Raising dogs to help the blind Canadian guide dog association looking for new foster homes

Local chapter is one of 5,000 worldwide

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Sara McMurdo said she feels a surge of motherly pride on graduation day when she witnesses her four-legged charges make a connection with their new owners, those she’s been training them to serve since eight weeks of age. It’s a bittersweet moment for the 26-year-old Runnymede Road resident, who has to part with each dog after raising them for 12 to 18 months. “It’s like watching a kid leave the nest,” McMurdo said at a Bloor West Village coffee shop recently with seven-month old “Charlie,” a black Labrador retriever at her feet. Hamming it up for the camera, Charlie was behaving like one would expect any other enthusiastic and affectionate lab puppy to behave. The only difference was, Charlie wore a vest that identified him as a Canadian Guide Dog for the Blind (CGDB) in training. Charlie accompanies McMurdo everywhere – running errands, going to the movies, grabbing a coffee or going to work.

As a foster parent for the CGDB, a national, non-profit, registered, charitable organization, she is responsible for socializing Charlie in as many different, everyday environ-

ments as possible, and for teaching him basic obedience commands such as “sit,” “stay” and “wait.” “Having a dog is a huge commitment,” McMurdo said. “The

F i n a n c i a l p l a n n e r Pa t t i McGuigan says she can’t say enough about Business Network International (BNI). She’s been a member of the business networking organization’s High Park chapter for most of its 15 years. “It’s been a fantastic experience,” said McGuigan, who became involved during the second year of her practice. “The reason people join is to help build their business – it’s a referral group. I get to pass a referral to my clients, people I trust. I can’t say enough good things.” BNI’s recent breakfast meeting at Dr. Generosity in Bloor West Village marked an extra special milestone: the local chapter’s 15th anniversary, which the group celebrated with draws, party favours and cake. With more than 5,000 chapters and 100,000 members in 37 countries around the world, >>>group, page 8
