Friends complete challenging three-day canoe race in the Yukon LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It was a tough three days on the water, confessed Junction resident Liam Ross. Yet, he was exhilarated to say that he and best friend David Tucker, a Bloor West Village resident, completed the Yukon River Quest, a 715-kilometre canoe race on the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City where as many as 13 teams didn’t finish. “The fatigue, the sleep deprivation; that was the hardest,” said Ross, who met Tucker at McMaster University and now live only a neighbourhood apart. “I injured my shoulder halfway through. I just had to grin and bear it. It was a tough river to paddle; it’s big, the navigation is tricky.” The annual competition took place during Summer Solstice and so Ross and Tucker paddled in constant daylight. “You really lost track of time,” Ross told The

Villager. Although they saw a variety of wildlife, including an eagle, moose and deer and were paddling amid beautiful wilderness, Ross admitted there came a point when he and Tucker didn’t even notice their surroundings. “After a while, you don’t even look at it,” he said. “When we were up there, they were going through a heat wave.” Overall, the two felt like they were prepared, however, there were some surprises. “Dave and I were doing fairly well up to the halfway point, but then we faced a number of challenges, including two major storms, smoke on the river from nearby forest fires – started from the lightning of the storms, a shoulder injury that made paddling difficult and sleep deprivation,” he said. “The river also became quite complicated in the second half with numerous channels and cross currents that made it difficult to navigate.” They persevered and made

it to Dawson City within the time limit. Ross recalled thinking, “I never want to get into a canoe again.” “I can’t tell you what a great feeling that was. It was so great to see our support crew on dry land and we were also touched by the help and support we got at the end

from a couple of other teams that were forced to withdraw early, but nonetheless put their own disappointment aside and were there to cheer us on at the finish and help unload our canoe and celebrate with us,” Ross said. The two fr iends had trained intensely for a six-

month period before the race that took place June 26 to 30. According to its liability waiver, they faced possible hypothermia, drowning, a bear mulling – even death. Even though both men grew up in Toronto, they have extensive canoeing experience. Tucker was just three

when his father took him on his first adventure to Algonquian Park. The canoe race was the first time the two friends took on a challenge of that scope together. Ross loves to cycle and Tucker is an ultra-marathon runner. Both achieved a black belt in karate together. They were inspired to try the Yukon River Quest after reading a newspaper article about it two years ago. Once the ice melted, the two were out on the Humber River training. After completing the race, the two spent some time vacationing in Alaska, Killarney National Park and Whitehorse with their families, who have been a huge support. “Before going up there, I knew nothing about the area,” Ross said. “You hear the term ‘the spirit of the Yukon’ and having been through this I now appreciate what that means. It’s a remarkable part of the country.”

T

oday, July 16, marks the one-year anniversary of the worst mass shooting in Toronto’s history. The incident at a community barbecue on Danzig Street in Scarborough took the lives of 14-year-old Shyanne Charles and 23-year-old Joshua Yasay, and left 24 people injured. Among the wounded was a 22-month-old baby. Much has happened since the shooting that shocked Toronto, including the arrest of two men and a 17-year-old boy in connection with the shooting. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, then-Premier Dalton McGuinty and Mayor Rob Ford all came to the area shortly after the shooting to pledge support in fighting crime and promoting community safety. Ford called for “a war” on gangs in the city. And while there has not our view been an actual war, police presence in Danzig and other comResidents play munities has increased, as has the officers are having with critical role in interaction residents. community McGuinty pledged funding to tackle the root causes of some of the crime and gang issues in the city. Through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, 20 extra youth outreach workers were funded for Toronto and more than half are working in the city’s east side. Federally, Harper also promised help and just last week Scarborough Centre MP Roxanne James announced the extension of the GangBusters program, which helps keep young people away from gangs. That’s all good. It would have been a disgrace if the follow up to Danzig had been nothing, but empty political promises. This month’s five provincial byelection campaigns, including the Scarborough-Guildwood riding in which Danzig is located, are the time to hold candidates and parties accountable on crime and community safety. What will not change is the critical role residents must play in making their own neighbourhoods safer. Earlier this month Danzig had local children playing baseball, meeting at a townhouse set aside as community space, and taking care and control of their neighbourhood. Residents across the city should do the same. That needs to be the lasting legacy of what was a horrible day in Toronto’s history, a commitment that we will never let such a thing happen again.

column

Byelection could mean switch of Rob Ford’s right-hand man T

here’s nothing certain in love, war or politics – but it’s a fair bet when the dust settles in the EtobicokeLakeshore byelection, there’s a good chance Mayor Rob Ford will have a new deputy at his side. His current Deputy Mayor, Doug Holyday, is of course the Progressive Conservatives’ great hope to win a Toronto riding. He’s currently nipping at the heels of fellow councillor and Liberal candidate Peter Milczyn, but the polls are close enough to make it a possibility that on Aug. 2, Milczyn will be coming back to city hall and Holyday will be off. And if that happens, Mayor Ford will be looking to a new deputy, Scarborough Centre Councillor Norm

david nickle the city Kelly, to have his back for the rest of the term. I predict Kelly will do a good job. Throughout his career, he’s always been a dutiful team player, of the dance-with-the-one-thatbrung-you variety. But he won’t provide the unique qualities that Holyday provided for Ford. It’s fair to say that only Ford’s own late father, Doug Ford Sr., has been as much of a mentor in retail conservatism to our mayor as Holyday has. Both men have made careers of eschewing the perqs of a councillor’s office, and criticizing those who indulge. Ford’s insistence on hold-

ing down and voting against stop signs and traffic calming installed against staff’s recommendation was learned at Holyday’s foot. I remember when Ford came to city hall for the first time, right before he was first elected, I met him and his brother Doug Ford in Doug Holyday’s office. All of this has combined to make Holyday an excellent deputy mayor. He’s a trusted enough member of Ford’s inner circle to take the lead on some of Ford’s biggest files, and also to be able to get away with applying necessary public pressure when the mayor’s handling of his personal issues have threatened to derail the city’s government. Can Kelly do the same? The short answer is no. Through his long career as

a city councillor, Kelly has often seen nothing wrong with taking expensive trips on the public’s dime. And his dutiful loyalty to his mayor is undercut by the fact that Kelly was an equally loyal lieutenant to Mayor Ford’s predecessor, left-of-centre magistrate David Miller. Can Kelly do a good enough job, though? The short answer there is sure. After all, just as Deputy Mayor Holyday is campaigning hard for a new job now, Mayor Ford is already campaigning hard for his old job back. And that will make for lighter lifting in the deputy mayor’s job – whoever it is that ends up doing it.

that would be considered could include the nature of operation and whether it provides a service of need to the immediate neighbourhood. It can’t create adverse parking and traffic impacts or too much noise or light. Eating establishments and similar uses will not be permitted and any proposal would also have to respect the physical character of the study area, the size and configura-

tion of the lots, height and scale of the buildings. City staff will host a community consultation meeting to present the draft performance standards and refine them as necessary and there will be a report back to the Toronto and East York Community Council late in 2013 on the final form of the performance standards. GO rail work slated for next weekend Rail and signal work along the GO Transit Kitchener corridor is scheduled between Lansdowne Avenue and Queen Street West during the last weekend of July. GO Transit, which is coordinating a major expansion of the corridor to accommodate the upcoming Union Pearson Express air rail link, announced it will be testing new track signals and engaging in track construction starting the evening of Friday,

July 26 until 7 p.m. Sunday, July 28. During that time, GO Transit is advising residents to expect noise caused by construction. Lights will also be in use during the nighttime hours throughout the weekend, but according to GO they will be set up away from residences. As part of the work, which involves welding and cutting rail train tracks, trucks carrying materials will make use of

Sudbury and Shirley Streets as entry and exit points, respectively, into the corridor. GO also announced as of July 22, two to three trucks transporting construction materials will make hourly trips into the rail corridor via 65 Brock St. This is expected to last until the end of 2014. For more information about all planned construction contact GO’s Strachan community office at 416-581-1300.

Boxes part of pilot project >>>from page 1 $1,100 has been collected through the donation stations, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette said. “This is a pilot project. We’ve been working on the idea for quite some time,” Doucette told The Villager. Residents who make a donation will receive a receipt. For donations of more than $10, the receipt will direct donors to a website from which they can print a tax receipt, Doucette said. “The donation stations are just another way that Friends of High Park can receive funding,” the councillor said. The Friends of High Park

Zoo recently reached its goal of $50,000 within hours of its June 15 deadline. For the second time, the Honey Family Foundation offered to match donations to the zoo fund dollar for dollar for a maximum of $50,000. Meanwhile, the group is circulating a petition calling on Toronto City Council to restore its funding to the zoo. Because of financial constraints at the city, the zoo was slated for closure in June of last year. It costs $227,000 annually to operate the zoo, which has been around for 112 years. More than 250,000 people visit each year to see

its 50 inhabitants, including bison, llamas, peacocks, reindeer, highland cattle, sheep, yaks, emus, ducks, wallabies and capybara. For further information about the popular year-round destination, visit www.highparkzoo.ca In addition to the donation stations at the zoo, if you would like to contribute, visit the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation website at torontoparksandtrees.org/ high-park-zoo Why do you think the zoo should be saved? With the construction on Dufferin between Peel and Dundas, the plan was to keep one lane in each direction open, but that proved untenable. When the Dufferin Bridge was closed the decision was made to keep a northbound lane open on Dufferin and divert southbound traffic, including the TTC bus, so as not to funnel even more cars toward the closed bridge. The Dufferin bus is the single most used bus in the TTC according to Murray Hill, the TTC’s manager of construction and events.

At the meeting, residents said since the bridge was closed they have seen a dramatic increase in traffic, including large trucks, particularly on Springhurst Avenue. Residents say traffic is bumper to bumper and when it isn’t, cars are driving up onto the sidewalk to avoid speed bumps. Also, residents who live along Jameson Avenue said it has become akin to a highway. Police who attended

the meeting said they would look into increased enforcement and encouraged residents to report traffic infractions as well as the time of day they most commonly occur. The impact spreads beyond the immediate neighbourhood as surrounding areas see an increase in traffic on their streets as well. It makes a trip every three minutes during peak hours, but residents said the buses are speeding and the situation is dangerous. “They are going too fast and it is only a matter of time before a kid steps out onto the road from between cars and the bus won’t be able to stop,” one resident said. White said she would take a look at the intersection of Florence Street and Brock Avenue to see if there are means to improve the safety and Bailão said she would immediately look into the possibility of getting crossing guards in the area. Residents asked why the bus wasn’t being diverted onto Gladstone Avenue, which is closer to Dufferin and used to carry the Dufferin bus before the Dufferin Jog was straightened out in 2010. Hill said Gladstone was considered, however it was ruled out because in order to get the bus back onto Dufferin to complete its route after the detour, it would need to make a left hand turn across Queen Street. “Left hand turns are horrendous for buses,” Hill said. “With the frequency of the bus it would have really tied up the intersection.” However, later in the meeting Hill said he would take another look at running the bus on Gladstone. He also agreed to move the late night buses between midnight and 5 a.m. off Brock Avenue and onto Lansdowne Avenue.
