The developers of a proposed condominium on Bloor Street West at Durie Street are taking

their plan to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), much to the dismay of Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette who recently shared the news through social media.

“To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I have heard overwhelmingly that residents share my concerns over the size and density of this building,” she said in a

Insuring your life helps protect their future.

In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup, the Davenport Arts Community is inviting everyone in the city to celebrate by participating in a public paint day. Everyone is encouraged to participate, Saturday, June 7, in the creation of a World Cup mural that promises to be one of the largest in the world. And thanks to its prime location in the underpass at St. Clair Avenue West and Caledonia Road, it could potentially be viewed by more than 20,000 people every day. “It only happens every four years and the time has almost come for the excitement of the World Cup,” said muralist Marcelo Pinero, creative director at Davenport Arts Community (DAC), via social media. “We will show the world Toronto’s passion for multiculturalism and sportsmanship with a fantastic piece of public art, for the people and by the people.” >>>MURAL, page 6

Shelter a glowing The TSA pops up Seurat push pin art installation operatic review by Junction composer LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Fear of nuclear energy sparks imagination LISA RAINFORD It’s no stretch that Junctionbased composer Juliet Palmer would write a chamber opera that explores the birth of nuclear energy and delves into its explosive consequences. The New Zealand native said the Cold War hovered over her childhood, “threatening imminent catastrophe and planetary doom.” Living in the island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean presented a safety risk, she said, as the French, English and American governments conducted tests in the ocean. “This was brought home in 1985 when I heard the explosive boom as the French government bombed the Greenpeace vessel, The Rainbow Warrior, in Auckland harbour,” she told The Villager. Palmer met her Canadian husband in grad school, and re-located to Toronto. Canada boasts a “strikingly different atomic history,” than New Zealand, she said. “The lights in my house are powered by nuclear power and my neighbourhood hosts a uranium fuel pellet processing plant,” she said. “At night, I lie in bed listening to the haunting sound of train whistles and wonder if another shipment of uranium has arrived from the west.”

lels the story of nuclear physicist Lise Meitner, one of the people vital to the discovery of nuclear energy. Palmer and Salverson’s desire was to tell a story without scaring people away because of a heavy subject. Several years in the making, the writing of Shelter began in 2005, but it would not premiere until 2012. It boasts the musical influences of Brahms, big band, funk and the post-apocalyptic sounds of 1990s Japanese punk. high school ambition Juliet Palmer

Palmer’s and playwright Julie Salverson’s chamber opera Shelter makes its Toronto debut at the Berkeley Street Theatre starting Thursday, June 12. Presented by Tapestry, i n c o - p ro d u c t i o n w i t h Edmonton Opera, Shelter is the story of a family struggling to be ordinary in the atomic age. Audiences are privy to couple Thomas and Claire’s plight to keep their “glowing” daughter safe by keeping her hidden. At 21, Hope emerges only to discover a mysterious man at her door with a destiny to fill. “She literally glows in the dark,” Palmer said. “She’s a little bit dangerous.” The family’s struggle paral-

When growing up, Palmer planned on being an architect. A pianist and clarinetist, it wasn’t until high school, when a teacher encouraged her to audition for a post-secondary performance program, did she think about pursuing music as a career. Palmer’s work has been featured around the world with performances at New Yo rk’s L i n c o l n Ce n t e r, L o n d o n’s S o u t h b a n k Centre, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Bath International Festival, Voix Nouvelles France and Italy’s Angelica Festival, among others. Shelter performances take place at the Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs, 25 Berkeley St. Visit tapestryopera. com

Art can be a little intimidating – not unlike the thought of getting on stage to sing karaoke for some people. That’s according to Thomas Hendry, the Figure Drawing professor at the Toronto School of Art (TSA). Hendry was at the helm of a pop-up art class during the unveiling of a giant art installation that recreated impressionist artist George Seurat’s painting, ‘Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,’ at the Metrocentre King Street Tower, Tuesday, May 27. The virtual replica was created using only push pins – as many as 58,000. As part of the unveiling event, Hendry offered the pop-up art class for business professionals, art enthusiasts and passersby. The aim of the class and installation, which will be exhibited at the Metrocentre King Street Tower until tomorrow, was to ignite or re-ignite people’s passion for the arts. Hendry called the setting a “fusion of the creative and nine-to-five” traditional work day. “It was nice to bring a traditional drawing environment into the Metrocentre lobby,” he said. The mini-art class saw a live model, easels and sketch pads and served to introduce passersby to the basic skills of life drawing. About 100 people took part and attended the unveiling. “You don’t usually get to see people making things,” Hendry said. “We worked through some of the strategies of creating a sketch – right in the middle of the Metrocentre lobby.”

There were two to three dozen people at easels, said Hendry, who has been teaching at TSA since the mid1990s, long before its rebirth and relocation from downtown to the Bloor-Dufferin corner. The 10 foot by six foot 150-pound plus painting had people gasping at its painstaking detail and enormity, according to Andrew Simon, chief creative officer at Cundari, TSA’s communications partner. “One person said, ‘That is unbelievable’ and stared at it for more than five minutes,” Simon told The Villager. “He couldn’t fathom how someone would have the patience. It’s a beautiful piece of art.” “He loved the concept,” Simon said . The setting and concept of the piece was born out of conversations Simon and his team had with TSA’s instruc-

tors and administration. The consensus was that business people in the Greater Toronto Area were who Simon would target because of the nature of the school, its continuing education programs. The TSA attracts – among many others – business professionals who want to re-awaken their artistic side, he said. Simon, alongside Mike Sipley and Cory Eisentraut, came up with the idea to create art using ordinary workplace supplies. “We loved the idea of taking a flat painting and bringing dimension to it,” he said. “George Seurat’s ‘pointillism’ would lend itself well to (the push pins).” The piece will remain at Metrocentre King Street Tower until tomorrow before it is relocated.

his Friday, June 6, marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Canadian soldiers and Allied forces led a successful invasion of France off the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. It’s an event that’s earned a honourable place in our history books and put us forever in the debt of the brave soldiers who risked their lives for such a critical mission, that would ultimately turn the tide and end the war. Canada’s role was a major one but it did not go without sacrifice, as Canadians our view suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including 359 killed. As we honour and rememFamilies of ber those who served – sadly, a soliders need lifetime ago for most of those – let’s extend our comour support soldiers memoration on this special day to also consider other impacts of military service. For instance, take time to think of the families who did, and continue to, watch their loved ones head off to war. At city hall tomorrow, a special event is taking place to mark the anniversary of D-Day and one of the speakers is Joanne O’Halloran, whose father Edward served during the Second World War and was at the Normandy invasion. She’ll be sharing her experience as a soldier’s child. It’s a perspective we don’t hear often, but one that needs to be heard, as well as that of partners, mothers and fathers. Soldiers and veterans need our support, but their families do too. Something else that should be incorporated into the tradition of military commemoration, is increasing support for the mental health needs of soldiers when they return home. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a relatively new term, but it’s not a new illness and its designation comes too late for generations of soldiers and families who suffered without help. We have a responsibility to look after the people who fight for us, so let’s support them wholly during their time of duty and after as well.

Ford’s rehab working wonders for voters

I

t was not so very long ago that Mayor Rob Ford longed to be anywhere but in the bosom of his constituents – at least when it came to the observation of Canada Day July 1. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, our mayor would make a bee-line for his family’s cottage rather than wave a flag in Toronto and coincidentally march in the Pride parade. Not so in 2014. In an interview from the facility where he is undergoing therapy for alcohol addiction, Mayor Ford declared this week he’ll be back in Toronto for July 1. At that point, he’ll attend Canada Day celebrations and take his re-election campaign out of the holding pattern it’s been in since April 30. He told The Toronto Sun he’s a changed man, and is ready to make some amends for all the wrong he’s done us.

david nickle the city And of course he wants to run for another term as mayor of the biggest city in Canada. When that happens, I suppose we’ll all have to contend with him. In the meantime, Toronto has another month, nearly, to appreciate our own bout of rehab. Think about it: for just over a month, we’ve been able to spend most of our time doing what people ought to during an election: considering what sort of city we’d like to be in, and worrying over the management of the one we’ve got. In the mayoral race, John Tory has finally come forward with his transit plan, and while it’s got its problems, at least it’s not a man screaming “subways” over and over again. Even when the talk’s

gotten rough, it’s been measured and thoughtful and respectful. That’s been the case in matters of governance, too. Aside from a bad evening when Doug Ford and a group of his constituents urged a house looking after autistic youth to pack up and leave, talk’s been civil. We’re having a provincial election without, so far, a single parade led by Rob and Doug Ford. It is almost peaceful in Toronto. And it may well stay that way. When Rob Ford returns to his titular post as mayor, there will be just two more council meetings before the municipal election campaign starts in earnest. The serious campaigns – which is to say, the ones that didn’t take a break to dry out in cottage country – will be organized, and funded, and by summer’s end consolidating their presence and support, their

platforms mostly unveiled. The electorate, having been schooled in such for the past few months, will be ready for a serious civic talk. Which is to say, going into the election, we should be in good shape: rehab, if not for our mayor then at least for our damaged city politick, having worked its wonders. CF fundraiser now benefits from the support of others

3 DAYS ONLY

More than $30K raised for Bauer in online campaign

Friday, June 6th, Saturday, June 7th & Sunday, June 8th Complete Patio Package

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Ironically, Erick Bauer is now the one in need of support. The Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue-area resident has for the past nine years, alongside his wife Stefanie Cali and his friend Steve Cameron, been raising funds and awareness for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the oncology unit at the Hospital for Sick Children through their nonprofit charitable organization Friends for Life Foundation (FFLF). Since its inception in 2005, FFLF has raised more than $500,000. Bauer was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at the age of five. The Villager profiled him in the May 22 edition. It has been a particularly challenging year for Bauer and his wife. “I have always been a believer in the notion that kindness is reciprocal and that good deeds come back to you in this life,” Bauer said. “People have asked me why I choose to spend so much time, effort and energy trying to help others. My answer has always been, if I were the one in that situation who needed support, it would mean the world to me to know that I had people I could rely on to help me through my fight.” Bauer is a firm believer in karma and is now seeing it in action. He had just returned to work after a five-month long sick leave and had been enjoying his role at a new job before succumbing to the latest lung infection. He has been at St. Michael’s hospital for three weeks and was just transfered to Toronto General Hospital. “It’s been one hell of an admission,” he told The Villager. “It started with a bad lung infection, but since I’ve had heart, kidney, liver and colon issues as well.”

Friends for Life Foundation founder Erick Bauer, shown with his wife Stefanie Cali, is currently in hospital with a lung infection. The illness is a complication of cystic fibrosis, a condition he’s lived with since the age of five.

“As it turned out there were several issues that required surgery,” he told The Villager via email while still at St. Mike’s. “Unfortunately, the most recent update is that more surgery is needed and I will likely be once again going under in the next day or two to have some procedures done that will repair my damaged lungs.” Bauer is facing weeks of recovery time at home after he is discharged. “The generosity I have received during my time of need has been completely overwhelming. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful group of people behind me. It really does make me want to fight even harder,” he said. On the first day he was admitted to hospital, Bauer decided to set up a Facebook page to keep friends and family in the loop about his health trials. Since setting it up more than two weeks ago, the page has reached more 25,000 people. Bauer has received messages from old friends, colleagues, fellow “CFers” and even strangers. “It has been a huge source of inspiration for me. It’s also a great form of therapy to be able to get my thoughts and feelings out. The support I

have received through the page has been tremendous,” he said. After reading an article in Forbes Magazine recently about crowd funding, Bauer set up a Gofundme.com page. The response, said Bauer, has been “absolutely unbelievable.” In less than 48 hours, he received more than $25,000 in personal donations from friends, family members, colleagues, members of the CF community and complete strangers. As of this week, the total had reached $31,740. It’s unlikely Bauer will be able to return to work immediately after he returns home from the hospital. “The money that I have received is an absolute blessing as it has helped Stefanie and I to offset the salary that I’ll be forced to go without for at least a few months,” he said. “It will go a long way to help cover a number of expenses, including costs associated with my hospitalization and medical expenses that are not covered by our insurance plan.” Bauer’s facebook page is called Surviving Cystic Fibrosis. Clean Trains Now

The unelected, unaccountable OMB can’t be permitted to ignore our views. We need to free Toronto from the OMB to ensure our community’s voices are heard in the development process.

Dirty diesel trains put our health at risk. We need to ensure clean electric trains are used on the Air Rail Link. We’ll also invest in transit, such as the Downtown Relief Line, and expand cycling infrastructure.

Councillor to ask city staff to attend OMB hearing >>>from page 1 not waiting to hear the city planning report, your views, or the ruling of city council.” Property owner Harrington Developments Ltd. is proposing to demolish the existing buildings at 2265 to 2279 Bloor St. W. and a residential rental home at 240 Durie St. to make room for an eightstorey plus mezzanine con-

dominium. Comprised of 83 units, the proposed development would see the Ukrainian Credit Union, the ‘Sushi & Thai’ restaurant and the first residential house on Durie Street south of Bloor Street torn down to make way for the condo. Of the proposed 83 residential units, 19 would be replacement rental units. The building would also

include 1,200 square metres of office and retail space. The four levels of underground parking would include 124 spaces, accessible from Durie Street. Harrington Developments Ltd. has decided to bypass the city process by going straight to the province 120 days after submitting its application. “I am not surprised,” Doucette told The Villager.

“They want to remove the first house south of Bloor Street (on Durie Street). That would change residential to commercial forever.” The other issue, said Doucette, is how does the city prepare for the added infrastructure if it doesn’t know what is going to built. That’s why the city needs to get out from under the thumb of the OMB.

Harrington Developments Ltd. did not respond to The Villager’s request for comment. City planner Philip Carvalino will now be writing a report to recommend that the city send representatives to oppose the proposal at the OMB. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts with Carvalino and Doucette’s office. Doucette said she will

be filing a motion to send city legal and planning to the OMB. While “highly unlikely,” should a pre-hearing take place while council is on an election hiatus between September and December, the city solicitor will represent the city at the OMB. To stay informed, visit www.ward13.ca or contact the councillor at councillor_doucette@toronto.ca

Resident questions Rennie Park improvements, lack of notification City staff say consultations with residents took place in 2013 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Just months after the closure of a controversial off-leash dog area in Rennie Park, Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department has undertaken a landscaping project that one resident says has taken the neighbourhood by surprise. “It looks very pretty, but there was no public or local consultation, nor even a letter

notifying residents about the changes being implemented to this part of Rennie Park,” said Tracey Capes, a 20-year Swansea resident. “This landscaping project was decided and executed in under threeand-a-half months.” A parks department spokesperson said the planting project was undertaken because Rennie Park is part of a provincially designated ecologically sensitive area. “The area has been planted

with native trees and shrubs that will help restore the ecosystem,” Nancy MacSween said. “The caliper trees will provide shade for students and park users. The area will be fenced in to protect the planting.” However, Capes, wants to know why residents were left out of the decision-making process. According to MacSween, discussions around the planting in Rennie Park began in December 2012 and several consultations took place among parks and forestry staff, the local councillor and residents in early 2013.

Planting was completed in May this year. Capes said she also wonders why a company from Guelph was hired to complete the project rather than a Toronto-based one. MacSween said it was in part because Bartram Woodlands specializes in ecological restoration, “a significant qualification” given Rennie Park’s ecologically sensitive designation. In February, the Parks, Forestry and Recreation department officially ruled the off-leash area would remain closed. Leading up to the closure, as many as 500

residents signed a petition with only a couple of weeks’ notice to try to save the dog park, but to no avail. Capes said she is not only frustrated that the community lost its dog park and that it will likely never be re-established, but also “appalled” by the process that was taken with the planting project. “There are a number of people in the community who are upset with the way this has been handled,” she told The Villager.

would like to see the outdoor lights in the park turned back on. However, it’s not as simple as flipping a switch, said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette. They need all new wires and fixtures and the city hasn’t had the money for several years. Doucette said she has found the money. “It is a priority,” she said. “These things take time.” The councillor said the lights will be ready to go on next year. Have an opinion on this story? The first person to respond correctly wins. averts strike of GO bus operators wDeal

A last-minute deal between Metrolinx and the union representing GO bus operators averted a strike which would have affected some 65,000 commuters. The deal was reached 2:30 a.m. Monday, June 2 - two hours after the union had imposed a deadline to walk off the job. Had an agreement not been reached, all GO buses would

Phillips named new chair of CivicAction To r o n t o C i v i c A c t i o n announced this week it has appointed former Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) Corporation president Rod Phillips as its new chair. In addition to his posting at OLG, which ended once Premier Kathleen Wynne took office, Phillips has held several corporate board positions and was once former Toronto mayor Mel Lastman’s chief of staff. Phillips officially takes over for John Tory who left the organization back in February to run for mayor. This is the second major position change for CivicAction, which has made one of its mandates to push for better transit funding for the GTHA. Sammy the Commuter Sardine took to the transit system Tuesday to call for better transit funding ahead of the Ontario Election Leader’s Debate. The frustrated fish undertook its own campaign ahead of the debate, scheduled for Tuesday night, calling on all of the major parties to deliver better transit funding. “Since the Ontario election was called, Sammy has been taking to streets, transit systems and roads of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) to symbolize the frustration and congestion residents face each day,” said the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, which organized the campaign, in a statement.

OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED IN 1996, the Parkdale-High Park riding has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1999. There are more than 107,000 residents in the district, according to 2013 City of Toronto statistics. Parkdale-High Park encompasses seven neighbourhoods surrounding High Park, including Swansea, Parkdale, the south half of the Junction, Runnymede-Bloor West Village, Lambton Baby Point and Roncesvalles Village. NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo is the incumbent. In addition to the NDP, PC, Liberal and Green candidates below, Libertarian Party candidate Redmond Weissenberger is also running.

NDP

CANDIDATES

1

Tell us about one local issue that you plan to champion as MPP.

2

What will you do to improve transit for your constituents?

3

Tell us about your background and qualifications.

4

What’s your opinion on the need for the Ontario Municipal Board?

■ I will continue to fight for more funding for our schools. Our children don’t learn well in overcrowded classrooms and in portables. Together with the parent councils, I successfully got funding released for Keele St. P.S. and Swansea P.S. We need that for all our schools. I have fought to keep swimming pools open in our schools. Many of our schools are very old and we need more money for the maintenance of our school buildings.

■ Electrification of the Union Pearson ARL is a priority. Working together with the community, I was successful in getting an Environmental Assessment. I will continue to push for electrification now, not later. We do not want dirty diesel running through our neighbourhoods. I continue to advocate for more investment in transit. We need a downtown relief line immediately and funds from a modest corporate tax increase dedicated to transit.

■ I am a United Church minister and a former small business owner. I have had the honour of representing Parkdale–High Park for the last eight years. At Queen’s Park, I have tabled the most number of bills with tri-party support. I was successful in getting Toby’s Law passed, amending the Ontario Human Rights Code for the first time in 25 years. I have been voted Best MPP and served as Deputy Speaker of the Legislature.

■ Seven years ago, I tabled a motion to free Toronto from the OMB. The OMB is an unelected and unaccountable board that has the power to override local community consultations and the City of Toronto Planning. The Liberal government has promised for years to reform the OMB but instead teamed with the Conservatives and killed NDP Bill 20 at Committee. Our treasures like High Park face serious threat if we don’t control development around it.

■ Gridlock. As our city continues to grow, so does the problem of gridlock. It’s not just people commuting in from Richmond Hill or Mississauga who endure endless traffic jams – getting around Toronto is becoming much more difficult for people who live and work in the city. I am passionate about helping resolve Toronto’s transit challenges and the PC Party is the only party with a plan to improve transit in the GTA without raising your taxes.

■ The Million Jobs Plan will create 96,000 jobs just by seizing the wheel and getting the GTA moving with better transit. Our transportation plan will put the province in charge of all rail-based transit and major highways in the GTA. It includes building the east-west express line connecting downtown with Etobicoke in the west and Scarborough in the east. That will give our subways some breathing room. And we won’t have to raise taxes to achieve this.

■ As a small business owner and experienced community advocate, I am running for MPP to get Queen’s Park focused on creating job opportunities for young Ontarians and to get transit built. With a decade of experience advising senior political leaders in Canada and running my own strategic communications business, I want to take my involvement to the next level as your MPP and be on the front lines of bringing generational change to Queen’s Park.

■ I believe that the OMB is an excellent tool for balancing the concerns of individual citizens, developers, and cities. But it is important for cities to be able to decide for themselves where their future growth will go. The intensification demands of provincial planning policy should not override local decision-making.

■ When I was door knocking recently in the heart of Parkdale, I met multiple immigrant families with small children. They told me they want their kids to finish high school and go on to university. As a Liberal, I get that. We need to find a way to give them more help, and we’re going to work on that when I’m the MPP.

■ We have five subway stations in the riding, but only two are accessible. The seniors at the Loyola Arrupe Centre are across the street from Keele Station, but many have difficulty accessing it. We need to make that a priority. The recent budget that the NDP refused to support had new funding for transit infrastructure – as our MPP I’ll work to bring that funding here to improve accessibility for our residents.

■ I’m a policy advisor, community activist, governance consultant and lawyer who has lived in Parkdale-High Park for more than 10 years. I’m active in the community as a board member of the Parkdale Community Food Bank and Swansea’s South Kingsway Neighbourhood Committee, and I’ve used my blog Impolitical, which has received over 1.1 million page views since 2005, to advocate for progressive public policy issues.

■ Responsible development in ParkdaleHigh Park concerns many residents, including myself. I was involved with the South Kingsway Neighbourhood Committee to oppose the size and scale of the proposed development at 34-50 Southport Street. I believe citizens should have an appeal body from municipal decisions. That body – whether it is the OMB or a new city-initiated local entity – must be neutral, accessible to citizens and must guarantee a fair hearing for residents and appellants.

■ Developing a stronger small business sector. Small businesses create more jobs than big business, return dignity and control to people, keep money in our community, foster innovation and are more resilient during hard economic times. The other political parties focus on tax cuts and bailouts for big corporations. To do this I will push for rolling back the corporate tax cuts for large businesses and increasing the Employer Health Tax exemption for small businesses with payrolls of less than $5 million.

■ The average daily commute time in the GTA is 80 minutes. Gridlock now costs our economy $6 billion a year in lost productivity. And that doesn’t include the cost of greenhouse gas pollution, which threatens our entire world. To solve transit we need a dedicated transit fund. This fund will be used to build subways, light rail, bicycle paths, etc. As MPP I will work with all parties to implement dedicated revenue tools such as congestion charges, gas taxes and parking fees, to raise the required money to build transit in Toronto.

■ I am currently a small business start-up coach (www.rudkins.ca) who has owned and ran his own businesses for 30 years (Consulting Firms, Resort) and worked in the field of economic development throughout the world. In Canada/Europe I have been a professor/trainer of entrepreneurship and project management in various colleges and universities. I have been the executive director of Green Enterprise Ontario and volunteer as a mentor to new immigrants. My formal education is in business/economics (BA, MBA,) and Green Building technologies.

■ The OMB is broken and it should either be overhauled or scrapped. It is currently a tool of the developers, allowing them to run the planning process in Ontario. In cases where residents or communities try to fight for better decisions, they are often hit with lawsuits to silence them. Planning should be returned to the communities and people of Ontario and should be supported by a strong, professional, planning body at the provincial and municipal levels.

Cutting Cravings and Nighttime Eating ….Naturally! As a nutritionist who has practiced in the weight loss world for over a decade, I have seen so many clients make the classic weight loss error - they start their day off well only not to finish it off as well. In other words, they eat a healthy breakfast and a balanced lunch, yet – the wheels tend to fall off the nutritional wagon at 3pm and on and food cravings/ sugar binges occur. What I can tell you for sure is that for weight loss purposes, you must finish your day off as well as you start it. However, if you do crave sweets in the afternoon or after dinner, trust me, this is not a sign that you are weak. Intense cravings are often a sign that your are “biochemically

off” and are bouncing around your blood sugars (i.e. from eating too many refined flours or sugars). It is also human nature that when stressed, tired, bored, emotional – we crave sweet! In order to break the cycle of sweet cravings and feel more in control, simply follow the tips below;

 Stay hydrated by drinking

water with lemon and/or sweet herbal teas to satisfy your craving.

 Opt for 2 chocolaty Skinny-

chews. Skinnychews are decadent chews that are naturally sweetened, low in calories and contain 2 grams of inulin

fiber per chew. Long lasting in your mouth and perfect for hunger and cravings (www.drjoey.com)!

 Do not go hungry. Make

sure to have a protein at meals to fill you up. I recommend eating a hard-boiled egg, 2-3 slices of turkey or chicken, ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt or a water based protein smoothie helps tremendously.

 Keep cut up watermelon in

your fridge as a low calorie way to cut cravings naturally.

 Avoid foods that are high

on the glycemic index such as refined flours and sugars

(cookies, crackers, bagels etc.). These foods will bounce around blood sugar and will heighten cravings.

 When a craving hits, distract

yourself for 10-15 min. by cleaning the house, filing those papers, playing ball with your kids, walking your pet, or running a fun errand with your spouse. The craving will soon pass!

 Get Your ZZZ’s. Sleep depri-

vation and fatigue often lead to sugar and carbohydrate cravings.

By following the tips above, you will soon be able to avoid

eating “off” in the afternoon and evening thereby helping you lose weight, boost energy and feel your very best….naturally. Courtesy of www.drjoey.com

Parkdale-High Park candidates debate the issues outdoors ERIN HATFIELD contactus@insidetoronto.com Although it was a pleasant spring evening, it wasn’t the weather that led the Roncesvalles-Macdonell Residents’ Association (RMRA) to host its recent Parkdale-High Park provincial all-candidates debate outdoors. After years of hosting its meetings and debates at Fern Avenue Public School in Roncesvalles Village, RMRA Chair Brian Torry said it was brought to his attention the building is not fully accessible. The decision was made to host the debate in the schoolyard, with about 130 residents gathering around an elevated doorway where the candidates from the four major parties addressed them. The move outdoors, in part, led to the debate being opened with a question from the RMRA executive about the state of this school and others in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). “What will you do to address the backlog of repairs at schools and to make sure that all public buildings are accessible,” Torry asked the candidates.

Photo/ERIN HATFIELD

The four main candidates vying for the provincial riding of Parkdale-High Park including the PC Party’s Jamie Ellerton, speaking at the microphone, Liberal Nancy Leblanc, the Green Party’s Tim Rudkins and incumbent NDP candidate Cheri DiNovo face a crowd of constituents at Fern Avenue school.

Tim Rudkins from the Green party said first, schools need to be fixed and second, the province needs to look at where the money comes from to fix them. He said between allowing the TDSB to leverage economic development charges and by merging the TDSB and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), they could access billions of dollars for repairs. Jamie Ellerton, the candidate

for the PC, said he and his party are committed to adhering to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) to make all public buildings accessible by 2025. He also said as MPP, he would work to make sure Parkdale-High Park, where schools are growing in size, gets its fair share of the education budget. Incumbent MPP and NDP candidate Cheri DiNovo said the province

is not on track to meet AOAD by 2025, and Fern Avenue Public School is an example of that. She added she is not running her campaign on promises, but instead on her track record, which includes saving school pools from closure. She said she would continue to fight for funding for schools in the area. Nancy Leblanc, the Liberal candidate, said the state of area schools is something she has been hearing about at the doors of constituents. The good news, she said, is the Liberals have provided funding for schools, but as MPP she would push the government to work with the TDSB to make sure funding gets to the ground level. “I pride myself on being an honest, straight-forward person,” Leblanc said. “I am upfront with people when they ask me a question. I sometimes don’t give them the best response because I am being honest.” She went on to say she would do her best to maintain that quality. In terms of her goals for the riding, Leblanc said she is interested in education and putting in place a program in schools in Parkdale to ensure young people can finish high school.

DiNovo said she would continue to make electric trains along the rail line that runs through the riding a top priority. “Without clean trains, everything else is moot,” DiNovo said. “Without clean air to breath, without our children’s health, without schools that can let our children out into the playgrounds...this will not be the Roncesvalles-Macdonell that we know.” Ellerton answered the question by speaking to how in his youth, Toronto was seen as a land of promise and how that isn’t the case today. “For the two hours we are here today, our debt is going up $3 million in Ontario,” Ellerton said. “Ontario doesn’t have a revenue problem; Ontario has a spending problem and my No. 1 priority as your MPP at Queen’s Park will be to have Ontario live within its means.” Rudkins said he is running because it is his opportunity to tell the powers that be he isn’t happy with this province’s state of affairs. The provincial election takes place June 12.
