away from seeking an immediate court injunction to stop Uber-X from operating in the city. Last week, Paul Sekston, one of those taxi drivers, took that anger to the airwaves and announced the new United Taxi Workers’ Association would be staging a protest to disrupt the NBA All-Star Game and run-up to it. It would have been a bad scene had it happened, but it didn’t. The same day, Feb. 11, he and other members of the taxi industry had a sit-down

david nickle the city with three city councillors – Janet Davis, Glenn De Baeremaeker and Kristyn Wong-Tam – after which, they decided to call it off. What clinched it? They simply needed to hear city councillors say aloud the thing that is undeniably true. Uber-X, as it’s currently operating in the city, is illegal. And there it was: the heart of the sadness beating beneath the crumbling front of rage. Taxi drivers, or at least Sekston, need if not a hug, then at least some clear allies in what they perceive, correctly, as the fight for their vocational lives. Mayor John Tory has tried to provide some assurance after he mused about the inevitability of disruptive technologies in a way that seemed to be giving Uber-X a moral if not entirely legal break.

And from the perspective of taxi drivers seeing their livelihoods dry up, Uber-X has gotten an easy ride from almost everyone else on the legal front. Yes, it’s complicated. When cab drivers came to the Toronto Police Services Board demanding more drivers be charged, Chief Mark Saunders explained doing so en masse is legally and operationally challenging. And when cab drivers demanded Toronto enforce its own bylaw – passed just last fall – setting up requirements for UberX’s continued operation that the ride-sharing app and the drivers who use it couldn’t and wouldn’t meet, council demurred. Again, it was for strategic reasons: if an injunction can’t be heard for three months, and the city’s new regulations governing ridesharing apps will be before council in two, the entire matter may become moot. Meanwhile, Uber Canada continues its charm offen-

sive, delivering kittens to stressed-out office workers and experimenting with shuttle services to underserved communities near the downtown – and, of course, by undercutting taxi fares for customers who are becoming used to trading fare savings for the invisible risks of riding an unregulated service. And to add to the sting: the Toronto licenced taxi model isn’t a sterling alternative. While taxis are regulated, the vehicles more rigorously inspected and drivers more comprehensively insured, Toronto’s system of commodified plates and absentee owners still makes for an ugly feudalism under which drivers work now. It’s been awful to watch, no doubt awful to live, and it’s hard to see anything near a happy ending to it all.

Province accepting applications for parent-led projects that encourage student learning Ontario is offering parents grants for parent-led projects that encourage student learning and promote wellbeing. “Engaged parents play a crucial role in student achievement and well-being,” Education Minister Liz Sandals said in a statement of the government’s Parents Reaching Out Grants. “With their guidance and support, students are typically more motivated, earn higher grades and have better behaviour and social skills — making them ready to reach their full potential and enjoy

a bright future.” The Ontario government funded more than 2,200 projects in the 2015 to 2016 school year that helped parents identify barriers to engagement and found solutions to help parents be engaged in their children’s learning. Projects included: n workshops and parent resources on mental health and well-being, cyber bullying and healthy living; n parent-information sessions on strategies to promote their children’s math learning at home and at school; n Family Science Nights to

encourage parents to learn about science with their children, and; n Biidaaban Community Service Learning program to support Indigenous adult learners and their families.
