Vrecic relied on as many as five Percocets, 90 mg of morphine and two 80 mg Oxycodone pills daily. It wasn’t until after his doctor gave him a prescription for medical marijuana that his life radically improved. “I’ve replaced (the pills) with four to five (medicinal) cookies a day, which won’t destroy my liver or stomach and won’t make me feel like a walking zombie,” he told The Villager. >>>patients, page 8

Chris Locke takes absurd act to sketch festival Get forestry LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Insanity, absurdity, dark, silly: this is the kind of humour audiences can expect from The Gurg, a sketch comedy duo starring High Park resident Chris Locke and long-time friend Brian Barlow, during performances at the 11th annual Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. Billed as Canada’s pre-eminent comedy festival, the event, which takes place March 3 to 13, features scripted and ensemble work by comedy troupes and performers. Locke and Barlow are founding members of the comedy collective Laugh Sabbath that could be seen at The Rivoli until 2012 when it began performing Thursdays at the Comedy Bar, at Bloor Street West and Ossington Avenue. The collective’s weekly shows include standup, sketch, and short films, among other mediums. The festi-

val will present a tribute to Laugh Sabbath’s 10 years. Locke jokes that he decided to become a comedian the moment he dropped out of Dalhousie University and “got kicked out of my parents’ house.” “I grew up being an entertainer, a goof,” Locke said. “Everyone was always telling me I should have been a comedian.” Locke got his start at open mic nights and took a sketch comedy course at Second City, which he says threw him into the fire that is sketch comedy. That’s where he met a slew of like-minded comedians. The standup comedian said he loves silliness and absurdity. He’s inspired by real anecdotes that he then takes to “silly heights.” “Most of my favourite writing comes from being live, in-themoment,” Locke said. Locke presents a monthly comedy night called Riffington at The

day show, takes place Wednesday, March 2. Comedians must perform off-the-cuff, he said. The Etobicoke native and awardwinning comedian can be seen on the CBC sitcom Mr. D and Just for Laughs. He was awarded Best Stand Up at the Canadian Comedy Awards in 2014. Locke and his wife, Kathleen Phillips, an actor, writer and comedian, are expecting their first child in March. Author gets comedic inspiration from Aristophanes LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Writer-comedian-amateur historian Neil Ross was nine when he first discovered Aristophanes, the comic playwright of ancient Athens, known as the Father of Comedy. Yet, it would be more than a decade before Ross, a Junction resident, would read the dramatist’s work. “I didn’t find his collection of plays until I was 21,” Ross said. Only 11 of Aristophanes’ 30 plays exist today and serve as the only concrete evidence of a particular kind of comedy drama known as Old Comedy. Ross stumbled across Aristophanes, whose plays are said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other writer, while searching for comedy icons. He said he was introduced to Aristophanes by the Canadian humourist Stephen Leacock in the mid-1960s after reading a piece called ‘Homer and Humbug.’

“If you’re interested in history and comedy, (Aristophanes) becomes a holy grail,” Ross told The Villager during a conversation at his favourite Junction neighbourhood coffee joint on an early January afternoon. Aristophanes’ work delves into the social, literary and philosophical life of Athens as well as topics triggered by the Peloponnesian War. ‘plays are outrageous’ “His plays are outrageous, hugely sexual, occasionally scatological and scathing of Athenian politics, most notably those of the War Party,” Ross wrote in a blog post. Aristophanes’ 11 plays became a table beside Ross’ computer as he wrote his first-ever e-novel, inspired by the playwright, called Comedy Can Be Murder: An Aristophanes Murder-Comedy. “The idea of a murder-mystery wouldn’t leave me alone,” Ross revealed. The historical detective fiction is

“the greatest comedy movie never made,” he quipped. Set in Athens 225 B.C.E., the book tells the story of promising new playwright Aristophanes. In the midst of accusations that he is responsible for killing his star actor, he is forced to solve the murder while creating the ‘first known comic masterpiece’ as a war rages, one he believes absurd. Ross encourages readers to picture today’s comedians, actors and politicians, such as John Cleese, Jim Carrey and George W. Bush, among a host of others, playing historical characters during the Athenian comedy period. Aristophanes is the book’s narrator. He describes the events that take place during the production of his first recorded play. “I pulled it off in six months,” Ross said of writing the book. “I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed anything more.” For further information, visit http://comedycanbemurder.com

Tory’s L.A. trip will boost Toronto’s film and TV industry

Write us

C

onsidering that film and television production work is worth $1-billion a year to Toronto, we think it’s a good idea Mayor John Tory is heading out to Los Angeles for a business mission in support of the industry. The mayor of one of the world’s largest centres for film, television and digital media production should be making annual visits to help promote and protect what is an important business to our city. And he goes at an especially good time as the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar makes shooting movies and television shows in Toronto even more attractive for American production companies. “Toronto’s film and television sector is a growing source of jobs and economic growth,” said Tory in a city press release. Along with the dollars the industry pumps into Toronto’s economy, it’s also helping grow an valuable source of local our view extremely talent, which benefits our city on so many levels. Being a centre of Trip helps film and television production makes Toronto a cultural hub promote T.O.’s also in Canada for those industries. It builds a strong community of not economy only people in the creative arts, but also in the many technical sides of the industry from high-tech digital imaging, to sound systems, to set building, special effects, catering, transportation, hotels and more. It’s an industry that also builds Toronto a profile beyond the film industry as it also helps increase tourism. While in Los Angeles, Tory has meetings planned with 11 major studios including CBS, Paramount, Warner and Sony. According to the city, those studios alone have more than $800-million worth of projects planned for Toronto in 2016 alone. Tory is not going by himself on this trip either, as he is bringing a delegation of both film and tourism professionals from the city with him. They represent Canadian companies and the local hospitality industry, and are making the trip with the mayor on their own dime. There are nine partners as part of the mayor’s delegation and they are paying $5,000 each to sponsor An Evening With Canada’s Stars that will showcase Canadian excellence in the industry as part of the visit. Tory will also meet with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. While some may see this as a nice excuse for the mayor to get out to California at the end of February, we view it as an important part of the job, promoting local industry and looking after the economic health of Toronto.

‘Crazy’ gondola scheme might be stretching it If you’re going to pitch a crazy transit scheme like gondolas across the Don Valley to service a fancy artisanal market, probably it’s best to make sure that nobody’s planning an extravagant mea-culpa about their crazy transit scheme within the same week. Such is the unhappy circumstance that the entrepreneurial gondola-iers at Bullwheel International Cable Car Corp., who pitched their plan to stretch cable across the Don Valley just days before Metrolinx moved to slash prices on the Union-Pearson Express train to boost its gossamerthin ridership. The train was at one time touted as a major economic development boost, providing a quick link between Union Station and Pearson airport. The investment – $465 million – was deemed worthwhile, even as the private sector consortium initially interested in the project lost interest, and in

david nickle the city 2010 Metrolinx took the whole thing over. The private sector clearly knew something that the public sector leadership didn’t, because the rail line opened up with tepid ridership. It wasn’t hard to see why. With few stations, and those that existed difficult to access, the only way that the 25-minute airport ride could be a convenience would be for those travellers who were staying or holding meetings within a short walk of Union Station. And with the price point of $27 one way, really only executives with an expense account would have any reason to ride it. But for that class of traveller, an airport limo ride with door-to-terminal service would only cost a few dollars more. What a terrible idea that

airport express train was. What a terrible, seductive idea. It was so seductive, of course, because it played to that aspirational myth that is so damaging to Toronto’s more necessary priorities: namely, that we need to dress ourselves up in the manner of much larger cities in Europe and America in order to remain competitive. So if there are trains from Stockholm’s downtown to its airport, and an express train between Victoria Station and Gatwick Airport in London, what fun it would be for us to be like that too. So many of our major transit initiatives have sprung from that ethos. In the 1990s, then North York mayor Mel Lastman fought tooth and nail to make sure there was money for the Sheppard subway, because he knew that building it would validate the Yonge-Sheppard hub that was to be his old city’s

downtown. Scarborough is getting an absurd, one-stop subway extension to the Scarborough Town Centre, because residents there have been convinced that a subway is the path to civic legitimacy. The gondolas as described sound like a lot of fun – soaring over the leafy glories of the Don Valley, carrying passengers from the million-dollar-homes of prime Riverdale to the boutiques and paths of the Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley and back. It sounds almost enough fun to subsidize with tax dollars when the logistics prove too costly and the revenues too slim for the private sector. The worst that can happen is you might have to cut your fares.

>>>from page 1 Vrecic, along with business partner Chris Zentil, are the co-owners of ‘True Compassion,’ a compassion centre that opened late last year at Dundas West and Jane streets. Unlike dispensaries or access centres, a compassion centre, they explained, is solely for medical patients to purchase medical marijuana. It’s run by patients serving patients. It was the first of two outlets to open in the Junction area recently. Canada Bliss Herbal Society opened Feb. 1 on Dundas Street West, just east of High Park Avenue, in the heart of the Junction. Like Vrecic, Zentil has experienced the healing powers of the medical herb. After a major car accident in 2001, he started getting seizures. “I lost my job and my license,” he said. “I struggled with finding a combination of pharmaceuticals. I’m still taking pharmaceuticals in conjunction with marijuana – I haven’t had a seizure since.” Medical marijuana has the ability to stave off and provide relief from the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, HIV, nerve damage, and Cystic Fibrosis, among other illnesses, supporters say. Membership to True Compassion is free, however, a letter of diagnosis must be included in the application process. Prescriptions can come from a family doctor, medical specialist, naturopathic doctors and health practitioners – anyone with a governmentissued Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) license. Dried marijuana is not an

approved drug or medicine in Canada, according to Health Canada. “ The Gover nment of Canada does not endorse the use of marijuana, but the courts have required reasonable access to a legal source of marijuana when authorized by a health care practitioner,” says a statement on its website. The MMPR, which came into effect in June of 2013, creates conditions for a commercial industry that is responsible for the production and distribution of marijuana for medical purposes, according to Health Canada. They also ensure that Canadians with a medical need can access quality controlled marijuana grown under secure and sanitary conditions. Once Canada Bliss receives a letter of diagnosis from a doctor, it can accept people as members – its combined membership of both its Vancouver and Toronto dis-

pensaries is about 1,600. “From that point, we try to guide our members to a treatment for their ailment. The reality is, (medical) marijuana does cure and heal,” Graham said. “I don’t think there’s anything that it doesn’t help.” The product, at both establishments, is subject to quality control. Staff can inform membership of its effect and potency. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) levels are significantly lower in medical marijuana than it is in marijuana obtained on the street. Information regarding membership is kept private at both Canada Bliss and True Compassion. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette told The Villager she has nothing against medical marijuana. Her only stipulation is that the dispensaries make sure that their users have prescriptions.

transit community

Mayor wants photo radar enforcement Mayor John Tory has requested the province allow the city to make use of photo radar for traffic enforcement. The primary motive for the mayor’s request, it would seem, is to save money on ballooning policing costs. Having cameras installed at traffic lights and elsewhere would prevent the need for expensive uniformed officers. It would also help to boost enforcement levels in precarious traffic areas like school zones. There will be those who say the move is nothing but a cash grab. Of course it is – and a welcome one if it improves traffic enforcement in the city. DANFORTH GARAGE DECISION ON TRACK The TTC will likely decide what to do with the old Danforth Garage later this year. TTC chair Josh Colle will introduce a motion at this week’s board meeting of the transit commission for staff to report in September on the building’s future use. B e a c h e s - E a s t Yo r k Councillor Mary-Margaret

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT McMahon initially requested the TTC look into community uses for the site, located at the intersection of Danforth and Coxwell avenues. The building dates back to 1915 when it was used as a streetcar garage, and then more recently housed buses. Currently, the five-acre site is used primarily for office and storage space. TO APPEAR FIRST AT MAIN STATION wPRESTO

Main will be the first subway station to receive fare gates accessed by Presto. The transit commission announced last year it would begin installation of the gates in 2016, which slide open when a Presto card is tapped. It’s part of the TTC’s work to migrate fare payment to Presto, which is expected to be completed by 2017. At that point, older fare methods like tokens and Metropasses will

have been phased out in favour of Presto. Expect to see the fare gate at Main station in early March. to lower up express fares wmetrolinx

In what might be the least surprising transit news of the year, fares for the Union Pearson (UP) Express are going down by a significant amount. The new fares, beginning March 9, for an adult, oneway ticket are as follows: With a Presto card, Union to Pearson costs $9; Union to Weston is $5.02; and Union to Bloor costs $4.71. Without Presto, Union to Pearson costs $12; Union to Weston costs $5.65; and Union to Blooris $5.30. The writing was on the wall for UP when Metrolinx, which operates the service, announced in February disappointing ridership numbers. Caledonia GO Station The Project

Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Caledonia GO Station. Runnymede Collegiate’s revamped photography program goes digital >>>from page 1 Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-lead school. Art teacher Andrea Lambert said she had applied for the grant three years in a row and questioned whether or not to try yet again. “This is a lesson in perseverance for my students,” Lambert told her audience, who had gathered in the school library. About three years ago, Runnymede Collegiate had a traditional dark room photography program, which Lambert said needed revamping into a digital program. In its first year, there was only one class offered, but as students’ interest grew, so did the number of courses. “Most students don’t have their own cameras,” Lambert said, adding

the school had only 10 cameras to be shared among classes of 20-plus teens. “It’s important for me to allow students to take a camera home, to explore their neighbourhoods. Now, we’ll be able to purchase those things that will help take their work to the next level.” Grade 12 student Brittany Ronaldson, who has been taking visual art classes since Grade 9, said she has always been interested in photography. ‘visual art is an escape’ “Visual art is an escape for me,” she told The Villager. The grant, Ronaldson said, will not only be appreciated by the art students, but “all sectors of the school.”

“It’ll help students to really pursue what they’d like to do,” she said. Best Buy Canada granted 14 schools across Canada with a combined $150,000 in funding for tech-based curriculums. “The applications we received clearly illustrate that as school curriculums advance, students and teachers strive to bring new ideas for learning to the classroom, and with these ideas, the need for upgraded or increased technology in classrooms grows,” Best Buy Canada spokesperson Andrea MacBeth said in a statement. “ The innovative thinking, approaches to learning, and integration of technology into the school culture demonstrated by each of our winning recipients were key to the success of their grant.”

Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca, centre, makes an announcement Tuesday at Union Station’s UP Express lounge about a fare drop to help fill trains.

Province announces fares slashed to help resuscitate UP Express RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Ontario’s Transportation Minister preached patience o n g row i n g t h e Un i o n Pearson’s moribund ridership while expressing confidence numbers will climb as a result of a fare cut. Steven Del Duca confirmed fares for UP will be dropping significantly, to 50 per cent less for travel on the four-stop rail service between Union Station and Toronto Pearson Airport. For residents living along the rail corridor, the fare cuts mirror local GO service, with a price slash of nearly $7 for a one-stop trip between Bloor and Union. The fare change takes effect Wednesday, March 9, right before the March Break holiday. The UP Express has seen a steady reduction in the number of passengers since its launch last year. “Notwithstanding the efforts of Metrolinx (to grow ridership) we continue to be troubled by the fact numbers weren’t coming up as quickly as we like them to,” said Del Duca, who made the announcement at UP’s Union Station stop Tuesday. “So in advance of March Break we

want to put forth a more affordable option for commuters in the region.” Del Duca said record ridership for UP over the Family Day weekend, when rides were free, saw nearly 43,000 people make use of the service, making a convincing case there is solid demand for the service if fares are reasonable. “Our job now is to drive up awareness of the service,” he said. Metrolinx had initially set a target of 5,000 daily riders for UP’s first year of operations. With the fare reduction, Del Duca was optimistic the service will be able to hit that benchmark by June 2016. A recent Metrolinx staff report indicated the cumulative daily UP ridership between November and December 2015 was 2,400. Less clear is how the reduction will affect the province’s stated aim to have UP eventually recover its operating costs. The fare cut is something UP’s critics have called for since pricing for the service was announced before last summer’s Pan American Games in Toronto. Despite praise for the quality of service, the trains since UP’s

June launch – beyond an initial boost during the Games – have remained largely empty, something Del Duca admitted at Tuesday afternoon’s announcement. Even so, TTCriders, one of UP’s most strident critics, was disappointed fares weren’t reduced further. “At double the cost of a token to ride from Dundas West to Union Station the train is still not a mass transit line for all of us,” said the group in a statement. Metrolinx’s board of directors held a special meeting Tuesday evening to formally ratify the price change. New Union Pearson Express fares (taking effect March 9) Adult one way With Presto n Union to Pearson: $9 (was $19) n Union to Weston: $5.02 (was $15.20) n Union to Bloor: $4.71 (was $11.40) Without Presto n Union to Pearson: $12 (was $27.50) n Union to Weston: $5.65 (was $22) n Union to Bloor: $5.30 (was $16.50)
