Newlyweds Tripti Ninan and Ryan Perera are Millennials and purchased their first home in Toronto just under a year ago. Based on their combined income and the down payment they were able to come up with, the couple bought a 700-square-foot, one-bedroom-plusden condo unit in Toronto’s west end near a subway station. “We knew our first step would be a condo. We wanted to start small and we wanted something low maintenance,”

There’s more space for learning at two west-end schools Keele, Swansea public schools celebrate opening of expansions LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The consensus among students at Keele Street and Swansea Jr. and Sr. public schools since they’ve moved into their new classrooms, which are part of significant additions, is – they’re happy they no longer have to learn in detached portables. That sentiment was shared by students from both schools during special expansion project grand opening ceremonies held last week on Wednesday and Thursday. “Everyone is thrilled this day has come,” Swansea P.S. principal Mary Salvarinas told The Villager on Wednesday. “They love the new space.” When asked what excites them about the expansion, students shared several reasons, Salvarinas pointed out, including, “It’s a fresh start,” they have better access to technology, and “I don’t need my coat and boots to go to the washroom.”

“Thank you for getting us out of those portables,” Maya Denenberg, a Grade 8 student at Keele P.S., told her audience who had gathered in the new space for an unveiling June 2. “We’re very lucky we got this part of the school built – everyone loves it.” Senior students at both schools moved into their new spaces in January. Swansea’s new three-floor wing includes new science, technology, and engineering classrooms, which Salvarinas called “world class” and “leading edge.” The addition boasts large windows and lots of light. “Our dream has come true,” Salvarinas said. Toronto District School Board chair and Ward 7 trustee Robin Pilkey credited her predecessor, former trustee Irene Atkinson, and Parkdale-High Park politicians, MPP Cheri DiNovo and Councillor Sarah Doucette, for all their hard work ensuring the expansion was built,

Swansea Public School celebrated the grand opening of its new expansion with help from Toronto District School Board (TDSB) superintendent of schools Jane Phillips Long, TDSB chair and Ward 7 trustee Robin Pilkey, students Yalissa Brown-Richards and Adrian Ng, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, and Swansea P.S. principal Mary Salvarinas.

to be included.” Three schools in the neighbourhood were in desperate need of expansion – Runnymede P.S., Keele, and Swansea, DiNovo pointed out.

“Two out of three ain’t bad,” she quipped. “I want to thank Irene for putting the pressure on the (Ministry of Education). We know how difficult it is to get funding for our schools. This really is about the students. We love you and that’s why we do it.” Doucette said she wrote a letter to the ministry expressing the need for these expansions, especially because of all the new residential developments that were slated to be built in the area. Section 37 funding went towards the schools’ additions (section 37 of the planning act permits the City of Toronto to authorize increases in permitted height and/ or density through the zoning bylaw in return for community benefits). “I’m really excited to see this,” Doucette said as she stood behind the podium in the glass link that connects the new addition to the old school building. The completion of the expansion comes a year after Keele celebrated its centennial anniversary. “We’re proud to say we celebrate excellence not only in academics, but our students leave here with great skills in arts, athletics, drama and character education,” principal Jennie Petkoe said.

learn to do more with less,” she said. Real estate broker Frank Leo, who has been serving clients in Toronto and the GTA for 28 years, said for Millennials the biggest thing is the pressure of being “squeezed out of the market.” Leo, of RE/MAX West Realty Ltd., advises young buyers to avoid jumping into the market before doing their research, specifically knowing exactly what they want and can afford. “A good representative on your side helps keep your emotions in check,” he said. “If a property isn’t what you need or want then don’t buy it.” He added those between the ages of 18 to 35 who want to purchase a property in Toronto need to take a close look at their needs, and based on their budget a good realtor will be able to help find the right home to buy. “If you buy well, that’s a good investment. If you buy poorly then you’re in trouble. You want to make sure you have someone who knows their stuff to give you the best advice,” he said. Leo also said Millennials need to realize it’s not likely they’ll be buying the home of their dreams the first time around. “Often, the first property is a stepping stone that fits your current needs and one that will get a good return,” he said. “Real estate is all about understanding value and getting the best property for your money.” Meray Mansour, real estate agent with Royal LePage Estate Realty, agreed noting getting into a smaller “first-step home” like a condo or a small bungalow for a few years is what will help first-time homeowners build equity for their dream home. With 18 years of experience in Toronto’s real estate market, she said bidding wars for anything in the $550,000 to $700,000 range are to be expected. “There’s so much demand and very low stock. I advise my clients to understand bidding wars are a reality but to not be discouraged,” she said. “And because today’s market is so hot, being too emotional can lead to irrational decisions. You need a realtor that’s going to advocate for you in this type of market.” She encouraged Millennials to go for it if they do have enough money saved up to get into the market. “Don’t wait because the market is so hot,” she said.

he city kicked off Bike Month, which runs from May 30 to June 30, with a blitz by Toronto police writing tickets to drivers parking in bike lanes. The heightened enforcement campaign called “Right 2 Bike” ran for one week until June 5 and saw parking enforcement officers working with traffic services and divisional units hand out 273 tickets at $150 a piece, totalling $40,950 in fines. That sounds like a lot, but the campaign to target drivers with total disregard for cyclists should continue in some shape or form. Bad habits are hard to break, especially this one. Since a bylaw change in 2014, which increased the fine for blocking a bike lane from $60 to $150, about 17,000 tickets have been issued to date. For more recent empirical evidence, just check Twitter where cyclists regularly tweet pictures of cars, taxis and our view delivery trucks blocking bike Make biking to lanes. While parking enforcement work easier for officer Brian Moniz noted most of the enforcement in the blitz cyclists took place in the downtown core, this could be a growing and more prevalent issue across the city. additional blitzes

With the city discussing how to expand cycling infrastructure in Toronto to the tune of $16 million per year for 10 years, any increase in bike lanes would only exacerbate the problem of cyclists being put in danger by drivers blocking their right-of-way. Perhaps having additional blitzes and an increased awareness campaign, combined with even higher fines for offenders is a potential solution to curbing bad driver behaviour. The alternative of not having some kind of sustained campaign to ensure the safety of cyclists will have an adverse impact on what the city seemingly wants to achieve through holding Bike Month each year. That is to encourage people to get out of their cars and ride their bikes more. Bike to Work days? Good luck finding more people to participate if it means navigating Toronto streets with the added challenge of swerving around parked cars.

Karygiannis plays role of council’s angry man Ah, Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis. We have not seen his like since… well really, since the last time the voters of Ward 39-Scarborough Agincourt sent a councillor to City Hall. Jim Karygiannis is the first-term successor to Toronto’s former budget chief, Mike Del Grande — who kept Ward 39 strange for a decade before that, often with the help of Karygiannis himself, who had been a Liberal MP for even longer in the area. In 2004, the two of them made headlines, personally helping to bust up marijuana grow-ops in their communities, while Del Grande also kept an inventory of constituents whose homes violated city bylaws. Del Grande had a brief tenure as former Mayor Rob Ford’s first budget chief, but consistently bemoaned the failings of his colleagues on council and delinquent constituents alike, maintaining a consistent and in retro-

david nickle the city spect magnificent rage. When Del Grande decided he’d had enough in 2014, Karygiannis happily assumed his angry role — at if anything a greater volume. He took on the Uber ride-sharing industry in the rhetorical equivalent of a berserk rampage, behaving so badly during Licensing and Standards Committee hearings that Mayor John Tory called him on the carpet. More than a decade after he and Del Grande waged their own local War on Drugs, he came to the defence of illegal storefront marijuana shops. And this week, two reports from the city’s Integrity Commissioner calling him out for behaviour not too dissimilar to those pot-busting days with Mike Del Grande. In one instance in 2015, Karygiannis scared the bejeezers out of a family

guilty of parking on the “skirt” of their home’s driveway. In another, he scared the bejeezers out of an Uber driver who he’d spotted going to pick up a ride in a house in his ward. The Integrity Commissioner found that Karygiannis had run afoul of the councillors’ code of conduct, which incredibly requires that councillors not intimidate people in the course of going about their business. On June 7, Karygiannis mumbled an apology on the floor of council. But he wasn’t sorry, not really. In an interview, Karygiannis maintained that he should be able to tell constituents to obey the law if he wants to, particularly if the city is slow to enforce. And if he’s intimidating in the course of doing that? “Maybe the method, she (the Integrity Commissioner) doesn’t agree with it. Maybe my method is a little rough,” he said. “I’m a big guy. What can I tell you? I’m six feet

and 260 pounds. When you see me walking up to you, you feel intimidated.” Maybe there always has to be a Jim Karygiannis at City Hall: someone who ignores decorum and puts on a show, a John Belushi character turning civilized discourse into a proper Animal House. When he was a councillor, Rob Ford fulfilled that role, spewing rhetoric across the city while digging down on the little things in neighbourhoods and dissing his colleagues for their city-funded office budgets. Doug Ford played that role a bit when Rob became mayor and Giorgio Mammoliti still dips toe in that pool from time to time, but clearly he’s getting tired. So maybe it’s good, that Karygiannis is here to keep an old Toronto tradition alive. David Nickle is Metroland Media Toronto’s city hall reporter. His column runs every Thursday. 4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Students take ‘drunk’ spin behind the wheel Guardian reporter, an experienced driver himself, knocks over multiple cones in his attempt ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com High school students were allowed to drive impaired in north Etobiocke last week. And they each had a police officer beside them. The students were taking part in Ford Motor Company’s Driving Skills for Life program, which included taking a drive wearing goggles that simulate alcohol impairment. The event took place in a closed parking lot at Woodbine Racetrack. “We want to demonstrate to them that there should be a zero tolerance for impairment and driving,” said Dave Drimmie, a Ford instructor. “They’re going to run over cones, they’re going to weave in and out of the lane, they’re going to either drive very slowly or very quickly, all issues that will demonstrate to them that it’s not safe to drive a vehicle impaired.” Grade 12 student Ryan Harris said the program changed his perspective, literally. ‘everything is blurry’ “You put the goggles on and everything is blurry,” he said. “You don’t know where everything is. It shows you how hard it is to actually drive drunk and how unsafe it is.” One goggle mimics how a person sees after a couple of drinks while another after four or five drinks. “We have fun in this simulation. But it’s not fun when it’s done in your own motor vehicle,” instructor Ralph Stotschek told students. The teens were cautioned about the three d’s: drunk driving, drugged driving and distracted driving. “If you think you could do it, you’ll find out the hard way that it cannot be done,” Stotschek warned. Const. Ryan Willmer of 23 Division said he hopes the program would deter teens “from making the wrong decisions.” “It gives youth the opportunity to see what it’s really like to drive impaired.” Willmer said he has come across young drunk drivers countless times over the past decade. being pulled over by the constable: “I was drinking and I thought I could drive.” “Some ended up in bad accidents and some ended up with me stopping them before they got into an accident,” said Willmer, adding there were also those who “couldn’t be charged because they died.” Seeing the carnage by impaired drivers first hand is troubling, the officer said in an interview. “It makes me think: Why isn’t the message getting out. There are so many campaigns. ... We’ve got to figure out a way to make it click. This could be it,” he said, referring to the driving skills for life program. Participants also had a lesson on vehicle handling and distracted driving and could also try on a special suit that simulates drug impairment.

Right after pulling out of a parking spot, I “hugged the corner too close

and hit two or three pylons,” Willmer said. “And then throughout...you way overshot the turns. Even parking, you’re off by a few feet.” What would have happened had I been out on the street? It would have been deadly, Willmer replied. “There’s a very low percentage of people that are driving around drunk like this that something doesn’t happen,” he added.

City traffic assistants, which is to say police officers, will be stationed at key intersections to help improve traffic flow as a part of Toronto’s congestion management plan, said Mayor John Tory Monday. Tory announced the pilot project, which will see eight intersections and stretches of road overseen by “traffic assistant personnel,” or police officers. The plan, Tory said, is to make traffic move more quickly and make the intersections safer for pedestrians and cyclists. “The No. 1 priority for Toronto residents continues to be their ability to move around this city. We’re taking action to keep Toronto moving by targeting some of our most congested intersections,” Tory said in a statement. “Traffic assistant personnel will improve the flow of traffic by directing traffic, making sure vehicles don’t block intersections and stopping illegal left turns.” The intersections and roadways, which will be overseen four weeks in the summer and another four weeks in the fall, include the following: n Bay Street and Queen Street n Front Street and Simcoe Street n Lake Shore Boulevard Parklawn Road n Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street n Front Street and University Avenue n Bay Street and Bloor Street n University Avenue and Adelaide Street n Bay Street from Bloor Street to Front Street

Soccer unites Bishop Marrocco students with Attawapiskat teens LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School’s senior boys soccer team has trained for the city final and for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AA championship, where they finished third last week. Yet, the team has an even bigger challenge on its hands; the boys are in the midst of raising funds so they can travel to Attawapiskat to share their soccer skills and passion for the sport with their peers on the isolated First Nation in Northern Ontario. Coaches Paulo Pereira and Daniel Romano, with their team, will help facilitate a soccer camp from June 23 to 30. “Soccer has been a therapy, an outlet for our boys,” Pereira said recently at the school at Dundas West and Bloor streets. “Soccer keeps some of these kids in school.” Tyler Da Corte, a Grade 12

soccer, “everyone wanted to go,” Pereira said. “We were excited,” said mid-fielder Henrique Franco, a Grade 12 student. “Our coaches were always letting us know what was happening there.” The team has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds needed to travel to Attawapiskat. Pereira has been communicating with staff from Vezina Secondary School and the recreation co-ordinator in Attawapiskat to organize a soccer camp, and to establish a long-lasting relationship with annual visits and an exchange program. “We’d like to set them up with a soccer field so they can play a regular season,” Romano said. The team has been collecting gently used soccer gear – uniforms, cleats, nets, balls, whistles – that members will bring with them to donate to the Attawapiskat community. Vezina school staff were receptive to the idea of Bishop

Marrocco students visiting. It took Pereira a little bit of effort to make initial contact. After phone calls and emails went unanswered, he called a church in the northern community whose priest explained the mystery. “He said, ‘They’re all on a hunting break,’” Pereira recalled. The boys are in for a culture shock, Romano said. Their hosts are organizing Culture Days in honour of the team’s visit. Funding will go toward plane tickets, new soccer equipment that will be purchased and left for Attawapiskat students and community members, and food. As far as accommodations go, the team will be bunking in sleeping bags on the Vezina gym floor. Donations of gently used or new soccer equipment can be made at Bishop Marrocco, 1515 Bloor St. W. City staff getting closer to High Park Zoo’s missing capybaras LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

arrived from an animal broker last month, was spotted around 9 p.m. “I arrived on the scene just after 10 p.m. and together we searched in the darkness until around 11:30 (p.m.),” Lovett told The Villager. The guinea pig-like creature managed to elude capture by squeezing through a hole in a nearby fence and jumped into the water, Lovett said on Facebook. “We managed to obtain important data as to its physical condition and

Ben Lovatt is the founder of the natural history museum Prehistoria and has experience wrangling reptiles – not rodents. But, that’s why a friend reached out to him when he spotted one of the two capybara escapees in High Park Sunday at night. The capybara, who has been living with another in High Park since both escaped from High Park Zoo as they

where it is likely residing,” Lovett wrote, adding that this information has been relayed to zoo staff. The capybara fugitives are having the time of their lives within High Park’s 400 acres – they’re safe and eating well, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette said. “We have found tracks. We know where they are in the park,” she said. “The biggest challenge is, they’re in heaven. They’re living a very happy life.”

Staff are still leaving treats out for the South American natives. The type of feed that’s being put out has a specific scent to help lure the animals back to their zoo enclosure. City staff are still working with the Toronto Zoo and trackers to get them home. Doucette said she doesn’t want to disclose the exact location where the pair is living for fear people will traipse off the path and scare them away.

Discussions continue for proposed men’s shelter at Runnymede Two more information meetings have been scheduled to discuss the proposed men’s shelter at a former Goodwill store site at 731 Runnymede Rd. A recent public meeting to discuss the shelter drew so many people many didn’t get inside the venue as it was filled to capacity. York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata hosts a meeting today at Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary School, 99 Humber Blvd. S., in the cafeteria at 7 p.m. Parkdale-

S TICKET E ON SAL NOW

High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette will host a meeting Monday, June 13 at the Annette Recreation Centre, 333 Annette St., at 7 p.m. In a letter to constituents on social media, Doucette acknowledged the development of new homeless shelters and other social services “can stir up a great deal of emotions wherever they are planned.” “Indeed, I have been hearing from those who recognize the necessity of helping the homeless and from others who do not believe the city

should be providing these services at all,” she said. “I know that residents in the northern part of Ward 13 have some concerns about this shelter and want more information. I am hearing loud and clear that people want to know how this proposal will impact their neighbourhoods.” As directed by city council, staff at the City of Toronto are working to find up to 15 new emergency shelters in neighbourhoods across the city. They are essential to provide service to the growing number of people who

experience homelessness, as well as to replace shelters that are moving or need to be redeveloped. Staff have recommended a new 24-hour men’s shelter with supportive services be built at 731 Runnymede Rd. This location was chosen based on the requirements of the Municipal Shelter Bylaw, which include being on a minor arterial road with access to transit. The shelter would be operated by city staff. It would provide 24/7 services including meals, counselling/

case management, assistance to find housing and access to employability programs for up to 100 men. “As residents, you do have a choice. You can simply say no to this shelter and most likely have it pass at council anyway, or we can work with city staff, the Ward 11 councillor and the broader community to address concerns and find solutions that work,” Doucette said. DiNovo ‘unofficially’ enters federal NDP leadership race HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo will not be paying the $30,000 fee to run as an official federal candidate for the NDP Party, she announced Tuesday. DiNovo told The Villager, her decision to run unofficially is to show those who didn’t vote NDP, especially

millennials, that politicians should stand up for their principles, and it’s not all about the money. “I’m an unofficial candidate,” she said. “I don’t have that kind of money and I don’t plan on raising it. We have to get back to the principles our party was founded on and I think there’s a real hunger for that.” DiNovo made the

announcement to run for the position previously held by Tom Mulcair at Roncesvalles United Church, surrounded by friends and family. She was one of the first NDP members to openly call for Mulcair’s resignation after the party’s defeat in the 2015 federal campaign, which pushed the party to third place. She told The Villager her

decision to throw her name in the ring came after the April NDP Convention in Edmonton, where she saw a “pulling away” from the founding principles of the party especially when it came to the $30,000 up-front cost. “There were attacks on the lead manifesto, attacks on party decisions coming from within the party and that’s when I thought what’s hap-

pening here? This is not good for the party,” she said. “I thought someone has to say something, yet again, and I was hearing from people from the grassroots of the party – and those who aren’t in the party who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for NDP last time – say where are the principles of our party? It shouldn’t be about the money, which I agree.”

Winning night at races for St. Joe’s It was a winning night at the races for the ‘St. Joe’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack,’ which raised $125,000 in support of mental health care at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, last week. In its fourth year, the event brought together more than 325 people to support a critical priority for the hospital. Proceeds will go towards a $3-million project to expand and enhance the Mental Health Emergency Services Unit. The unit is the first point of contact for the 6,500 men, women and children who come to St. Joe’s every year in crisis due to a mental health condition. ”We have one of the busiest units in the GTA and expanding this facility means we can enhance our emergency care service and the care space so our providers can continue giving our patients the best care possible,” Dr. Jose Silveira, chief of psychiatry, said in a statement. The vision for the unit is to have eight private rooms and

to design the unit in a way that encourages healing – with space that feels warm, comfortable and calming at a time when people are anxious and scared. Thanks to an anonymous donor, every dollar raised at this year’s event was doubled. St. Joe’s Plate was once again spearheaded by Mary Anne De Monte Whelan with the support of a committee that included two mothers who have been personally

impacted by mental health. “We have experienced such incredible support for this event from both the community we serve and others who want to support the advancement of mental health services for those in need,” Maria Dyck, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation, said in a statement. “It’s inspiring to see so many friends come together to support mental illness in our community.”

She is a very positive and outgoing person and is always making everyone around her smile. She is very active and works out 4-5 times/ week. She loves all sports and gets really into games on tv, she’s a crazy fan she says! She used to play lots of sports growing up and is still involved in a soft ball league and volleyball. She has lots of friends and said that she has a very active social life. She likes to have fun, throw her cares to the wind and enjoy her life.
