Plant theft costing the Dundas West BIA

®

TAKE A HIKE

ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com This year, the Dundas West Business Improvement Area (BIA) chose a bold design for its sidewalk planter boxes with a single canna lily, with its large, attractive foliage, as the centrepiece. But, to some, it turns out the flower is more attractive than something to look at.

MISSING CENTREPIECE Helder Ramos is the coordinator of the Dundas West BIA, which incorporates the stretch of Dundas Street West between L a n s d ow n e Av e n u e a n d Rusholme Road. He explained of their 47 large street planters, the centre canna lily has been stolen from about half, and in some cases more than once. In addition to the flower thefts, all of the street planters and their contents have been vandalized at least once. It is becoming a major, and costly concern for the BIA, Ramos said. “We have outright theft, where you can see that whoever (did it) took some care to also take some earth so the plants won’t die and they can be planted somewhere else,” Ramos said. “Then there is the >>>BIA, page 11

Bloor West author weaves Canadiana through pages of his latest offering LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Author Ken Leland’s latest book, the historical fiction novel 1812 The Land Between Flowing Waters is a love letter of sorts to Canada, his adopted home. The Bloor West and Jane streetsarea resident’s newly published piece is set on the Niagara and Detroit River frontiers during the War of 1812 and tells the tale of two families; the Benjamins and the Lockwoods. In Upper Canada, the Benjamins, having just escaped slavery, join their Caucasian neighbours and friends, the Lockwoods, to defend their new homeland from the impending American invasion. The native of Argos, Indiana stumbled upon the 19th century military conflict as a philosophy student at the University of Toronto in the 1970s. “It saved my sanity when I was a graduate student at U of T,” said the self-described history buff. “When I

wasn’t working on my dissertation, I’d research Canadian history.” As a child, Leland was a voracious reader. He attributes this in part to being an only child. He had to entertain himself and would tell stories and sagas. Leland’s parents would drop him off at the local library and leave him there for hours. One summer, he won a contest for having read the most number of books. His writing, he says, comes from reading. In university, said Leland, he began to write his thoughts down on paper. The novel he first began writing in university about Loyalists in 1812 is a far cry from the Fireship Press published 1812 The Land Between Flowing Waters. Although it sits in a drawer, the first book serves as background for Leland’s latest, published in May. As soon as Leland retired from teaching nine years ago, he set about researching and then writing it. “I’m dreadful,” Leland exclaimed when asked about his writing pro-

cess. “I wake up in the morning, usually with a scene in my head. If I don’t wake up with a scene, I don’t write; I don’t force it. I’m not doing this for money; I’m not doing this for fun.” He says he feels compelled to write, particularly about Canadian history, because Canada has been so good to him and his wife since they arrived in Toronto in 1970. “The longer I stay here, the more I fall in love,” Leland said. Leland, his wife and daughter moved to Bloor West Village 31 years ago. He recalls deciding to move to the area while sitting at his local dentist’s office and looking out the window at the neighbourhood. Leland is already working on a sequel to 1812. He’d love for readers – most of all – to enjoy the book, but also to gain “an appreciation for the folks who came before us and the wonderful legacy they’ve left us,” Leland said. BLOOR BASH

Resident’s ‘True North’ chosen in Starbucks contest LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Of the more than 60,000 submissions Starbucks received in its “Name your Blend” contest to re-christen the new coffee ‘Starbucks blonde roast’ in Canada, Bloor West area resident Robert Jack’s name was crowned the winner. Starbucks cafes across the country are now offering the newly-named Starbucks True North Blend/ Starbucks Mélange Nordique Blonde Roast coffee – as a brewed option in-store and in 1lb. whole bean packages. “It’s pretty amazing. I never thought my submission would be picked,” Jack revealed to The Villager recently. “You always think it’s going to be someone else, but when I was notified that my submission was one of the three selected to be voted on I couldn’t believe it. I was happy to be amongst the final three. Then when the votes came in for ‘True North’ I was amazed. I guess the name and the description struck a chord with Canadian Starbucks’ population.” As winner, Jack will be awarded a trip for two to meet a friend for coffee at a Starbucks store anywhere in Canada as well as a $500 Starbucks card and $400 spending money. Jack regularly drops into the Bloor West Village store

to enjoy a coffee – “and the occasional cookie” – on the patio to watch the goings-on of the neighbourhood. The Kingsway, High Park, Junction and the Stockyards locations are also on his list of regular stops. He first eyed the contest on an in-store display while in line.

Having the opportunity to name a product and have it out in the market I thought would be pretty amazing. – Robert Jack

“I thought the contest idea was interesting... It was based on more than pure luck, there was a creative aspect to it. Having the opportunity to name a product and have it out in the market I thought

would be pretty amazing,” he said. “ Canada being the ‘North’ in North America, ‘True North’ seemed like a natural fit. It also had that sense of Canadian spirit. It was familiar, but unique – and it was representative of the country.” Jack said he was inspired by his travels, particularly how he thought Canadians generally see themselves and how we are perceived by others. “There’s a humble confidence – a relaxed comfortable nature that Canadians have about themselves and it seemed to fit with the atmosphere that I see/feel when I go into a Starbucks. It also felt like it was the right thing given that it is part of our national anthem. A bit patriotic, some of that Canadian pride showing through.”

O

ur city is a bustling place where the day-today grind can take a toll. For those looking for a little back-to-nature respite, we’ve got the perfect adventure waiting for you, just steps away from your front door. In this edition’s special feature, we highlight local hiking trails and others across the city where people can go to spot wildlife, keep active, socialize and reenergize. Other stories we’ve collected online will take you butterfly watching along the Leslie Street Spit, jogging through the ravines of the Don River and exploring the ecosystems of the 250-acre Humber Arboretum in north Etobicoke. There’s a surprising number of hiking and walking trails in our city. There are so we couldn’t list them all our view many, within our feature. you walk some of them True nature it’sWhen easy to forget you’re in the lies within the middle of a busy urban centre – like when you’re following the city’s limits winding trails through the tall, dense forests of High Park. Others have landmark reminders, like the condo tower that looms over the meadowland of the Humber Arboretum. But all, some would suggest, have the power to refresh the spirit. The federal non-profit group Turtlefeather True Nature uses outings along these trails to help women who have experienced abuse gain confidence and reduce stress. It’s also a welcome outlet for groups like the Metro Toronto Fitness Club, who has been taking to the trails for years (nearly 50 in this case), seeking not only outdoor activity but new friendships. The group meets weekly for social walks and organizes social activities on a regular basis. Though one wouldn’t normally associate hiking and city life, these protected green spaces prove the two can complement one another and we hope our feature will prove to our readers that hiking is accessible here in our communities. So pack a lunch, grab the sunscreen (and bug spray) and head out on your own trail adventure. These green spaces provide a natural oasis that can’t be fully appreciated until you’re there. Take time for yourself, or bring the whole family and discover the great outdoors right in your backyard.

It’s time to put the hockey talk on ice

B

ack in the day, I didn’t have to rely on air conditioning to make it through hot spells. Talking hockey was enough to do the trick. Not anymore. Fact is, talking about today’s NHL makes me even hotter under the collar than I already am, especially when you’re conversing with one real tough cookie. Cookie: “I keep hearing the reason the Leafs can’t make any more roster acquisitions is because of the impact of free agency on players’ salaries. I know nothing about the business of sports. Can you explain that relationship to me?” Me: “No problemo. Let’s say Team ‘X’ is interested in signing Free Agent ‘X’ away from another club. What that means is...” Cookie: “Uh, I hate to stop you right away, but wouldn’t Free Agent ‘X’ already be on Team ‘X’, given that they’re the same letters and all? It seems logi-

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY cal to me.” Me: “Are you implying I’m not logical, Mr. Spock?” Free agent frenzy Cookie: “Not at all. I just don’t think you comprehend the subtlety of employing variables. Why don’t you just make it Team ‘X’ and Free Agent ‘Y’ or Team ‘Y’ and Free Agent ‘X’? It’ll avoid confusion. Trust me.” Me: “Noted. So Team ‘Y’ wants to sign Free Agent ‘X’ for ‘X’ dollars, Now...” Cookie: “Uh, uh, uh. You’re using ‘X’ in two different contexts again.” Me: “Team ‘Y’ wants to sign Free Agent ‘X’ for ‘Z’ dollars. You happy, now?” Cookie: “Ecstatic. Carry on.” Me: “What’s complicating this scenario is that Free

Agent ‘Y’ is also making ‘Z’ dollars and he’s not as good as Free Agent ‘X’, so...” Cookie: “Hang on. Do you mean Free Agent ‘Y’ from the previously mentioned Team ‘Y’ or do you mean a free agent on a different team?” Me: “Who cares? He could be on any team.” Cookie: “No, he couldn’t. We’ve already established that all the free agents on Team ‘X’ would be named Free Agent ‘X’. Ditto, all the free agents on Team ‘Y’ would be named Free Agent ‘Y’. So why don’t you just call him Free Agent ‘A’?” Me: “Why don’t I just call who Free Agent ‘A’?” Cookie: “The guy you just referred to as Free Agent ‘Y’” Me: “If you say so.” Cookie: “Excellent. So, just to recap, where you left off, Team ‘Y’ wants to sign Free Agent ‘X’ for ‘Z’ dollars. The problem is Free Agent ‘A’ is making ‘Z’ dollars and Free Agent ‘A’ is not as good as Free Agent ‘X’. Now,

please proceed.” Me: “Proceed? I don’t know what the heck you’re talking about. Look, I think we both need a break. Do you want to get some Chinese food? I could have sworn I saw a menu on the table in the kitchen.” Cookie: “You did and it’s taken care of, pal. I ordered before you came over to save time, in case we got into one of our typical, lengthy hot discussions. Here’s what I asked for, ‘X’ from Column ‘A’, ‘X’ from Column ‘B’, ‘X’ from...” Me: “Uh, do you mean ‘X’ from Column ‘A’ and ‘Y’ from Column ‘B’, etc.?” Cookie: “No. How on earth did you arrive at that conclusion?” Me: “Your lecture on proper variable usage. How else?” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Tuesday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

Council rebuffs taxpayers’ coalition proposal for more immediate reduction in numbers Showdown at Ontario Municipal Board a possibility DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A petition from the Toronto Ta x p a y e r s C o a l i t i o n demanding that city council immediately reduce its size by half was rebuffed by council. In doing so, it may have set the stage for a battle at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), that could see voters elect a 25-member council as early as next year. “We’ve been talking about

I truly believe that we must do what the taxpayers want. They want less politicians and more action. – Mayor Rob Ford

going to the OMB, we’re prepared to do so, and we’re going to consider everything that happened today,” said Matthew McGuire, president of the organization that he claims represents between 3,000 and 4,000 Toronto taxpayers. The group, which was formed following the 2010 municipal election, has been a consistent advocate for many of the policies supported by Mayor Rob Ford, including the Sheppard subway plan. When last month Toronto council supported going forward with a process to redraw ward boundaries in time for the 2018 election, the group launched a petition, demanding the move happen sooner and that council cut its membership in half.

The petition carries weight, because the City of Toronto Act includes a provision allowing a petition of 500 electors to force a municipality to vote on their proposal for redrawn electoral boundaries.

You can reduce politicians. Keep reducing ‘til you get to one. Lots of countries do that. It’s called dictatorship. – Coun. Adam Vaughan

The petition submitted by the taxpayers’ coalition had twice that number. Under the act, if council refuses to deal with the matter within 90 days the

matter can go to the OMB, and any decision they make can also be appealed there. Councillors debated the matter July 18, and voted 25-13 to deny the request. Mayor Rob Ford urged councillors to approve the smaller council. “I truly believe that we must do what the taxpayers want,” Ford said. “They want less politicians and more action.” Ford suggested the move would be “risky” for councillors to support, because “you’re going to run against an incumbent.” His brother, Doug Ford, took matters a step further and accused councillors opposing the immediate reduction in the size of council of simply attempting to protect their own jobs. “It’s not about working

for the people – it’s about working for themselves,” said Ford. “It goes across all political stripes.” As he finished, however, he noted, “I got all the lefties chirping behind me, folks, they want to get that gravy train going again.” Other councillors, however, pointed out the process council had set in place would do the same job. And many of them suggested Torontonians wouldn’t be well served by fewer representatives. “You can reduce politicians,” said Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan. “Keep reducing ‘til you get to one. Before You Spend Thousands on a New Roof… The Integrity Roof System

What Risks Do You Face? According to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks the ‘reputable’ roofing companies, roofing is at or near the top of the list for customer enquiries and complaints for the last five years in a row. Homeowners with limited experience in roof replacement rely on the roofing contractor to recommend the proper specifications. This process becomes confusing because there is no regulation in the industry, and each contractor recommends a different job. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: The roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks: the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately. What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting is a common cause of early shingle failure, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: All shingles are not the same. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, better quality shingles often provide you with the

T h e Wo r k s G o u r m e t Burger Bistro raised funds

through its grand opening in November 2012 when franchisees Manny Sohal and Gary Padda served complimentary meals to guests and members of the community. rahul gupta

The latest TTC web video instructs subway riders how to properly use the passenger assistance alarm (PAA). The yellow strip is found on all trains and is intended to quickly summon emergency services personnel to attend to someone in urgent need of aid. But as is pointed out in the five-minute Youtube clip, 70 per cent of the 6,000 PAA activations in 2012 were for nonemergencies and resulted in more than 50 hours in delays to commuters. Commuters may be forgiven if they do a double-take the next time they board a GO Transit vehicle. That’s because the regional transit agency has decided after nearly 50 years to revamp its traditional GO Green colour scheme. Stop Kiss named fan fave at Fringe Festival

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Roncesvalles Village resident Melissa Hood, producer and star of Fringe Festival favourite Stop Kiss says she’s thrilled the play has been named one of the best of this year’s lineup. The play, set in New York City, explores the unexpected love story between two female friends, a savvy city girl, who relishes in her magic eightball to make life decisions and a plucky teacher from St. Louis, who recently left her long-term boyfriend to pursue a controversial teaching fellowship in the Bronx. What follows is a new relationship rattled by a shocking and random act of violence. First written by American playwright Diana Son and

It hires a local garden centre, Vis Viva Gardens, to do the plantings and much of the work is sub-contracted to Parkdale Green Thumb Enterprises. “Our planters this year are not looking as good as they could and we are attributing it directly to the beating that they are taking,” Ramos said. People put trash in them, lean on them and crush the flowers and there has even been cases where people have vomited in them. The BIA spends about $80,000

a year on its 47 planters, hanging baskets and plantings, and maintenance to the parkettes and the commemorative garden, Teresa’s Place, at 1525 Dundas St. There are four annual plantings: spring, summer, fall and winter, and Ramos said vandalism is a yearround problem. There are some planters on the western edge of the BIA that Ramos said they have given up entirely on planting due to repeated theft of the plants. “These planters are there to be appreciated by everyone in the community,” he said. Ramos said there is the mistaken assumption by some that the City of Toronto plants the flowers, but he wants residents to understand the BIA does it all. “These planters, not just in Dundas West but all over the city, are provided by the commercial

He suggested reminding people that streetscaping efforts are paid for by the commercial property owners along Dundas Street West and their business tenants. Ramos asked business owners to point their security cameras at the planters to identify vandals and then ask them to stop. “If it happened to be the same person that caused $40,000 in damage, maybe there would be an incentive to recuperate that with a challenge.”

While the results of the pilot are limited to those electric car owners who volunteer to share their usage with Toronto Hydro, Odell said the information gleaned from the study shows energy usage spikes in the nighttime hours when home vehicle charging is strongest. “People are charging for a long period of time when they get at home at 6 p.m. right until two or three in the morning,” he said. “We’re seeing more strain on local distribution transformers and that’s when we see the EV usage landing.” Plug’ n Drive president Cara Clairman said EVs should be considered an attractive purchase because they are far less

Clairman said a central objective of her group was to increase the amount of public power charging stations available in the city, which currently stands at less than 10 according to the City of Toronto website, although stations are available at some car dealerships. “What we’re aiming for is putting in charging stations at places where people plan to be for an hour or so anyway, so it’s not inconvenient,” she said. “So, for example, the grocery store, the movie theatre, the mall, somewhere where you can just top up.”

Website to give park groups increased profile >>>from page 1 the website. “Our ultimate goal is to get people online to check out all the programs, to come and enjoy them as well as maybe contribute to their causes,” Caragianakos said. Raising awareness of the website will in turn promote all the different groups in High Park, such as Colborne Lodge, the High Park Zoo,

the High Park Nature Centre and the Natural Environment Committee, he said. The new and improved site is set to launch in August. “The aim is to create a youthful site for the greater park community,” said Sorys. The resurgence of the website was prompted by a couple of significant events, namely the loss of city funding for the zoo and the fire that

gutted the castle turret of the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground. “We needed to come up with a way to raise money and awareness on these issues, which prompted all the different groups in High Park to come together,” said Caragianakos, who credits Sorys and Buckell for their leadership. “With all this awareness and momentum going, and the zoo

being able to raise over $400,000, made us work together to keep the momentum going and to bring more awareness to what’s going on in High Park.” The campaign began just over a month ago. Pamphlets outlining how people can get involved by donating or participating in High Park activities are currently being distributed throughout the neigbhbourhood.

The new and improved site will include easily accessible information for park-users, links to different High Park groups and associations, a calendar of events as well as educational pieces. Stay tuned to www.highpark.org for further details.

udith Kidd relishes taking part in the free walking tours of High Park held on the first and third Sunday of each month. A relatively new resident of Swansea Village, Kidd said the walks have provided her the opportunity to explore the area, particularly lesser known places in High Park. “I’ve really enjoyed them,” Kidd said as she traversed one of the many trails in the park as part of a recent tour called ‘Tramping the Trails’. “The first one I went on was last year. It was based on a children’s book called Who Comes to the Park? What we did was visit

different viewpoints of scenes from the book. The author was here too.” This particular summer day dawned overcast and muggy, but the rain held off and as many as a dozen people joined in on the walk, led by Roncesvalles Village resident Mark Ellwood, of the Walking Tours Committee, a group that has been organizing the walks for about 12 years. “It’s quite the little committee. We usually get between 12 and 30 people out depending on the weather. When we walk, it’s often times around Grenadier Pond. They’re not for exercise, but for information and socialization.” Participants are asked to meet at the benches across the road from the south side

The ground we walk on is as intriguing as any other aspect of the park. – Mark Ellwood, Walking Tours Committee

of the Grenadier Restaurant and Cafe for each walk. This one, ‘Tramping the Trails,’ was described as an interpretive walk about paths – a last minute replacement. Julia Bennett was scheduled to lead a ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ tour, but was called out of town. “We tend to look at the sky, the trees, but this one’s about the ground. The ground we walk

on is as intriguing as any other aspect of the park,” Ellwood said. The walking tours encourage people to take a proprietorship role of High Park, to entice them to get involved in improvement projects and the like, he said. People tend to not pay attention to what they’re walking on. “We’re going to talk about who put this here,” said Ellwood, gesturing to the paved path he was standing on. “We’re going to go on different surfaces and discuss how they were formed. We don’t think about what we’re walking on and here we can. This is all about looking down at what we’re walking on.” Ellwood led the group down along several off-leash dog area paths, down into Spring

Valley, near the creek and back up across the top of the park, revealing that the less travelled, off-the-beaten path trails are his favourites. As the group proceeded down from the restaurant through a couple of chain-link gates into the off-leash area, Ellwood pointed out that this particular path did not exist two decades ago, however, as the Canadian Stage Shakespeare in High Park was founded, it has become more and more popular. The path continued past the outdoor CanStage, further into the cordoned off areas for dogs. “Nature decided what it wants to do – there are rivulets here. Man-made barriers like fences engineer how people explore the park >>>from page 16 interesting” intersection connecting Shakespeare in High Park and the off-leash area, Ellwood said fences have been erected to help “engineer how people move in the park.” “How do we create access to all areas, while protecting the natural environment from offleash dogs?” he mused. “We’re using fences to contain dogs, wildlife and people.” When one approaches a fork in the road, take it, encouraged Ellwood. “You can get lost on these trails. You forget you’re in the middle of the city,” said A.J. Alberti, a member of the Walking Tours Committee, who lives near Jane and Annette streets. As the group neared the allot-

ment gardens, where people can rent a plot of land to garden, Ellwood pointed to the remnants of old asphalt. Further along, he said the trail was part of a former fitness trail that goes back three decades when ‘ParticipACTION’ was popular. In 1996, the fitness trail became part of the off-leash area. Across from Spring Creek, through a gate leading out of the off-leash area is a path that Ellwood said, “invites itself to be followed,” in part because it’s difficult to see what lies ahead. Car-part art on display at Runnymede library LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Car-part-inspired masks by artist Jeff Mann, created by cutting, welding and distorting gas tanks, seats and oil pans, will be on display at the Runnymede library next month. Known as carchitecture, the work of artist Jeff Mann will be on display takes from Aug. 1 to 31, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. As an artist-in-residence at a technical college in 2004, Mann stripped out an old van from the junk yard for a project – “there were an infinite number of parts,” said Mann,

who has worked on cars in the past. “You wouldn’t think of a junk yard as a place that would provide art.” Mann said he struck gold when came across the diaphragm spring, out of the clutch. The Maine native recently moved to Kingston, Ont. to be closer to his elderly motherin-law. He and his wife owned a wholesale pottery business for years. Now, he spends most of his time sculpting. “I don’t make stuff with an idea in mind ahead of time,” he admitted. Masks composed primarily of car parts will be the focus of the show though some other works derived from car parts or car generated patterns will

also be included. Mann, a self-described environmentalist, said he believes society can exist with far fewer cars. The couple built their house in Maine with solar panels and kept goats. He and his wife now live close to downtown and walk most places. A selection of books from Runnymede Library, that examine the North American car culture, will accompany the show. Mann’s work is driven by a belief that we should learn to live with far fewer cars. Mann also offers workshops on printing T-shirts using car parts.
