OPINION Long city election campaigns aren’t as terrible as one may think /4

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s been a homecoming of sorts for Book City, its staff and customers. The independent bookseller recently opened its doors officially without fanfare in Bloor West Village. The bookstore has re-opened two years after leaving the neighbourhood just two doors down from where it was situated originally, between Windermere and Willard avenues.

“It’s been bonkers,” manager Sarah Ramsey told The Villager. “We’ve been busy from open to close ever since we opened. The reception has been so warm and welcoming. Everyone has had a kind word. We’re thrilled to be here. We wanted to make sure this neighbourhood had a bookstore.” Book City seized the opportunity to return to the Bloor West Village retail strip after Chapters closed its doors in February. The Runnymede Theatre-turned bookstore had become a fixture at the corner of Runnymede Road and Bloor Street West during its 15 years in business. Junction Craft Brewing’s Doug Pengelly, left, and Tom Paterson show off their ales available in the LCBO, the Brakeman’s and Conductor’s. Together with David Hayes they started the brewery at 90 Cawthra Ave. in 2011, and each week brew eight to 12 unique beers which are available on site Thursday through Sunday. At right, Tina Schoenwetter brews the day’s batch.

Brew gives nod to neighbourhood history

Junction Craft Brewing to introduce new brew at Session Toronto beer festival this weekend LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Once the longtime home to the Canada Bread Factory, three years ago, the Junction’s 90 Cawthra Ave. was transformed into the Junction Craft Brewing, whose signature brew, Conductor’s Craft Ale, is a nod to the neighbourhood’s manufacturing history and its proximity to the junction of four railway lines. Originally on nearby Vine Avenue, company president Tom Paterson, a High Park resident, and brewmaster Doug Pengelly of Parkdale, relocated to an industrial space where they’ve designed, built and installed a custom brewing system as well as a tap room and retail bottle shop where they sell their beer in five- and 10-ounce glasses, two-litre growlers and 500-millilitre bottles. They are also familiar faces at regular events they host at the brewery as well as at beer festivals such as the upcoming Session Toronto Craft Beer Festival 2014 at Yonge-Dundas Square, which takes place Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. “We set this brewery up to do innovative events as a way to get one-off brews our there,” Pengelly said. “With two different kettles, I can make four different brews in one day in about the same time other breweries make one. Our retail store

has 11 different brews on tap.” When one runs out, they’ve got another to replace it. The business partners, who initially met while they both worked in the restaurant industry, will be introducing a new brew at Session Toronto, inspired by iconic rollercoaster designer Werner Stengel of Germany, a nod to Pegelly’s passion for rollercoasters. Stengel was instrumental in designing the first modern looping coaster, the “Revolution” at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. “He’s pretty hardcore. He’s my inspiration,” said Pengelly during a conversation at the brewery. “He’s my rockstar.” Without divulging too much of his recipe, Pengelly said the Session brew will combine the tastes of India Pale Ale and German Hops. “We like to be at places where we can showcase what we do,” Paterson said. Paterson and Pengelly first connected when Paterson was the owner of The Paddock Tavern on Bathurst Street, a space he restored to its original 1940s jazz cocktail glory days. Its menu was comprised of imported and Ontario craft beers, one of which was Saint Andrew’s Vienna Lager, brewed by Pengelly, who delivered it himself. Paterson vowed then to go into business with

Pengelly and told him as much. “I told him I’d call him up one day,” Paterson said. Pengelly didn’t hold his breath. “I thought, ‘Yeah, sure, buddy,” he said. “Brewing is a profession

that people think, ‘Wow, that must be exciting, fascinating.’ It is, but it’s always a lot of hard work.” Pengelly has been brewing since 1989; first at home and then professionally since about 1995. He went

Staff photo/MARY GAUDET

Doug Pengelly started brewing at home in 1989.

to brewing school in California and worked at Upper Canada Brewery. “I’m the kind of person who likes to know how things work,” he said. Paterson spent more than 25 years in the restaurant industry. He had plans to open a hotel on College Street. It took him a couple of years to transition from restaurant to brewery. “It’s not an easy thing to untangle from (the restaurant business),” he said. It helped that he knew the sales people, drivers and owners of virtually all the breweries in Ontario. “I knew how the system worked and what I wanted to see from a brewery.” Pengally’s philosophy is, if you can’t drink three beers at one time, what’s the point in making them. That’s why Junction Craft Brewing beer tends to be lower in alcohol. Flavour is the focus. Pengally can take credit for designing and building The Junctioncraft Hopback, which has been specifically configured to infuse flavour and aroma into Conductor’s Craft Ale. “I’ve been told people like to go back to the Conductor as their last drink,” Paterson said.

ffordable housing in Toronto Centre. Improving opportunities for youth in Etobicoke North. Hospital mergers in Scarborough-Guildwood. Helping immigrants transition smoothly in Toronto. Accessibility in Parkdale-High Park. Should the city walk away from the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB)? These were just a few of the issues we put to provincial candidates leading up to tonight’s provincial election. So many more issues were raised throughout the campaign with those hoping to fill seats in the Ontario legislature – during debates, at your front door, or on the streets. Regardless of how you voted – our view or how you’re intending to vote – remaining politically engaged the results are tallied is far Affect change after more important. every day with We, the electorate, more often than not engage only during an active voice election campaign – when it’s exciting to do so. Rarely do we continue that engagement between elections. This reality is unfortunate. Change is made every day, when residents across the city (and the province) continue to push what is important to them. Granted, not everything makes it to the top of a growing list of issues, but not demanding better of our politicians certainly doesn’t change a thing. Health care, education, jobs, the economy – these are big ticket items that impact the entire province, but it’s the local issues like decisions at the OMB that impact a community and really makes a difference in the everyday lives of Torontonians. After the dust settles, and another provincial government is elected, it is time for residents to continue to push on those important issues. Send letters to your newly elected or re-minted MPP, attend town halls, join a residents’ association, bring your neighbours together to fight for something important. Do something. That way, when it’s time to head to the polls once again, you know that you’ve at least tried to make a difference.

A long municipal campaign is good for voters

N

early six months into Toronto’s marathon mayoral race, leading candidate Olivia Chow has presented a novel idea: cut six months off the race, and let things get rolling on Canada Day. It’s nothing that we haven’t heard before. Toronto elects a mayor like nobody else, with a campaign period starting on Jan. 2 and continuing until late October. If there’s high interest in the position that year – whether for a lack of incumbent or, as in the case this year, a polarizing one – voters can be subjected to news clips, debates, op-ed pieces and now clever YouTube videos with a foot in all four seasons. It’s expensive and daunting and sometimes a little boring. Well, maybe not that last. But Chow suggests that it is all a bit much – that there is nothing that

david nickle the city can be said in 10 months that can’t also be said in four. Chow does have a point. But it’s hard to say that a tiresome and lengthy debate about the future of our city is particularly harmful to that future. The fact is that while the campaign period runs a year, in times of complacency – the elections before the second terms of former mayors Mel Lastman and David Miller come to mind – the campaigns don’t really run that long at all. There was certainly some hand-wringing in 2006, when Miller gamely defended his mayoralty against city councillor Jane Pitfield and lawyer Stephen LeDrew, but that race didn’t really get going until the summer.

And in 2000, Lastman barely bothered to run a campaign, as only the late Tooker Gomberg ran against him. But in years where the choice is less clear, our long campaign period offers advantages to voters that might be easy to overlook. First, it allows us to meet the candidates – and the candidates to meet us. A good mayoral candidate will start making the rounds of community groups early and often, both for the purpose of fundraising and for the purpose of building a platform. When not abused, this is exceedingly healthy – it keeps municipal government real, in a way that other more distant governments often aren’t. It also allows candidates who may not have the highest profiles a chance to build those, outside the extraordinary advantages of celebrity and wealth that

only a few can bring to the table. Chow, for instance, entered the race with a well-established profile that included a well-timed book tour for her autobiography. John Tory entered the race a popular talk radio host with a long history in Toronto and Ontario politics. Rob Ford’s an incumbent from a wealthy family. So it’s good to be a Chow or a Tory or even a Ford in a four month campaign: not so much a Karen Stintz or a David Soknacki, who are still, six months in, struggling to build their own profiles. And unless we want to limit our mayoral choices to the rich and famous, it’s not so good to be us either. This is one issue that might be best to let lie. Night at the races raises $62K for St. Joe’s mental health unit Evening dedicated to memory of teen who committed suicide LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com St. Joseph’s Health Centre was the real winner at Woodbine Racetrack last Wednesday. Its second annual St. Joe’s Plate raised more than $62,000 in support of the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. The event’s proceeds will enable the renovation of a lounge and dining area within the unit, creating a ‘home away from home’ feel for clients who require overnight care. Guests at the fundraiser dined on a buffet dinner in a private tent overlooking the racetrack. Races took place every 25 minutes throughout the night. The “out-of-the box” fundraising event brought together as many as 240 people in sup-

port of treatment for mental illness at the west-end healthcare facility. Many were family and friends of Lauren Whelan, for whom the event was dedicated. Whelan, a 19-year-old university student, struggled with depression before taking her own life in January. Whelan, who was born at St. Joe’s, was known for her sense of humour and passion for helping others. “It exceeded our expectations,” said organizer and Whelan’s aunt, Mary Anne De Monte Whelan. “Everyone was pretty happy. “Lauren was a quiet soul. She was a loving girl,” De Monte Whelan said. “Very smart, very thoughtful. She was an excellent baseball player, an umpire and skier.” A lifelong Bloor West Village

Innovation That Excites

resident, De Monte Whelan wanted to support her local hospital and reached out to her neighbour Roberta Lum, the founder of St. Joe’s Plate. “It was a very successful event. It reached a lot of people,” De Monte Whelan said. “It was important to have a cause that resonated with people. People want to talk about (mental illness).” That’s what the two discovered while raising awareness and selling tickets for the event. “People said, ‘You’re so courageous. Thank you for doing this,’” De Monte Whelan said. “What we learned is, everyone has a story about mental illness. Everyone is affected by it.” Whelan’s family hopes that her story will allow others to come forward, to feel safe, and know that they are not alone. Help is available. >>>from page 1 of its lease, a Chapters Indigo executive said the landlord wanted more money than the company was able to pay. Indigo CEO Heather Reisman admitted at a public meeting Feb. 6, that despite community support, the Chapters Runnymede store had lost money over the years. L a u ra Di Gi ova n n i , a Kingsway area resident, admitted as she browsed at books in a bin outside the store, that there aren’t any bookstores in her neighbourhood and she would visit Chapters upon occasion. “I didn’t even know it had closed,” she confessed. Meanwhile, inside Judith Petrov, browsing the shelves, called Book City’s opening “fantastic.” “When they closed Chapters, I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if Book City opened again?’...“I’m so happy (Book City) is open. I just live down the street.” As for Ramsey, she’s

impressed by the village’s small community atmosphere. It’s not something she has living in the east end, she admitted. “The thing I like about Book City is that it’s a community for readers. We have whip smart customers. We’re really diverse. I love having conversations about books,”

Ramsey said. “We can’t deprive such a great neighbourhood of a bookstore because bookstores – and libraries – are a fundamental part of a good neighbourhood.” Ramsey is not new to Book City – she comes from the Beach store, however, she is new to Bloor West Village.

Drain standing water and use bug spray, advises TPH >>>from page 1 enough to be hospitalized. One in 1,000 people may die, Shapiro said. It’s very difficult to predict just how serious WNV will be in any given year, he said. Symptoms usually develop within two and 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. They can last as long as a few days to a few weeks. While anyone can be infected, the chances of contracting a severe illness are greater as one ages. “The main thing is age. There is no strict cut-off, but it seems to be 55,” said Shapiro. The more severe symptoms increase at 55. Some suggest if you have a suppressed immune system, you may be at greater risk.” One’s chances of being infected are not dependent on age, but rather one’s circumstances. The worst year in the last decade was 2012, with 94 reported cases and one death. Beginning in June to the end of September, Toronto Public Health will be monitoring weekly the 43 traps it has set. Mosquitoes will be sent to the lab for testing, according to Elaine Pacheco, manager of healthy environments at public health. The Canadian Centre for Mosquito Management will be treating 120,000 of the city’s catch basins with larvicide. The larvicide program started June 9. Meanwhile, field operators will monitor standing water within the city.

4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New Roof Shingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how their products should be installed on your house. Your product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions are not followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied. What you should know about roof surface or roof deck preparation: Your roof deck is the structural surface over which your roofing materials are applied. All roof boards and/or plywood must be fastened securely to the rafters, and damaged or rotten wood must be replaced. Your attic should be inspected before the work starts to uncover potential problems. A bad roof surface allows the nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks. What you should know about underlayment: A complete underlay system should be applied before your shingles are installed. There are two types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproof underlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of the roof; in valleys, at dormer sides, around chimneys and around skylights. Water resistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roof area. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situation where a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation: Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and your product warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Venting consists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs intake vents located in the overhang and exhaust vents at the roof peak. A balanced venting system is required; otherwise air will be pulled from your house. An inspection of your attic is essential to present appropriate and complete venting solutions. What you should know about shingle quality: You have many shingle options with regard to style, colour, longevity and price. Estimators should include at least three grades of shingles and inform you of the real expected shingle life. In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longer life expectancy, better quality shingles often provide you with the best value when measured on a cost per year basis. World Cup: catch all the action in Toronto T

he World Cup begins today in Brazil, and fans across Toronto are preparing to wave their flags as they cheer on their favourite teams. Other than being in Brazil for this year’s world championship of soccer, which runs from June 12 to July 13, Toronto is probably the best place in the world for fans to catch the action. And our newspapers and our special World Cup Toronto website at www. insidetoronto.com/worldcupTO are the best places for coverage on the tournament in our city. Here’s how it works: • Enter www.insidetoronto.com/worldcupto and you will see the flags of all 32 teams taking part. Click on the flag of your favourite country. • Now on your country’s site, you can see stories on the best places in the Greater Toronto Area to catch events linked to the

team, stories on the teams, news stories and ultimately viewers’ guides about the World Cup in general. • There are recipes from all 32 countries for those interested in hosting a

party, or just like the idea of trying different foods. Other stories will celebrate the many cultures who enjoy the World Cup. • We have a number of bloggers writing about the

teams they are following. The World Cup starts June 12 with a game between host Brazil and Croatia at 4 p.m. (EST) in Sao Paulo. There are 32 teams taking part in this year’s World Cup, broken up into eight groups of four. After playing each other in group play between June 12 and 26, the top two teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16 which begins June 28. Many Toronto neighbourhoods are known as gathering places for fans of certain countries to watch their teams’ games. In Toronto, these areas include Little Italy, Little Portugal, Koreatown, Corso Italia, and Greektown on the Danforth to name a few. one for Toronto fans, with seven games slated over the Saturday and Sunday – many of them featuring teams with large fan bases in the city. Greece will be in action on noon Saturday against Colombia, which should mean thousands of fans along Danforth Avenue between Jones and Chester. Italy also takes on England at 6 p.m. on Saturday, which will mean an exciting night along College Street and St. Clair Avenue West. Other games this Saturday are Uruguay against Costa Rica at 3 p.m.; and Ivory Coast against Japan at 9 p.m. On Sunday, Switzerland takes on Ecuador at noon, France plays Honduras at 3 p.m. and Argentina meets Bosnia-Herzegovina at 6 p.m. For a complete World Cup schedule, visit us at bit.ly/1pjObTK

Torontonians will feel as though they’ve been transported to Spain without even having to leave the city as the cobblestone alleyways of King Street are transformed into the Spanish streetscape. Campo Viejo Wines host a street festival today, boasting authentic Spanish street food and wine, music and live urban art installations. The event, which was also on yesterday, features a fivecourse meal. Dinner seatings are at 6 and 9 p.m. The cost is $75. Another highlight is a collaboration by Madrid artists Okuda and Remed. The street festival takes place at 461 King St. W. (2nd Floor Events) from 5 to 11 p.m. Admission is free.

Family to celebrate Father’s Day with 103-year-old dad ‘Stew’ Mason taught his children the importance of supporting your community

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com When people ask Doug Mason how his father’s doing, he likes to respond with a chuckle: “He’s cranky as ever.” But, that’s a good thing, he says. “If he’s complaining about something, we know he’s OK. We know everything’s great,” said Mason with a laugh. This is understandable given that Mason’s dad, Edward Stewart Mason – “Stew” – is 103 years old. The former owner of Mason’s Hardware at Bloor Street West and Ossington Avenue, Stew turns 104 on Sept. 25. His family is celebrating Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, with a lunch at his retirement home, Christie Gardens, that will bring together his five children, their spouses and six grandchildren. Up until last year, the family had gathered at Mason’s farm house east of Aurora. “It’s gotten too hard on dad to bring him up. It’d take him three days to recover,” Mason said. And so, his family is coming to him. “The beautiful thing is, mentally, he’s still with it,” Mason said. Physically, he is riddled with arthritis. However, it is Stew’s optimism, according to daughter, Ella Barrick, that can be attributed to his longevity. “My father is an optimist. For him, even though he’s had a lot of struggles, he was always convinced there would always be a better tomorrow, that ‘this too, shall pass,’” she said. Barrick says she can’t believe the changes her father has seen over his century-plus life. “He was born into a world where people travelled by horse and buggy and now people are

trying to get to Mars,” she told The Villager. Mason calls his father, “a survivor.” In part because Stew started a business during the Great Depression, Mason’s Hardware, in 1931. Stew was a ham radio operator by the age of 14 and got into repairing signal equipment for the railway. “Dad took over that business and expanded it and it became a hardware store,” Mason said. He was a member and onetime president (1946-’47) of the Bloor Businessmen’s Association, a forerunner for the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Area. The association hosted several community events, including a carnival and picnic. Mason and his siblings grew up above the hardware store before the family moved to Willard Avenue. Their parents met through a church youth group before marrying on June 28, 1939. His wife Jean passed away in 1993. Growing up, Stew attended Essex Public School and Central Tech High. Later, he managed teams in the Dovercourt Baseball League for many years. He was a talented woodworker, who built two sailboats and taught his children how to sail.

Barrick said she learned from her father by example. She and her siblings learned that, “Any job worth doing is worth doing well.” Her brother said their dad believed “Your word was your bond.” Everything was done on a handshake,” Mason said. “You valued your word. You kept your promises. That was something we all learned.” They also learned the importance of supporting one’s community – whether by making a financial contribution or by volunteering. “He still does this,” Mason said. Stew was a member of the Scout Group Committee and the Board of Managers at Runnymede Presbyterian Church. He has been a member of Runnymede church for more than five decades. “He liked music. He sang in the church choir until he was over 100,” Mason said fondly of his father. Barrick and her father play crib. In fact, he has taken great pleasure in beating her for the past two weeks in a row, she said. Both agree he’s been a very good father with Mason adding he has a “tremendous sense of humour.”

Humberside Collegiate won the OFSAA triple-A girls soccer championship with an amazing undefeated season to improve upon last year’s bronze medal.

Humberside CI wins OFSAA girls soccer title NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Humberside Collegiate Institute’s senior girls soccer team capped off a dominating year with a provincial championship on Saturday in Thunder Bay, improving upon last year’s bronze medal. Playing at the triple-A level in the Ontario Federation of Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship tournament, the Huskies basically steamrolled through the playoff round (three lopsided wins) after cruising through the preliminary round (three wins and one tie). This was on the heels of a dominant season in its Toronto District School Board (TDSB) league, following up a 5-0 regular season record with four straight playoff wins en route to both its south division championship as well as the TDSB triple-A city championship – all the while conceding just one goal. The Huskies won the gold medal game at Fort William Stadium 3-0 over St. Michael High School from Niagara Falls, breaking open a scoreless draw at the half. Soraya El-houni had two goals while Jenny Wolever added a single for the Huskies. The Huskies won the semifinal game over St. Roch CSS from Brampton 4-0 (Erin Locke, Alex Korroros, Talia

Merino-Sierra and Soraya El-houni); and the quarterfinal game over North York’s Senator O’Connor 3-0 (Jenny Wolever 2, Suzy Purdy). “We played really hard in that semifinal game and then they came out kind of flat in the finals,” said Joanne Loewen, the head of Girls’ Health and Physical Education at Humberside Collegiate and the team coach. They were still dominant, she said, but with no goals to show for it at the half. “We scored within the first minute of the second half and we didn’t look back from that point on,” she said. In the preliminary round, the Huskies earned three wins (2-1 over St. Michael CSS from Bolton, 3-1 over Bishop Ryan CSS from Hannon and 6-2 over host St. Ignatius HS) and one tie (1-1 vs. Parkside CI from St. Thomas). Loewen had a lot of praise for her players which can basically be summed up by her first few words: “they are an amazing group of girls ...” The strength of the team, she said, is not in its star power but that “there’s just so much depth.” She did, however, single out Wolever, despite being outsized by most of her opponents, as “a dominant player ... she’s a game changer.” Other than that, she said “I’ve got a lot of girls that are

hockey players ... they play rep hockey. And they had to give up their soccer careers for hockey. But this team allows them to continue to play soccer.” The preliminary round actually stands out against the grain with Humberside giving up five goals in four games (including their only tie of the season), but, with no disrespect intended to the opposition, it was also strategic. In such a tournament format (seven games in three days), it’s no secret that successful teams, such as Humberside, will use players strategically during the preliminary round to be better prepared during the do-or-die playoff round. “By the time we got through round robin, we were very well rested,” assured Loewen. High school sports are cyclical with seniors graduating every year, but Loewen feels a particularly strong Grade 11 cohort should keep the school competitive. Players are: Jenny Wolever, Erin Locke, Christina Wo l o s z c z u k , C a r o l i n e Serjeant, Sabrina Hempel, Miriam Yosie, Zoe Georgilis, Alex Korroros, Talia MerinoSierra, Suzy Purdy, Rachel Shepherd, Sarah Hill, Annika Engholm, Emilia Silv, Soraya El-houni, Lauren Galek, Jackson Bennett, Sarah Ryner Lauren DiFelice and Bryn Powell.
