Night Market designers needed Design a food cart for The Stop’s event LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Stop Community Food Centre’s annual Night Market is billed as a “teeming feast for the eyes, belly, and heart.” Inspired by the night markets of Southeast Asia, it was Danielle Goldfinger, a one-time fundraiser and event co-ordinator at The Stop, who is credited for developing the concept for Toronto after experiencing the Asian open air markets herself. “She thought this concept would be a great way for restaurants to engage with The Stop and for guests to be able to taste-test the city’s best restaurants and local beverage companies,” The Stop’s current events and fundraising co-ordinator Lianne Holland told The Villager. “She was right.” The Stop, situated on Davenport Road, just west of Symington Avenue, is currently accepting proposals from design teams who would like to create unique food >>>organizers, page 8

March of Dimes offers job help

City marks Rare Disease Day on Sunday LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Freelance photographer and local resident Natasha Vaney has been suffering from such afflictions as joint dislocations, violent headaches and low blood pressure her entire life. Doctors thought she may have had Lyme disease or Multiple Sclerosis. It wasn’t until last year that she was diagnosed with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS), an inherited connective tissue disorder. “It is a very rare disease – so rare that most people who have it don’t get diagnosed in their lifetime,” Vaney told The Villager. Vaney’s joint dislocations as a

child were misdiagnosed as growing pains. Her EDS diagnosis came after Vaney suffered a fall, which she is prone to in the winter because the cold drastically affects her circulation. Living with EDS is no walk in the park, she says. “It has not been easy. I used to be so active,” said Vaney, who played

golf, raced sail boats and walked “great distances.” “Now, I’m afraid I will stop walking, stop getting up, that the pain will get so bad that I will need morphine via an IV and that I will not be able to take a shower – so I try to do the best I can each day.” This Saturday, EDS Canada will commemorate Rare Disease Day, a global health awareness initiative, with the lighting of the CN Tower in blue at sundown. The CN Tower is the first Canadian monument to honour Rare Disease Day. EDS Canada is an organization that provides knowledge, advocacy and support to individuals and their families living with EDS. Toronto

won’t be the only Canadian city raising awareness of Rare Disease Day. Science World in Vancouver will be illuminated in blue as well as the sun sets the same evening. “These fantastic sites light the way for unity across the provinces in showing that they support Rare Disease(s) that affect thousands of families in Canada,” EDS Canada said in a statement. “Ehlers-Danlos Canada is pleased to have arranged this event for our members across Canada. May the support we are receiving this year only grow and glow in more provinces in the years to follow.”

Still progress to be made on gender equity W

ith International Women’s Day on March 8, we’re looking at what it means to be female, the relationships between men and women in the workplace and Canadian society and some of the challenges women are facing and how they differ from a century ago. The history of International Women’s Day goes back to New York City in 1908 when women marched for shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. While it may seem hard to believe today, there was a time in both the United States and Canada when the right to vote did not extend to women. It wasn’t until 1919 in Canada that women were given that right. In the United States it was 1920, though some states had allowed women to vote going as far back as the late 1800s. All of which should remind our view us that the issue of women’s rights is still a part of recent Despite gains, history and ongoing news. Locally, in today’s papers women’s rights we talk with Toronto District remain an issue School Board student equity advisor and body image consultant Jill Andrew on the issues women and girls face when it comes to self-esteem and equity. Andrews said an event such as International Women’s Day is a good time to remember that women need to not simply be satisfied that they are at the table when it comes to making decisions in politics, business and their personal lives. “We need to be the people forming the table and finding people to push our ideas forward.” Lorna Marsden, a former president and vicechancellor of York University agrees, there is still work to be done even in a society that appears equitable and tolerant such as ours. “We have made tremendous gains, but we don’t have equal pay, we are still lacking in representation of women in decision-making positions such as business and cultural,” she pointed out. We hope the stories in today’s paper of local, inspiring women serve to get both women and men thinking more about the issue of gender equality and what needs to be done next. Those looking for more information on International Women’s Day events in Toronto, wishing to see our stories with local women of influence, or to add to the conversation with their comments, are invited to visit us online at www.insidetoronto.com

Last-minute budget cuts creating nasty little mess

T

he budget committee had been doing so well under the circumstances. Its new chair, Gary Crawford, had run pleasant and accommodating meetings, absent any of the chiding nastiness and bladder-challenging standoffs with deputations. There had been some trouble with the provincial government, and some really less-than-ideal contortions by the city’s finance department. But it had been going so well, until the very last moments of its deliberations last week. That was when budget committee member Michelle Berardinetti brought up some lastminute, and on the face of it, perplexing amendments. Berardinetti moved to cut some planned staffing enhancements – from two of the city’s accountability offices, the ombudsman and the integrity commissioner, and also from the

david nickle the city complement of planning staff whose duties included helping the city deal with its backlog of heritage conservation districts. The motions were a surprise to everyone watching and at least one of the committee members – Shelley Carroll. She called the planning cuts in particular “a disaster.” The eight additional planners that are no longer in the budget would have let the city work on a more aggressive schedule of assessing and establishing heritage conservation districts. Maybe that didn’t seem like such a disaster on Friday when the motion passed. But on Tuesday, heritage advocates begged to differ. Currently the city has a backlog of 16 neighbourhoods that are candidates for preservation of their

heritage elements, and there are likely more that haven’t been flagged. If the city doesn’t get going on that, then buildings and elements that reflect Toronto’s history will continue to erode – and eventually, vanish. As Richard Longley, president of Architectural Conservancy Ontario, told the planning and growth management committee: “I see that proposal at budget committee as a kind of suicide note. I was astonished that heritage preservation, which contributes so much to so many of the values that make Toronto a city, would be cut.” Advocates for the ombudsman and integrity commissioner have not yet had an opportunity to speak publicly – so let me take a crack at it. Both of those offices represent crucially important checks against bureaucratic and political incompetence and malfeasance. They were established in

legislation in response to political and administrative corruption unearthed in the Bellamy inquiry more than a decade ago. Both offices investigated and shed light on improprieties at the last council and at a staff level that offered real consequences and remedies. Some of those investigations had serious consequences indeed: Giorgio Mammoliti was suspended without pay for taking improper donations; former mayor Rob Ford was nearly tossed from office. Though those cuts were in the interest of “fiscal responsibility,” the method of their delivery indicates something not quite so pure. It is indeed a nasty little mess, that the city’s executive committee and council will either have to wear, or clean up. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Read the book, then come to the cinema and watch the film. The Revue Cinema hosts its Book Revue Thursday, March 26, at 6:45 p.m. with host Geoff Pevere. The topic: Inherent Vice, Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s sprawling detective novel is described as “a dazzlingly shaggy affair in more ways that one.” On the surface, a hard-boiled L.A. noir about a missing girl and the private detective (Joaquin Phoenix) charged with finding her, Inherent Vice is also an almost hallucinatory meditation on the end of the ‘60s as they ran aground on the rocks of the Me Decade. There will be book giveaways and door prizes. A discussion follows the screening. Visit revuecinema.ca for details.

Senior support during the cold winter season Caring for loved ones can be harder in the winter months but there are steps to take to ensure they’re not left out in the cold The past winters have been particularly challenging with temperatures plunging well below normal ranges. With the “Polar Vortex” of 2013 and many extreme cold weather alerts already this season, winter can pose difficulties for even the most hardy of spirits. For the elderly, snow and ice can not only present a challenge, but can be life threatening, as a slip or fall for a senior can result in serious injuries, or worse. During the winter season, it’s especially important to remember those who are vulnerable and require support with their day-to-day lives. What may be considered simple tasks or errands for many of us can take on substantial effort for those who are elderly and physically challenged. For this reason, there are a number of things that should be done to assure that those in need receive the required support to get them through the cold winter months. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Cen-

tre (CCAC) offers a variety of supports and services for the elderly. Following are some simple suggestions from the CCAC on how you can help a senior friend, neighbor or loved one during the cold winter months. 1) Check-Up – The cold weather often brings on challenges that don’t occur during the summer. From frozen pipes to icy walkways, winter can present considerable challenges for seniors. Make sure to check on elderly neighbours or family members regularly to assure that they’re okay. 2) Offer Assistance - Shoveling snow is a difficult task for many seniors, and it’s often recommended that the elderly refrain from this activity. For this reason, it’s helpful to offer assistance to seniors in need by clearing paths and driveways of ice, and salting immediately after a snowfall. This will limit the possibility of a slip or fall that could re-

sult in serious injuries for an older person. 3) Provide Transportation - If you’re able, provide transportation to a senior in need to and from appointments or errands wherever possible. What may seem like a short distance to many of us can be a considerable hurdle for an older person. 4) Lend a Helping Hand – Literally. Many seniors have difficulty walking and some may require the use of walkers or a cane. Where needed, offer your hand or shoulder to lean on to make their journey easier. 5) Be There – Sometimes a simple phone call or quick visit just to make sure that your friend, neighbor or loved one is okay can make a world of difference. For more information about support for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca

No serious lessons in Cannibal! The Musical See it on stage until March 8 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Audiences won’t walk away from Trey Parker’s Cannibal! The Musical with a deeper meaning of life. “There’s no message here. We’re not talking about race or politics,” Mark Andrada, one of the musical’s stars, told The Villager. “The show is just fun. It’s a funny, fun show.” From the mind of South Park and The Book of Mormon creator, Trey Parker’s Cannibal! The Musical is billed as “all singing, all dancing and all flesh eating.” The musical, which continues at the Panasonic Theatre until Sunday, March 8, tells the true story of Alfred Packer, notorious for being the only person ever to be convicted of cannibalism in the U.S. Packer guides a group of miners hailing from Utah, who are on a search for gold in the Colorado Territory. During its quest, the group encounters trappers and native peoples amid lots of tomfoolery before getting lost in the Rocky Mountains. When discovered days later, Packer is the only one to be

found and the sheriff arrests him for cannibalism. Like most of the cast, Andrada plays multiple roles, including a Swan, Victim/ Juror 3, Nutter, Indian Chief, The Executioner, and Cherub 1. “You want to make the characters as defined as possible,” the Bloorcourt-area resident said. Like most of the cast, Andrada’s resume includes sketch comedy and musical theatre. He is a Canadian Comedy Award-winning director, performer and writer, who has performed puppetry with The Canadian Opera Company, clowned with Canadian Stage and Zero Gravity Circus and at Clownz, a comedy club in Quezon City, Philippines. He’s performed

sketch comedy as a member of The Second City and as a guest at The Annoyance Theatre in Chicago. He has appeared on such shows as Covert Affairs, Almost Heroes and Wonderfalls and movies like Fever Pitch. “It’s funny to be doing a musical. I started doing musical theatre in high school,” said the Scarborough born and raised Andrada. “That’s the path I thought I’d take.” However, Andrada says he likes to follow the path of least resistance. “I stopped taking dance and voice lessons. I knew I could go on stage and not sweat so much,” he said with a laugh. He’s always done a bit of comedy, including stand-up, as well. “When you’re successful at comedy, it’s an immediate reaction,” Andrada said. Cannibal! The Musical is getting rave reviews, he said. During a recent performance, the audience gave a partial standing ovation – mid show. “The show’s a lot of fun. We’re having a lot of fun doing it. We all get along,” Andrada said. “We’re running around playing pranks on each other.”

Skating on Grenadier Pond not ruled out for next year DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto parks staff will be looking for ways to allow for safe skating on Grenadier Pond next winter. Those were the marching orders from the city’s Parks and Environment Committee’s Feb. 25 meeting, after committee members heard about the challenges and history of ice skating on the High Park pond. Following media attention, skaters have been taking to the pond in droves to take advantage of the cold weather. But Toronto Parks hasn’t permitted the activity since 2001 according to Parks Director Richard Ubbens. Prior to that, the city and Toronto police’s marine unit monitored the thickness of the ice and then city staff sprayed the surface of the pond to make an even, safe

skating surface. The city finally banned the practise in 2001, following warmer than average winters and in response to a budget crunch. And through all that, Ubbens said, “we have reports of people going through the ice.” In fact, Ubbens said that a skater fell through the ice on the pond earlier this year, just days before news reports drew attention to the city’s current ban on skating at the pond. “We had somebody fall through the ice three days before it got on the CBC,” Ubbens said. He said that if the city is to go ahead and allow skating on the pond, it will require diligence. “In my view of it I would think the program is either run well and thoroughly so we can declare it safe or unsafe, or it’s not,” he said.

Local Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette asked that staff look for ways to do just that. “Skating is a Canadian pastime and so many people are skating on the pond,” she said. “What we’re seeing now is hundreds of people skating, skiing, pushing strollers across the ice. (We need to find out) how can we monitor this to allow people to skate? They’ve been skating since Confederation. I don’t know how we can stop them.” Doucette said that it might be possible to sign the park to let skaters know whether they can use the pond at their own risk, or whether the ice is absolutely too thin for skating. Staff will report back in the second quarter of 2015.

The days are numbered for the Bay-Bloor pedestrian scramble The Bay-Bloor pedestrian scramble is one step closer to extinction thanks to the city’s public works and infrastructure committee. The committee voted 5-1 during its meeting Monday to support a staff recommendation to get rid of the scramble at Bay Street and Bloor Street West which forces car traffic in all directions to come to a halt so pedestrians can freely cross from any side of the four-way intersection. According to staff the negative impact on vehicle traffic is not worth the “modest” benefit to pedestrians. Beaches-East York city councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon voted against. Follow the Pack to our Annual Spring SALE

From demolition to decor we handle the entire job After 15 years in the Bloor West Village area and over 500 stunning completed renovation projects, Instyle Kitchens & Bathrooms makes complete home renovations easy with their simple threestep process. STEP ONE: Call Instyle (416-8334343) to setup a free in-home consultation. STEP TWO: Design, material options, and labour cost are discussed during the in-home consultation with the homeowners. Instyle will review a portfolio of past local projects to clearly outline what is accomplished on a week-to-week basis. New clients can verify those time lines through references from former clients. “We are grateful when former customers allow new customers over for a private viewing of completed projects,” says Instyle

co-owner Gerry Turino, a custom builder and master electrician. “New customers will get a non-biased assessment of our work, and the renovation experience.” STEP THREE: After all design materials have been selected and priced, a detailed labour schedule with cabinet drawings is presented at the Instyle showroom. Building, plumbing and electrical permits are discussed. Owners and longtime Bloor West residents Gerry Turino and Michael Lamarche have the acquired skill set needed to redesign and re-

engineer local area homes, which often consist of a small room with ill-placed windows and far too many doorways. “Michael and I have dealt with almost every type of construction or space planning problem imaginable in these old homes,” says Turino.“We are at a stage where we can react to any problem without a total disruption of the schedule, a complaint we hear about other companies consistently.” For an appointment or further information call 416 833 4343 or visit online at www.ikb.ca

Organizers are encouraging waste-conscious submissions >>>from page 1 carts for its 2015 Night Market, which takes place in June in the Honest Ed’s parking lot and laneway. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, March 15 at midnight. Since its inception in June 2012, The Stop has put a call out for food cart designs that are inspired by its mission “to provide healthy access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges in equality,” said Holland, who added that design teams should look to the markets of Southeast Asia for ideas. “We also like to see where materials are coming from. A large priority for us is limiting waste,” Holland said. “We like to see that designers have thought carefully about where they’re sourcing their materials. For example, second-hand, salvaged goods, ethically sourced materials and what they will do with their cart post-event. If it can have a second life, what is the plan? If not, is it recyclable or compostable? Can the materials be salvaged for something else?” The custom-designed food carts are a significant part of what makes The Stop’s Night Market a successful event. Over the three years, the popular event has raised more than $314,000. Proceeds go towards The Stop’s “frontline services” at 1814 Davenport Rd., including a drop-in, food bank, perinatal program, community action program, bake ovens and markets,

efore Scarborough native Jill Andrew became known for giving empowering speeches to young women about selfesteem and before she provoked deep conservations about female body image and female representation in the media, she was just Jill: a curvy woman with her own set of insecurities and hardships she had to overcome. “As a child I was sexually abused. I was a victim and a survivor of that,” she said. “One of the first things that I had to get over is that I had done nothing wrong. That’s a huge part of it. It doesn’t matter what poster you read or what PSA (public service announcement) comes on, you oftentimes sit with this feeling of what did I do? Was it the way I was dressed? What did I say to egg the person on or entice them?” After years of therapy and support Andrew accepted that what happened wasn’t her fault. “Your body is not to blame, your person is not to blame and that these are bigger issues than an individual thing. These are systems that we’re living with where men predominantly feel as though they have ownership

onnie Dejak is president and chief executive officer of Runnymede Healthcare Centre, a role she has held since 2006. She oversaw the construction of the new state-of-the-art facility at Runnymede and St. Johns roads, which opened in October 2009. She was the 2010 recipient of the World of Difference Award, The International Alliance for Women and was inducted into the 1999 Millennium edition of

over women’s bodies,” she explained. “Looking back over my years now, I started to realize I had to take ownership of me and that’s all I can take ownership for; not somebody else’s wrongdoings because that’s how we grow.” It’s that same self-ownership Andrew lectures about in her keynote speeches at conferences on university campuses across Toronto. Her acceptance of what happened to her and her own body image led her to become founder of the Body Confidence Canada Awards, the Curvy Catwalk Fashion Fundraiser and co-founder of FatinTheCity.com, a plus-size fashion “fatshion” blog. She also doubles as a body image consultant and works for the Toronto District School Board as a student equity program advisor. There she helps plan conferences, events, workshops and opportunities for children to learn and connect with each other and also help shift their perception of gender roles, what women are capable of achieving and self-esteem. “There’s this idea that we (women) should be thankful that we should be at the table. No. We need to be the people forming the table and bringing the ideas to the table and finding people to help

us push our ideas forward. A lot of the work that I try to do is around that,” Andrew told The Villager. During her speeches, Andrew focuses on the longterm negative effects on women and girls as they begin to police their bodies. Selfpolicing, according to Andrew, happens more often than women think; it’s in the form of not going out past a certain time because you could get hurt or not wearing spaghetti straps because you don’t want to be labelled a slut. This follows girls into adulthood, she said, explaining some women mute their opinions to avoid being called “bitch in the boardroom” by the boys club. “It’s all of this self-policing

we do that doesn’t pay attention to the larger systemic issues going on that create the environment where women and girls feel like they have to censor themselves, with what they wear or their ideas,” Andrew said “(If it continues) you start to chip away at your own selfesteem and your own worth and your own knowledge and it happens to women all the time.” Andrew believes it’s time we look at how these images affect a woman financially as well as emotionally and physically. “The body image conversation needs to go deeper, we need to encourage women and girls to think about how a negative self-concept or negative self-worth might

diversity: our strength Chatelaine’s Who’s Who of Canadian Women, among several other accolades. In honour of International Women’s Day, The Villager spoke with her to discuss the status of women. Q: How has your job as president and CEO evolved over the years? How has gender played a role, if any? A: My role has evolved in

the sense that I’ve seen the number of women in senior leadership positions rising in the healthcare industry. Therefore, it appears to me that the value of women in leadership positions may have been realized, resulting in the shift that I’ve experienced. Q: Do you think being a woman informs how you do you job?

A: I have learned to move forward in life with purpose, humility and respect bringing with me a sense of fairness and pride to everything I do. It is important to recognize the vital role we all play in making the world, community, or neighbourhood a better place. Professionally, our hospital plays a vital role in the lives of our patients and

impact your salary. We know that women are missing statistically from board of directors, women are missing from politics,” she said. However, the future isn’t bleak. Andrew said awareness is growing of manipulation tactics used when it comes to perceptions of feminine and masculine ideals. And with that awareness, younger people tend to be more vigilant and reactive online. “I got to tell you they’re more receptive now. I feel like this generation is a frustrated generation. I feel they’re a generation that wants things to be better and are willing to do the work and have the conversations and are willing to do a little more than maybe I did.” their families.... The women in my life have taught me to look at each and every task knowing it will affect the lives of those around us. As a women, a leader, a mentor, I recognize that our diversity is our strength and if fostered can truly achieve our goals. Q; With all your experience, do you have any advice or words of wisdom for other women, perhaps those who are just beginning their careers?

A: It is very difficult to know what opportunities exist. I would say there is tremendous value in volunteering to broaden your horizons. Follow your passion and don’t be afraid to take risks. You should know that failure is part of the path of success and that we are not judged by our failures but by how we used the lessons learned to better ourselves.
