hile solving the problem of food insecurity will require a concerted effort from all levels of government, there is a great deal being done at a more grassroots level to help make sure Torontonians can put food on their plates. Organizations such as
Reel in savings.
Community Food Centres Canada (CFC), FoodShare, Building Roots and the Toronto Youth Food Policy Council (TYFPC) are engaging vulnerable Torontonians through a variety of programs and initiatives, providing not only food but opportunity. CFC Chief Operating Officer Kathryn Scharf (www. cfccanada.ca) said awareness of food security issues is growing, as is action to
combat them. Her organization originated out of The Stop Community Food Centre on Davenport Road, and now there are three such organizations in Toronto and eight across Canada. “With almost one in 10 households experiencing food insecurity, we don’t have a hard time finding communities that could use a Community Food Centre,” >>>BETTER, page 10

In the wake of the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Junction-based contemporary painter-sculptor Viktor Mitic felt compelled to lend his support to the victims and LGBT community. He is doing so by donating all proceeds from the sale of his latest work, ‘Spectral Confederation’, that depicts the Confederate flag with its stars in LGBT colours. “The Orlando shooting is a terrible event in LGBT history and I wanted to show support
for the victims and contribute whatever help I could as relief, but there’s more to it than just that,” Mitic told The Villager. “Spectral Confederation is a piece where three contradictory elements come to life as one contemporary statement. It’s based on a Confederate flag, a symbol of oppression, and by merging the flag and LGBT struggle and by shooting it up with real guns, it sort of deweaponizes the flag at the same time as outlining the several deep issues surrounding the North American way of life.” The piece has been appraised >>>miTic, page 23
