Eleven Division Supt. Heinz Kuck is embarking on his second fundraising dog sled expedition to raise money for Victim Services Toronto. He heads out Feb. 25 to James Bay.
Police superintendent to take on dog sled expedition for charity LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Eleven Division Supt. Heinz Kuck has upped the ante for his second fundraising dog sled expedition in the name of Victim Services Toronto. This year’s excursion, Wednesday, Feb. 25 to Friday, March 6, is taking Kuck on a 300-kilometre, 10-day, nine night trek from Fraserdale, north of Cochrane, to James Bay – a significant increase from last year’s 120 kilometre, three-nights and four days in Algonquin Park. “Part of my being able to capture the hearts and minds of Torontonians, to open their eyes to the plight of victims, is to up the ante,” Kuck told The Villager, adding this journey will be more difficult and aggressive in especially frigid temperatures. “Upping the ante makes it more interesting.” Kuck surpassed his $5,000 fundraising goal last year hitting $8,800. This year, he’s aiming for $7,500, but is optimistic he’ll raise as much as $10,000. When choosing his charitable adventures, Kuck looks to the country’s heritage. Last summer, he completed a half-

marathon paddle on Lake Ontario. Kuck was inspired to delve into Canada’s heritage for his next charitable adventure. “I looked at snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hockey,” said Kuck before arriving at dog sledding. An avid outdoorsman and life-long dog owner, it is the ideal sport for Kuck. ‘Life changing’ “It was life-changing,” recalled the top cop of last year’s expedition. Through Chocpaw Expeditions, Kuck learned how to harness the dogs, how to steer the sled and how to brake. Steering a sled with six dogs is not the most straightforward of tasks. When going uphill or through deep snow, the driver must get off the sleigh to assist the dogs. Same goes for going down a steep embankment – “so the sled doesn’t over-run the dogs,” Kuck said.
A sled weighs 50 pounds, he said, so the dogs need support. As part of his training, Kuck is hiking two to three hours a day. He said he’ll rely on his vast hiking, camping and canoeing experience. Kuck will be part of a threemember team driving Alaskan Sled Dogs, including guide Jamie Sands of Chocpaw Expeditions, and Phil Jones, a native of North Wales, UK. He will be flying in from Wales to join the expedition, Kuck said. Jones, an ice rescue expert, was part of a three-person team that climbed Denali in Alaska and climbed in the European Alps and Ouray Colarado. “He has completed a route with dog teams through the mountains of northern Sweden,” Kuck said. Victim Services Toronto is an organization close to Kuck’s heart. A non-profit agency, Victim Services helps those in crisis 24 hours, seven days a week. The only one of its kind in the city, Victim Services supports people in the immediate aftermath of crime or tragedy.

very stage of life has its challenges, and each has its growing pains, advantages, disadvantages and a renewed opportunity for acceptance. However, living out and facing your golden years is a unique stage of life. As you face your mortality, your body seems to be working against you and your mind is not far behind. This is the story portrayed in the Village Players latest production, Quartet by Ronald Harwood, as four former stars of the English opera world find themselves all living out their retirement years in an old age residence for musicians. Because they were once a famous singing quartet, reliving their glory days as recognized stars is hard to escape since they are faced with one another, and the memories they made together, every single day. A couple of the foursome take it better than others, like Wilf (Aaron Marcus) and Reggie (Paul Brett), but Cissy (Heli Kivilaht), while delightfully sweet, is suffering from the onset of dementia and Jean (Anne Shepherd), who is the last to arrive to the home, just can’t relate to the woman she now sees in the mirror. Jean likens her living situation to a prison. Cissy thinks she’s still going to, or others are coming back from, Karachi, India, which is where her parents were when she was a child. Meanwhile, Reggie is mostly quiet until Jean shows up, his ex-wife who scorned him decades ago, and Wilf, a widower, passes his days by making inappropriate sexual jokes to try and lighten the mood. Every person needs a purpose in life, a reason to get up in the morning, and

Paul Brett, Heli Kivilaht, Aaron Marcus star in Quartet,
these four friends are given their raison d’être when they are asked to sing the finale piece in the home’s annual gala that commemorates the great Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday. It has been over 30 years since this quartet has appeared on stage together, or experienced the spotlight. Cissy, Wilf and Reggie think it’s a great idea and opportunity, while Jean on the other hand needs some convincing. They make a compromise and come up with a unique way to satisfy everyone, and close the gala. This is a fantastic sliceof-life story that is relatable whether you are in your 20s or your 80s. The characters’ stories and feelings could be anyone’s, and if you know someone who is finding aging challenging you may relate to this show even more. Marcus’ portrayal of the witty one-liner Wilf brings so much comic levity to this show, and his acceptance of ‘what is’ makes you feel comfortable and
welcome in their world. Kivilaht’s portrayal of Cissy is magnificent, and she embodies the role in a way that makes her endearing yet vulnerable. Shepherd gives an amazing performance, realistically and honestly portraying the bitterness that is often felt when the person you once were doesn’t match the person you are today in your mind. As well, the underlying tension between she and Brett as Reggie, who plays his role in a way that you never quite know what he is thinking until he bursts, are some of the most endearing moments in the show. This show is funny, contains honest dialogue, and a realistic portrayal of the struggles we face in trying to make peace with our past and to move forward with purpose, grace and optimism, whatever stage of life we’re at. Quartet runs until Jan. 31, 8 p.m., at the Village Playhouse, 2190 Bloor St. E. Tickets are $22 and $18 for students and seniors. For tickets, please call 416-767-7702 or visit www.viallgeplayers.net
Just 16 months after Dr. Laurie Morgan and his wife Muriel celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, the one-time Swansea Village physician has died. Morgan died on Friday, Jan. 2. He was 94. He is survived by his wife and the couple’s five children: Bruce, Scott, Heather, Brenda and Kathryn, and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. For more than three d e c a d e s , Mo r g a n w a s Swansea’s doctor. After returning home from the navy, Morgan practiced out of a Lansdowne and Wallace avenues office before opening a practice on Coehill Drive. In the days before OHIP, Morgan’s patients would pay him in bags of potatoes and slabs of bacon. “Laurie tended to many Swansea residents with care and compassion in his medical practice,” said Swansea Historical Society (SHS)
president Dr. Robert (Bob) Roden. “Initially, he was the only general practitioner in Swansea, and he not only made house calls, but he also participated in the delivery of many Swansea-ites.” Married in 1943, Morgan and his wife purchased their house on Grenadier Heights in 1950 – made possible by a significant settlement that followed a car accident in 1949. For many years, the couple served with distinction on the board of directors of the SHS. Morgan was in charge of arranging its guest speakers while Muriel provided refreshments. The couple received 20-year volunteer service awards from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration in recognition of their long and dedicated service to the Swansea Historical Society. “Shortly before Christmas, I had a pleasant chat with Laurie never imagining it would be the last opportunity,” Roden said. “He will be truly missed.”
In celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary, the couple renewed their vows at The Messiah Church on Sept. 22, 2013. That summer, The Villager sat down with the two to reflect on their successful union. When asked the secret to their marriage’s longevity, Morgan quipped, “My wife won all the arguments.” Every summer, Morgan closed his practice for a month so the family could go out on their boat. The Morgans were known for their New Year’s Eve parties on Grenadier Pond where they’d have a bonfire that drew more than 100 people. “Laurie was a sincerely religious man and he looked forward to his passing as a new beginning,” Roden said. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Turner and Porter in Bloor West Village. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Muriel and her extended family and friends,” said Roden on behalf of the historical society.

Organizations often need to adapt to better serve communities
Write us
O
rganizations grow. Sometimes they shrink. But they have to evolve to remain relevant and cost-effective. In the case of United Way Toronto, sometimes they merge with another organization – the United Way of York Region. That’s one example of charitable merger aiming to have the whole of the two parts better serve the people of the region. We think it’s worthwhile for smaller, communitybased organizations to look around at like-minded groups, or others competing for the same charitable dollar and see if they can serve their community better through merger or at least a partnership. Some questions to ask: Is the organization meeting its stated goals? Is the organization having the community impact it desires? Is there overlap or duplication of effort happening with another organization? Is it a struggle to find members our view to do the volunteer work or to sit on oversight boards? Can admincosts be reduced? Could Merger can istrative fresh ideas surface when two groups work together? help better These are just a few of the quesorganizations tions that can provide healthy introspection. Think about it. If an organization finds there are certain challenges that are increasingly difficult to overcome, why wouldn’t they explore different ways of approaching those challenges by reaching out to other organizations and considering ways they can join forces? It doesn’t have to be an outright merger. An informal partnership can go a long way toward helping both parties out. For example, perhaps the opportunity exists for the pooling of resources, which can help streamline costs, avoid duplication and ensure the efforts of the volunteer base are deployed as efficiently as possible. The opportunities that can be created are intriguing: knowledge-sharing, new ideas, an energized volunteer base. All contribute to the combined strength of a collective whole. The keys to any successful partnership – however formal it may be – are the ability to incorporate the unique needs of the component parts to create a whole that’s better equipped to face the challenges of the day. It’s that standard by which partnerships should be measured. When opportunities exist to better serve a community’s needs, it’s always worth exploring. Organizations that ask themselves those questions will get those opportunities.

Handed lemons; opposition makes lemonade
P
laying opposition at city council is delicate work. With no official party system and in its place a coalition of disparate interests in orbit of a – usually – popular mayor, it’s tough to get traction. Contrarian councillors outside that orbit are left to spend their days scouring agendas, waiting for dis-incentived senior staff to return calls and emails, and working the press gallery to try and get their ideas in front of the public. The pitfalls are many. During the David Miller era, right-of-centre councillors stumbled around for years before forming a coalition called The Responsible Government Group that tried with scant success to critique the mayor’s agenda. Councillors on the left took a different approach with Mayor Rob Ford in 2010, taking the give-himrope-to-hang-himself tack until finally, he did so. It’s clear neither approach is going to work with sober,
david nickle the city steady old John Tory – who has an ambitious agenda and the resolve to keep potential opposition away from committees that might affect that agenda. And so it is that on Monday, progressive councillors adopted another strategy: if the mayor gives you lemons, make lemonade. The lemons Tory gave Gord Perks, Mike Layton, Sarah Doucette, Joe Cressy and Maria Augimeri were seats on the Parks and Environment Committee: a committee historically known for light agendas and little influence. That will likely not be the case this term. As of Jan. 12, the committee has a subcommittee: the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Subcommittee. Chairing it will be Perks, who in addition to representing Parkdale-High Park has had a long career as an environ-
mental advocate. Also on the committee are Doucette, Layton and Cressy. The subcommittee will begin holding public meetings promptly, to talk about ways in which the city can move into a leadership role in battling climate change, worldwide. It will be awkward: climate change mitigation can be expensive, and politically challenging, as it enters into areas where Torontonians are divided: everything from green energy programs to anti-car initiatives and the dreaded “bag tax” from the Miller era. One courting the redmeat conservative support from Ford Nation will have a hard time backing much of that agenda. But failing to back some of that agenda will play just as badly with the centre-left and pure centre voters, for a mayor hoping to maintain a broad base of support. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

Library patron thanks finder of lost money To the editor: In the days before Christmas I "lost" a $100 bill when it accidently fell between the pages of my library book when I'd placed it into my tote bag. Fo r t w o w e e k s I searched for it in the house where I had lost it with no luck then on a long shot I checked with the Runnymede library. A miracle. Someone browsing the returned book now back on the shelf had found the money and handed it to the librarian who was pleased to return it to me today. I so appreciate this unknown person's honesty and would invite them to go to the library to pick up a small thank you from me over the next few days. Pat Bolton

Miller’s library exhibit displays her own ‘brand of silliness’ >>>from page 1 future,” Miller told The Villager. “In 2003, I developed Boris as an alternative to the aggressive robots who seem bent on global domination. Boris is gentle relic of the retro future who doesn’t know how to fit in to our world, but certainly doesn’t want to take control over it.” A decade later, the Bloor West Village resident began
painting images of Boris, which she exhibited at conventions where she was selling copies of her graphic novel. It was another way of generating enthusiasm for the book. Last summer, Miller participated in the ‘Future is Now’ group exhibit at the Hashtag Gallery in the Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood. Her exhibition, Robot of Leisure, takes place at
Runnymede library, 2178 Bloor St. W., in the second floor gallery, until the end of January. Toronto Public Library (TPL) provides artist space in 12 branches across Toronto. “I am delighted to have been chosen as January’s artist and honoured that the TPL’s Art Selection Committee was willing to take a chance on me and permit me this opportu-
nity to display my brand of silliness,” Miller said. While writing is Miller’s passion, she says she has never been content to master just one skill. “I tend to go where my ideas and creative whims take me and develop the skills to serve the project or the story I need to tell,” she said. Miller went back to school as a mature student to study
advertising and graphic design, graduating from Humber College in 2008. She moved to Bloor West Village from the U.S. in late 2006. “We love it. Everything we need is within walking distance – from the fresh veggies at Young & Sons to the bread pudding at Bryden’s,” she said. Miller has two Robot of
Leisure projects currently in the works. One is a short graphic novel about Boris participating in a cocktail robotics competition while the other is an illustrated guide to entertaining as told by Boris. It’s comprised of drink and food recipes and party tips.

The closure, which took place last weekend from Union to St. Andrew stations, is the first of a series planned between now and March to put the finishing touches on the TTC’s $137 million top-tobottom renovation of Union Station in time for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Part of the remaining work includes installing a 152-metre wall dividing the Union and Yonge platforms made up of glass panels adorned with art. Three more subway closures are planned. Winners were recently announced for a contest organized by the city to promote its mobile app used to log the frequency and distance of trips made on bicycle. Since it was launched last May, the Toronto Cycling App has recorded over 65,000 trips made throughout the city, giving cycling planners a better idea where Toronto’s bike network could be strengthened in the future. As part of the contest, prizes were given to users of the app ranging from memberships to Bike Share Toronto to the grand prize: a new bike worth $700. The app is available for download for Android and the iPhone. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT
