In March, the ‘Field of Dreams: If you build it, they will run’ project was a recipient of the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s (MLSE) inaugural $50,000 grant as part of its Team Up Foundation Fund. “It took a lot of team effort,” Carmen Cruz, chair of the St. Luigi Catholic School >>>FIELD, page 5

The Perth Public School ‘Field of Dreams’ is yet another step closer to becoming reality. Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão’s second annual community barbecue this summer raised $55,000 toward transforming the elementary school’s yard from its current patch of bare asphalt into a four lane rubber running track and soccer pitch. “Each year, I am happy to host the Ward 18 community barbecue in support of a great local initiative,” announced Bailão in her monthly e-newsletter. Kids clinic at St. Joe’s where Andrew Mark Olynyk was treated to benefit from fundraiser LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Throughout his 16 short years, Andrew Mark Olynyk had a knack for inspiring those around him. “It was truly our privilege to be his parents,” said his mother Daria Olynyk. “You know your child, but after he passed away, people would tell us the impact he had on their lives. It was so humbling to know how your child had affected and helped so many others – one of his teachers came to us and said, ‘It’s not often you learn from your students; I learned a tremendous amount from Andrew.’” Andrew had the greatest sense of empathy, his mother says. He was one of the most empathetic people she has ever known, a passionate person, who wore his heart on his sleeve. “After he passed away, his older brother Stefan said, ‘I get it – I get what it was about Andrew: He was just about love.’” In October 2009, Andrew succumbed to hydrocephalus, a condition that causes a build-up of fluid inside the skull that leads to brain swelling, and an inoperable brainstem tumour about two years after his diagnosis. His death has left a hole in the lives of so many, especially his friends who first met Andrew in senior kindergarten at Rosethorn Jr. School near Rathburn Road and Kipling Avenue. Even though the group went its separate ways in Grade 6, all the kids stayed in touch. Jacqui Sirois, Jenna Boccia, Kayla Sabharwal, Lauren Howe, Teresa Haney, Sam Day, Patricia Batten and Natalia Lioutaia banded together to organize a fundraiser for their dear friend.

Above,(l-r) Lauren Howe, Natalia Lioutaia, Jenna Boccia, Sam Day, Jacqui Sirois and Teresa Haney have organized a fundraising event in memory of their friend Andrew Mark Olynyk (right), who passed away in October 2009 from a brainstem tumour. The fundraising event will be held tonight (July 26) at Earth Bloor West, a restaurant on Bloor Street West, just west of Jane Street with proceeds supporting the Just For Kids Clinic at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

“All the girls grew up with him,” said Lioutaia. “He was one of the most kind-hearted people. He was always happy – he was a great kid.” An Evening of Andrew takes place at Earth Bloor West, on Bloor Street West just west of Jane Street, tonight at 7:30 p.m. The red carpet, starthemed event will feature several of Andrew’s performer friends, fellow classmates at the Etobicoke School of the Arts and fellow singers with the Canadian Children’s Opera Company. Proceeds will go to the Just For Kids Clinic at St. Joseph’s Health Centre where Andrew was treated and cared for, especially by his pediatrician, Dr. Dilip Mehta,

a “skilled” and “compassionate” physician, said Olynyk. “When we look back on it, we saw changes two years prior to when he was diagnosed,” said Olynyk. “His sleep patterns changed; he couldn’t tolerate certain foods he could once eat.” As student council president in Grade 8, Andrew wanted to make sure his classmates received a professionally designed year book. He was typically so organized and focused, but all of a sudden had difficulty completing a task, which his mother said was “highly unusual.” On a European tour with the Canadian Children’s Opera

Company, which Olynyk chaperoned, Andrew told his mother he could no longer sing. Olynyk chalked it up to his maturing voice, but he insisted, “No, I really can’t sing.” “His issues were in the brain stem. All nerves that pass through the brain stem control basic bodily functions,” Olynyk said. When Andrew came to the conclusion that his deteriorating health left him unable to pursue his love of musical theatre – he and his friends used to perform productions of Chicago and Pirates of the Caribbean at recess, said Lioutaia – he developed a passion for cooking, in part to “eat smart” to combat his illness.

GREG DOUGLAS

Age: 22 Sport: Sailing, Finn class Bloor West roots: Born in St. Michael, Barbados; currently lives in Swansea Competition dates: Douglas’ Olympic event starts in London on Sunday, July 29 through to Thursday, Aug. 5. Website: gregdouglassailing.com Q&A:

1. What are you most looking forward to at the Games? “I’m looking forward to competing. I will be competing against the very best in my sport who will be trying their hardest. I am looking forward to battling it out on the race course with those guys.”

2. What’s your training strategy? “I train on the water five days a week and in the gym six days a week. My typical day consists of waking up, eating a large breakfast and then heading to the gym for a morning cardio session. Following that I head out on the water for about three hours then back in the gym for a weight lifting session. During these days I will generally burn around 5,000 to 6,000 calories.”

Andrew, according to his mother, “would stop at nothing” to fight his condition going so far as to seek treatment only available in Europe all the while maintaining a positive attitude. “(Andrew) really cared about people in his life. He listened to what they were saying. If you can understand what they need, you can help them. He was able to say, ‘Follow your dreams, follow your passion, be the person you want to be,’” said Olynyk. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and can be purchased online at www.foundation.stjoe. on.ca/ or at the door for an additional $5.

Swansea resident and Olympic athlete Greg Douglas will take to the waves sailing at the London 2012 Olympics this summer.

3. Reflections on how far you’ve come? “I have come a long way, but I have further to go. I plan to keep training for the 2016 Olympics. The hard

work over the past two years have been tough. I am travelling pretty much all the time, which starts to burn you out. I will be going back to school this fall so I’m looking forward to being in one place for

4. What would you like to say to the folks back home? “I would like to thank everyone for the support leading up to the Olympics. The Olympic fever is starting to build, which is very exciting and amateur athletes are being put in the spotlight, which is nice. I would also like to encourage the kids back home to not be afraid to try different sports. In Canada we tend to only stick to playing the major sports when we are younger, but there are so many different sports out there that you may end up really enjoying and excelling at.” 5. Trivia: “I always wear a Toronto Blue Jays hat at competitions. I wore one at a competition two years ago and have worn one at everyone since then. Also I have no green on my boat.”

>>>from page 1 Advisory Council, told The Villager at the time. “Two schools united.” Students, parents and community members are “greatly thankful” for the ongoing support the project has received, said Cruz. Once created, the new and improved school yard will serve more than 600 students at both the Junction Triangle Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 schools in addition to the

140 kids who are members at the nearby Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club. The playground redevelopment project was one of four charities to receive a $50,000 grant from MLSE’s online competition. The MLSE received more than 70 submissions and more than 225,000 online votes were cast during two public voting phases over a twomonth period. Perth Public School is bor-

dered by train tracks, which makes it difficult for its students to access other community recreation centres. This is just one of the reasons this playground rejuvenation is so crucial, says the redevelopment committee. Bailão’s community barbecue included a raffle that included a brand-new Vespa scooter up for grabs, a jumping castle and face painting for the kids and a lot of food and entertainment.

City council decisions a joke

The Bloor West Villager is published every Thursday at 307 Humberline Dr., Toronto, ON M9W 5V1, by Toronto Community News, a Division of Metroland Media Group Ltd.

Balance needs of all cyclists L

ike many issues in Toronto, cycling and where it takes place has become one pitting the political left and right against each other. They are battling it out on the floor of council, and sadly also on the streets of our city. As North York Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong told Toronto Community News in our special feature on cycling in the city on pages 10 and 11 of today’s newspaper, the main bone of contention is lack of space on Toronto’s streets. “Because there’s a limited amount of geography, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are all competing for the our view same space,” he explained. And nobody seems willing to Recreational give up any ground. There are two kinds of cyclists and commuter in Toronto, those who ride to commute and those who ride cyclists must for recreation. What we don’t want to see is the political battles be considered ending up costing either groups of riders. We need good and safe cycling routes along our streets for those who depend on their bikes to move around. We also need recreational runs that all can enjoy at a relaxed pace. And we don’t need one at the expense of the other. As part of our feature today, we decided to take a look at nine bike rides that recreational riders across Toronto could enjoy. All these rides are on bike paths, separate from city roads and free of cars for almost their entire routes. These are runs that both experienced riders and those who are new to cycling can enjoy by themselves or with their families, confident that they won’t have to negotiate through busy traffic or dangerous intersections. Hopefully readers will try one of these rides for themselves. There are some great choices and they highlight much of Toronto’s natural, and far too often hidden, beauty. Valleys make up so much of our city’s landscape, and planners have not been shy about running cycling (and pedestrian) paths along them. There are some beautiful runs through Taylor Creek, along the Don River and Highland Creek that have riders thinking they are miles away from Canada’s largest city. The featured rides also focus on the close connection between the city and Lake Ontario. While it is not yet possible to ride along the lake from one end of Toronto to the other only on a bike path, large sections are accessible. There are no shortages of great, safe rides in the city and we encourage our readers to try one of the runs we’ve highlighted today. Toronto Community News is a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. To the editor: Since our current councillors cannot agree on a decent transit system, maybe it’s time the taxpayers have a say on GTA transit. Actually I believe that occurred in the past election. It is so obvious to the public that our current councillors have egos bigger than city hall itself. I recently attended our annual family reunion in the Kingston area and was the only GTA person in attendance. Everyone commented about how they feel sorry for us and Toronto residents as our council has made decisions that have become a joke. Since nothing really has transpired positively since the spring transit decisions, and deferred to October, maybe it’s time to sell our properties before they vote to expropriate our land and make it a casino. Council will tell us of this move when the bulldozers come zipping down the street. R. Smith

Olympic opening ceremonies are a capital idea

A

re you as psyched as I am for the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics tomorrow night in jolly old London? What can I say? They always reel me in like a prized tuna. The best part of the festivities for my money is when the athletes enter the stadium. As soon as I hear each country introduced my mind goes into overdrive, just like it used to when I was in public school. Back then, whenever I heard a country name I would blurt out the capital city faster than Jesse James on steroids. I swear I knew every capital when I was a kid. (For the record, I swear I didn’t swear as a kid.) My favourite capital was Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. It was always my numero uno because it was fun to say. I still get a kick out of saying it.

but seriously

jamie wayne

I also knew that the capital of Paraguay was Asuncion and the capital of Uruguay was Montevideo and I never confused them. Today? The capital swagger is gone. With good reason. There are 204 teams in these Summer Olympics. How can I be expected to know 204 capitals when I didn’t know there were that many countries? There aren’t, as it turns out. There are actually only 196 independent countries. Three of them are newer and don’t have Olympic national bodies yet, so only 193 will be represented in London. The balance of the teams

is made of 11 territories. Needless to say, considering I didn’t know there would be 11 territories competing in London I couldn’t possibly know their capitals, either. There’s another reason remembering capitals isn’t as easy as it once was is because many capitals themselves are not what they used to be. There have been several capital city name changes over the years. I couldn’t tell you what they all are, I haven’t kept up. Still, I’ll give it my best shot Friday. Another area I’ll be focusing on is flag identification. I used to be pretty good at that, too. But, like capitals, many flags have changed. And, as usual, I’ll be testing my knowledge on national anthems. I like to see if I can hum the appropriate national anthem when each contingent of

athletes walks in, but I seem to know fewer and fewer anthems these days, also. Trying to predict who the flag bearers are for each country is always a good time, as is trying to pick out countries just by looking at the teams’ outfits. Lastly, I always try to see if I can come up with an official sponsor from each country – such as the Official Burrito of Mexico, the Official Souvlaki of Greece, the Official Pasta of Italy, and so on. One official sponsor I never have to guess at is ours. That’s because, unlike capitals, anthems and flags, it never changes over the years – the Official Excuse: Lack of government funding. n Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. YORK: While plans are in the works to eventually close what is approximately a one-kilometre gap between Crawford-Jones Memorial Park (near Weston Road and Hwy. 401) and Cruickshank Park in Weston, local riders in York can still enjoy a pleasant ride. However, the gap prevents Rexdale and west North York residents from being able to use what is otherwise an essentially

BLOOR WEST: For cyclists living in the downtown west end, who not only use their bikes for pleasure, but also for every day transportation, the most pleasant ride is one free from cars. And that is what makes the West Toronto Railpath a popular and pleasant shortcut between Parkdale and the Junction. The two-kilometre long trail begins at

uninterrupted off-road path running from Steeles Avenue to downtown Toronto via the Humber and Martin Goodman Trails. The route from Cruickshank Park to Lake Ontario, save for a small stretch through local, residential streets near the Humber Marshes, is relatively unimpeded and takes, on average, an hour to complete one way.

Cariboo Avenue, just north of the Dupont and Dundas intersection, and runs southeast to Dundas Street West at Sterling Road with various access points. Built on abandoned railway beds, the West Toronto Railpath was completed in 2009. It is an asphalt path lined with greenery, indigenous plantings and brick buildings.

Bloor West

Etobicoke ETOBICOKE: From the Humber River Pedestrian Bridge, cyclists have two options: head up the river path to the northern reaches of Etobicoke, or west along Etobicoke’s picturesque Lake Ontario waterfront. The latter, two-kilometre option is the more scenic, and has the added bonus of no traffic – unless, of course, you consider the steady stream of cyclists, in-line skaters, dog walkers, and family picnickers out for some fresh air and exercise. For the hardcore cyclists, the waterfront trail boasts separate, paved lanes for bikes, while for those out for a more leisurely ride, there are plenty of stops along the path – take in some history at the Palace Pier

PARKDALE: For cyclists looking to head north from Parkdale to the Junction, or just looking for a pleasant car-free ride, the West Toronto Railpath offers a two-kilometre trail between Sterling Avenue at Dundas Street West and Cariboo Avenue, north of Dupont Street. But for many bike enthusiasts, the dream is to see this tree-lined trail, winner Lake Ontario

of an Urban Design Award of Excellence, extended south along the GO train tracks to south of Queen Street West toward downtown Toronto. If completed, the Railpath would give more than 250,000 Toronto residents living in the west end and travelling downtown a sustainable transportation link with the downtown core.

Cyclist-driver conflict only natural in Toronto Motorists, pedestrians, cyclists all competing for limited space DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

W

hen Rob Ford was elected Mayor of Toronto in 2010, one might be forgiven for thinking that bicyclists’ time had passed. As a councillor, Ford famously compared cycling in traffic to “swimming with the sharks,” adding, “Roads are built for buses cars and trucks, not for people on bikes. My heart bleeds for them

when someone gets killed, but it’s their own fault at the end of the day.” At council’s inaugural meeting, the mayor’s chosen keynote speaker Don Cherry arrived in a hot pink suit, which he said he wore for “all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles and everything.” The new administration signalled early that it would take a very different route than the previous crew under David Miller, which favoured separated bike lanes on roads. In short order, city council had removed bike lanes on Pharmacy and Birchmount avenues in Scarborough at the request of the local councillor, and another, higher-profile bike lane on Jarvis Street despite the protests of the

local councillor there. The shift was a result of more than the will of a mayor more comfortable on four wheels than two. Since before amalgamation, cars and bicycles have had an uneasy relationship on Toronto streets. Don Valley East Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, who chairs the city’s works committee, said the conflict is only natural, “because there’s a limited amount of geography — pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are all competing for the same space.” As works chair, Minnan-Wong has carriage of the Ford administration’s cycling plan, which in broad strokes is about separating motorists from cyclists wherever possible.

Ford ran on creating a Bikeway Network — which includes 100 kilometres of off-road recreational bike paths. Some of those paths running along Hydro corridors were approved by the previous administration. Minnan-Wong has pressed the issue further, and the city embarked on a plan to make some separated bike lanes in the downtown — initially on Wellesley and Sherbourne streets, and eventually along Richmond and Adelaide streets in the core. “Everybody has a different opinion,” said Minnan-Wong. “But I think it makes for a safer arrangement for cyclists, and I think the majority of cyclists prefer it.” Scarborough Centre Councillor

Glenn De Baeremaeker chaired the works committee during Miller’s term, and has made a point of making a 20-kilometre commute from his home in Scarborough to city hall by bicycle. He said the separated lanes are a good idea — but maintains that the mayor’s plan focussing on off-road cycling doesn’t help the growing number of utilitarian cyclists in the city. “Separated bike lanes are good, and every cyclist and driver should welcome them,” he said. “Those lanes are complicated things to do, I encourage the bike community and Denzil MinnanWong. But one kilometre of separated bike lane doesn’t make up for cancelling 100 kilometres of bike lanes on roads.”

CITY CENTRE: There’s a long and rewarding ride ahead for cyclists who want to brave the Lower Don River trail, that stretches eight kilometres from Don Mills Road and the Don Valley Parkway south along the Don to Lake Shore Boulevard. At the best of times, it’s a good idea to bring water. But the ride is rich with sights

through Taylor Creek Park has long been a favourite family biking route. After a mid-July rainstorm this year, the shady route seemed more of an Iron Man family biking route. Running 3.5 kilometres from Victoria Park Avenue to Don Mills Road and the Don Valley Parkway, the route was slick

Otherwise, it’s a gentle ride, uphill from Don Mills, through valley lands that snake behind the Ontario Science Centre, past Sunnybrook Park, and deep north through the lush, thick woods lining Wilket Creek. Once you arrive, you’ll have to dismount as bicycles are prohibited in the gardens. But there are bike rings and benches.

and landmarks, and worth the trip. The Prince Edward Viaduct is at its most impressive seen from the saddle of a bicycle below, and urban wildlife abounds. Heading towards the new crossing at Pottery Road, a lone chipmunk tempts fate crossing the path. Further south, where the trail dips underneath Eastern Avenue, a flock of geese stand guard. with mud, and several bridges have now been washed out. Just past Lumsden Avenue, a downed tree called for a cyclist ‘portage’ through the branches. Two of the wooden bridges are washed out, and two others have the safety railing snapped off. It’s a reminder that even in well-groomed Toronto parks, nature still reigns supreme.

| THE VILLAGER | Thursday, July 26, 2012

NORTH YORK: The five-kilometre ride between Edwards Gardens and Taylor Creek Park is an easy run—for the most part. However, even experienced cyclists will want to get off their bikes and walk the wooden foot-bridge that curves over the CNR tracks cutting through the valley.

Scarborough

9

SCARBOROUGH: The ride from Greenvale Park, just north of Kingston Road across from the Guildwood GO station, through the Highland Creek Valley and along the shores of Lake Ontario to the Port Union Village Common Park, is a run of approximately 12 kilometres which takes in a wide variety of features and parkland through southeast Scarborough. The run starts with a steep hill and a warning for cyclists to dismount at the Greenvale Park entrance, but levels off nicely. It is a bit smelly, due to sewers running underground near the Lawrence bridge, along the creek into Morningside Park. After that it rolls through the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.

Cyclists cross under Old Kingston Road and continue along beside the creek all the way to Lake Ontario. There’s lots of opportunity to see wildlife on this ride, a pair of deer were spotted by the Morningside bridge, and it’s a fun run for kids with mostly level riding and lots of sites to see.

Lake Ontario

Beach

8

BEACH: On most weekends, taking a bike to the Beach is an exercise in frustration: just the same as is taking a picnic, a volleyball, a pair of roller blades or an automobile is. Everyone else has the same idea. On weekdays, it’s a different story; the run east from Leslie Street will take you a good five kilometres, past the new TTC vehicle storage facility, a skateboard park, and the millennium-project Woodbine Park into the

Beach proper. It’s good manners to stay off the Boardwalk – there are still a few visitors taking a stroll – but it’s a nice, safe ride through Woodbine Beach, Kew Gardens and Beaches Park. The bike route officially ends around Balsam Avenue; but a few hundred metres further east, and you’ll end up at the stunning R.C. Harris Water Filtration Plant.

Linear park a venue for community gatherings >>>from page 1 Friends of West Toronto Railpath. “The whole concept wasn’t on the radar. People weren’t familiar with what it was. Now that phase one has been completed, there’s a lot more interest in getting phase two done because people can see it and see the positives of it.” The railpath stretches 2.1 kilometres of land between Cariboo Avenue to the Dundas Street West and Lansdowne Avenue area to south of Bloor Street West. The city acquired the land in 2001 to develop the multi-use trail for both recreational and commuter purposes. Construction began in

June of 2008 and was completed that September. The railpath winds its way along the abandoned railway beds that have been out of commission for more than four decades. Because the rail corridor has a substantial width, the railpath does not interfere with existing train routes. The railpath park’s features include a system of wayfaring signs indicating each access point along the route. Phase two has always been part of the plan, said Dobson during an interview at his home in the Perth and Wallace avenues-area, mere metres from the Wallace Avenue railpath entrance.

But momentum has slowed somewhat due to Metrolinx projects – the railpath shares the corridor with the provincial transportation agency, Dobson pointed out. The railpath has become so much more than a pedestrian, in-line skating, cycling and skateboarding pathway. It has become a venue for the community to meet and socialize where festivals, movies and charity events are held. “Its actual uses have gone far beyond what its original purpose was envisioned for. It’s been a pleasant surprise,” said Dobson, who likens the railpath to New York’s High Line, a public park

built on a historic freight 2011. “We saw hawks rail line elevated above the there, lots of insects and streets on Manhattan’s butterflies, beautiful views West Side. “It’s about - we wanted to maintain re-imagining space in an that quality.” urban environTo make phase ment.” two a reality, a Award-winning feasibility study landscape architect will be conScott Torrance can ducted. support and ideas, he said. Construction should begin in 2014. Phase two will see the railpath built to just south of Queen Street West. “The goal was to get to Strachan Avenue, but the rail corridor along King Street is crowded,” said Dobson. “It looks like it’s impossible to have space so we’re looking at other options to get to King.” Phase two has political support from city council. The railpath is on the mayor’s priority list for cycling trails. “The best thing people can do is to tell their councillor to make sure it’s their priority,” said Dobson.

>>>from page 1 to submit their ideas. “We have no criteria,” stated Gaigalas, although the campaign is not a new one to the town hall. A 2005 naming effort resulted in the moniker “The Founders’ Room” as part of phase one of the building’s redevelopment. According to historical documents, the Village of Swansea was incorporated in 1926. Its seal features the first-ever European explorer to set foot in the area, Etienne Brule, in 1615. First Nations members were the first inhabitants of Swansea hundreds of years ago. Swansea is bordered by several bodies of water,

including Lake Ontario, the Humber River and Grenadier Pond. It wasn’t until 1967 that the Village of Swansea, along with Forest Hill Village, was annexed to the City of Toronto. Prominent Swansea-area residents, included author Lucy Maud Montgomery writer of the Anne of Green Gables series. She lived on Riverside Drive from 1935 to 1942. A park at the corner of Riverside Crescent and Riverside Drive commemorates Montgomery. The town hall offers a wide variety of activities and events from exercise classes to games and life skills courses. It boasts

a dental clinic, a memorial library, a day care, a seniors’ association and historical society. It is associated with several community groups, such as the Swansea Area Ratepayers’ Association and the Swansea Horticultural Society. Once constructed, the new ravine-level room will be more than 500 square feet and situated on the northwest corner of the building. To submit suggestions, email frontdesk@swanseatownhall.ca or fill out a form at the front desk at 95 Lavinia Ave. by Aug. 30. Everyone is invited to include what inspired their name.

News of a Black Creek Drive and Weston Road-area shooting before midnight Friday night that led police officers to two victims in a bullet-riddled car at the corner of Jane and Bloor West streets has left the community feeling a little leery in a typically quiet and safe neighbourhood. Twelve Division Staff Sgt. Frank Delio was tight-lipped about the incident saying it was “under major investigation.” “It’s a work in progress,” the officer told The Villager on Monday. “We’re following a lot of leads.” Police responded to the sound of gunshots near Black Creek Drive and Weston Road

around 11:30 p.m. Not long after, two men, a 19-year-old with a gunshot wound to his leg and a 21-year-old with a gunshot wound to his arm, were found in the car pierced with bullets. Both were taken to St. Joseph’s Health Centre. Police are looking for a suspect described as a darkskinned man in his late teens, 5’9” with a shaved head. He was wearing a white T-shirt. Although both a local Business Improvement Area (BIA) representative and the local councillor admitted such a discovery in the area is disconcerting, the incident did not cause panic among merchants or residents. “I think we haven’t heard comments because the actual

shooting happened north of us,” said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette. “It’s still shocking for those close to home. This goes back to the fact that if it was harder to get guns and bullets, you wouldn’t be grabbing for a gun.” The city needs to do more to get handguns and ammunition off the streets, added the councillor. Former BIA Chair Alex Ling, proprietor of Ling’s Importers, called the incident “scary” and unexpected for the area. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416−808−1200, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416−222−TIPS (8477), or online at www.222tips.com – Lisa Rainford

TTCriders group gives transit commission failing grade RAHUL GUPTA @TOinTransit When it comes to affordability, accessibility and frequency of service, the TTC fails dismally, according to a recent report released by a transit advocacy group. In its report card measuring the TTC’s performance over the last year, the group TTCriders says the transit commission gets a failing

grade for charging expensive fares, not providing fully accessible service to the disabled and for not providing a level of service that reflects increased ridership. In terms of environmental sustainability, the TTC gets no mark since it doesn’t publicize information on the levels of smog emissions and greenhouse gases that are reduced through the use of public transit.

“The report card makes it clear the TTC is not on track to building a public transit system that serves the need of transit users,” said TTCriders spokesperson Franz Hartmann during a press conference at city hall. Hartmann, who is the executive director of the Toronto Environmental Alliance, said the TTC does receive a passing mark for calling for transit expansion and

Special transit council formed to discuss regional transit options RAHUL GUPTA @TOinTransit Agnes Gee hates her commute. The Barrie resident spends upwards of four hours per day riding the GO bus to downtown Toronto, where she works. She’d rather drive, but the bus is her only affordable option right now, she says. “It sucks, pure and simple,” said Gee, who was sitting outside the Union Station GO bus terminal last Friday morning. “We need more transit.” The Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance says it wants to hear more from commuters like Gee who are frustrated with the slow growth of a regional transit network connecting Toronto with surrounding municipalities making up the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The level of congestion worsens as the region grows ever larger – projections indicate by 2031 the GTHA will have added over three million people. CivicAction has formed a special council of advocates (or champions),

dedicated to kick-starting a public conversation about transit. Last Friday, seven members of the Regional Transportation Champions Council were introduced to the media by group chair John Tory and CEO Mitzie Hunter. In all, 27 members have already been named. Tory said the council will meet together and with the public to discuss how to create awareness for a regional transit strategy in line with the Metrolinx Big Move, which calls for $40 billion of transit investment over the next 25 years. The initial list of champions includes business, public sector and not-for-profit leaders, individuals from all walks of life who will work together and with the public to create awareness not only for transit expansion, but the means to pay for it, said Tory. “We think now is the time to discuss and to decide to fully engage the public in this much-needed dialogue,” said Tory at the event. The members of the council are former City of Toronto chief planner Paul Bedford,

Joe Berridge from Urban Strategies, Michael Cooper of Dundee REIT, Patrick Dillon from the Provincial Building and Trades Council of Ontario, Blake Hutcheson of the Oxford Properties Group, the Canadian Automobile Association’s Faye Lyons and Abdul Hai Patel of the Canadian Council of Imams. The council, which will eventually number 40 in total, has already begun to meet and strategize about a fall campaign, which it hopes will get the public clamouring for better transit rather than politicians who can’t work together, said Tory. Bedford, a longtime advocate for regional transit funding said it will take around three billion dollars a year in dedicated transit funding if the region can meet its goal in providing a comprehensive network paid entirely through funding tools such as a GTHA sales tax or parking levy. “This is essential that we solve this,” said Bedford. “Other regions around North America and the world are doing this. We need to do the same.”

examining ways to raise long-term funding through tax dollars. Hartmann said solutions for increasing the TTC’s performance lie in recognizing the importance of not only expanding the current system, but maintaining it as well. “We have to invest in both maintaining current service and we need to expand it,” he said. “If we don’t, we doom ourselves and transit riders to economic and environmental

harm.” Hartmann said TTCriders was in constant contact with TTC brass, and was pleased the commission has begun to compile its own performance stats, which are released daily. “The more information that’s out there, the better it will help riders,” he said. Metrolinx CEO wants transit funding commitment from federal government RAHUL GUPTA @TOinTransit The CEO of provincial transit planner Metrolinx said the agency plans to go out this fall and speak with the general public about how to pay for transit expansion. While he did not elaborate on a schedule for the public consultations, Bruce McCuaig said Metrolinx wants to get feedback across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) on the range of revenue generating measures the agency is considering on behalf of the province. “Whether it’s one funding stream or a combination, that’s the conversation we have to have with the public,” said McCuaig, who joined Metrolinx in 2010. “If you go around the world you’ll see communities have these types of conversations all the time.” While Metrolinx must report to the provincial government in 2013 on how to pay for transit funding, McCuaig, who was the deputy minister of transportation for the Liberals before he joined the planning agency, said residents of the

made it crucial to support transit investment. “The common message from the federal government should be a long term commitment to transit and transportation,” he said. “National investment in transit should be a cornerstone of what municipalities can rely upon.” McCuaig said the scrapped OneCity transit proposal, which called for a Scarborough subway along the existing rapid transit line, conflicted directly with approval from citay council last spring for an LRT line, which has already received funding from the ministry of transportation. “We have alignment with the city and the province on that project,” said McCuaig. “What we have with OneCity is two councillors who have come forward saying they have a different vision and they think we should go back and review that piece.”

GTHA can’t expect large scale spending from the province for transit to continue. He said a public conversation is necessary to determine how to best find money for projects years down the road. “Governments really don’t have the financial wherewithal to keep investing at a level they have been investing in,” he said. “I don’t think we can expect the next 18 billion dollars to come from the Ontario treasury.” Nonetheless he called on the federal Best Buy CORRECTION NOTICE government to boost NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY its support for transit JULY 20 CORPORATE FLYER Please be advised that spending, saying the this product: 7” Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (WebCode: economic strength of 10206559) advertised on the July 20 flyer, page 1, may not be available for purchase in select stores Toronto and surround- due to limited inventory and delays in shipment. ing municipalities We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

Most of the model lineup has experienced sales gains, including the flagship Maxima sedan, which is up 47.2 per cent over last year including a jump of 88.2 per cent in the month of June alone. For 2012, the Maxima has a few tweaks. A refreshed exterior brings a new front grille design, new rear combination lights and new 18- and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheel designs. Inside, interior enhancements include a new white-coloured meter cluster illumination, a variety of new trim materials and a new beige interior colour. There is also a new audio segment display and audio/HVAC knob design. Nissan bills the Maxima as a ‘four door sports car’, and there’s no denying it caters to the driving enthusiast who wants a sporty, everyday sedan with decent interior room and plenty of trunk space when

it’s required. The Maxima is one of the betterlooking sedans in the class with its ‘liquid motion’ design theme that focuses on the flow of its surfaces like an undulating wave. The distinctive character lines run from the front to the bulging rear flanks, part of the wave-shape design. The look starts with the aggressive stance and the deeply sculpted body and fender treatment. With a front end that features supercar GTR-like styling, the Maxima has large wraparound L-shaped headlights that add a unique dimension to the overall design. Nissan refers to the hood as having a ‘catamaran’style – high on the sides with a bulge in the middle. The interior has an upscale look and feel. It has what Nissan calls a ‘super cockpit’ to give that sports car look but with more space for driver and passenger alike. Lots of soft-touch materials, chrome surrounds on the gauges and other trim accents add to the luxury When the new generation

debuted in 2009, it came with a huge boost in power thanks to the 3.5-litre DOHC V6 that came with it. That engine remains today, producing 290 hp and 261 lb/ft of torque. The exhaust has been tuned to provide a sporty, satisfying sound. All 2012 all Maximas come with a revised continuously-variable transmission (CVT) Nissan engineers say has been finessed to improve responsiveness and strike a balance between sport and comfort. If better driving dynamics is your goal, stick it in Ds mode (Drive Sport) that enhances sport driving through increased acceleration feel with higher engine revs, automatic engine braking and maintaining engine speed during cornering. The system matches vehicle speed with engine rpms with the driver’s intended acceleration input. Advancements have also been made with the suspension, steering, and braking system to pro-

duce a more sports-car-like feel on the road. Despite this being a front-driver with lots of pep, you’ll notice that torque steer has been virtually eliminated. The end result is a vehicle that is quick, stable in all driving situations, easy to manoeuvre and quiet inside. The speed-sensitive power steering works well to get you where you want to go, even in tight parking lot situations. For 2012, the Maxima is offered in Canada as one well-equipped model, starting at $37,880. However, three are three option packages – Premium ($2,800), Sport

($2, 350) and Navigation ($2,2000) that add a lot more bells and whistles to the base car. The Premium Package includes all Sport features plus heated and cooled front seats, cherry wood trim, power rear window sunshades, fold-down rear seat armrest, premium mood lighting, dual panel moonroof and 18-inch alloys. Even in its seventh generation, the 2012 Nissan Maxima still has what it takes to excite the driver in all of us. – Rob Beintema Metroland Media
