Two-alarm fire damages home on Boxing Day

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A family was robbed of their Christmas gifts after a fire broke out in their Dupont and Dundas West streets area home on Boxing Day. Yet, all was not ruined when Toronto firefighters not only extinguished the blaze, but replaced the majority of the gifts they lost. The story has “a bit of a happy ending,” for the family of 10, Toronto Fire Capt. Mike Strapko told The Villager. After speaking with the family, fire fighters from the Junction fire hall no. 423 paid a visit to the Toronto Fire Fighter Toy Drive Warehouse in Scarborough from which they replaced the damaged presents. “The toy drive is going on right now,” said Strapko. A retiree is stationed at the warehouse at all times, he said, while family, friends and colleagues deliver gifts and toys to shelters and hospitals – especially on Christmas Day. “Even throughout the year, if there’s a family that has suffered a fire, if there’s children, someone will find out what their ages are,” he said. Fire crews were called to the townhouse at 30 Pelham Park Gardens, near Davenport Road and Osler Street, at 10 a.m. last Wednesday. The smoke alarms had activated so everyone escaped without injury, reported Strapko. The fire was caused by “careless discard >>>CREWS, page 6

and emergency admissions over the next two weeks and may expect to experience flow issues when elective surgery re-opens in January. Family physicians and walk-in clinics can also expect to see increased volumes of patients presenting with influenza-like illness (ILI). Many emergency departments and

clinic settings will be implementing additional procedures for preventing influenza transmission, such as additional signage regarding hand hygiene and masking of symptomatic patients in waiting areas, additional personal protective equipment for triage nurses, and segregated waiting areas.

TPH recommends that people get their influenza immunization if they have not already done so. Vaccine is available from family physicians, Occupational Health Services and some pharmacies. High Park Curling Club hosts competition Last year’s finalist Peter Corner among favourites at Jan. 5 and 6 event The High Park Curling Club is hosting one of four Dominion Tankard regional competitions Jan. 5 and 6. And while the High Park club, located at 100 Indian Rd. (near Parkside Drive and High Park Boulevard), didn’t succeed in qualifying a team for the regionals, three other local clubs will have teams competing. • North York’s Donalda Club, skipped by Peterborough native John Epping, who now lives in the Don Mills Road-Eglinton Avenue area of North York; • Etobicoke’s St. George’s Golf and Country Club, skipped by Brampton native Peter Corner; • The Beach’s Royal Canadian Curling Club, skipped by Toronto native Darryl Prebble. Eight teams will vie for two spots

into the Dominion Tankard provincial championship, which is being held in Barrie Feb. 4 to 10. Another notable local curler, North York native Greg Balsdon, who officially curls out of the Loonie Curling Club, a unique one-pad rink north of Kingston, is competing in the regional qualifier being held in the Carleton Place Curling Club just west of Ottawa. Now living in Richmond Hill, he grew up in North York, winning two provincial high school curling titles while at Don Mills Collegiate. Glenn Howard, curling out of Coldwater, will be the team to beat, being the seven-time Ontario Tankard champions and the defending Canadian Brier and world champs (as well as national and world champs in 2007). On his team for the second year

is Wayne Middaugh, who previously won three Ontario Tankards with his own team out of Etobicoke’s St. George’s, as well as one Canadian Brier and world championship. Last season, Peter Corner, curling out of his hometown Brampton club, almost won the Ontario Tankard championship game, only to have Howard snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a spectacular final shot in the 10th end. Corner had Prebble on his team. In 2011, it was Balsdon that made it to the championship game after beating Corner in the semifinal and Epping (who had Prebble as a teammate) in the 3rd-vs-4th playoff game. Also on tap the same weekend is the Scotties Tournament of Hearts regional playdowns.

There are two regional playdowns, hosted by the Omemee Curling Club (in Kawartha Lakes) a n d t h e Wo o d s t o c k Cu r l i n g Club. Two Toronto rinks are playing out of the Omemee regional: Kelly Cochrane from High Park and Jill Mouzar from Donalda. Humberside grad competing Cochrane is a Humberside Collegiate grad (where she also curled) and she and her family are long-time members of the High Park club. Mouzar is a Nova Scotia native now residing in Toronto. The Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be held at the KitchenerWaterloo Granite Club Jan. 21 to Jan. 27.

Registration for the High Park Nature Centre and Colborne Lodge March Break Camp takes place Tuesday, Jan. 8, starting at 9:30 a.m. March Break Discovery Camp runs from March 11 to 15, 9 a.m. to noon hosted by Colborne Lodge and from 12:45 to 3:45 p.m. by the Nature Centre. Sign up for any or all half-day sessions. The cost of a half day is $17.50 plus tax, full day is $35 plus tax. There are reduced rates for booking both sites for multiple days. To register, call the museum at 416-392-6916.

n Be a parliamentary guide

Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash is looking for a few good university students to be parliamentary guides. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Jan. 15. University students who are Canadian citizens and bilingual are invited to apply to join the team, which welcomes visitors to Centre Block and answers questions; interprets Canada’s political history and legislative process, the art and architecture of the Parliament buildings, the Peace Tower, the Memorial Chamber; adapts the content of the tour to the needs of groups. For information, visit www.parl. gc.ca/guides

n Off-leash park work starts

Construction on the new dog off-leash area has begun on the lakeshore. Being healthy helps community

N

ow that we’re already three days into 2013, a number of our readers may already be struggling with the New Year’s resolutions they made Tuesday morning. Don’t fear, however, as the City of Toronto’s Public Health department is available to offer you some help. “If your New Year’s resolution is to be healthier, Toronto Public Health (TPH) is here to support you throughout the year,” said Catherine Clarke, manager of healthy living, in a press release this week. That’s good, because healthy residents benefit the entire community in so many ways. People who feel better have more energy, and are able to our view be more involved and effective members of their workforce, their Public health families and their communities. A healthier population as a whole can help you also eases stresses and costs on reach goals our health care system. So often, well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions are quickly tossed aside because they are just too hard to accomplish and those who make them become discouraged. That’s where TPH is offering some specific help to local residents. For those who want to quit smoking, TPH has 1,000 free quit kits available for residents. The kits include sugarless gum, a stress ball, a toothbrush and other items to help those trying to quit smoking deal with their cravings. Those looking for some personal advice, can also call a TPH nurse at 416-338-7974. There’s more specific information on quitting smoking online at www.toronto.ca/health/smokefree/quittingsmoking There’s also help for those looking to get more exercise or improve their eating habits in 2013. TPH advises residents to eat healthy by cutting down on portion sizes, reading labels for calorie and sodium counts, and asking restaurant staff for nutritional information when ordering food. Many city restaurants already offer such information online. There are also TPH registered dieticians available to offer advice by calling 416-338-7600, and more info is online at www.toronto.ca/health/nutrition One of the best ways to start getting healthier is to get more exercise, and TPH says that’s as simple as just getting out into your neighbourhood and taking a walk. For inspiration, there’s a pedometer lending program offered through Toronto Public Libraries. More info at www.toronto.ca/health/walkintohealth Walking is easy and it’s also a great way to get to know your community better. We encourage all our readers to take that first step to better health in 2013. newsroom

Peace on council a long shot for 2013

A

mid all the handwringing about vacant mayor’s offices and crumbling highways, one might be forgiven for missing one of the most reliable news stories of the winter months. Toronto is making a budget, and over the next few weeks, will be performing the final pieces of the ritual to make it complete. Late last year, the city’s budget committee finished their tinkering with the $9.4 billion budget. It was (and remains) a plan designed to attract a minimum of tinkering at council. Budget Chief Mike Del Grande moved at the end of the process to increase property taxes a sliver more than the original proposal had intended — they’re going up two per cent rather than 1.95 per cent — and allocated the $1.15 million to restore services in areas where citizens had made what he considered a good case. That didn’t happen last year, and when the budget proceeded to council, councillors tore it to pieces and rebuilt it – $15 million fatter – pulling money from reserves to do so. Del Grande doesn’t want to see that happen again this year;

THE CITY

david nickle

so much so that he’s vowed to quit if council does anything else with the plan he’s presented. Some of his colleagues have snickeringly suggested this might be an excellent way to find themselves a new budget chief. But really, the budget going forward will be difficult to make changes on. The budget cuts firefighter positions, and as a policy move council might reverse that. Similarly, the trimmed police service budget approved by the Toronto Police Services Board and scorned by Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair might get another look. Council could look at restoring money to child care, homeless shelters and other pieces of social infrastructure. And there are some on council, like Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks, who are concerned the city is paying too much cash for capital projects such as road

work, comparing the move to buying a house with all the money up front. The mayor (because he’s the kind of mayor he is) might, if still in office by the time the budget’s debated mid-January, take issue with that property tax hike. And on the matter of the Gardiner Expressway, the budget debate could take an off-ramp into a long discussion over whether it’s worth the $500 million the capital budget’s allocated over the next decade to repairs to the elevated highway, or to just go down the road the last council started on, to tear a large portion of it down. But is council going to come together, as it did around Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Josh Colle last year, and actually change any of these things? Nobody ever made any money betting on peace at Toronto Council, and I won’t now. But it’s going to take a pretty significant effort by Ford opponents to get under the hood of the 2013 budget and make serious changes. n David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall columnist. To the editor: Re: ‘Mayor’s mandate must continue despite ruling: reader,’ Letters, Dec. 14. I find it most interesting that people like letter writer David C. Searle are pleased Mayor Rob Ford does not support unions. I gather the letter writer i s n o t e m p l oy e d by a union, therefore unions are wrong. Years ago when I started working there were no unions and when men tried to unionize a company, they were often beaten for the attempt to do so. These brave men brought about wonderful changes for many of the workers. No more 60-hour weeks with poor pay. No more overtime with maybe $1 for supper money. The union would defend a worker if they were fired for no reasonable reason. It is not the unions that are causing the upset in today’s economy. If union jobs are wiped out, the letter writer would be surprised at the change back to the “good old days” of long hours and low wages – not only in union jobs. Joy Taylor

Crews from seven fire stations called to scene >>>from page 1 of smoking articles,” which caused a mattress to catch fire. “ The fire was knocked down pretty quickly,” said Strapko. By 10:13 a.m., crews had the blaze under control. The damage is estimated at $30,000. Crews from seven fire stations, including Jane and Dundas West streets, the

Junction, Lambton Avenue, Dupont and Dufferin streets and Lansdowne Avenue, north of Queen Street West, responded to the call. It took as many as 45 fire fighters and 12 trucks to extinguish the two-alarm fire. Unable to return to the house for at least several days, the family is staying with friends for the time being, said Strapko.

Catholic school board holds kindergarten registration Parents wishing to register their children for kindergarten at one of the Catholic board’s 167 elementary schools in Toronto can do so starting on Tuesday. The Toronto Catholic D i s t r i c t S c h o o l B o a rd (TCDSB) invites new families with children born in 2009 to register for kindergarten. To accommodate parents’ schedules, the board will also host evening registration sessions during the week of Jan. 14. Parents are asked to phone their local Catholic school for specific dates and times. “Kindergarten is a time of wonder, awe and learning,” TCDSB board chair Ann Andrachuk said in a statement. “It is an exciting

time for children and their families and represents a major threshold in a child’s life at a critical stage of development.” FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN The Full-Day Early Lear ning K indergar ten Program is set to be fully implemented in all TCDSB schools by 2015-2016. During its first year of implementation in 2010, the province funded 63 full-day classrooms for 1,638 students in 28 schools across the TCDSB. Now in its third year of implementation, the board today offers the program in 199 classrooms, serving 5,714 students in 83 schools.

“We are dedicated to nurturing our students spiritually, academically, physically, socially, and emotionally through a faith-based curriculum in a caring, Catholic environment,” TCDSB Director of Education Bruce Rodrigues said in a statement. SPECIALIZED SERVICES The TCDSB also offers a number of specialized kindergarten services: the Kindergarten Intervention and Needs Program (KIND) is provided for students who are having difficulty adjusting to school and supports a child’s ability to follow classroom routines, develop social skills, and strengthen academic

abilities; the Kindergarten Language Program delivers intensive language and literacy support to students in senior kindergarten who have delayed oral language development. Parents or guardians wishing to register their kids at a TCDSB are required to bring the following documents to registration: the child’s birth certificate (Certificate of Citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status); the child’s Catholic Baptismal Certificate (or other proof of Catholicity); the child’s Ontario Health Card and Immunization Record; proof of residency in Toronto. Activist launches blog to report aggressive motorists Former bike courier recounts incident near Bloor, Concord RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A Toronto activist wants cyclists on the receiving end of hostile behaviour from drivers to share their negative experiences online. After a series of hostile interactions with motorists, Astrid Idlewild decided to launch a Tumblr blog dedicated to exposing the actions of aggressive motorists. Now, Idlewild is inviting fellow cyclists who have suffered intimidation and harassment to document their experiences and post them on A Toronto Driver Went After Me! , in the hopes of exposing notorious drivers. “The idea is anyone can visit the site and submit something and that way it becomes a collaborative source of content,” said Idlewild on Fri. Dec. 28. She suggested cyclists

make notes of important details such as licence plate numbers and the make and colour of the automobile and to write down the entire experience as soon as possible. She also suggested taking pictures but to be cautious of inciting an angered motorist further. The site also contains a link to reporting the incident with Toronto Police Services. In December, Idlewild herself had hostile encounters on two different occasions with irate motorists, each time necessitating contacting the police. In the first interaction, Idlewild was confronted by a motorist at Concord Avenue and Bloor Street West following his vehicle striking her left arm while she was cycling west. The driver was charged by police. Her most recent experience took place in mid-December

SEEKING SEEKING NEW NEW BOARD BOARD MEMBERS MEMBERS The Swansea Town Hall is the former Village of Swansea Municipal building owned and funded by the City of Toronto. tion of Bathurst and Dupont Streets, and inspired her to create the blog, where she

posted a full account of the experience where she attempted to fend off the vehicle as it attempted to push her out of the lane. “His SUV drifted/edged over the broken white line, trying to nudge me rightward. I put out my gloved hand, defensively making contact with his SUV. I was still in the left area of the right lane,” she writes.” This prompted him to sharply veer his SUV rightward, trying to either throw me off road or strike me with his SUV.” According to Idlewild, cyclists often allow themselves to be bullied because they are not aware of provincial traffic regulations, which permit them to occupy the entire right lane. “I guess what I’m hoping to do with blogging and Tweeting and documenting is to show there are traffic laws that let cyclists occupy an adequate amount of space and provide a safety buffer,” she said. Another issue for cyclists is the lack of a comprehensive bike lane network, with exist-

ing infrastructure so limited it ends up being confusing to cyclist and motorist alike, said Idlewild, who holds a degree in urban planning from McGill University. “The approach we’ve taken in Toronto is nothing’s ever been centrally planned or standardized throughout the city in a way that is legible to a cyclist and driver alike,” she said pointing to differences in sharrows, shared lane markings indicating a bicycle can travel in the lane, as a chief source of confusion. Idlewild, who was formerly a bike courier, said having more bike lanes are important, but equally important is educating motorists of their legal responsibility to share the road with other traffic besides cars. “It returns to the driver having a belief in their mind they have an entitlement to the road wherever they see fit,” she said. “If they don’t like sharing space with a cyclist that’s when they take advantage of the situation, being a bigger force against a smaller one.”
