Clay and Paper Theatre’s summer show Animal Nature was inspired in part by founder David Anderson’s wintertime trip to the grocery store. “My partner and I were in our local Metro store grocery shopping one night in February of last year. As we got out of the car, we noticed a little furry animal scurrying under me. I thought, Oh, my god, it’s a rat,” Anderson recalled. “One of the workers, a grocer, who was outside having a smoke said, ‘No, it’s a possum. I’ve seen them around.’ He had crawled up underneath our car. He wouldn’t get out.” Even after the couple finished their grocery shopping, the creature still hadn’t reappeared. And so, they drove – “about three miles an hour home.” “Luckily, it was only three blocks,” Anderson said. The next day, he was gone. However, the animal had left an impression and got Anderson thinking about his favourite children’s cartoon character, Pogo the Possum, created by >>>SHOW, page 15

Pan Am cycling road races whip through High Park ‘What better way to support the athletes than to cheer them on?’ TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Canada dominated Pan Am women’s road race cycling in blistering heat Saturday afternoon with Vancouver’s Jasmin Glaesser rising to top the podium, her teammate Allison Beveridge, 22, of Calgary finishing 34 seconds behind her to take bronze. Glaesser, 23, beat Cuban cyclist Marlies Mejias, 22, in a sprint to the finish. Glaesser won the race in 2:07.17. It is her fourth Pan Am Games’ medal. Glaesser and Beveridge won gold earlier in the Games in the team pursuit on the cycling track, along with teammates Laura Brown, 28, and Kirsti Lay, 27. They set a Pan Am record. Lay finished 29th Saturday with a time of 2:07.57. Some 30 or so spectators on the northeast and southeast corners of Colbourne Lodge and Centre roads in High Park rang cowbells, waved Canadian flags and cheered exuberantly as the tight cycling pack passed, first up the hill then a few minutes later, down another turn. “I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be great to see this amazing event.’ The Games are in Toronto. What better way to support the athletes than to cheer them on? “And it’s likely the closest we’ll ever get to (seeing) the Olympics,” said Roncesvalles resident Margaret, who declined to give her last name. Most spectators sported the traditional Canadian summer uniform — baseball cap, T-shirt and shorts. Pan Am officials issued a heat alert Saturday urging spectators to wear a hat, sunscreen and stay hydrated as the mercury climbed to 34C with the humidex under a mix of sun and cloud. Toronto police officers escaped the sweltering sun under the shelter

of a tree on a Coe Hill Drive resident’s front lawn. Bermuda’s Zoenique Williams, 30, fell far behind the pack during the first circuit. The crowd roared, “Let’s go, Canada!” as the pack passed again for the second time. Moments later, the crowd swelled again in cheers as Williams rode past behind lap cars. The Bermudian did not finish the race. Reigning under 13 Ontario road race champion Katrina Pawley Mason, 12, cheered on Canada with her parents and younger sister. The family travelled in from Windsor, ON for the Pan Am road races. “It feels great to see these top athletes road racing,” Katrina said. Her father George Mason, sport-

ing a red-and-white Canada cycling jersey, called the race “inspiring” to his daughter. The pair have run the road race circuit in High Park. Mason has cycled it. “It’s great to see women competing,” he said. “Not just the Tour de France, which is all men. It’s pretty encouraging to see top athletes in the world compete. In 10 years, that could be Katrina.” The women’s and then men’s cycling road races Saturday afternoon snarled eastbound traffic on The Queensway all the way back to Stephen Drive.

Canada’s Allison Beveridge, left, and Jasmin Glaesser lean into a turn and head down Colbrone Lodge Road in High Park during the Pan Am Games women’s cycling road race on Saturday.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered Thursday evening at the Old Mill Toronto for a final farewell party to bid adieu to its president Michael Kalmar and VP of finance Blain Parsons after more than two decades owning and operating the century-old landmark. The iconic restaurant, hotel and banquet complex on the bank of the Humber River has been sold to a property management group directed by Frank De Luca, a longtime Etobicoke resident. “It’s better than a wedding,” Kalmar quipped, “because I know everyone here.” After partaking in appetizers and beverages, guests were treated to a trip down memory lane through stories shared by Kalmar and Parsons’ long time friends and coworkers, as well as Kalmar’s son. Natalie Bauer, Old Mill Toronto’s director of marketing, communications and events, called Kalmar a “fabulous leader, an extraordinary

person, who I think is quite awesome.” “I’m sad because when I think of the Old Mill, I’ll think of you. You’re one of the best mentors I’ve ever had,” Bauer said. Catering manager Helen Weech expressed her mock frustration at Kalmar’s departure. “I was supposed to retire before you,” she pretended to scold. Kalmar’s son, Lorne, took a turn behind the microphone to share memories and express gratitude and pride for his father. “I grew up here, running around. We consider this a second home,” Lorne said of the Old Mill, standing beside his two sisters, Rachel and Alana. “Even if it took our dad away from us a bit, he made up for it with free buffet food.” The Old Mill’s heritage and its integrity will remain, vowed new owner De Luca, who was in attendance last Wednesday evening. De Luca stressed the change of ownership will be a “seamless transition” in a statement. Recalling his many years with the mill, Parsons said, “It’s been a rewarding and wonderful journey.”

W

e like the enthusiasm, goodwill and optimism Toronto’s Pan Am Games appear to have generated. But we must stress this is a time for prudence and caution as it relates to the Olympic Games and the city considering a bid. With the Pan Am Games portion of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games complete, what were once merely isolated whispers of a future Olympic bid for our city have grown noticeably louder – and in fairly fast fashion. As a concept, a Toronto Olympic bid is not an outrageous one. It really isn’t. Reviews of the Pan Am experience are largely positive. While there would be work needed to bring facilities up to Olympic standards, there’s been a good start made with the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games our view facilities. Also, the city’s ethnic cultural diversity make Objective review and Toronto an ideal showpiece of Pan Am Games for a global event. And as the Pan Am Games the first step have shown, these kinds of events can serve as an important catalyst for needed infrastructure improvements that serve the community at large well after the Games have left town. But... one thing at a time, people. First, let’s have a proper assessment of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games – which aren’t even over yet. This review should provide relevant, objective information that can help inform not only an Olympic bid decision, but also ongoing aspects of life in the city, particularly as it relates to traffic and transit. Also, Toronto has been down this Olympic bid route before. The two most recent bids being the one for the 1996 (which went to Atlanta) and 2008 (which went to Beijing) Games. The bids alone are a significant undertaking. It’s worth examining what happened in those instances. The post-Pan Am Games euphoria for Toronto is understandable. Indeed, it’s better than the alternative. But it will take more than euphoria to fuel a legitimate Olympic bid. The city must assess its needs and capabilities. So let’s rush to the finish line, not to the starting gate. We all need to take a deep breath, and understand just what something like this would entail before we decide it’s the right course of action.

column

There’s a showdown in Spadina-Fort York

I

t is going to be a hot time in Spadina-Fort York this summer and fall. Two of Toronto’s highest-profile progressive pols, Olivia Chow and Adam Vaughan, will be facing off in the newly minted riding. Vaughan, a former broadcast journalist and city councillor, is the incumbent of sorts; he has held the vanishing federal riding of TrinitySpadina for a year, winning it for the Liberals in a byelection necessitated by New Democrat Chow’s departure to run what turned out to be an unsuccessful mayoral bid. It wasn’t a great surprise when Vaughan took the byelection. Indeed, voters in the NDP-supporting riding could have been forgiven for not realizing they weren’t voting NDP again when they elected Vaughan. He had been a proper nemesis for the right on council –

david nickle the city then-mayor Rob Ford in particular – and a strong supporter of progressive causes. Several of his colleagues privately wondered why he hadn’t joined Thomas Mulcair’s team, given all that. But Vaughan threw in with the Liberals for a pragmatic reason: in the spring of 2014, Justin Trudeau seemed the best bet to replace Stephen Harper and the Conservatives in government. Things appear very different in 2015. It’s not trending well for the Liberals, and the fortunes of Mulcair’s New Democrats have risen considerably. If the trend in polls continues, Vaughan will have to rely principally on his own record

as a local representative - which is not inconsiderable, as he will also draw on his accomplishments as city councillor and profile as a media-savvy former journalist. Chow, conversely, will be riding an orange wave propelled further by the profile she built during the 2014 mayoral campaign. She didn’t win, and didn’t, in the end, even run a terribly effective campaign against Doug Ford’s bombast and John Tory’s reassurance. It was an honourable defeat. And there is that orange wave. In most elections, the NDP policy book shows up as a utopian document no one seriously thinks has a chance of being implemented. But this time, promises to fund child care and public housing and transit infrastructure carry the weight of possibility. It will be a hard fight, for that. A year ago, Vaughan

was a serious catch for Trudeau and the Liberals. On Tuesday, he made it clear that he still is. “Olivia Chow has never given me a free ride in this city and I’ve prevailed,” Vaughan told reporters. And that much is true. He took over Chow’s seat on council when she left for Ottawa by beating her preferred candidate. He defeated Chow’s chosen successor (and now city councillor) Joe Cressy a year ago. And the new riding concentrates Vaughan’s support, and contains polls where Chow did not do as well in her bid for mayor. What it boils down to is this: in 2015, it’s a good bet the new Member from Spadina-Fort York will be a member of the governing party. All other things being, in this case, nearly equal.

Theatre designer Chapman also did Princes’ Gates and Sunnyside bathing pavilion >>>from page 1 Monday evening. “It was a trendsetter,” Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette told her audience who had gathered at the Runnymede Library, July 27, prior to the unveiling. “It was designed by Alfred Chapman, who is responsible for the Princes’ Gates and the Sunnyside bathing pavilion, which is in our neighbour-

hood.” Its atmospheric ceiling made theatre-goers feel like they were watching a movie outside, Doucette said. The Famous Players theatre, which presented both Vaudeville performances and films, boasted as many as 1,400 seats and had one of the first atmospheric-style auditoriums in Canada. When interest in Vaudeville waned

in the 1930s, the Runnymede theatre showed movies only. On opening night in 1927, Runnymede theatre screened the film The Fire Brigade, starring May McAvoy and Charles Ray, said Mark Warrack, a former Heritage Toronto board member. The theatre became a bingo hall in 1972, before movies returned from 1980

until 1999 when it closed for retail, he said. For almost four decades, Heritage Toronto has been recognizing key people, places and events that have shaped the city through its plaques and markers program, which is sponsored by Scotiabank.

Bloor Collegiate grad named a TDSB top scholar LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bloor Collegiate Institute graduate Elias Hess-Childs was named one of the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) 2014-’15 top scholars, tied with three other students for achieving an average of 99.5 per cent. Hess-Childs said he had no idea he would be recognized

for such an achievement. He only found out about two weeks ago when he received a call from a board representative. “I was pretty excited. The recognition obviously means a lot, but I can’t forget that I went to school with a lot of extremely intelligent and diligent students, all of whom could easily have been in my place,” he said.

“It would have been awesome if some of them had been there as well, they definitely deserve it.” Hess-Childs said he is looking forward to living in a new city. He’s headed to Montreal’s McGill University for math and physics with a goal of becoming a professor when he’s older. “My father works at U of T and I’ve seen how much

devotion and good he does in his research and teaching. I think being an educator is as important as being a researcher,” Hess-Childs said. “There’s something awesome about helping educate the next generations of academics.” The Palmerston Village resident says he relied on his passion for knowledge

to achieve such success in school. Asked if he had any advice for younger students, Hess-Childs said he couldn’t have made it through high school without the help of Bloor Collegiate’s “wonderful staff.” “Teachers aren’t just wonderful sources of knowledge, they can also be friends,” he said. “I think talking to teachers

as a new student is a great way to become both a part of the school’s community, and a way to learn new and more in-depth material.” The TDSB’s 2009 to 2014 graduation rate is 84 per cent, an increase of one per cent from the previous fall 2008 to 2013 cohort.

Respite care for seniors

AUGUST

Caregiving support over the summer months With the last weeks of summer underway, many of us are gearing up for our last jaunts to the cottage, road trips and similar vacations. When the summer lasts for only a mere few months, it makes the need for a seasonal getaway even more important for so many. While the family heads out to the cottage or beyond, however, there are often questions about where elderly relatives will stay while the family is away. Many seniors are cared for by their adult children. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides respite care to caregivers who want the peace of mind knowing that their elderly loved ones are taken care of while the family is away. Depending on the family need, respite care can be arranged to provide temporary, substitute living arrangements or special care in the home for seniors. Respite care can provide a brief period of relief or rest (usually more than twenty four hours) for the family members, guardians or other people who are regular caregivers for seniors. There are also short-stay programs that are offered by some long-term care homes and retirement residences for seniors living in the community, who require care when recovering from an illness. Short-stay respite care for your elderly loved one can be provided to caregivers in the following circumstances: 1) The caregiver needs to be away for more than a day (example: vacation or work commitments). 2) The caregiver is hospitalized and needs someone to provide temporary care for their elderly loved one. 3) The caregiver requires 24-hour nursing care and/or assistance with daily living activities on a short-term basis. 4) For in-home respite care, services are coordinated by the CCAC and paid for by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. To find out more information about respite care for your loved one, contact the Toronto Cen-
