Police launch Paws on Patrol to reduce crime

GETTING COZY FOR FROZEN

Dog walkers, joggers asked to be eyes and ears of the community LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Eleven Division police introduced area residents to a newly launched initiative that asks dog walkers to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour while out with their animals. Paws on Patrol was created, in part, because of the sexual assaults that took place in High Park in early May, Const. Josh McSweeney, 11 Division crime prevention

officer, told The Villager during a recent safety seminar to introduce the program to residents. “We’re encouraging dog walkers to call police because they know the area,” McSweeney said at the Grenadier Cafe in High Park last Thursday. Dog walkers, and others, such as joggers, are in a unique position because they are out and about in the neighbourhood while the majority of others are at work. >>>POLICE, page 7

Villager photographer retires after four decades behind lens GEORGIA BALOGIANNIS gbalogiannis@insidetoronto.com After 40 years of shooting pictures in Toronto’s west end, Bloor West Villager photographer Ian Kelso is retiring. “When news broke of Ian’s retirement, we were flooded with well wishes from the community,” said Grace Peacock, managing

editor of The Bloor West Villager. “He was such an integral part of this newsroom, but even more so, an integral part of the city’s west end. It will be a strange thing not to have him representing our newspapers at events and assignments.” And some of that praise came from Kelso’s photo subjects, who >>>SAYING, page 6

Author-illustrator Kate Beaton releases first children’s picture-book Childhood in Nova Scotia integral to developing her artistic style LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Roncesvalles Village based author-illustrator Kate Beaton’s first-ever picture book for children, The Princess and the Pony was released this Tuesday. Its debut has been a long time coming, Beaton told The Villager, although in the picture book publishing industry, this is not unusual. “I finished it last July after working on it for some time,” Beaton said. “We made a deal with Scholastic the year before that. The standard wait time in the picture book world between handing in the book and when it is published is so long, it feels like a big buildup.” princess pinecone The book tells the story of Princess Pinecone, who wants to be a great warrior. To be a great warrior, she needs a great horse. And so, she asks for one for her birthday. Instead, she gets a round little pony – hardly a brave steed. Regardless, Pinecone remains determined. As for the pony – there could be a

champion inside waiting to be unleashed. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Beaton says growing up in a small, “isolated place” played the biggest role in developing her artistic style and the characters she has created. She would relish in drawing alone, losing track of time. “We didn’t have that much coming in from the bigger pop culture world, so I’d seek out whatever art odds and ends I could find,” Beaton said. “But it wasn’t a conscious decision to develop anything, just to keep doing what I was doing and get better at it.” Beaton’s talent could be in the genes. Her mother can draw. “Mom was just showing me her old drawings the other day. The only differ-

ence for me is that I never stopped drawing, so I never lost it,” she said. While she wasn’t exposed to a variety of art growing up, Beaton says she checked out the comics in the newspaper every day. It wasn’t until university when she was introduced to alternative comics, which opened up a whole new world. “It was then that I saw what comics could really be,” she said. Beaton studied history and anthropology, but was also the comics and humour editor at the student newspaper. “There were definitely times I put way more work into the newspaper than into my studies, which was a sign maybe,” Beaton recalled. “A professor looked over my transcript from first to fourth year and asked where did all the As go, but I enjoyed both. I still use both.” Beaton’s comics reflect a curiosity and interest in history and pop culture. Although, she can’t put a finger on where her inspiration comes from. “I wish I knew,” she said. “I’d go back there instead of banging my head on the desk. It’s always a new blank page, and you have to fill it. There is no other way around it, so you do whatever you can.” Beaton will be at Little Island Comics, 742 Bathurst St., Saturday, July 4, from noon to 2 p.m.

Metrolinx report puts pressure on Mayor John Tory and Toronto council

T

here are a couple of ways to look at the new report from Metrolinx that draws attention to the need for a downtown relief subway line, for which no funding exists. One way is to see it as a stick with which to hit the Toronto-council-supported Scarborough subway extension and Mayor John Tory’s proposed SmartTrack system: one a project that is unnecessary, the second a project that will only provide short-term relief; and both, unlike the relief line, close to fully funded. The Metrolinx report, Yonge Relief Network Study, was released in June, but Mayor Tory and council have had access to countless other opinions and studies indicating the Yonge subway line is running over capacity and a

david nickle the city relief line looping down from the Bloor-Danforth line and possibly points north is the cure. The study lays it out in starker terms. Toronto and Metrolinx have made some headway in mitigating the crowding on the Yonge line. The automatic train control and new, roomier trains help, as does the GO Regional Express plan that will form the backbone of Tory’s SmartTrack proposal. That will meet needs over the next 15 years. Past that, we’re all back in the same swamping boat. Given all that, one might call Toronto’s political leadership for being short-sighted and pandering – funding inadequate short term transit plans

at the expense of a longterm solution. That is a legitimate call. But the only call that follows from that is a “throw the bums out” movement, and there are three years before anyone can even think about that. In the meantime, the call from Metrolinx points to another difficult choice. If the city really wants to pay for a short subway line in Scarborough and a multi-station build along the Regional Express line that runs very close to that subway, it must either resign itself to the hub of its entire transit system failing or else come up with a lot more money. It’s not inconceivable that council could do so. In the last term, council voted to raise property taxes to pay for a subway that would serve only a small portion of the city. There is a greater pretext for doing

so in the matter of the Downtown Relief Line — in that all of the city loses out when the hub of the system crowds to the point of dysfunction. But on the subject of dysfunction, the politics won’t make it easy. The suburban-downtown rift that’s defined this city since amalgamation in the late 1990s is showing no sign of healing, and as council is constituted, suburban votes hold sway. But sooner rather than later, someone is going to have to make that choice. And once that’s done, we’re all going to have to start paying, and it will be considerably more than we would have with more rational and evidencebased leadership. Saying goodbye to Ian >>>from page 1 experienced Kelso’s love of props to get the right shot. “My best memory of Ian Kelso...was when he asked me to climb up a ladder to clean off one of the new signs on Browns Line,” said former Etobicoke councillor Irene Jones . “I don’t know where the ladder came from but I know I climbed up pretty high to help him take the photo for the paper. I don’t know where he got his ideas from, but those were the good fun days.” His career started at the Liverpool Echo when he was 20 years old, following in the footsteps of his father, a photographer for the newspaper. The idea to come to Canada was borne in 1967 after a night of pints with some of his newsroom colleagues. Kelso and reporter Morris Simms decided then and there they would try their luck overseas. He got the idea from photographing Brits boarding ships heading to Canada for a new life. The two lined up job interviews before they left – and within six months Kelso was hired by the Don Mills and

At that time Ian had married his Canadian bride Paula and had a two-year-old daughter, Sarah. Daughter Heather would follow two years later. Police warn Paws on Patrol not a vigilante program >>>from page 1 “They are a great assistance to the police because they’re the eyes and ears for us,” McSweeney’s partner, community relations officer. Det. Const. Steven Moniz said. Break and enters are the most common type of crime in Canada, he said. Thieves are after audio equipment, jewelry and money. “It’s one of those crimes that people feel most violated about,” said Moniz, adding that 80 per cent of victims contact police. The most common points of entry are windows (29 per cent), front doors (26 per cent) and garage doors (17 per cent). “The concept for Paws on Patrol is simple: Why not help out while you’re out every day with your pets,” Moniz said. “We’re not asking you to do anything that you don’t already do.”

What a criminal wants is no one around – people who are at work or at school, an empty neighbourhood. Thieves have been known to tell police, ‘I don’t pick the house, it picked me,’ Moniz told the small, but attentive audience. Thieves tend to target houses during the day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The officers cited the April actions of a Toronto dog walker, who rescued a woman who had been kidnapped in Leslieville, while out with his yellow lab. Paws on Patrol is a safety program, a crime deterrent program – not a vigilante program. “We don’t want anyone getting dolled up in a superhero costume,” Moniz said. “It’s not a chase-a-criminal-with-mydog program. We’re not asking anyone to intervene.” Instead, the goal of the program is to increase the

health and well-being of neighbourhoods. Learning what’s attractive to criminals and how to recognize suspicious behaviour helps create a safer neighbourhood, McSweeney said. It’s key homeowners know their neighbours, not just next door, but across the street and behind them. Watch for any strangers hanging out in one area, in close proximity to a house or vehicle; cars driving around aimlessly or parked cars with people sitting inside. “Community members need to collaborate with police in an effort to keep their streets and homes safe,” McSweeney said. Why choose a Realtor? A Realtor has the experience and knowledge to help you find the home of your dreams Entering the real estate market is both a daunting and exciting experience. You spend your time envisioning the perfect scenario, but a home is the most expensive purchase you can make, and finding the right one to meet your needs should be left in the hands of a professional. Like any professional, a Realtor needs to go to school before they can secure their real estate license. Realtors spend years learning about the importance of economics, demographics and geography on real estate values, how land and property are registered, municipal planning and land use regulations, the construction of homes and buildings, how to determine the value of a property, current trends and issues that impact residential and commercial real estate. This information isn’t available to everyone and can help sell a home quickly. Even after they’ve obtained their real estate license, many Realtors continue to update their skills to be on top of an ever-changing real estate market. It’s not all about statistics and school courses. Realtors bring years of experience to the table to help guide new clients. They know the ins and

outs of the desired neighbourhoods, from the demographics of the area to the closest schools. This kind of knowledge only comes with being tapped into the real estate industry. Once they’ve helped you find a home that meets all of your wants and needs, Realtors use their knowledge of the neighbourhood to help get you the best deal. You may know that a comparable home in the neighbourhood was on the market for $600,000, but a Realtor would know how long it was on the market, any upgrades the owners made and the actual selling price, which can help when making an offer. Whether you are putting your home up for sale or looking to purchase, a Realtor has a network of professionals to help you meet your goals. Over time, Realtors develop a roster of contractors, decorators, plumbers and electricians with whom they’ve had a positive experience. You don’t need to know everything about buying, selling or even renovating when you enter the real estate market, as long as you hire a professional who does.

Thinking of Buying or Selling? An agent that advertises in your local Real Estate section is always a wise choice. For advertising information call

At SickKids, we believe that every child deserves every chance to live. That’s why we're passionate about the Herbie Fund, which brings children from around the world to SickKids - one of the world’s largest and most respected paediatric health-science centres - for life-saving or life-changing surgeries they can’t get in their own countries or regions. Since the inception of the fund in 1979, over 765 children from 105 countries have received specialized surgical treatment. The Herbie Fund is supported entirely by community donations. Together, on Herbie Day, June 19, we raised $170,000. So thank you for your generosity! Your gift supports the world’s most vulnerable children, and helps ensure that no child’s health is compromised because of where they live. To find out more about the Herbie Fund, and make a donation, visit sickkidsfoundation.com/herbie.

Cheering for the team behind the team Chevrolet gives thanks to the volunteers at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games By: Stephen K. Carlisle, President and Managing Director, General Motors Canada

This year, more than 250,000 people will arrive in our city to join us for The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, events which will inspire and engage generations of Canadians.

The athletes will be the stars of the Games. Their stories, their hard work and their victories are what move us to celebrate their achievements, to take pride in our hometown competitors and to recognize those from around the world.

Simon Whit eld - four-time Olymp mpic ic triat triathle hlete,, Olympic gold and silver medallist and Pan Am Gamess bro bronze nze meda medallis llist.

The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay Is Underway. Visit insidetoronto.com/panam to follow the Pan Am flame here in Toronto.

It’s also with pride that we welcome our neighbours to Toronto and its surrounding areas, because it’s our city, it’s our province and it’s our country. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community, and we’re ready.

Supporting Our Volunteers At Chevrolet, we recognize that the 23,000 volunteers at this year’s Games are the engine that makes it all possible. We’re ready because of those volunteers. We believe in the power of possibilities and there’s an incredible potential in each of them. The hard work of our volunteers should be recognized. They are like the pit crew in a grueling race and they deserve our thanks for the early mornings, late nights and their unfaltering dedication. Four years ago, Chevrolet committed to being the official sponsor of the volunteers for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. A commitment made out of respect for the volunteers own unfaltering commitment.

It was also a natural extension of Chevrolet’s long history of supporting Canadian sports. As the organizers have worked to shape the Games, we’ve worked alongside them to provide the support needed for our volunteers to make these Games the greatest they’ve ever been. This has meant providing Chevrolet vehicles to help the volunteers behind the scenes to prepare the field of play, to shuttle athletes to and from their matches, to enhance the spectator experience, and to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. No matter how you enjoy the Games you’re likely to see these hardworking volunteers— but you should also think of the ones you don’t see, those integral to bringing the Games to life before a single race was run, before a single ball was thrown, and before any athletes proudly walked the Opening Ceremony to the applause of people from around the world. Take a moment to join us in thanking them.

Mobile app lets riders buy TTC pass Residents will soon be able to purchase a TTC day pass with their smartphones. Starting next week, The TTC will make available a mobile application, TTCconnect, for download which will make it possible for riders to purchase group or single day passes on their phones using a credit card. Unlike paper passes which go into effect at the time they’re bought, you can prepurchase your ticket and activate it via the app up to a year after the pass was bought. And you can purchase and activate up to 20 passes. The app will be available for iOS and Android users to start, but the TTC says Blackberry and Windows phone users could be added to the list in the future.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT verdict from drivers was less than flattering. On Monday, June 29, the first day of enforcement, jamups were reported on major roadways such as Hwy. 401 and Don Valley Parkway. The OPP was kept busy handing out $110 tickets to singleoccupant vehicles improperly using the lanes. You need to have a special Games pass or have at least three people in your vehicle, reduced to two persons at the end of July, to legally use the lanes. releases UP rider numbers wmetrolinx

One month in and ridership of the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link appears to be within Metrolinx’s forecasts. The provincial transit planning agency unveiled the four-stop train connection between Union Station and

Toronto Pearson airport in early June. Despite reports of empty trains on its first day of service Saturday, June 6, UP President Kathy Haley told Metrolinx’s board of directors last week the line is averaging 2,250 riders per day. This projects favourably to the stated goal of having 5,000 daily riders on average by the end of the link’s first year of operation. repairs 141K potholes this year wCity

The City of Toronto released its latest statistics for pothole repairs last week and it would appear the numbers remain high. According to available figures posted by the city’s winter operations division, the city averages 237,000 pothole fills a year. So far this year it’s at 141,693, a number which includes 4,519 filled potholes during the week of June 15-19. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday.
