Perth Avenue school to plant canoe garden, host fun fair
bowl time
lisa rainford lrainford@insidetoronto.com Lots is happening at Perth Avenue Public School, in the Junction Triangle neighbourhood. The school year may be winding down, however, activities are heating up. This spring, Perth P.S. is planting a canoe in its front garden, which will boast native species to encourage visits from bees and butterflies. Help for the project comes from Homegrown National Park rangers from the David Suzuki Foundation, parent volunteers and students. To help fund the canoe garden, the school launched an Indiegogo campaign. The organization ‘Community Canoe’ ( www.communitycanoe.ca ) contacted the school to see if it would be interested in planting a canoe. The organization is affiliated with David Suzuki Foundation’s Homegrown National Park project and has been planting canoes around Toronto for a few years. Staff photo/IAN KELSO

said earlier this month. “Planting a canoe seemed like a great idea. We’ve been fundraising for the project via Indiegogo and are almost at our goal.” The canoe garden was scheduled for planting this week, according to parent council co-chair Natalie Bomberry. Not only is the canoe garden part of two outdoor classrooms, but so is a theatre stage and a water station. The garden is just one of several initiatives, including the school’s fun fair that will take place Thursday, June 18 from 3 to 7 p.m. The event boasts a first-ever silent auction and basket raffle. More than $5,000 has been raised through service, products and items for the silent auction, reported Bomberry. There will be a bouncy castle for the kids, three-legged races an ice cream truck and Zumba dancing.
Parkdale-High Park NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo’s private member’s bill banning conversion therapy for LGBTQ teens 18 and under was approved by the province last week, just in time for Toronto’s Pride Week, which takes place later this month. In fact, DiNovo believes Bill 77 was passed in record time, taking only two months from tabling to becoming law. “It’s wonderful. It’ll save children’s lives,” she said. DiNovo attributes the bill’s
swift passing to its all-party support, including Premier Kathleen Wynne’s. “We really wanted to get this done,” she said. Bill 77 “sends a strong message” to counselling services covered by OHIP that conversion therapy is banned for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender children. “People are shocked it has gone on this long,” DiNovo said. The longtime LGBTQ advocate said that in speaking to a group of 100 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students from across Canada recently, the majority from Ontario, 50 per cent of them raised their hands when asked if they had experienced conversion therapy. “It goes on everywhere,” DiNovo said.
As part of the Gay Straight Alliance Committee, DiNovo said she heard doctors and psychiatrists and therapists testify that they conducted conversion therapy. “They just billed it as counselling,” she said. The bill, said DiNovo, gives victims a voice. “I’m hoping it will save lives. The trans community has the highest rate of suicide.” Just last month, DiNovo was recognized for her LGBTQ activism with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Inspire Awards. The ordained minister can be credited for presiding over the first legal same-sex marriage registered in Canada.

Improved transportation should be a Pan Am legacy I
magine a legacy from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games where people get around this city in a more efficient fashion. Given the preparations being made for the Games’ traffic influx, it’s not an unrealistic hope. Hundreds of thousands of additional people are expected in the city and the Greater Toronto Area for the Games next month, so it’s important for everyone to do some transportation planning. This challenge on our roads will be in addition to other planned road construcour view tion projects during the summer months. Toronto stands Key to this planning process – for residents, businesses and to benefit after visitors – will be understanding Games are over the tools and resources available to help get around the city. This week a web-based transportation planner, accessible at www.2015gamestripplanner.ca, was launched by the province. It provides real-time traffic details, such as road closures, traffic speeds, HOV lane locations, a booking feature for accessible parking spots and more. An app is also available for download on Apple, Android and Blackberry devices. That announcement comes a day after GO Transit unveiled its enhanced service plans for the Games. These include more service on routes that serve major events and that Games tickets can be used as valid fare on GO on the day of that event. There’s an additional opportunity from all of this transportation preparation that stretches well into the future: applying what’s being learned. Traffic is not a new issue to the city. What successes can be shared from these preparations? What lessons can be learned? We have to study the traffic patterns that unfold during the Games. We have to measure the impact of initiatives such as HOV lanes. Surely there are aspects of the web trip planner that can be co-opted for travelling within the city after the Games are done? With the transportation planning, there are additional potential benefits for the city – not just for future special events, but for day-to-day life. That’s what a legacy is all about.

Toronto council will have to deal with budget shortfall at some point
R
emember the 2015 budget? It’s been a few months now, and there’s been a lot of water under the elevated highway, as it were, so it’s understandable if you don’t. The takeaway: property tax increases were kept reasonable, in spite of the fact that Toronto was hit with an $86-million shortfall due to housing costs downloaded by the provincial government. Council dealt with that shortfall with some cuts, and a $60-million “loan” from the city’s capital investment program: money that will have to be replenished over the next several years. As dubious councillors voted to approve the scheme, Mayor John Tory promised that soon he would be offering up a plan as to how best to pay
david nickle the city back that loan to the city’s capital investments. Two per cent cuts to spending across all departments was one of the ideas bandied about. This week, Toronto’s budget committee received and passed on Tory’s more refined plan: which amounted to not much more – and in important ways considerably less – than that. Tory sent a letter to the committee, asking that city departments and cityfunded agencies like the TTC all be asked to find two per cent of savings. The letter is not legally binding – only council as a whole can give direction to the city’s civil service – but
it’s clear enough as far as it goes. Tory goes on, however, to ask for some other things: he would like to make sure that the property tax increase remains at or below the rate of inflation, and wants the city to continue to fund public transit in an aggressive way. Oh, and these efficiencies mustn’t lead to any reductions in service. On June 9, the city’s budget committee had a look at the letter and sent it off to city staff. As budget chief Gary Crawford noted, these kinds of letters have come out of every mayor’s office since Mel Lastman. There have rarely been times that their advice has been taken to the letter, and Crawford admitted after the meeting that over the next few years council
will probably have to figure out some other measures in order to finally balance the budget. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks, something of a critic on these matters, put things more bluntly. “There will come a day when we have a stark choice between reducing the services we deliver to people and finding a way to pay for them,” he said. “Last term, we had a mayor incapable of facing that choice. I’m hoping this council is a little more adult because the longer we put this off the worse it gets.” I guess we’ll see just how bad it gets over the next few years. Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.
What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. Peter & Greg Walker Contracting have been serving the needs of Toronto homeowners since 1981. They are members of the Certified Contractors Network, have manufacturer certified installers, are fully insured and have been voted Etobicoke’s “Top Roofing Company” 14 times (including 2015).

Teaching came naturally to Rice >>>from page 1 val in the province, will be a part of this year’s TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The annual event, which can be credited for presenting some of the biggest names in jazz, kicks off this month from Thursday, June 18 until Monday, June 29. Attracting as many as 500,000 audience members, the festival will see 1,500 musicians performing in 350-plus concerts in just 12 days. The Bobby Rice Latin Jazz Big Band performs Friday, June 26 at 12:30 p.m. at Nathan Phillips Square. The midday concert is free, and will likely attract those out on lunch, Rice anticipates, or college and high school students, who are finished school. Rice, who currently teaches at Humber College, started playing the trumpet at 14 years of age in a beginner band. “Teaching for me has always been natural,” he said. “I remember in Grade 11, they let me run the junior stage band. It seemed quite natural.

I got hired at Humber College in my early 20s.” Rice does most of his composing on the piano and most of his performing on the trumpet. He got the chance to work with such singers as Twain, before she was known as Shania, at the Deerhurst Inn. “I worked with her six days
a week,” he said. “I knew her brothers.” Rice played with Vali in a Legends of Rock ‘n Roll show at the SkyDome. “He was a really nice guy,” recalled Rice, who said few people know that Vali’s first instrument was the trumpet. When he had the opportunity to work with Clark, Rice said he was shocked to find out just how nervous he was. It wasn’t performance jitters, not about the size of the audience, but about wanting to “get everything right,” Rice said. Rice, a Sterling Road resident, is a Juno award nominee. Cowan hopes people will make minor changes to their habits >>>from page 1 by the Street Safety Coalition, comprised of west-end Cycle Toronto ward groups (13, 14, and 18) and the DIGIN community group. “It’s taken a long time, but here we are,” Cowan told The Villager of the Street Safety Initiative that launched this month. It was two summers ago that Cowan and Sutherland connected. It was then that Cowan had begun riding her electric bike to work. In
doing so, she quickly saw the hostility that emanated from road users. “I was just appalled by the anger on the streets. It was just terrible,” Cowan recalled. This was during the ‘Rob Ford Era,’ she said, when the ‘war on cars’ was so prevalent. “I was expecting cars to be the bad guy, but the cars seemed to be behaving themselves because they had rules. It was the bikes – they’d go whizzing through stop lights or
cutting through stop signs on side streets,” Cowan said. “Pedestrians would jut out in front of cyclists at streetcar stops. People would say things to me aggressively – even though E-bikes were allowed to be in bike lanes.” What does one do when he or she is faced with the overcrowded subway system and the cost of parking downtown, Cowan asked. “I thought, ‘what do we do?’ Let’s start with the attitudes and behav-
PUBLIC MEETING #2 DAVENPORT COMMUNITY RAIL OVERPASS COME LEARN ABOUT THE PROJECT AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE DAVENPORT RESIDENTS’ REFERENCE PANEL Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Metrolinx is moving forward with Regional Express Rail (RER), a program that will provide significant new travel choices on the GO Transit network across the region. WHAT WE ARE PLANNING Metrolinx is planning to build an elevated rail corridor that follows the current GO Transit route between Bloor Street West and Davenport Road. The Davenport Community Rail Overpass project is intended to eliminate the ‘Davenport Diamond’, one of the busiest train intersections in North America, where CP Rail freight trains and GO Transit passenger trains cross at a ground-level rail crossing. HEAR FROM OTHER DAVENPORT RESIDENTS AND SHARE YOUR VIEWS Metrolinx randomly recruited 36 residents to participate on a Residents’ Reference Panel to work on behalf of the community to review the design and consider ways that the Davenport Community Rail Overpass can benefit the neighbourhood. You and your neighbours are invited to learn more about the Panel’s recommendations and the results of our noise and vibration studies: DATE: TIME: LOCATION:
Tuesday, June 23, 2015 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Presentation at 7:00 p.m. Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre* 1900 Davenport Road Toronto, Ontario
* This location is accessible. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Metrolinx is in the early stages of assessing the environmental impacts of this transit project by completing an Environmental Assessment following the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), as prescribed by Ontario Regulation 231/08 made under the Environmental Assessment Act. As part of the TPAP, we are beginning our engagement with our neighbours and stakeholders. There will be additional opportunities to discuss the environmental assessment results and design elements of the overpass. STAY CONNECTED All comments and feedback received will be documented and will help inform the TPAP process. iours.” Many people know the rules of the road and follow them; others disregard them while “some don’t even have a clue what the rules are.” That’s why the Street Safety Initiative exists. Its goal is to connect community groups to deliver a public education and outreach campaign to promote the message of ‘Vision Zero.’ “Traffic collisions are not inevitable, and if individuals make minor changes to their habits, they could save a life,” the initiative states. The campaign is constructed around a website and in-person outreach to the public and particularly new drivers. The website includes key messages as well as
public awareness tools that alert people to disrespectful street behaviours, like aggressive and distracted driving, cyclists or anyone else running red lights, or crossing the street while texting. “We’ll be at street festivals handing out buttons, encouraging parents to talk to their children about safe road use,” Cowan said. “In the fall, we’ll reach out to schools and community groups, to make presentations, to get people talking about how their actions affect everyone.” The website will be updated regularly. Cowan is encouraging everyone to get involved.

You’re Invited We want to show our thanks to the Bloor community! On June 6, Metrolinx celebrates the launch of Union Pearson Express— the dedicated air-rail link that speeds travellers from Union Station downtown to Toronto Pearson, stopping at Bloor and Weston stations on the way. It’s a reliable 25 minute ride, with trains leaving every 15 minutes, 19 and a half hours per day. Progress isn’t easy sometimes, and we know that the Bloor community has
had to put up with our dust, our noise and inconveniences along the way. So, on June 14, we want to thank you personally by offering a free ride on UP Express from 11 am to 3 pm. Please come down and see what we’ve built. There will be a BBQ, giveaways and lots of fun things to do for the whole family. We’re working hard to build a city for the future, but we couldn’t have done it without you.
WHEN: 11 am to 3 pm, June 14 WHERE: The Bloor GO/UP Station Rail Path off Randolph Avenue

Empty seats mark launch of UP line The Union Pearson (UP) Express officially launched last week to great fanfare, and empty seats. Saturday, June 6 marked the first day of service for UP, which promises to operate four trains an hour for nearly 20 hours every day. That means one million fewer car trips to Toronto’s Pearson airport in UP’s first year of operation alone, according to Metrolinx. But even with free rides taken into account, many UP trains were half-empty on Saturday, leaving some to wonder if the service will ever be viable in the long run. . Metrolinx is promising to deal with complaints of graffiti adorning the new UP sound walls. The walls are up in sections along the Georgetown South rail corridor and are intended to reduce the noise and vibration from diesel-powered UP trains. The controversial taxi alternative Uber took heat after it significantly raised fares during Monday’s TTC meltdown. Customers who ordered an Uber vehicle off their mobile devices – after it was reported the entire TTC subway system was down due to a power outage – reported fare hikes far exceeding the usual rate. The idea of a street acting as more than just a way to get around has gained traction among civic planners. Now the city is hoping to get public feedback for how it can create future Complete Streets which take into account the needs of all users, such as people who walk, bicycle, take transit or drive. They also consider other uses like sidewalk cafés, street furniture, street trees, utilities, and stormwater management. The city is hosting an open house at the Central YMCA, located at 20 Grosvenor Street on Thursday, June 18, plus organizing “moving conversations” about the matter in North York and Etobicoke. Delving into the world of male-female relationships LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The star of Theatre Asylum’s latest offering says audiences should “expect the unexpected.” Jamie Robinson appears in ‘FORNES x 2’, a linking together of two one-act plays by Pulitzer Prizenominated Cuban-American playwright Maria Irene Fornés, ‘FORNES x 2’ is billed as “an immersive experience” set in Toronto’s Kensington Market. It runs until Sunday, June 14. Robinson said his interest was piqued when he was approached by director Jennifer H. Capraru to star in the play. It tells one story within two plays and is acted by three thespians. “Jen contacted me – she’s known my work in the past. The play was right up my alley. After I read it, I had a million questions,” Robinson told The Villager. “That always gets me.” The challenge of the production,
Jamie Robinson
Robinson said, was discovering the play’s “zany, cartoonish world” that delves into the relationship between men and women, he said. Robinson, who lives in the Dovercourt Road and College Streetarea, said he knew he wanted to become a professional actor as early as age 11 after experiencing

the love and appreciation of his first audience. “It was the first time I had an audience applaud for me,” he recalled. “I felt at home.” At age 14, the west-end Toronto born Robinson, enrolled at the Etobicoke School of the Arts. “It was exactly like (the 1980s TV show) Fame. There was singing and dancing in the classrooms,” Robinson said with a laugh. Having shifted his focus in recent years to directing, Robinson said it was great to return to the stage as an actor. Although, Robinson’s experience is vast, he said he continually jokes with friends that he’s constantly trying to retire. “It’s a difficult life,” he confessed of the acting world. FORNES x 2 can be seen at 213 Augusta Ave., a hidden, multiroomed, underground space.

Lover of Lansdowne, singer Brooklyn Doran, prepares for first NXNE appearance LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Singer-songwriter Brooklyn Doran has been singing for as long as she can remember, yet the 25-year- old has yet to experience that ‘I’m a professional musician’ feeling. It’s been a year since Doran released her first EP, There’s A Light On a collection of indie folk songs with influences of jazz and pop. The Kenora, Ont. native describes her music as lyrical, inspired by the nature of her hometown and life on the lake with a little urban mixed in. Doran relocated to Toronto to pursue her education at York University and is partial to the Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue-area. “I talk about the city a lot,” she said of her music. “I love Lansdowne. There used to be a tea shop where I’d drink tea and write.” Every boy she’s ever kissed has lived on Lansdowne, Doran said with a laugh. “I really like Lansdowne. It’s not gentrified yet. There are lots of hidden gems to discover. I like to romanticize that,” she said. In fact, she recently shot a video for a song called ‘Lansdowne’ at the Lansdowne

subway station and nearby Bloor West Street. The music video is comprised of shots of the neighbourhood and hidden alleyways to accompany the song about lost love and a broken heart. Doran will make her firstever appearance at this year’s North by Northeast Festival (NXNE) at The Silver Dollar, Wednesday, June 17 at 8 p.m. The festival attracts as many as 350,000 people. This year marks its 21st anniversary. “It’s really exciting to be playing at a festival of this magnitude,” she said. Billed as one of the most
anticipated summer music events in Canada, NXNE brings together big names and local talent June 17 to 21. Toronto, said Doran, “is a really great city to be involved in the arts.” She describes her musical style as a little bit self-depricating on stage. She’s not afraid to share her triumphs and tribulations through her music. Her influences include singer-songwriters Fiest and Sarah Harmer and the band Crooked House Road.
