Clay and Paper Theatre’s summer show Animal Nature was inspired in part by founder David Anderson’s wintertime trip to the grocery store. “My partner and I were in our local Metro store grocery shopping one night in February of last year. As we got out of the car, we noticed a little furry animal scurrying under me. I thought, Oh, my god, it’s a rat,” Anderson recalled. “One of the workers, a grocer, who was outside having a smoke said, ‘No, it’s a possum. I’ve seen them around.’ He had crawled up underneath our car. He wouldn’t get out.” Even after the couple finished their grocery shopping, the creature still hadn’t reappeared. And so, they drove – “about three miles an hour home.” “Luckily, it was only three blocks,” Anderson said. The next day, he was gone. However, the animal had left an impression and got Anderson thinking about his favourite children’s cartoon character, Pogo the Possum, created by >>>SHOW, page 15

Shoppers Drug Mart painstakingly maintained its exterior – while repairing some damage to door and window panes, the ticket booth, stage, and atmospheric ceiling, just as Chapters did so previously. The theatre’s history and significant role in the community was celebrated during a plaque unveiling ceremony, hosted by Heritage Toronto, >>>THEATRE, page 7
