“At one point, it was just a dream of my wife’s; now, it’s a reality,” Shuck told The Villager a few days before the event on July 26. “It’s quite overwhelming.” Shuck is at the park regularly to oversee the path’s installation and this week, the finishing touches. Changes are happening daily, he said, and expressed his awe for the landscape architect and construction team’s skill set and compassion for the project. It was key to create a public memorial for Morrison in the park the couple and their young son frequented, because, Shuck said, “Jenna was always com>>>INSPIRATION, page 13

Environment, health officials monitoring gelatin factory smells in Junction Triangle Public meeting set for September to address issues from Nitta Gelatin Canada LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A longtime fixture in the Junction Triangle neighbourhood, Nitta Gelatin Canada is vowing to continue to work with its residential neighbours and the Ministry of Environment to alleviate the odour emanating from the factory. “We’ve been a staple in the community for quite some time bringing skilled jobs and income through local contractors and trucking companies,” Steve Boudreau, director of regulatory and quality affairs, told The Villager. “We want to stay there.” The company has already invested a significant amount of money to reduce the smell, Boudreau added. Located at 60 Paton Rd. in the Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue-area, Nitta Gelatin Canada specializes in the production of bovine, porcine and fish gelatins, as well as collagen peptides for a variety of uses, including food, nutritional, pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical and technical. The process of extracting collagen from pig skin is what causes the odour, explained Boudreau, acknowledging the company has received odour complaints over the years. third meeting held Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão, who hosted a public meeting recently alongside new local MPP Cristina Martins, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Toronto Public Health, and Nitta Gelatin to discuss a solution to the recent increase in odour emissions, said the issue has been ongoing for 10 years. The meeting was the third

held since the councillor was elected. “I wanted to assure that Toronto Public Health is on top of this. They say there is no health risk at this time,” Bailão said. By law, the company must get a certificate of approval to operate its factory. Anytime it makes a change in its efforts to reduce the smell, the Ministry of Environment must grant its approval. “The company has made odour control improvements, including redirecting exhausts into a scrubber, increasing the stack’s ability to disperse odour and maintenance of its stack to reduce odour,” said ministry spokesperson Kate Jordan. “The company also plans to make future equipment improvements. These include, relocating and extending exhaust stacks to better reduce the odours in the area of the facility. These actions are part of the company’s action plan to mitigate odours and the ministry continues to monitor the implementation of the action plan.” The ministry has required the company to amend its approvals and submit an odour reduction plan to include equipment changes designed to reduce odour emissions from the facility, Jordan said. “The ministry will be monitoring the company as it implements the action items in the plan,” she told The Villager in an email. “The ministry will continue to monitor odour issues and regularly visit the Nitta Gelatin facility in response to complaints from local residents.” A another public meeting is scheduled for midSeptember.

Relive Beatlemania at The Revue Cinema Fifty years ago on Aug. 11, 1964, the first Beatles film, A Hard Day’s Night, premiered in Toronto at four packed theatres. The Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave., marks the half-century of this anniversary with an evening devoted to Beatlemania, including a screening of the restored movie and a talk by Mark Lewisohn, considered the foremost Beatles historian in the world, Thursday, July 31 at 7 p.m. This will be his only public

appearance in Canada, although he has been visiting U.S. cities to promote his most recent book, Tune In: The Beatles: All These Years, the first in an exhaustive three-volume history of the Fab Four. The project will take Lewisohn, who lives in England, some 15 years to complete. The evening at The Revue will include screenings of rare footage of the Beatles’ first visit to Toronto in 1964, a 2013 short documentary by Toronto-based film-

maker Luis Garcia about the remarkable impact of a John Lennon statue in Havana, a presentation and Q&A with Lewisohn, and a screening of the remastered movie, A Hard Day’s Night, considered by many to be the best rock music movie ever produced. Also on hand will be Beatles in Canada expert Piers Hemmingsen, who will set the scene a half century ago when the lads from Liverpool landed in this city. Beatles fans can test their knowledge and win prizes

in a challenging trivia quiz, meet Lewison, enjoy a cash bar and have copies of Tune In signed by Lewisohn. And, if they have any Beatles questions, they can ask the expert. The band ‘Glendale One’ will cover Fab Four tunes live. Tickets are $10 online, www.revuecinema.ca; or $13 at the door. The event starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The cinema is operated as a not-for-profit cinema by the community-based Revue Film Society.

t happened on Monday and it will probably happen again. Rob Ford will attend an event and hecklers will protest against him, turning whatever the intended purpose of the event was into a sideshow of the debate over the competency and morality of Ford continuing as mayor. It’s a bad situation, which needs to be re-examined both by the Ford campaign and those opposed to him. On Monday, Ford attended the opening ceremonies for Woburn Park in the North Toronto area. The park means a lot to residents who live in the area, but you would never have known that by the circus surrounding Ford. Hecklers interrupted him, and the media fired questions at him his time in rehab, his use of our view about drugs and more while Ford posed photos on playground equipCommunity for ment. being ignored What wasn’t discussed was Woburn Park. with anti-Ford It was a similar scene at the recent launch of the Pan Am/ campaign Parapan Games countdown clock in Nathan Phillips Square. It’s one year until Toronto hosts the Games, but much of the event seemed to be dominated by a confrontation between an angry Ford supporter and those protesting against the mayor and the media in general. Both sides need to do better. Ford needs to respect the difference between a community event and a campaign event; and so do those who are following him around protesting. There is nothing more for the protesters to gain if they want to complain about Ford’s personal life. Whether they are wearing shirts or not, they need to stick to the issues of the campaign. Yelling at Ford about crack smoking gains them nothing. Right now, the protesters are probably helping Ford more than hurting him. What we want from this mayoral campaign is some solid, fact-based discussion on how to pay for transit improvements in Toronto, whether to abolish or stay with the Land Transfer Tax, and how to attract and keep businesses operating within the city’s borders. Those questions need to be asked and answered in an appropriate manner, rather than in the circus-like atmosphere in which the mayoral campaign is currently taking place.

Laws apply to everyone – both homosexuals and heterosexuals To the editor: People seem to be up in arms that Mayor Rob Ford didn’t stand when the other councillors were thanking those who organized the Pride Parade. Now I ask, if the yearly Greek parade were to have people on floats naked, simulating sex acts, gyrating, dressed indecently and performing other shameful acts, wouldn’t the police start making arrests? Last time I looked, performing lewd and lascivious acts in public were still against the law. As well, aren’t children in attendance at these parades? And when I tuned in to watch the parade on a local TV station, there was a warning the content could be offensive to some viewers as there was nudity. If, as I mentioned above, these events took place at the

yearly parade in Greek Town, and if the mayor did not rise to thank the organizers of such a parade, would he then be considered Greekaphobic? Is there one set of laws for heterosexuals and another for homosexuals? If this were truly a Pride parade, why wouldn’t those on

floats be dressed more akin to those in the Carabana parade, or at the very least, dressed? This could be a parade with a real purpose, perhaps to raise money for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and to show those who are homophobic that gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals are just like everyone else and thus deserve to be treated the same as everyone else, and that includes obeying the laws. This parade was nothing short of depravity and I give kudos to Ford for not jumping on the degeneracy bandwagon. Everyone screams about Ford associating with criminals, yet our councillors laud those who flout the law publicly and call it Pride. By being a part of this parade, are they not supporting the breaking of laws? I ask, that being the case, how can they, in good conscience point fingers at Ford?

As for Ford so-called cherry picking those in the media to whom he will give interviews, can you really blame him from excluding those who not only profess their animosity for him, but rather than reporting the news, prefer to create it? If those in the fifth estate, bloggers, journalists and media outlets that operate outside of the mainstream media, take issue with Ford, isn’t that what columnists are for, as long as their words are not libelous? As for how his constituents view Ford, I guess we’ll find out on Oct. 27, but until then, he is still the elected Mayor of Toronto, and if is expected to follow the letter of the law, then so must those who organize, attend and take part in all parades. If the law doesn’t apply to everyone, there can only be one result...chaos. Dee C. Burns

Robert Home Smith opened tea room in 1914 Denise Harris denise.harris@sympatico.ca

O

n Aug. 4, 1914, Britain declared war on Germany, automatically bringing Canada into the First World War where its contributions to the war changed history. That same day, a much smaller event, but also with long-term impact, took place in Etobicoke: Robert Home Smith opened the Old Mill Tea Garden. This tea room expanded over time to become today’s Old Mill Inn and Spa, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and where afternoon tea is still an honoured tradition. Home Smith was the developer of 3,000 acres of land he had amassed along the Humber River valley, creating beautiful subdivisions like Kingsway Park. He also provided amenities for buyers of his properties, and the Tea Garden was

one of the first he built. It was tucked away in a wooded valley next to the Humber River and the picturesque ruins of William Gamble’s 1849 grist mill. Its Tudor-style architecture helped bring to life the motto of Home Smith’s business: “Angliae Pars Anglia Procul” – a bit of England far from England. As its popularity grew, Home Smith began the first of many additions to the tea room. By 1921 they were offering dancing on a new dance floor to live music. By 1928, Home Smith’s firm had offices in a new wing, with a private cottage for him. Even through two world wars and a depression, the Old Mill remained a popular venue – one of the few that offered excellent food with dancing in an elegant setting. Expansions over the years included banquet rooms, a wedding chapel and a gift

shop. Michael Kalmar, owner and president since 1991, undertook a large expansion in 2001 to add a boutique hotel and spa constructed of stone from Gamble’s “Old Mill” ruin. Miraculously, the original tea room still exists within the Old Mill’s large complex and can be seen immediately southeast of the main entrance to the dining room on Old Mill Road. In honour of their centennial, the Old Mill has posted a gallery of old photos on its website at www.oldmilltoronto.com/ about/history/historicgallery/ I believe it’s possible that the Old Mill Dining Room is the oldest restaurant in Toronto: if you can think of an older one, please let me know.

Australian football player heading down under to compete Roncesvalles Village resident Gillian English hosting fundraiser to cover cost of trip LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

T

wenty-nine-year old Gillian English says she’s been given a “once-in-a-life-time” opportunity. The Roncesvalles Village resident and member of the High Park Demons Australian Football Club has been selected to play for the Midnight Suns Canadian Development Team in the Australian Rules Football International Cup in Melbourne, Australia next month. “I’m very excited, very honoured,” said English, who admits she’s still “processing” the news. “It’s insane to me. I’m going to do my best.” English could never have imagined this for herself – mostly because she had never played a team sport in high school or university.

She only just began playing Aussie Rules Football four years ago. “It’s probably the least likely thing to happen to me,” she admitted. “I started this at 25.” English had tried out for Team Canada, but wasn’t chosen, although her teammates Heather Walshe and Sarah Ennor qualified. “I’m B-Team material. I’ll take the opportunity,” she said with a chuckle. The actor-playwrightcomedian said she fell in love with the sport immediately, despite never really being athletic before. Nicknamed “The Enforcer,” English typically plays full back or half back flank on the back line. With the High Park Demons, English has won three Grand Final Championships in a row and in 2011, she was the recipient of the Coach’s Award for dedication. Four years ago as a temp,

she wanted to show her dedication to the job and began playing Aussie Rules because everyone else in the office played. While the job didn’t last, she kept up with the football. Since learning she was chosen for the Midnight Suns in June, English said she has upped her training, practicing two to three times a week in addition to her own circuit work and games. Like acting, she says she loves the teamwork of football. Plus, it’s such a physical sport. “It’s a great way to get exercise. I know that every Saturday, I’m going to be on the field,” said English, adding the game has expanded her circle of friends. The opportunity to represent Canada is a “tremendous” honour, yet also a “rather sizeable financial burden.” Because she only found

out she’d made the team at the end of June, English has only about a month to come up with at least $5,000. That’s why she organized a star studded fundraiser at Comedy Bar on her birthday, July 14. She’ll be hosting another fundraiser, performing her one-woman show ‘Drag Queen Stole My Dress’ at the Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor St. West, Thursday, July 31 at 9:30 p.m. English is the artistic producer and founder of The Theatre Elusive. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

Things to consider when downsizing The decision to downsize a home is often bittersweet. Many couples who downsize their homes do so after raising a family. A home might be filled with memories, but downsizing a home helps couples save more money, and that financial flexibility often allows men and women to more fully enjoy their retirement. But in spite of the financial impact of downsizing a home, there’s more than just money at stake for homeowners thinking of downsizing their homes. The following are a handful of factors homeowners should consider before downsizing to a smaller home.

Real estate market The real estate market can be a seller’s friend or foe. Many sellers have a sale price in mind when they decide to sell their home, but the real estate market can be fickle, so homeowners should do their research before putting their home up for sale. Will the current market make it easier for you to get the most for your home, or will you have to settle for less than you prefer? How fast are similar homes in your area selling? When studying the real estate market, it’s also a good idea to study the market for

smaller homes.

Furniture When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples realize their current furniture is unlikely to fit into a smaller home. That means couples will have to sell or donate their current furniture and then buy all new items for their new home. If it’s been a while since you purchased new furniture, you might be in for some sticker shock on your first visit to the furniture store. Another thing to consider regarding your furniture is which items you simply can’t live without. An antique dinner table might have been the centerpiece for your family holidays over the last several decades, but there’s no guarantee it will fit into your smaller home. You may want to pass this down to your son or daughter, but that’s only possible if he or she has the room for it. Before deciding to downsize, consider your attachment to certain items that you may or may not be able to take with you to your new home and the emotional toll that selling such items might take if you’re left with no other options.

Proximity to family When downsizing to a smaller

Medical care Many older men and women must also consider the effect that moving may have on their medical care. Downsizing to a home in the countr y may make it harder to maintain contact with your current physician, and rural areas typically have less medical practitioners than more densely populated towns and cities. In addition, if you have been visiting the same physician for years, you may not want to move and have to star t all over again with a physician who is unfamiliar with

your medical histor y. Consider how much maintaining your existing relationship with your physician means to you, and if your next home will provide the kind of access to medical care you’re likely to need.

home, many couples move out of the suburbs and into cities or towns with more ready access to culture and restaurants. While that accessibility is great, grandparents may find that it comes at the cost of less time with their grandchildren. That’s a steep price to pay for doting grandparents, and it may also impact your children if they frequently rely on grandma and grandpa for babysitting. Before downsizing, consider if you’re willing to move further away from your family. If not, you likely can still find a smaller home in close proximity to your current home and any nearby family members.

Inspiration for park came from couple’s trip to Korea >>>from page 1 passionate and seeking to contribute to the greater community she was part of.” Morrison, a 38-year-old expectant mother, yoga instructor and health practitioner, was riding her bike on her way to pick up her five-year-old son from school when she was struck and killed by a truck at the corner of Dundas Street West and

Sterling Road in November 2011. The reflexology path captures Morrison’s spirit, Shuck has said. “It relates to our life story.” On a visit to Seoul, Korea in 2001, Morrison, who lived in the Dundas Street West and Sorauren Avenue area, discovered the widespread popularity of reflexology footpaths

throughout Asia. Inspired by this notion, Morrison dreamed of creating such a footpath in one of Toronto’s public parks. Her dream is about to come true. Shuck said he hopes the path, in Morrison’s honour, will evoke people’s sense of “engagement, compassion and health.” Asked if the footpath has turned out the way he

had hoped, Shuck said, “Absolutely.” “It has exceeded my expectations as Jenna always did as well. It’s very special.” The footpath is situated at the south end of the park near Gladstone Avenue and Sylvan Street. With the support of Davenport residents and the City of Toronto, the footpath was built to honour Morrison while also providing

a permanent park amenity for all Torontonians to enjoy, according to local councillor Ana Bailao. “This is a great addition to the neighbourhood,” Bailao said. “It’s great to be able to join the family in this special moment.” Some of the features of the path include thousands of stones of various sizes and shapes to stimulate and

massage the feet as well as a seating area boasting a grove of gingko biloba trees providing a contemplative experience. The unveiling of the Jenna Morrison Reflexology Footpath takes place Saturday, at 2 p.m. Have an opinion on this story or anything else you see in the paper? TTC deal for tunnel borers nixed A deal between the TTC and a Chinese company to purchase four tunnel borer machines (TBM) is now off. The deal for the TBMs, which were used to excavate subway tunnels connecting Downsview Station and six planned stops as part of the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension, was shelved after Lovesuns Tunnelling Canada withdrew its $9.2 million offer, according to media reports. Previously the TBMs were offered to manufacturer Caterpillar to buy back, but the offer was also rejected. The TTC wants to sell the TBMs, despite being a little over five years old, because they require regular maintenance and will soon be obsolete. They were purchased for around $52 million.
