Raising dogs to help the blind Canadian guide dog association looking for new foster homes

Local chapter is one of 5,000 worldwide

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Sara McMurdo said she feels a surge of motherly pride on graduation day when she witnesses her four-legged charges make a connection with their new owners, those she’s been training them to serve since eight weeks of age.

It’s a bittersweet moment for the 26-year-old Runnymede Road resident, who has to part with each dog after raising them for 12 to 18 months.

“It’s like watching a kid leave the nest,” McMurdo said at a Bloor West Village coffee shop recently with seven-month old “Charlie,” a black Labrador retriever at her feet.

Hamming it up for the camera, Charlie was behaving like one would expect any other enthusiastic and affectionate lab puppy to behave. The only difference was, Charlie wore a vest that identified him as a Canadian Guide Dog for the Blind (CGDB) in training.

Charlie accompanies McMurdo everywhere – running errands, going to the movies, grabbing a coffee or going to work.

Residents ‘stand in solidarity’ Ukrainian Canadian Congress plans more rallies calling for sanctions TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Canadian-Ukrainians joined the chorus of western democracies speaking out this week against the vicious crackdown in Kyiv that has left at least 25 dead and hundreds injured.

Approximately 1,000 CanadianUkrainians rallied in the dark on Tuesday night chanting “sanctions” outside the Ukrainian Consulate on Lake Shore Boulevard West as thousands of their pro-European Union brethren in Ukraine held their ground against riot police in the tent city they have occupied in Kyiv’s Independence Square since the political crisis began last November.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) quickly organized the emergency rally and memorial after Ukrainian riot police reportedly used rubber bullets, batons and water cannons against thousands of protestors. Reports of the use of

live ammunition and protestors’ deaths soon followed.

Another consulate rally was planned for Wednesday night, and another on Sunday at 3 p.m. possibly outside Toronto City Hall.

“We were there to stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and to make sure other Canadians are aware that democracy is being trampled on in Ukraine,” Olya Grod, a UCC Toronto board member said in an interview Wednesday morn-

ing. She also sits on UCC Toronto’s Euromaidan committee.

“It’s absolutely shocking that the government would be using such force against their own people.

They want to hang on to power so desperately that they’re shooting people. It’s live ammunition. It’s full-out war.”

Fourth-generation UkrainianCanadians joined in the rally with people of the first generation, many post-secondary students with family in Ukraine, she said.

Protests in Kyiv began in late November after President Viktor Yanukovych chose to abandon proposed ties with the European Union in favour of strengthening the country’s trade relationship with

Russia. Many Ukrainians hopeful for a modernized country saw the move as a step backward to Russia’s Soviet past.

Parkdale-High Park NDP MP Peggy Nash, who attended the rally, called the violence in Ukraine “shocking”.

“Canada has to be very strong in condemning the escalating violence and use of force in Ukraine,” Nash said late Tuesday afternoon. “We join with Ukrainian-Canadians in calling on the Canadian government to impose economic sanctions, as well as travel sanctions on individuals and families involved.”

Nash, who has a large CanadianUkrainian constituency living in her west-end riding, said she believes Canada also has a role to play in mediating a political solution, including being a “strong observer presence” to the political crisis in Kyiv.

Etobicoke Centre MP Ted Opitz and Selkirk-Interlake MP James Bezan, who is of Ukrainian descent, issued a joint statement Wednesday morning saying they are “disgusted by the callous behaviour demonstrated by President Yanukovych and his regime”.

“Brutal force will not solve the problems in Ukraine...” the MPs said in their statement. “We echo the Government of Canada’s call for all sides to show restraint and to cease all acts of violence immediately.

“No act of violence or repression today will go unnoticed by the Government of Canada, and we will work with our allies in the international community to ensure that those responsible will be held to account.”

Opitz and Bezan explained that on Monday the Ukrainian government refused to register a bill that would limit Yanukovych’s powers, which resulted in the protestors taking further action. The MPs referenced reports riot police were carrying live ammunition and grenades.

f we were to wipe off almost four years of dust from our crystal ball, the smoke would reveal a possible provincial election this spring. With that, comes uncertainty and, potentially, the province’s (and with it Toronto’s) transit file getting derailed – again.

If we are to take Metrolinx at its word, the provincial transit agency has put everything on the table when it comes to transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). At its recent meeting, a long list of options was presented by staff, which will then get whittled down following consultations with the public and elected officials.

More consultations? More waiting. And what feels like more of the same, which our view amounts to very little. Cynicism aside, Torontonians should attend Project any and all meetings when it comes to transit solutions. We deadlines need voices at the table. As many have to be met voices as we can muster.

With some projects now underway – the Eglinton Crosstown LRT; the Scarborough subway was given the green light – and Metrolinx committed to a share of the subway relief line within 15 years, we have a shot at being part of the discussion.

And according to Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig, the plans are not limited to one major project, but likely a series of improvements in the short, mid- and longterm.

However, there needs to be a maximum time allotment for dealing with a project. No more open-ended deadlines. Projects take years – sometimes decades – to complete; so too much lag in decision-making is foolish.

Each day we consult, every week we wait for another meeting, the longer it will take to actually finalize a transit solution for the GTHA. If Metrolinx is to embark on another series of consultations – the first round kicking off in March – we should be there to voice our ideas. With an initial short list of recommendations to be presented to the Metrolinx board in June, and a final list by winter, things will hopefully become focused.

But when these projects will be completed is not so definite. A change in governments should not lead to changes to these approved projects. Deadlines have to be met. Decisions have to stick.

Del Grande exceeded expectations

I

n my career as a journalist, I’ve only made two politicians angry enough to put me on their do-notreturn-calls black list. The first was former Mayor Mel Lastman, who never really got over the fact that I didn’t endorse him for mayor in the 1997 municipal election.

The second was Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande.

In 2004, a year after he was first elected, he took me on a pre-Christmas tour of his ward and made some comments about the changing demographics there: specifically, that white people were moving out as Chinese people were moving in. I recorded them on an old-fashioned magnetic tape, and reported them, accurately.

They showed up in The Scarborough Mirror over Christmas. By New Year’s Eve, commentators from outlets across the country were saying the worst things about him. And that was it for us.

For the next 10 years, Del Grande would not return

david nickle the city phone calls, speak with me or even acknowledge my presence – with rare exceptions, usually when I’d written something that made him angry enough to warrant a tongue-lashing. Toward the end of his tenure as budget chief, he would line up one-on-one interviews with my colleagues in his office, rather than hold a scrum outside in which I might be present.

On the weekend, Del Grande announced he won’t be seeking re-election in Ward 39. I have not called him about this. Given everything, I expect the call wouldn’t be returned.

So instead, I write this column: in part, as an open letter to a councillor who has spent a career throwing up his arms in frustration and anger at his critics and his colleagues – and at the same time, accomplished many of the things I think he hoped

to see happen after he was first elected in 2003.

Del Grande came to city hall with an accounting background, and he believed fervently that he was a person to sort out Toronto’s fiscal woes. He wasn’t able to convince David Miller, the then-freshly elected mayor at the time, and that began seven long years in the wilderness. When Rob Ford announced his intention to run for mayor in 2010, Del Grande was among the first to support him, and when Ford won, Del Grande’s support was rewarded with the job he first eyed in 2003: Toronto’s budget chief.

And no one can deny: Del Grande worked that job hard.

Unlike other budget chiefs, he took on the lion’s share of the work himself – often complaining of the long hours he spent at home, trying to fit the camel-sized realities of the cost of government through Mayor Ford’s needle-sized expectations of the price. Deputations coming before budget com-

mittee might have been put off by Del Grande’s gruff manner of questioning. But he did use the answers he got to put forward moderate compromises that he hoped would get the final result through council.

And it almost worked. But Del Grande quit the job in 2013, when council voted to add more spending to his budget against his wishes. As far as he was concerned, he felt “vilified.”

At this year’s budget meeting, he railed, quite accurately, against the lack of civility, and elsewhere has criticized the moral decline Ford has brought to the mayor’s office.

And now, as Councillor Del Grande prepares to exit the realm of for good, I hope that he doesn’t think too poorly of the place that he feels used him so badly. It may not have lived up to his expectations – but really, over 10 years here, he has only exceeded so many of ours.

The puppies, typically golden and Labrador retriever breeds, must learn what it takes to be a well mannered and good-natured dog before they return to the centre where they receive official training to become an assistance dog. with someone 24 hours, seven days a week as a working dog. Initially, puppies must be kept inside until they have received all their vaccinations by the age of 16 weeks. Then, volunteers are asked to take the puppy anywhere they go to immerse them in as many situations as possible. They must be walked daily for long periods of time in all weather conditions.

Once the dog is ready for formal training at the National Training Centre of Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind near Ottawa, volunteers must relinquish the animal.

“Once a year, I go through a state of depression,” admitted McMurdo, who has raised three dogs for the CGDB. “It’s like going through a breakup.

I sit on the couch and eat HäagenDazs.”

Growing up in Bolton, McMurdo had two dogs of her own, an English bulldog and a Cairn terrier (like Toto in the movie The Wizard of Oz) and later walked dogs at the SPCA in Newmarket.

“I’ve always loved dogs,” she said.

In her early 20s, she wasn’t sure she wanted to make a potentially 15-year commitment to care for her own dog and decided instead she wanted to foster.

“Charlie is probably my favourite,” McMurdo said.

“He’s the most responsive to me.

You could wave a steak in front of his face and if I was talking to him, he wouldn’t notice.”

Charlie is very much a people dog.

“He’ll go up to people on the subway and stare at them until he gets their attention,” McMurdo said.

TTC performance reports slated The TTC is promising to release a series of quarterly performance reports in 2014 to track how well it has lived up to past commitments to improve service.

The reports, the first of which will be available by mid-April, are intended to evaluate how well the TTC has fared when it comes to implementing service improvements as promised in this year’s customer charter.

Some of its first-quarter commitments include new janitor uniforms, additional staff to deal with Wheel-Trans customers and spring cleaning at every TTC station.

Five-metre high walls to go up along Bloor, St. Clair rail corridor

Opposition continues around controversial barriers According to Thornton’s email, the decision was made following door-to-door canvassing and mailouts to residents living between Bloor and St. Clair facing the rail corridor, which was done from Dec. 9 to 18.

Only 22 per cent of contacted residents responded, but of those that did 72 per cent supported installing the full build-out of noise walls by 2015, while 14 per cent were opposed and an additional 14 per cent were neutral.

This followed six months of collaborations with community advisory committees (CACs), eight separate neighbourhood working groups that worked with Metrolinx and noise walls designer IBI Group to modify the proposed designs to reflect concerns such as the length of shadows caused by the walls and their potential to be a magnet for graffiti.

But Kevin Putnam from the Junction Triangle Rail Committee, which has strongly opposed the proposed noise wall designs, said Metrolinx’s rationale for proceeding with the full build-out is “suspect”.

He said feedback from the CAC meetings indicated heavy opposition to the noise wall designs. A survey undertaken by Metrolinx before the December canvas indicates 57 per cent of the CAC for Bloor to

Metrolinx will proceed with a controversial plan to erect noise wall barriers along the GO Georgetown South (GTS) rail corridor, the transit planning agency has announced.

The provincial transit planning agency confirmed this month it’s going ahead with a full build-out of fivemetre-high barriers along the stretch of rail corridor between Bloor Street West and St. Clair Avenue West, intended to act as a buffer for the noise and vibration caused by the anticipated hike in diesel train traffic along the corridor next year.

The increase in traffic is projected to increase noise levels by more than five decibels in residential areas following the launch of the Union-Pearson (UP) Express air rail link in 2015.

In an email to residents, Metrolinx community relations manager Kelly Thornton explained the decision to go with a full build – despite not being required as per provincial noise regulations – was made to increase “sound protection” for residents.

Another CAC representing Lansdowne Avenue to Bloor reported 70 per cent support for the option.

“So Metrolinx disavowed the process they created and instead did a street survey with only a 22 per cent return rate.

Were residents provided with a green option to consider?” said Putnam by email.

The walls will vary in appearance from precast concrete with a ribboned motif to clear transparent acrylic.

Some of the walls will have a trellis from which to hang greenery. It will cost some $20 million to construct the full 10-kilometre GO Georgetown South build-out.

Critics of the walls say their construction will put off plans to electrify UP, which will run diesel trains when it begins service. However, Metrolinx believes the noise walls are needed regardless if electrification.

An alternative design for a “green wall” concept put forth by the Toronto architectural firm Brown and Storey was dismissed last year by Metrolinx officials as being too expensive to maintain.

Tendering for the construction is expected to begin in March.

The City of Toronto has now mailed the interim property tax bills for 2014.

Home-based dialysis gives patients freedom of care LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Devastated when doctors informed him he had kidney failure in 2006, Etobicoke resident Flynn Ramirez had no idea what dialysis was, let alone how it worked.

Fast forward seven years and Ramirez, 56, is administering his own dialysis – in the comfort of his own home

– thanks to a program provided by St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

Featured in the hospital’s February e-newsletter, Ramirez demonstrates how he attaches a pack of saline solution and several tubes that transfer blood through his system, a procedure that saves the lives of patients like Ramirez, whose kidney functions at about 13 per cent, a

result of high blood pressure.

He checks the hemodialysis machine’s settings and makes sure the tubes and bags will properly pump his blood through the dialyzer before attaching them to the tubes on his chest.

“It’s really changed a lot,” Ramirez told The Villager when asked how the at-home dialyzing has impacted his life.

A typical hemodialysis patient spends the equivalent of 32 days every year being treated in hospital, according to Jacqui Cooper, patient care manager for the Renal Therapy program at St. Joe’s.

Ramirez is able to modify his schedule to accommodate his six-hour treatment every other day.

“You can do it any time,” said Ramirez, who oftentimes will dialyze overnight while he’s sleeping.

The hospital’s at-home dialysis program, christened ‘Homeward Bound,’ was proposed two years ago by Cooper, who said, theoretically, anyone can be a candidate. As long as one is willing to be trained.

“It gives patients back their freedom,” she said, adding patients tend to experience less discomfort at home.

The only downside to the program, which is covered

by OHIP, is that it causes an increase in hydro and water bills, Cooper said.

Renal failure can be caused by such conditions as diabetes, Staph infections and high blood pressure.

“When your kidneys aren’t performing properly, waste builds up in your blood,” Cooper said.

Those who want to participate in ‘Homeward Bound’ undertake a six-week training

course. Once they are established at home, there is a nurse and technician on call just in case they encounter any difficulties, she said.

Ramirez can’t say enough about the support he receives from hospital staff.

“They’re really, really great,” he said.

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about summer sports registration for the kids.

HighParkBaseballAssociation is gearing up for a 2014 season filled with T-Ball, Little League, OBA Rep, House League, and All Star for boys and girls five to 21 years old.

The High Park Baseball Association has had roots in the Bloor West community for over 50 years. As one of the most popular leagues in West Toronto, it hosts thirty-two house league teams plus an instructional league, which gives more than five hundred kids the opportunity to have fun, while being ac-

tive playing baseball or T-Ball. All games and practices take place in High Park. There is a swimming pool and a snack bar close to the diamonds, providing a lot of outdoor action for parents and kids.

There are two umpires per game to ensure a fair and fast contest. All players receive real

baseball uniforms and they are presented with trophies at the end of the year.

This year, High Park Little League and T-Ball divisions will field rep teams at all age levels, including an all-girls T-Ball team, to travel to tournaments during the summer.

Registration is now open for the 2014 season. Returning players’ registration takes place from February 8-14 and new players’ registration takes place February 21-23 and February 28 to March 2. Register in person at the High Park Baseball Clubhouse.

High Park residents rally to stop new highrises High Park residents will continue to challenge a developer’s application to demolish two existing blocks of townhouses to make room for two new 26-storey residential apartment buildings at 51-77 Quebec Ave. and 40-66 High Park Ave., at the upcoming Etobicoke York Community Council meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 25.

“We are hopeful that many, many residents will attend council that date to show support,” said Judy Love, a member of the High Park Coalition, a collection of community members, residents, condo owners and tenants, who banded together last year to oppose the proposed 600-unit ‘Grenadier Square’ condo-

minium complex.

Planning Act. A pre-hearing conference is scheduled for March 21 when a hearing date will be scheduled. ‘overdevelopment’ City planning staff has deemed the proposal “overdevelopment of the site.”

“The proposed building height, massing and den-

sity are not in keeping with the existing context for this block,” according to the staff report.

High Park Coalition representatives will be making deputations at the community council meeting.

“To impress upon the councillors our concerns with the application, it is important that the commu-

nity have a large presence on the February 25th meeting,” said the coalition in a statement.
