The developer of a Junction Triangle residential loft project has created some animosity among several of the neighbours for its choice of promotional material. Windmill Development is in the midst of converting the interior of the former Perth Avenue Methodist Church at the corner of Perth and Wallace avenues into more than 40 modern lofts, now under construction, with occupancy scheduled for this summer. They’re called the Union Lofts. It’s not so much the transformation of the former church that has local residents upset, but the developer’s slogan. It has prompted Daniel Masih, who lives just blocks from the one-time place of worship, to circulate a petition among his neighbours. “It’s blasphemy to use (the phrase) ‘Praise the Loft,’” Masih >>>DEVELOPER, page 13

Davenport Village turns into a ‘jewel’ community Residents and councillor working to transform Hydro One property into greenspace LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Davenport Village is ready for its close-up. The community-withina-community at Davenport R o a d a n d L a n s d ow n e Avenue boasts a large park and playground at its centre surrounded by a one-time railway factory turned into an authentic residential loft building, with townhouses, condos and a soon-to-be built grocery store and bank. The icing on the cake includes a coffee shop and pub that are in the midst of construction. “It’s turned out so much better than I had hoped for,” said Matt Park, founder and president of the Davenport Village Community Association. “We came out of nothing – we were a neighbourhood that folks thought wasn’t going to be transformative and we turned out that way.” There are two parcels of land along Davenport Road at Foundry Avenue that are owned by Hydro One. Currently, they are cordoned off by a chain link fence topped with barbed wire. Davenport Councillor Cesar Palacio alongside the community association is working on brokering a deal with Hydro One to reclaim the land as public green space. Park credits the councillor for helping to secure designated funding for the Greenline Gateway project, which has gotten the go-ahead. “I’m very proud to work with the community to create vibrancy. People are very excited – I’m very excited,” Palacio said. “I want to see those lands be beautified.” These two parcels are links of a linear park, not unlike the West Toronto Railpath, Park said.

Davenport Village Community Association president Matt Park stands in front of the former Powerhouse, a heritage building that is in the midst of being transformed into a coffee shop and pub.
The reclaimed green space will serve as a gateway to Davenport Village with a wrought iron fence and pillars whose brick will be the same colour as those of the foundry lofts. The project will include gardens and chess boards, Park said. Work on the project is set to start this spring. “Davenport Village is going through a tremendous transformation as we speak. It has become a jewel in the west end of the city,” Palacio said. “It’s just beautiful.” Park and his wife moved into a ‘Phase 1’ Davenport Village townhouse four years ago. A year later, he created the community association to serve the 3,800 residents who live there. “We’re a neighbourhood of kids and families,” he said. A feasibility study is set to be done in the spring for a crosswalk at Foundry Avenue and Davenport Road. The crosswalk would be constructed adjacent a
set of stairs that lead up to Earlscourt Park, which have yet to officially open. Park grew up in Etobicoke and lived downtown for a stint with his wife before moving into Davenport Village. He said he happened to speak to an elderly Portuguese woman who told him, ‘This is a great neighbourhood, you should come here.’ Balzac’s Coffee Roasters is set to open in the former Powerhouse, a heritagedesignated building situated at Foundry Avenue and Powerhouse Street. Alongside the coffee shop, Balzac’s will open a pub. A meeting will be held in February to discuss the Greenline Gateway project. The Davenport Village Community Association meets once a month. High Park artist channels Armenian genocide onto canvas to raise awareness
| BLOOR WEST VILLAGER | Thursday, January 29, 2015
community
Arleen McCallum hopes to publicly showcase artwork LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Holocaust and the genocide in Rwanda, where an estimated one million Rwandans were killed in 1994, are well-known tragedies in modern history. Perhaps little known is the Armenian genocide, the first genocide of the 20th century, which saw two million Armenians living in Turkey eliminated from their historic homeland through forced deportations and massacres from 1915 to 1918. High Park-area resident and artist Arleen McCallum hopes to raise awareness of the massacre through a mixed-media piece she has created in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in Turkey. The centennial will be marked through events around the world on April 24. Her work, titled Hepimiz E r m e n i y i z ( We a re a l l Armenian), also acknowledges the assassination of Armenien journalist and editor Hrant Dink, who was killed in Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007. Dink was murdered for continuously maintaining the Armenian genocide did actually occur, an allegation considered a crime against the state. Inspired to visit Turkey for its architecture, art and culture – particularly its rugmaking – McCallum said her travels prompted her to learn more about its history.

Arleen McCallum has created a mixed media piece to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in Turkey.
“Then Hrant Dink was murdered and I found myself focusing my attention – and my work – on the historic plight of the Turkish Armenians and the issue of freedom – freedom of speech and of religion,” she said. McCallum remained glued to the TV to watch hundreds of thousands of Turks, Armenians, Muslims, Jews and Christians march in the streets of Istanbul to mourn Dink and protest his murder. Many carried signs that said, ‘Hepimiz Hrant Dink’iz’ (We are all Hrant Dink) and ‘Hepimiz Ermeniyiz’ (We are all Armenian). “It was the masses of people in the streets that really got my attention,” said McCallum during an interview at her home. “I hadn’t known about the Armenian genocide. I started reading about it. There’s this whole Turkish denial – ‘We didn’t do it, it was just part of the war.’”
To produce the piece, a diptych in acrylic and mixed media, McCallum experimented with recycled materials like foil, fabric and found objects as well as archival photographs. She wanted to create an art work that would “bear proper witness to a disastrous historical event and the suffering and bravery of those who were targeted.” Although, she didn’t want to include any of the “horrible” and “barbaric” images of the genocide. The work includes portraits of Armenian survivors and witnesses, the Armenian flag, a reference to Dink’s funeral procession and a map marking the sites of concentration camps and massacres. McCallum hopes to display the artwork publicly in honour of the centennial. For further info about McCallum’s commemoration of the Armenian genocide, visit www.arleenmccallum.ca

ith Black History Month starting Sunday, members of Toronto’s black community are looking at not only their history but their
future. In today’s edition (see story on page 6), we look at the Black Experience Project that will be seeking input on what it means to be a member of the Greater Toronto Area’s 400,000-strong black community. Some 1,800 residents will be interviewed as part of the project, and organizers expect the answers to be as diverse as the community itself. A project of such scope has never been undertaken in the local black community before, despite a history that goes back to the 1700s in the Toronto area. Karen Carter of Heritage Toronto, one of the more than two dozen partners in the project, said the GTA’s black community has layers of identity – some tracing their ancestors to the Underground our view Railroad, others arriving from the Caribbean in the 1970s or more recently from Africa. How those difOur black ferent ancestries view themselves community as a community, many of differing faiths spread out in neighbourhas layers hoods across the GTA, will be one of the key findings the project is of identity aiming to discover. “It’s going to answer some questions we’ve all asked,” said North York filmmaker Ryan Singh of the project. The project’s organizers are clear there is not a single black experience, but rather many different experiences. However, organizers say there are also experiences that all members of the black community share that are unique to them and not experienced “by most other immigrant or ethnic communities in the GTA.” The information from the project should be both fascinating and valuable. For more on the Black Experience Project, go to http://bit.ly/1uTgPiZ For those looking to learn more about events planned in Toronto for February’s Black History Month, we’ve also got lots of information in our story today, including local listings. Many of Toronto’s libraries are hosting events during the month, but there are also concerts and dinners to celebrate Black History Month in Toronto. We’ll be paying for the fruits of Tory’s budget in years to come
I
n 2011, former Mayor Rob Ford and Toronto City Council made a very short-sighted move. Faced with a budget surplus from the previous administration, the council and mayor decided to use it all, offer a property tax freeze that no one asked for and wasn’t sustainable. In subsequent years, it made Toronto’s financial system more precarious, because by using one-time funding (in that case a surplus), city services were instantly outsized as compared to reliable revenue. It develops that in 2015, John Tory and the new council are doing something similar. In order to provide a budget that improves city services on a number of fronts, Toronto will be borrowing $86 million from the provincial government, to be repaid with interest. That loan will pay for
david nickle the city services the city has now and for improvements too, reversing many of the cuts made during the Ford years and adding some more. Life will be easier in Toronto in 2015 on a number of fronts. But because the marginal service improvements rest on a marginal revenue source, 2016 will be another matter. Whether children can continue to ride free on the Toronto Transit Commission will depend on whether council can bear to cut services elsewhere. The Ford administration brain trust was well aware that the 2011 tax freeze meant that city council would have no choice but to impose austerity measures in 2012. One might expect that the Tory administra-
tion’s brain trust is similarly far-sighted. Last year, City Manager Joe Pennachetti, thinking to retire, told council very seriously that Toronto’s public service is running lean now, and that the city’s service levels cannot sustain more trimming. Taxes, indeed, would have to rise in the future if council is to afford the services that it had in 2014. So what is to become of us next year? It is difficult to say. Over the course of the campaign, Tory displayed his conservative bona fides; in the months following, he reached out to a more broadly-based constituency. And with this budget, he will have settled us into a corner. How we get out of it is anybody’s guess. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. All year round, High Park is a hot spot for activity. Runners in the park, families enjoying the outdoors and yogis who frequent the numerous studios in the area turn to FLOW-Active for their active wear. The shop located at 2237 Bloor St. West, is known for their stylish quality clothing and their spectacular and personal customer service. Formerly known as One Tooth, FLOW-Active was a franchise of the Vancouver-based yoga, active and lounge wear brand. Now, as FLOW-Active, the shop is selling eight to 10 active wear brands designed and manufactured in Canada. “We went independent because our customers were asking for more variety,” says owner Chad Wenzel. “We found out there were all kinds of brands being made in Canada, and now we are able to sell them.” The shop carries stylish active wear for men and women, for activities ranging from yoga, running and the gym, to a casual
day at home. Brands include Lazy Pants, a line of sweatpants made in Toronto, Karma and Tonic, both manufactured in Vancouver. All the stock in the store is refreshed monthly. Community is also a part of the FLOW-Active business model, and once again the shop will be running a free Yoga in High Park series this summer to encourage community members to come together and discover yoga. Yogis can feel great knowing they are not only supporting local businesses, they are also purchasing ethically
manufactured quality items. “I like knowing what I wear and what we sell is made in a safe place and the workers are being paid a fair wage,” says Wenzel. Another benefit to buying Canadian, is the superior quality of the product. While clothing made overseas may look good on the rack, there’s no telling how long it will last. “We find our customers are coming back years later wearing the same great stuff,” says Wenzel. Check out FLOW in-store or preview and shop online at www.flow-active.com.

$10K prize up for grabs on Jan. 31 episode LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As his summer wedding date on Toronto Island fast approached, chef Matthew Sullivan thought a little extra cash would go a long way. At the prompting of a friend, the Roncesvalles Village resident decided to apply for Chopped Canada, the reality cooking show that pits four chefs against each other and airs on the Food Network Canada and the Food Network in the U.S. Its $10,000 prize was hugely enticing. Sullivan undertook the extensive application process, which included culinary and personal questions like, ‘What type of competitor are you?’ and ‘How’d you get into cooking?’ followed by a oneon-one interview. Asked what he thought gave him an edge over other applicants, Sullivan joked, “Aside from being awesome and charismatic?” “I’m a pretty competitive person. I think that came across,” he told The Villager.

Roncesvalles-area chef Matthew Sullivan stars on Chopped Canada on Jan. 31.
Sullivan, the executive chef at Real Sports Bar and Grill downtown, is appearing on the show this Saturday, Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. Not allowed to divulge many details, he would only say he’s up against a strong group of competitors in this episode. Sullivan was introduced to cooking by his father, who was a firefighter and cooked a lot for his colleagues and was very talented in the kitchen. Sullivan’s first job was washing dishes in a restaurant as a teenager. Cooking, “is like an adrenaline rush,” he said.
Lots of chefs call cooking an art; Sullivan refers to the profession as a craft or trade, although he does love to be creative, he said. Sullivan and his wife married in July, 10 days after shooting Chopped Canada. “It was a really cool experience,” he said of appearing on the show. Sullivan and his wife plan to stay in Roncesvalles Village where they’ve been living for the past two years.

Bloor West Village-based thespian Patric Masurkevitch’s latest work is a departure of sorts for the veteran actor. Masurkevitch stars in Melancholy Play by Sarah Ruhl, presented by The Empty Room. The show debuts tonight at The Collective Space, 221 Sterling Rd., in the Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue-area. Over the past three years, Masurkevitch has performed predominantly in comedies, farces and musicals. “This is different than the material I’ve been doing recently. It’s great to work a different set of muscles. It’s like painting in a different medium. You’re still painting a picture, but the technique involved is quite radically different.” Most importantly, he said, the play that delves into the issue of mental illness, will likely stimulate conversation among audiences about the
Patric Masurkevitch
issue. Melancholy Play centers around Tilly, a woman whose deep sadness draws everyone around her. Yet, as her group of fans gets bigger, her sadness recedes and her happiness grows. Her admirers are less than impressed with this change of events. Masurkevitch plays Lorenzo, Tilly’s psychiatrist. “I fall in love with her and as we all know, this is a huge taboo,” he said. “My character is going into the world of melancholy as Tilly is going into happiness.” The play, he said, “has a
very unique twist.” Masurkevitch called the cast and crew “quite phenomenal.” “We’re a very eclectic mix,” he said. Masurkevitch has been acting for 35 years. The father of two teenage girls, 18 and 16, decided to give it a try after graduating high school a year early and hasn’t looked back. Masurkevitch’s resume includes years at the Shaw and Charlottetown festivals; he performed in The Producers for Stage West Calgary, The Tempest for the Festival of Classics, Money and Friends for the Grand Theatre/Vancouver Playhouse, Puff and Blow Boys for the Blythe Festival and Little Orphan Annie for Drayton Entertainment. He and his family have lived in the Bloor West area for the past 17 years. The show runs until Feb. 8. For tickets and other information, visit www.emptyroom.com

Developer says slogan will stay >>>from page 1 told The Villager in an interview last week. “It’s on their signage and in big letters in the middle of their website.” As he knocked on doors collecting signatures to petition the developer to take down the sign and remove the slogan online, Masih said while some people said the words were “cheeky,” they agreed they were not in good taste. The petition boasts almost 50 signatures. “Some people said it shouldn’t be there in a Catholic neighbourhood near Catholic schools,” he said. Yet, Alex Speigel, a spokesperson for Union Lofts, said he’s surprised at the backlash now – two years after the sign was erected. “The advertising campaign has been very well received by most people as a whimsical reference to the historical use of the building,” Speigel said. “As matter of fact, another line we used was ‘Prepare to be Converted.’” Speigel said he had heard of a neighbour’s complaint, however, no one has been in touch with him directly. “In any event we have no plans to change it,” he said. Masih said he has reached out to Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão for advice. The councillor says a business’ marketing materials are not controlled by the city. “The city has no control over any names or pictures they put up or in brochures,”

Junction Triangle resident Daniel Masih and some of his neighbours take offense to a local developer’s slogan, ‘Praise the Loft’.
Bailão said. “We advise them to study the community so they know how to promote (their product).” Bailão advises Masih bring his and neighbours’ concern to the developer. “I can help them with that, but we don’t really have a mechanism at the city to control this – and then we get
into the issue of freedom of speech,” she said. Perth Avenue Methodist Church has been a fixture at the corner of Perth and Wallace avenues since the early 1900s. What do you think - is the slogan offensive? Write a letter to contactus@insidetoronto.com

An Easy Solution for Finding a Family Doctor Health Care Connect provides a simple solution for connecting with a family physician For many, the search for a family doctor is one that can be a cause of stress and frustration. Looking for that right connection with a Primary Care physician is often a daunting and timeconsuming task. There are many things to consider: the location of the doctor, their area of specialty and most importantly – whether they are taking on new patients. In dense urban areas, the quest can be often even more challenging due to the high volume of those requiring care relative to the physicians who are taking on more patients. Oftentimes, those in need of a family doctor look to friends, relatives and colleagues for referrals and suggestions, only to find out that a wellliked or recommended physician is not taking on new patients. The result is not only frustration for the person in need of medical care, but a time-consuming exercise in
sourcing a doctor who is able to commit to new patients (sometimes including a whole family). Those who require a family doctor often visit hospital emergency rooms (ER) with various ailments, as they feel that they have no other options for addressing their medical concerns. As a result, the patient is often left with having to deal with long waits for illnesses that are not necessarily considered emergencies; as well, the ER becomes busier than it needs to be, resulting in longer waits for all. In addition, higher than necessary health care costs are a result, as well as crowded emergency waiting rooms. In some cases, early intervention by a doctor would make the difference in preventing serious health issues that would require emergency care or hospitalization. The good news is that there is an easy and free solution for those who are looking for a family physician. Health Care Connect, an initiative of the Government of Ontario, is a service that allows any Ontarian who does not currently have a family doctor, to register. A Care Connector will contact the registrant
and will work with them to help find them a physician. Some considerations that are taken into account by Care Connectors are wheelchair accessibility, the ability of the doctor or team members to make house calls or languages spoken. Those who have more complex health requirements are prioritized and are able to receive ongoing monitoring and care in order to maintain their health and keep them out of the hospital. When a “match”is found, the individual meets with the doctor and then makes the decision about accepting continuing care. All registrants have the option to accept the match or re-register and begin the process anew. The criterion for eligibility includes the following: • Registrants must have no existing enrollment with a family doctor • A valid OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) card • An up-to-date mailing address For more information about Health Care Connect, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca
The TTC is unknowingly linking to a web page appearing to originate from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), but in fact belonging to private company. At first glance the site www. transitpass.ca appears to be a federal government page, albeit with an older design template, providing helpful information on claiming a tax credit for regular use of a transit pass – and even displaying the official logo of the Canadian Urban Transit Association, which supposedly helped co-develop the “promotional” site. Also included within the page are text and links referring to a company with no apparent government association and promoting a “payday loan” service. The links direct to what appears to be a commercial site. A quick search via www. whois.net shows a private company holds ownership of the transitpass.ca domain until 2019. TTC spokesperson Brad

DEFENDS TTC’S USER SET TO PAY METROPASS FARE HIKE MORE TO TRAVEL wCFO wGO The TTC’s chief financial officer is defending a proposal to raise Metropass fares, which if approved will see the monthly cost for the unlimited travel pass rise by nearly six per cent this year. Vince Rodo said increasing the Metropass, which will likely become $141.50 beginning March, is part of a “proportionate” fare hike recently announced, and says TTC trip data shows card users are taking more transit trips. “Over the last several years, each year on average Metropass users are taking
GO Transit users can also expect a fare increase. Approved by Metrolinx’s board of directors late last year, the increase is being justified by the transit planning agency as needed for upgrades to GO service, including the addition of extra trains on the Milton line. The move means an average price hike of five per cent for the estimated 80 per cent of GO users who own a Presto fare card. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. BLACK history
MONTH
survey seeks complete picture of people’s lives in our black communities MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com
T
oronto’s black community is not unified, not one. It’s many. Organizers of the Black Experience Project know this: 400,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) say they’re black, but each of their lives is different. Finding out how different is a monumental job, but next month – Black History Month – the project’s interviewers will start asking around 1,800 residents what it’s like to be black in the GTA. They’ll be asked about the strength of their identities – black, ethnic, and otherwise – their goals, religious beliefs, and where they feel they belong. Nothing like it has been done with Toronto’s black community, or communities, before. “It’s going to answer some questions we’ve all asked,” as well as shed some light on misconceptions, North York filmmaker Ryan Singh said last week. “More people will say, ‘The black community is a viable community, and we want to know more about it.’” Its supporters, including members of more than two dozen non-profit groups, say the project, when completed and released later this year, won’t simply sit on a shelf. “We’re going to get a really complete picture of people’s lives,” added Keith Neuman, executive director of the nonprofit Environics Institute, one of the project’s partners. The study is an important
exercise, said Karen Carter, executive director of Heritage Toronto and one of hundreds of “trailblazers” who volunteered time to shape it during 2012 and 2013. Black people in Toronto have layers of identity – whether they’re from families whose ancestors arrived on the Underground Railroad, or who came from the Caribbean in the Trudeau era, or from Africa more recently – complicated by the spaces in Greater Toronto they live in, Carter said. After its findings are known, Carter hopes the community, or communities, can “look within ourselves at these complications, as we grapple with them.” As chairperson of Black Artists’ Network in Dialogue, which uses culture “as a way to educate the average Canadian and average fellow citizen about who we are,” she said she avoids featuring just works from artists of Caribbean background, though artistic excellence must be shown by all. Carter also hopes the project demonstrates the usually overlooked economic power of Toronto’s black people, and that the results make their leaders more confident, able to go “walking in the door (of institutions) and saying, ‘Hey, I’m here,’ even if you weren’t invited.” Michael Hall, a vice president of YMCA of Greater Toronto, said his organization, a project partner whose black staff examined the proposal and got involved in designing the research, is committed to use the project afterwards to serve the community better. The YMCA supports any

Keynote speaker and former Scarborough East MPP Mary Anne Chambers addresses the Ontario Black History Society’s Black History Month kick-off brunch this past Sunday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
share your view What are your thoughts on the successes and challenges of the black community? Email us at etg@insidetoronto.com chance to “understand who (the black) community is,” including its needs and aspirations, Hall said. Though a report on the project’s “trailblazing” first phase concludes “there is no single ‘black experience,’ but rather ‘black experiences,’” and “the diversity with the community needs to be emphasized,” it also finds Toronto’s black people, as a whole, face challenges “not similarly experienced by most other immigrant or ethnic communities in the GTA.” Singh said he sees the project as a way to unite the black community’s factions and fragments. “There’s power in unity,” said Singh, adding his work within the community has reflected a “love-hate relationship” for years. “I love because I love my people, but I challenge because I find we’re so fragmented,” said Singh, who directed a call-to-action video (http:// youtu.be/JKezwsr7N10) for the project.
The research won’t answer every question, but it will start conversations to help heal the community, and will change the way advertisers and governments look at black people, he predicted. “It’s the beginning of understanding a people.” Singh joins a five-person panel discussing black experiences, moderated by author and broadcaster Dalton Higgins, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 in the Maria A, Shchuka Toronto Public Library branch at 1745 Eglinton Ave. W. Each person speaking at the free event is a black storyteller or educator. The city’s other scheduled Black History Month events are, unsurprisingly, quite diverse, presenting everything from personal histories and spoken word poetry to culinary delights. For the Ontario Black History Society kick-off brunch this past Sunday, Mary Anne Chambers, a former Scarborough MPP, said she planned to speak about “selfempowerment,” her call to people in black communities “to see themselves as part of the solution.” “We are capable of, and we have made, these huge contributions to the world, and we need to continue to take our responsibility to define who we
are and write our own history,” she declared last week. Chambers said she’d reflect on achievements of black inventors, “people whose names we don’t hear as much as maybe we should,” but whose brilliance improved lives around the world. “Notwithstanding challenges too many people still experience as a result of poverty or not-too-subtle racism, we’ve come a long way,” Chambers added. Drop-out rates for black high school students are unacceptably high, relations with police are strained, and the community is over-represented in Ontario’s child welfare system, said Chambers, a former provincial minister for children and youth. Expressing sympathy for young people in these situations – “They need the village to support them today” – she also said she’d encourage youth to seek careers in law enforcement or justice system, to make changes from inside. When black youth and police meet under positive circumstances, stereotypes diminish and respect increases, Chambers said. “I hear this from the kids and I hear this from the police.”
