Auto shop teacher Randy Brown Musician Rob dies after battle with cancer Teehan releases his first CD Come Home Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton school community shocked by the loss of longtime teacher HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com It’s a sad day for those who knew and loved Randy Brown. The 59-year-old automotive and transportation technology teacher at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School died on June 2 with a friend by his side after his battle with gastrointestinal cancer. “It happened so fast,” said Josie Candito, a close friend of Randy. “He went into palliative care just days after the celebration we had for him. Who knows what kind of tremendous pain that man was in.” Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton staff and students gave the well-loved and respected teacher a schoolwide barbecue to celebrate his career and life late last month. Hundreds of students, past and present, colleagues, parents and community members stopped by to thank him for the difference he made in their lives and to wish him all the best. Brown was an automotive and transportation technology teacher at Bishop since 1999 and was known for his straight-shooter attitude, his compassion and the role he played as a father figure to many students.

Bishop Morocco/St. Thomas Catholic Secondary School held a celebration for auto shop teacher Randy Brown (centre) just last month. Here, principal Derek Chen, left, and former principal Maria Pereira posed for a photo.
“
It’s a true loss to our school and our community, but we have great memories of him… I think we are just so fortunate that he was part of our community, (that) he was able to contribute so much. – Derek Chen, principal, Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton
For school principal Derek Chen, the news of Brown’s death was “devastating.” “It’s very, very sad. We’ve all lost a friend and we all
feel that way in the school,” Chen said. “Although we knew it was coming, we were shocked at how fast it happened.” Chen said when the news broke, he told his staff first; students were notified yesterday morning. Grief counselors were on hand for students who needed it and a prayer was said for Brown. Chen said the reaction from students varied. “There were some students (who) were close to Randy that needed time by themselves and they were welcome to go to our chapel, where counselors were on hand to talk to them,” Chen said. “I had a couple of stu-
dents come into my office and share some really nice memories of Randy and all the incredible things he did for them.” As an educator, Chan said Brown was always championing for his students and doing the most he could for them in class and in life. “He trusted the students and his expectations for the students were very high, which we always want to have at the school,” Chen told The Villager. “By him putting so much faith in the students, it just speaks so highly of him as an educator.” In an interview with The Villager at his celebration last month, Brown said he was overwhelmed by the respect people have for him. “I’ve been so fortunate,” he said. Candito said she tried to visit him a few days ago, but heard he was too sick for visitors. “He’s incredible...just an incredible man. The last time I spoke to him, he was asking me to take care of this and that person,” she said. “He’s such a giving man. Even ’til the end, he was worrying about everybody else. That’s Randy...right down to his last breath.” Chen said it’s no question Brown will be greatly missed. “It’s a true loss to our school and our community, but we have great memories of him,” Chen said. “I think we are just so fortunate that he was part of our community, (that) he was able to contribute so much.”

Release party June 10 at Lula Lounge LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Rob Teehan very easily could have followed his identical twin brother into an engineering career; the siblings shared an affinity for math and sciences, however, he wanted to set himself apart from his counterpart. “I gravitated to art and creativity because I wanted to be different than my brother,” Teehan said. Since then, Teehan says he’s followed whatever “whim” that has come his way. Those whims have led to his latest work, his first-ever CD, Come Home, which he is debuting at a release party at Lula Lounge, Wednesday, June 10. Come Home, an instrumental album, boasts a “cinematic instrumental style,” said Teehan, a Bloor Street West and Dovercourt Roadarea resident, with classical, folk and jazz influences. “It has a film-centric feel to it,” said Teehan, who is about to embark on his latest adventure, a move to Los Angeles where he’ll pursue film composing. For the June 10 release party, Teehan has assembled a

mini orchestra, comprised of piano, violin, cello, accordion, guitar, bass and drums. Before delving into the world of composing, Teehan got his start playing tuba at the age of 14 in his school band, in his hometown of Oshawa. He went on to get a classical degree from the University of Toronto and has dabbled in most musical genres, playing the sousaphone, co-founding the New Orleans jazz-inspired band, ‘The Boxcar Boys,’ and the ‘Heavyweights Brass Band’ and joined the 16-piece “Balkan-Klezmer-GypsyParty-Punk-Super Band” the Lemon Bucket Orkestra, with whom he toured throughout Eastern Europe, and across Canada. He would compose classical scores during the day and play with bands at night. Now, Teehan is ready to step out as a composer with his CD release this month at Lula Lounge, 1585 Dundas St. W.

hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto The time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after they were given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.

Tory puts stamp on Toronto Board of Health
I
t’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board, and the city’s health department – to exclusively concern itself with the health and wellbeing of Torontonians. Part of this is because for many years, mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So it has been that when a medical officer of health has suggested that pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, the board members have obe-
david nickle the city diently and enthusiastically sent that information on to city council – where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought that mayors in the past would have done something about it. Well, maybe not David Miller who generally found himself in agreement with the pearl-clutchers at public health – but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized that this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 20142018 Toronto Board of
Health is shaping up to be a very different beast. How different? Let’s see. On Monday, the board had before it a report from Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on – what else? – the Gardiner Expressway debate. Mayor Tory as you may know favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, Dr. McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in suggesting that was a bad idea. In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam.
Cue the replacements this term, where a much smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata – along with a new crew of citizen appointees. It’s not a total political shift, but it was enough, along with a few of the board’s citizen appointees, to deep-six that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s Chief Medical Officer of Health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @DavidNickle

>>>from page 1 m e m b e r s we re a b l e t o corral him back. He flew the coop again Friday, May 29, and was on the lam in Roncesvalles, jumping rooftops and visiting residents’ backyards. Toronto Animal Services made multiple attempts to capture the bird with nets and blankets over the weekend, but stopped out of fear they were agitating him and driving him further away. According to Kovachis, parks staff set up feeding stations around the park and used peahen sounds to lure the colourful bird home voluntarily. It’s unclear whether it was his stomach or his heart which led him back in the end. Ward 13 city Councillor
“
We don’t clip the wings, so maybe this guy will have to go into the aviary for a while to remind him that he should stay close to home. – Councillor Sarah Doucette
Sarah Doucette had been keeping close tabs on the colourful bird who took a temporary vacation from the four other male peacocks and eight peahens currently residing at High Park Zoo. Doucette said peacocks have flown out of their pens before, but usually just sit in the trees around the zoo and come back. “This guy got a bit more adventurous,”
she said. The peacocks were previously kept in the aviary, which has a roof, but have been out in pens since last year. “We don’t clip the wings, so maybe this guy will have to go into the aviary for a while to remind him that he should stay close to home,” she said. “It’s also mating season, so he will likely ‘be busy’.” Last week, Doucette joked there should be a Twitter account for the bird and was told by a reporter there already was one. Two-way traffic is returning to the Queen’s Quay as the revamped roadway gets ready to re-open. Starting this week new traffic signals will operate at several intersections along Queen’s Quay between Bay Street to west of Lower Spadina Avenue which will allow for the return of two-way traffic to the street. The road, which was once referred to as one of North America’s ugliest, has been under construction since 2013 and has undergone a topto-bottom facelift, including widened sidewalks, relocated streetcar lanes and a new red granite pedestrian promenade. The transitions are expected to take until Wednesday, June 10 to complete and will also include new transit signals for the 509 Harbourfront service. UNVEILS its NEW LAKESHORE TRAINS wGO
GO Transit unveiled its newlook train cars in Mimico this week which will help boost service on the Lakeshore West
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT line. Over the next two years 127 new cars are expected to join GO’s fleet with improvements scheduled to begin this summer. Part of the plan to increase service is building a new storage facility for the trains in south Etobicoke which, according to the Ministry of Transportation, will provide enough space for six, 12-car trains. TICKET SALES OFFERED FOR UP ride wONLINE
The Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link is about to launch and before the inaugural trip Saturday, June 6 you can purchase a ticket online. According to Metrolinx, tickets purchased online can be redeemed for up to a year from the date they were bought. You can also buy tickets at station vending machines or if you prefer human contact,
from service counters located at Union Station and Toronto Pearson Airport. It costs $19 for a one-way trip on the four-stop route between Union and Pearson if you have a Presto Card. DRIVER FINES, POINTS go up wDISTRACTED
Higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers are part of new road safety legislation passed this week by the Ontario Legislature. The new regulations are a hold-over from the previous term. They include upping distracted driving fines to a minimum of $300 as well as three demerit points. Also for the first time, drivers who open their car doors in the path of an unsuspecting cyclist, also known as “dooring”, will face demerit points in addition to higher fines. The new restrictions are expected to be in place before the end of 2015. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Find him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

West-end cyclists to pedal towards a cancer cure
You’re Invited We want to show our thanks to the Bloor community!
Bloor West’s Matthew Madigan and Etobicoke’s Mark Teplycky cycle in Ride to Conquer Cancer
On June 6, Metrolinx celebrates the launch of Union Pearson Express— the dedicated air-rail link that speeds travellers from Union Station downtown to Toronto Pearson, stopping at Bloor and Weston stations on the way. It’s a reliable 25 minute ride, with trains leaving every 15 minutes, 19 and a half hours per day. Progress isn’t easy sometimes, and we know that the Bloor community has
LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com Armoured with bike helmets, thousands of road warriors are gearing up for an epic twoday fight against cancer. Cyclists, survivors and supporters will come together for the eighth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14. Funds raised from the 2 0 0 - k i l o m e t re j o u r n e y between Toronto and Niagara will benefit the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Over the last seven years, the Ontario ride has raised more than $119-million for cancer research across the province, and has become the largest cycling event in Canadian history. According to Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) statistics, two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with the cancer in their lifetime. Local participants are ready to put their physical and emotional strength towards finding a cure. Etobicoke automotive salesman Mark Teplycky will be shifting focus from four wheels to two as he embarks on his fifth ride. “It’s as much about the personal challenge as it is the fundraising,” he said. He hopes to bump up the $16,000 he’s raised over the last four years to $20,000. Teplycky lost his 79-yearold grandmother, Jenny, to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2005. He said he wishes she had access to some of the customizable treatments available now, thanks to recent breakthroughs. “People 10 years ago, who may have had a terminal out-
had to put up with our dust, our noise and inconveniences along the way. So, on June 14, we want to thank you personally by offering a free ride on UP Express from 11 am to 3 pm. Please come down and see what we’ve built. There will be a BBQ, giveaways and lots of fun things to do for the whole family. We’re working hard to build a city for the future, but we couldn’t have done it without you.
WHEN: 11 am to 3 pm, June 14 WHERE: The Bloor GO/UP Station Rail Path off Randolph Avenue Bloor West’s Matthew Madigan raises his bike in pride after completing the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer for the first time in 2014.
look on their disease, would have a fighting chance now,” Teplycky said. Pe r s o n a l i ze d Ca n c e r Medicine is this year’s research focus. “Treating two people with the same type of cancer in the same way will not necessarily yield the best results,” said Steve Merker, vice president of business development and chief cycling officer at the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, in an email. “We are committed to a future of individualized treatments.” Funds will go towards personalized genetic testing, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and adoptive T-cell therapy. Though many ride participants will be cycling in honour of loved ones they have lost in the past, Bloor West resident Matthew Madigan will be riding for the future. Madigan, participating for the second time, said his four-year-old daughter, Kate, has completely changed his perspective. He feels a
responsibility to help her generation. “The fact that I can make her tomorrow better than today is very invigorating,” Madigan said. “When you go through this event, you’re compelled by individual stories, and hear how close we may be,” he said. “I’m certain, in my lifetime, we’ll see a cure, and that will benefit her lifetime.” Madigan will be riding as part of the 34-member Bloor West Village Idiots team. There is nothing idiotic about the $500,000 the community team has raised over the past eight years. Both Teplycky and Madigan have teammates and family members struggling with cancer. It’s not surprising since 520 Canadians are diagnosed every day, according to CCS statistics. “Princess Margaret is one of the top cancer research hospitals in the world. The fact that we have that in Toronto, and can directly support them, is a great thing for Canadians,” Madigan said.

Mueller lived his life helping others, says longtime friend >>>from page 1 delivered her husband’s eulogy at his funeral attended by approximately 200 mourners. “William is a bright, social boy. He loves Batman, and the outdoors. He’s very considerate, kind, charming,” Pavlov said. “William is always smiling. Even in these circumstances, he’s still thriving.” David Clement, Pavlov and Mueller’s friend, created the ‘In Memory of Craig Mueller’ Indiegogo page to raise $10,000 for William’s future post-secondary education. To date, it has raised $2,840. “Craig was always positive, looking for selfless ways to continue to help make whatever the situation was better. He was always so caring and helpful to others,” Clement said. -But the Indiegogo campaign is about more than the funds.

Craig Mueller, pictured here with his young son William.
Pavlov said he plans to print online messages of support and condolence to create a scrapbook for William “so he knows who his Dad was,” he said. Mueller’s kindness and generosity were among his defining traits, Pavlov said. It was that personality that drew approximately 2,000 people to pay their respects at his viewing, his friend said.
That generosity extended beyond Mueller’s life. His family donated his organs. His lungs and a kidney went to people in need of transplants. Pavlov knows well the intersection where his friend was struck. He said he was hit by a vehicle crossing the same intersection five years ago. He sustained a broken leg. His German Shepherd broke a hip. “You can’t remind people enough to be cautious crossing the road. It doesn’t matter what the signal says or what time of day it is.” Mueller leaves his wife, Denise, son, William, parents, Willi and Rosemarie, siblings Maureen, Fiona, Michelle and Paul, and his 12 nieces and nephews.
