More trees down the river along Bloor Street to get artificial turf base LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com They look like mini-putting greens, but, in fact the artificial turf around a couple of sidewalk trees in Bloor West Village are part of a pilot project aimed at prolonging tree life while keeping sidewalks tidy. The turf was installed earlier this spring – when there was still snow on the ground, according to former chair of the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) Alex Ling, owner of Ling’s Importers. One of the two pieces of artificial turf was put in around a sidewalk tree in front of his store. red mulch mess The trees along the Bloor Street West retail strip used to be immersed in red mulch, however, every time the wind blew or dogs scratched, it would end up all over the sidewalk, Ling said. “When people walk by, it’s the men who pay attention to it because it looks like golf green,” said Ling. The BIA is pleased with the tree pits’ aesthetic and results, >>>ARTIFICIAL, page 21

Ministry of Environment Baby Point Gates BIA hosts to conduct soil sampling inaugural sidewalk sale around uranium plant Big things are happening in the two-year-old Baby Point Gates Business Improvement Area (BIA). Just in time for its first-ever sidewalk sale on Saturday, June 15, the BIA’s parking committee has been successful in convincing Toronto City Council to change the parking bylaws for the east side of Jane Street and both sides of Annette Street. “While the changes are modest, they will make a few optimizations that will increase our parking capacity for short-term visitors,” said BIA vice-chair Dennis Maslo. City council approved two-

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Davenport MPP Jonah Schein has called on the Ministry of Environment to conduct its own tests of the lands surrounding the General Electric (GE) Hitachi nuclear facility on Lansdowne Avenue, near Dupont Street. In a letter to Rod Adams, Toronto district manager for the ministry, Schein, along with colleague, MP Andrew Cash, are asking that independent soil testing for uranium be undertaken. “Local residents want to know that their homes and neighbourhood are safe from the serious health effects of uranium exposure,” the letter, which was sent in February, states. “They are concerned that emissions from the plant via air and water have accumulated in the vicinity over the 50 years that the plant has been in operation.” Now t h a t t h e w a r m weather has arrived and people are planting their gardens and children are playing outside, Schein said his constituents would like assurances that the food they grow in private and community gardens is safe to eat and the air is clean. When contacted by The Villager, the ministry assured it would conduct soil sampling for uranium in the vicinity of GE Hitachi this summer, according to spokesperson Kate Jordan. “The results of the tests will be shared with the public,” she said. “The ministry will take any appropriate steps when the results of the testing are available.

hour parking between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on the east side of Jane Street as well as Annette Street, which will likely be implemented in approximately a month. Toronto Transportation Services must provide the appropriate changes to the signs, according to the BIA. The group credits ParkdaleHigh Park Councillor Sarah Doucette and her team for their help in making this change. Meanwhile, as many as six new businesses have set up shop within the BIA’s boundaries, including Baby Point Hardware, COCO – crafted organic chocolate, the High

Park Day School, Queen Margherita Pizza and Studio Z, a yoga studio. The sidewalk sale “and Social Hop of Who’s Who in the Baby Point Gates,” called ‘The Baby Point Boogie,’ takes place June 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It boasts family entertainment, sales and food, which includes face painters, a roaming band and a classic fire truck. “Hopefully, the weather keeps moving in the right direction and it will be fun for the whole family,” said Maslo.

that the amount of radiation emitted from the site each year is five times less than one dental X-ray. “Frankly, nothing has gone wrong in 50 years. This is a very safe facility.” Soil, air and water emissions from the plant are closely monitored and reported to local and federal regulators. The GE-Hitachi plant is a “close to” zeroemissions facility, said White. GE Hitachi has also conducted its own soil testing and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission have said there is no risk in that soil. Nevertheless, Schein and Cash are encouraging residents to sign a petition online calling on the ministry to “please conduct soil testing” at (www.jonahscheinmpp. ca/ge-soil/).

“The sampling and testing is being done in response to concerns expressed by the community and the request for soil testing made by Toronto’s medical officer of health.” In November of last year, during a media tour of the GE Hitachi uranium manufacturing facility, officials provided assurances of its safety. “We’re part of the fabric of this neighbourhood,” said spokesperson Christopher White at the time, adding

The Gus Ryder Outdoor Pool at Sunnyside Beach is ready for opening day, June 22. Its change rooms have been revamped with new sinks, toilets, showers and tile while a new fence has been installed around the perimeter. Purple daffodils surrounded the new fence, the same ones that have been planted all along the lakeshore. “( Toronto Parks and Recreation department) did an amazing job,” said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, who posted a photo of the new fence and blooming flowers to her Twitter account and Facebook page. The project was scheduled for this year as the pool’s old fence was decrepit. Doucette likened it to “old, giant chicken wire.” “It was also easy to climb. So, I said, ‘You can’t put up an ugly fence,’” she told parks and rec staffers. “Midnight swims are fun, but they’re

hen it comes time to decide on how we’re represented at city hall – specifically the size and number of wards in the city and how they’re divided – Toronto council must be open to a variety of ideas. Next week, there’s an executive committee report going to Toronto council on a Ward Boundary Review for the city. Toronto, currently divided into 44 wards, last undertook such a review in 2000. Since then, the wards’ make-ups and populations have changed. A city manager’s report to the executive committee notes “significant discrepancies among Toronto’s ward boundaries that warrant a review.” According to the report, any adjustments undertaken would be in place for the 2018 municipal election. our view Mayor Rob Ford, meanwhile, has made his position clear. Councillors In his comments at the execumust be open tive committee, Ford said he believes a 25-member council to all options can do the job. Noting Toronto is expected to receive three more federal ridings (bringing the total to 25), Ford said it’s an opportune time to consider reducing Toronto council’s ward allotment from two wards per riding to one. “At the rate we’re going we’re going to have 50 councillors,” Ford warned. “And you see the problems we have with 44 councillors.” There’s no denying the current 45-member size of council (44 councillors plus a mayor) can be unwieldy at times. There is merit to Ford’s argument. But it’s early in the process. We need to hear many voices. Toronto council will do Torontonians a disservice if it restricts itself – without considering any other factors – when defining new ward boundaries. Doing so may discount a more creative solution – one that gives a more effective voice to Torontonians – before it can be even explored. Figuring out what’s best for a diverse, multicultural city and its 140 neighbourhoods will be more complicated than shoehorning them into some cookie-cutter solution. For Torontonians, this is not only about your representation at city hall. This is about how your neighbourhood fits into the city. This is an important debate that needs your input. As the process moves along, we urge citizens to take advantage of the “broad engagement and public consultation process” referenced in the report.

Brewing up a round of morning coffee talk

I

n Act IV, Scene I of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, three witches enter a dark cave and hover over a bubbling caldron, cackling “Double-double toil and trouble” and a bunch of other memorable rhyming couplets too numerous to mention. Yesterday, in a setting that was more Much Ado About Nothing than Macbeth, five buddies dropped by a local fast food establishment and hovered over several different-sized coffee cups babbling about double-doubles, with nary a word, let alone rhyming couplets, uttered worth mentioning. Act Foolish, Scene Umpteen. A brightly lit, Well-Known Coffee Franchise That Shall Remain Nameless. Enter the five lads. So, Jeremy, Mike, Ted, Nick and I hooked up for our daily java fixes and we each went for a doubledouble as is our went, er want. Whatever. For those who are unfa-

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY miliar with the phrase double-double, it’s a coffee with two creams and two sugars. In that specific order. You can look it up in the Canadian Oxford dictionary. In fact, if you ask for your double-double to have two sugars and two creams instead of two creams and two sugars you will get a very funny look. What’s more, if you make the mistake of telling the cashier that, “I hate to be a stickler for detail here, but given the location, shouldn’t that look you just gave me have been not funny as in doubledouble ha, as opposed to ha-ha?” the cashier will give you an even funnier look. Moving right along, we plunked ourselves down at a nearby booth and not being able to mind our own business, as is our custom, we listened to the next 15 people order their morning

coffees. For the record, 10 of them ordered double-doubles and five asked for triple-triples, a triple-triple being three creams and three sugars, presumably. I say presumably because while doubledouble is in the dictionary, triple-triple is not. What confused us is that in the entire time we were there we didn’t hear anybody order the regular. In fact, only two of us in the group even know what the regular is: cream and sugar. I’m assuming the regular was once the regular purchase, hence the handle. Perhaps it’s time the name was changed to: the once most popular and now no longer in fashion. Anyhow, we were all gleefully sipping our respective doubledoubles when it dawned on us that each of us had a different size of cup. Jeremy had the extra small, Mike the small, Ted the medium, Nick the large, and me the extra large. The question was raised:

is a double-double for an extra small the exact same double-double as it is for a small, medium, large and extra large? Or is the doubledouble proportioned accordingly to each size? Enquiring minds wanted to know and as usual Nick was unanimously nominated to go and find out. We all looked over to the counter with bated breath as he walked up and before Nick could even open his mouth to say anything this time, the cashier gave him his funniest look ever. We’re talking a real doozy. My best guess is that it was somewhere between a quintuple-quintuple ha and octuple-octuple ha. Which I have a sneaking suspicion, when it comes to funny looks dished out from now on around here, is destined to be Nick’s new regular. transit on Union wMeetings Pearson air link planned

More public meetings are planned by Metrolinx on the progress of future electrification of the Union Pearson Express air rail link. Both the provincial transit planning agency and the Ministry of Transportation have pledged to convert the link running along the GO Kitchener rail corridor from diesel to electric, but only after the express service between Pearson International Airport and Union Station is completed in 2015. While no firm confirmation has been given for a completion date for the conversion, Metrolinx has indicated it would like to electrify by 2017 and is conducting an environmental assessment to be completed next year. Meetings are planned to update residents on the EA and address concerns about the controversial project, which has seen vigorous opposition from West Toronto advocacy groups such as the Clean Train Coalition. • Monday, June 10 at Metro Hall, Room 314, 55 John St., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

wfunding debate

Mayor Rob Ford’s Twitter account, @TOMayorFord, which usually posts innocuous announcements about city initiatives, took a decidedly political tone last week when several tweets were posted taking shots at taxes and fees proposed by Metrolinx to improve transit. “I d o n’t s u p p o r t t h e Province’s @Metrolinx plan to slap new taxes onto the backs of hard working families,” stated one of the tweets. Another tweet was directed at the premier: “Until @ Kathleen_Wynne exhausts every avenue I will not sup-

port new taxes on residents, who are telling me they can’t afford it.” The mayor’s sentiments echo a recent poll taken by Forum Research that shows a majority of Ontarians don’t support raising taxes to benefit transit. city announces

wtransit consultation At a public meeting in Riverside last week, the city’s chief planner announced a second phase of public transit consultations. Speaking at the Ralph Thornton Centre where she was a panelist for a transit discussion moderated by Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher, planner Jennifer Keesmaat said the next phase of the Feeling Congested? public campaign would focus on specific transit project priorities for the city. The first meeting is June 6, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at St. George Subway Station. Visit www.feelingcongested.ca Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig discusses transit expansion funding tools at TRBOT RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com

In his first address following the release of controversial recommendations for funding transit expansion, Metrolinx’s CEO said he was confident the Big Move project will proceed as planned. During a lunch-hour speech at the Toronto Region Board of Trade on Friday, Bruce McCuaig told an audience of business professionals he anticipated the critical remarks by federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty warning against Metrolinx’s proposal to raise the HST in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) by one per cent to help pay for its Big Move transit plan. McCuaig said the $50 billion Big Move would not be derailed despite the criticism. “(The Big Move) is not a report sitting on a shelf. It’s not wishful thinking,” said McCuaig. “It’s not some plan that will be replaced with a different plan next week, next

month or next year. It’s real. And it’s happening now.” In his speech, he outlined Metrolinx’s work on transit improvements to date, including the Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown light rail line currently under construction. Next phase In order to complete the Big Move’s next phase, McCuaig said new taxes and user fees for the region were desperately needed. “If we don’t act now to implement the next wave of projects in the Big Move blueprint, we will continue to risk our economic future and the quality of life in the GTHA,” he said. Following his speech, McCuaig told reporters he was not surprised to hear the comments made by Flaherty, who warned Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa increasing the sales tax in the GTHA and not the rest of the province would violate the terms of the HST agreement between the province and

Ottawa. McCuaig said the federal response was anticipated. He said Metrolinx’s investment strategy advises the provincial government to consider making the tax increase Ontario-wide and ensuring any revenues collected outside the GTHA do not go directly to transit projects outside the region. A spokesperson for the provincial ministry of finance said no decision had been made on increasing the HST to benefit transit. “We haven’t requested this of the federal government and this is simply one of the many recommendations made by the agency to our government on how to make the necessary investments in transit,” said Sousa’s press secretary Susie Heath. “We still need to carefully evaluate, engage with the public and municipalities before we land on our plan for a dedicated source of funding for $50 billion in transit needs in the GTHA.”

Over the next few weeks, trained volunteers will be going door-to-door in Ward 13 to let residents know more about this invasive insect and what options are available – from the treatment of healthy mature ash trees to free and subsidized replanting programs.

If you’re not home when a volunteer comes by, keep an eye on your mailbox for more information or visit www.yourleaf.org. Toronto’s urban forest provides over 60 million dollars worth of ecological goods and services each year. Let’s work together to maintain this important resource!

Musician’s ‘labour of love’ set for June release Carleton Village-based singer wrote all songs on his upcoming album LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Carleton Village-based musician Rehan Dalal is eagerly anticipating the release of his “labour of love,” his debut CD, ‘Got to Feel it,’ on June 25. “It feels really good to have it come out. It’s exciting. I’m really happy how it all came together,” Dalal told The Villager on last Thursday. “It’s kind of like a melting pot of all I like to listen to.” musical flavours Two years in the making,

Dalal describes the album’s music as a modern take on 60s’ soul, “with a little Jimi Hendrix thrown in.” “It’s a combination of three flavours – R&B, soul and a little bit of rock,” Dalal, who wrote all the songs, said. “I think the record is largely a relationship record – but, not necessarily about romantic relationships.” Dalal says his writing is dependent on what is affecting him at any given time. “My songs are therapeutic for me,” he said, adding that he tends to write between midnight and 4 a.m. – even though he ought to be off in

dream land. grew up in bombay Dalal grew up in Bombay, India, but would spend his summers in Toronto where his father lived. He moved to Toronto to attend university and decided to stay. He’s been living in the Davenport Road and Symington Avenue-area and has seen it grow and evolve over the past three years. It wasn’t until he started university that he picked up the guitar and taught himself to play. It was a rough start, Dalal recalled, however,

he has learned a lot along the way from fellow musicians. Dalal has shared the stage with the likes of Divine Brown, Big Sugar and David Ryan Harris and recently won a Toronto Independent Music Award in the Best Adult Contemporary category. Hailing from a “not particularly” musical family, Dalal says his father is a huge music fan. “I’m a huge listener,” he admitted. Dalal says he hopes his fans will see his CD as the labour of love that it is for him.

Plant a pawfect, pet-friendly garden With sweet summer in our midst, it’s time to gear up the green thumb and get gardening. This season keep your pet in mind while planting your garden and create a truly enjoyable outdoor oasis that’s also safe for your four legged friend. Clarine Lee-Macaraig, an ecoexpert with Evergreen – a national organization committed to building sustainable green cities – offers the following tips for passionate pet owners to take action in their own backyards and beyond: • Planting Prowess - Choosing the right plants is key to a safe garden. Avoid Lily of the Valley, Yew, Rhododendron, Oleander, Azaleas, Foxglove and Deadly Nightshade, which can be just as toxic to humans as pets. If you prefer a

green space to garden beds, consider white clover seeds instead of grass seeds. White clover is more tolerant of dog and cat urine. And it can grow in shade, sun and it fixes nitrogen back into your soil!

Consider white clover seeds instead of grass seeds. White clover is more tolerant of dog and cat urine. • Roaming Rover - Know your pet’s personality and design accordingly. For an energetic pup create a raised garden, which can protect some of your prized plants and keep your pet safe. Raised garden beds are also good

solutions for pets that are chewers. Be sure to allow plenty of space for your pet to run in and don’t forget a shaded area under which they can enjoy some rest and relaxation. • Safe solutions - Keeping it organic is the safest way to garden for everyone in the family. Avoid pesticides and fertilizers, which can be dangerous for four legged family members. Because pets regularly clean themselves the chemicals can irritate and harm a cat or dog. Know your pet! If your pet is sensitive and has allergies even natural or organic pest and weed controls can aggravate them. Try companion planting for the best pest control!

Some kids just Gotta Dance Dance is a great way for kids to stay active this summer- it not only keeps them moving, it gives them the opportunity to learn new skills in a fun, interactive environment. Gotta Dance is in it’s 12th year at 3581 Dundas St. W., and isgearinguptostartitssummer camp programs for both boys and girls. Starting in July, from Monday to Friday, Gotta Dance will host six weekly programs for different age groups, including All-Boy Camp, Hip Hop Camp, Acro Camp, Munchkin Camp, Elite Camp and Half Day Camp. If your child wants to experience a variety of dance techniques this summer, The Gotta Move Camp exposes them to jazz, cheerleading, hip hip, acro, Irish dance, lyrical and gymnastics- everyday!

Reduce your child’s risk of sports injuries Sports season presents a host of opportunities for athletic youngsters. But the secret to a successful season has little to do with wins and losses and a lot to do with making sure children have fun and take precautions to reduce their risk of injury. Here is a look at some popular sports and how to reduce a child’s risk of suffering some of the more common injuries associated with those sports.

Baseball/Softball Children who are playing

baseball or softball should always wear the recommended safety equipment. This includes a batting helmet, shin guards, athletic supporters, sunscreen, mouth guards, and eye protection. Proper stretching and warm-ups can make muscles and tendons limber before play.

Soccer Due to the constant movement involved with soccer, players should regularly rehydrate. Shin guards can prevent injuries and bruising to the legs, while

wearing sunscreen will protect kids from sun exposure.

Track and Field Safety precautions for track and field competitors revolve heavily around the athlete’s conditioning. Allow for ample warm-up periods and make sure athletes always wear supportive footwear. Players should always consume a good deal of water or other fluids to remain hydrated, and take sufficient breaks when the weather is warm.

-MS

GOTTA DANCE NEW!

Cheerleading

Breaks and lunchtime give the campers a chance to relax and socialize with friends. On Fridays, campers take a trip to the park for pizza and games, followed by a mini performance for parents to showcase the dancers’ hard work. Each dance class is run by professionally trained dance in-

structors who begin with warm ups to prepare the body for exercise and to prevent injury. All classes include learning of basic steps and progressive skills specific to the dance form. For more information or to register, please visit wwwgottadance.ca or call 416-604-3566.

Following a two-year major reconstruction project that included the resurfacing of sidewalks along Bloor Street West, new tree pits were installed, which consisted of a permeable sidewalk treatment to allow rainwater to get through to the roots, according to Antonella Nicaso, capital projects co-ordinator and streetscape designer for the City of Toronto. Mulch was

added on top of the tree pits, however, it would run off, creating a mess. “The BIA takes pride in a really clean street,” Nicaso said. “So, we started experimenting with a few things, consulting with urban forestry.” What resulted was the artificial tree mat. “The water goes through so the trees can be nourished, but you’ve expanded the walking surface of the sidewalk – and there’s no tripping hazard,” she said. The BIA experimented with a green one, located outside Ling’s Importers,

PAOLO & ANTONELLA

and a black one, installed outside of New Balance, just east of Beresford Avenue. An informal vote among the BIA indicated the green was the favourite, Nicaso said. Environmental benefits include reducing soil compaction and helping the roots absorb nutrients. The cost of the tree mats was shared by the BIA and the City of Toronto. The remaining turf will be installed in the fall. “We’ve received really good feedback about this project,” Nicaso said.

Hi…my name is Paolo and I am 9 years old and in grade 3. I have been a carrier with my mom for over a year. I enjoy delivering the flyers every week with my mom because I am a social person. I like to meet new people and get acquainted. In my spare time, I enjoy bike riding, karate, soccer and reading books. I also enjoy going to company festivities. I am saving up for more DS games and a WII console. Congratulations…keep up the great work!
