T
he city is on edge. Sunday’s mass murder at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida, has put Toronto on high alert. That’s evident by Monday’s quick response by Toronto police to reports of a masked man walking around the University of Toronto’s St. George campus that the safety of the city and its citizens is of paramount importance. Dozens of Emergency Task Force officers descended on the campus, cordoning off roads searching each building, weapons drawn, in hopes of preventing a tragedy. Was there proof something as heinous as what happened in Orlando could happen here, in broad daylight? No. But the potenour view tial threat existed and that was enough. attack that killed 49 people Toronto in outThe enjoying a night of dancing and drinks at the gay club reminds solidarity us – once again – that hate hangs with all over us and lives can be tragically altered, and ended, in an instant. While Toronto police came up empty in their search for the “suspicious person,” reporting such suspicious activity to the authorities is something each and every one of us can do to ensure the safety of ourselves and our fellow Torontonians. We don’t want to live in fear, but we need to be vigilant to continue to live in peace. As Toronto continues celebrating its first-ever Pride Month, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the wake of Sunday’s shootings. “Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.” The Pride parade this year will be dedicated to the memory of the Pulse victims. The parade, which kicks off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in the deadly attack. Pride is working with Toronto police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month. The city is on edge, but it’s full of pride: for its citizens, its acceptance, and its sense of freedom.

Need to go further in eradicating homophobia It was to be a nice little holiday in California: joining my wife at the end of a west-coast business junket to stay with dear old friends in Burbank, meet some of her Los Angeles-area family that hadn’t made it up for the wedding, enjoy some sun-drenched Southern California chill after not having seen each other for a couple of weeks. A good holiday: the kind that celebrates loving relationships – reaffirming old ties, cementing new ones, along the mad freeway system that seems to be the spine of Los Angeles County. On Sunday, early, we watched a bigger spine crack. In Orlando, Florida, more than 100 people were gunned down in a gay nightclub on Saturday night by Omar Mateen in what first seemed an act of terrible hate but now it seems was an act of deliberate terror. And just down the
david nickle the city highway from us, in Santa Monica, police arrested an Indiana man with a truck full of guns and the stated intention of using them at Los Angeles’ Gay Pride parade. At this point, no word whether the planned attack was one of terror or hate. Details. The suspect, who’d driven in from Indiana, meant to do harm to gay and lesbian and transsexual people. Armed like that, he likely meant to kill them. That was very close – I’ll be honest, close enough that it rattled us. But we didn’t have to be here in Burbank to feel that way. It’s close all around. When we get back to Toronto later this week, that same threat – the low, cretinous bigotry that casts itself against the light of unsanctified love (forgive
me, today, that florid metaphor) – will be pervasive. We’re in a city where a sizeable portion of the city has objected strongly enough to a curriculum promoting understanding of gay and lesbian sex that they would consider withdrawing their children from classes. Just a few years ago, we elected a mayor whose homophobia prevented him from attending Pride events and inspired him to fight when the Rainbow Flag flew over City Hall during the Sochi Olympics. We’re getting better in some ways. At the top levels, we’re no longer burdened with hateful leadership: the new Mayor John Tory, the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau don’t pander to that vile id. Kathleen Wynne has spent a career, in part, defending against it. We’re a good place. But really, so is the United States. Same-sex marriage is lawful. There
is nothing wrong and very much right with a boy meeting a boy at the Pulse nightclub and exchanging a deep and hopeful kiss. It ought not bring a death sentence. U.S. President Barack Obama laid it out very clearly. The shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando were an act of hate. They were an act of terror. Homophobia, that bromide that has kept many scowling bigots in dinner-table conversation for decades, has inspired the worst mass-shooting in American history. It is something that can no longer be tolerated, even in those quiet and awful conversations. If we are to take Daesh seriously, we must also take homophobes seriously. Omar Mateen has shown us. Design renderings of a bridge Metrolinx wants to construct to replace the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. The provincial transit planning agency will launch an Environmental Assessment for the project in late January.
Davenport MPP reads petition in Legislature aimed at Metrolinx’s plan for rail crossing LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Nine Davenport community groups banded together to collect as many as 1,500 signatures for a petition that calls on the Ontario government and provincial transit agency Metrolinx to meet a set of criteria for the proposed Davenport Diamond Grade Separation project. The coalition of groups, including BIG, the Bloordale Business Improvement Area, Bloordale Community Improvement Association, Davenport Village Community Association, DIGIN, Friends of the West Toronto Railpath, How We Live In Cities, Junction Triangle Rail Committee, and Options for Davenport, supported by local politicians, delivered the petition to Davenport MPP Cristina Martins, who read the document in the legislature on Thursday, June 9. “My presentation of the petition is an example of my ongoing commitment to ensure that the community’s concerns are heard,” Martins said. “I will continue to advocate for my constituents to make sure that this project results in the best possible outcome for all Davenport residents.” “Honoured” to represent Davenport at Queen’s Park, Martins said she is proud that the nine community members joined forces to create the petition. “The petition is a strong
showing from our community and I would hope that Metrolinx will listen and act on what our community is calling for,” Davenport Councillor Ana Bailão told The Villager in an email statement. Metrolinx is planning to remove the Davenport rail crossing and is proposing to build an estimated 8.5 metre high bridge over it so that CP freight trains won’t interfere with GO trains on the Barrie corridor. The bridge would be built from Bloor Street West in the south to just north of Davenport Road. Among the requirements the community groups are calling for in the petition are: developing a comprehensive vision that includes a design competition; addressing noise, vibration, and safety issues and concerns; creating a multimodal station at Bloor Street West; establishing cycling and walking connections throughout as well as connections to the West Toronto Railpath, the Green Line, and an elevated connection to Earlscourt Park; and providing the community with a specific date that the corridor will be electrified. The project will impact the Davenport neighbourhood for the next century, Bailão pointed out. “Through advocacy, research, and hard work, our community has come together and presented a real and achievable vision for this project,” she said. “I encourage Metrolinx and the prov-
ince to follow the lead of the Davenport community in truly creating a city building project that benefits all communities along the corridor – our community deserves no less.” In an open letter to Metrolinx, the community groups stressed that they are not opposed to and support the expansion of public transit across Toronto and the GTA. “However, when this project was announced, we feel that our community was robbed of the opportunity to consider the risks, benefits, and opportunities between a bridge, tunnel, or trench,” the letter says. The proposed overpass would be built mere metres from homes, businesses and paerks, Options for Davenport spokesperson Sam Barbieri said. “Not surprisingly, the people who live here are concerned about noise, diesel pollution, safety, and the visual impact that such an imposing structure will have on our established neighbourhood,” Barbieri said in a statement. “Our community has come together to put forward a series of reasonable requests relating to these issues. Meeting these requirements is the very least the province and Metrolinx can do for our community.” Kevin Putnam of the Junction Triangle Rail Committee said that the community is seeking the “best possible design, an architectural gem that elevates the community not just the trains.”

The Revue Cinema’s Extraordinary Women series celebrates Hildegard of Bingen LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com
T
he Revue Cinema’s latest installment of its Extraordinary Women series features 12th century nun and mystic Hildegard of Bingen, who wrote about everything from theology to sexuality, botany to beer making. Coinciding with the summer solstice, the event includes the documentary ‘In the Symphony of the World: A Portrait of Hildegard of Bingen,’ Sunday at 3:30 p.m., presented by not-for-profit Back Lane Studios (http:// backlanestudios.ca). There will be an expert panel following the screening, which will explore aspects of Hildegard’s life and times while answering questions. Author Teri Degler, who has written about women mystics and creativity; Rebecca Golding, a medieval art and medical manuscript specialist, who will explore some of the images that accompany Hildegard’s writings; Isabelle Cochelin, an associate history professor at the University of Toronto, who is fascinated by medieval monastic life; and vocalist Krystina Lewicki, who has explored a range of medieval music, will sit on the panel. Lewicki, a Junction-area resident, will introduce the program by performing several of this extraordinary woman’s compositions. Hildegard was a visionary, composer, abbess, student of

‘Ordo Virtutum.’ “I immediately felt a strong connection to the soaring vocals and melismatic passages for textual and musical expression,” Lewicki said. Lewicki will perform four short selections from the Hildegard’s cycle of 70 songs, known as the Celestial Harmonies, which delve into the themes of divine love, divine wisdom, holy spirit giving life and
greening power of nature through the Virgin. Hildegard was “an extraordinarily gifted woman in visions, medicine, politics and music,” Lewicki said. “She did not let anyone or anything stand in her way because of her pure vision, which she said came from God. However, Hildegard can be appreciated on many levels of spirituality and one doesn’t even have to be Catholic or Christian,” Lewicki told The Villager. “I myself have been a Buddhist for years – at the Riwoche Temple in the Junction – and I still find many aspects of her teachings seem to relate to that tradition.” Music has played a role in Lewicki’s life since the age of nine. As a child she learned the accordion and studied piano and voice as an undergrad. For the past 15 years, Lewicki has been teaching singing while performing with the Hildegard Project, the Bellamusica Chamber Ensemble and the Toronto Opera Repertoire, among a host of others. Tickets to the Extraordinary Women event at the Revue, 400 Roncesvalles Ave., are $13 in advance or $15 at the door. St. Cecilia students raise funds for Fort McMurray community Students at St. Cecilia Catholic School have raised more than $1,000 in support of the Fort McMurray community following the devastating wildfires. This month, the school collected funds to help rebuild after the fire forced residents to evacuate and caused widespread damage. They did so through a Civvies Day where students were asked to bring in a Loonie. Also, the kids wore red and white to represent Canada and the Red Cross and made donations of at least a dollar. During Civvies Day, the sale of Jumbo Freezies also raised money. As part of the Evelyn
Avenue and Annette Streetarea school’s annual fun fair, there was a fundraising booth set up by Grade 6 students Rachel H., Ella W., Ciara R., who can also be credited for all the fundraising activities for Fort McMurray. This year’s fun fair, which took place last Thursday, featured a midway tent, magicians, and a dunk tank where students could dunk their teachers. Food vendors included, Pizza Pizza, the Mad Mexican, the Pita Pit and a first-ever beer tent.

Put ‘conditions’ in place if shelter goes ahead >>>from page 1 Clair from Gunn’s Road to Jane; there are no (support) services in the area. We need to look at areas where there are services.” The Runnymede location would not be suitable for helping homeless men integrate into the community, Nunziata added. Gord Tanner, project director of Transition and Change Management for the Shelter, Support and Housing Administration division, explained there are homeless men in both wards and the city gets calls from residents and businesses about people hanging out on the train corridor, at Walmart, and at Home Depot where they sleep in the outdoor sheds. There are no shelters west of Caledonia Road, he pointed out. “It’s important to keep people in their community, close to family and friends,” Tanner said. “In the winter of 2015, four people froze to death. Since then, we’ve been looking for more shelters.
We’re in the process of opening four more.” Between January 2011 and January 2015, the average nightly shelter occupancy increased by 11 per cent, leading many of the city’s 59 shelters to operate at more than 90 per cent capacity. A report unanimously approved by council last year indicated as many as 15 new shelters would be needed over the next five years to alleviate the pressure on existing ones. A city staff report recommending 731 Runnymede Rd. as a shelter location will go to the Community Development and Recreation Committee on Thursday, June 23. It will then be put to a vote at city council’s July 12, 13, and 14 meeting. Residents are invited to make deputations at the committee meeting. St. Paul’s West Councillor Joe Mihevic attended the June 13 meeting and spoke of his experience navigating the process of opening shelters in his ward, one of which is 50 metres from where he lives.
Because of the proximity to his home and his children’s day care, Mihevic said he got to know some of the men. “They’re your uncle, your friend. Many of them have jobs, but they can’t pull it together for first and last month’s rent,” he said. When residents called for Doucette’s position on the proposed shelter, the councillor said she believes a shelter is necessary for the men in the community. “We have homeless people in this neighbourhood,” she pointed out. “If Councillor Nunziata and I vote against this shelter there’s a good chance it will still pass at council because that is the history, but we can work to put conditions in place for the shelter.” Ward 13 resident Betty Zukorsky, who lives a couple of blocks from the Goodwill site, told The Villager she is torn over the issue. “I wish I had a firm thought on it. Part of me thinks we need shelters. I’d rather have

Toronto Pride parade dedicated to Orlando shooting victims JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
early hours on Sunday morning. “We are shocked and saddened by this horrible act,” said Aaron GlynWilliams, co-chair of Pride Toronto’s Board of Directors, in a statement. “By dedicating the pinnacle of Toronto’s Pride Month celebration to our brothers and sisters in Orlando, we are telling the world that we will not be silenced or intimidated. We will not respond to hate with hate. We will mourn and hold these beau-
In the face of Sunday’s mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Pride Toronto is stepping forward and honouring the 49 people who lost their lives to a rampaging gunman. Pride is dedicating this year’s Pride Parade to the victims of the shooting after 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire in Pulse in the
tiful family members in our hearts, as we continue to fight violence and discrimination against our community.” Reading of names The parade, which will kick off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in
Mateen’s deadly attack. In the meantime, Pride is working with Toronto Police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month. Pride has been wary of adding a uniformed presence to the festivities given that many in the LGBTQ community have had strained relationships with the police and have felt marginalized by law enforcement. Despite any such concerns, Pride
Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the face of hatred following Sunday’s shootings. “Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.”

Wildlife centre helps capture one the High Park capybaras LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation department, with help from the Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC), and volunteers, was able to capture one of the High Park capybaras last Sunday night. “Over the weekend, staff secured the area of the park that we knew the capybara was frequenting and after observing its pattern and
behaviour over the weekend, we set a trap where we knew it would be,” a parks and recreation department spokesperson tweeted around noon Monday. Partner on the lam Meanwhile, the capybara’s partner is still on the lam from the High Park zoo. Those who helped bring the capybara home were coined ‘Team
Capybara,’ according to TWC. TWC’s rescue team leader Andrew Wight, rescue staff member Stacey Freeman and several rescue volunteers joined Team Capybara in High Park over the weekend where they helped determine the best course of action for capture, which included a pre-dawn visit Sunday morning. That evening, one of the TWC’s trap was set and camouflaged in the park’s lush vegetation. “The size and type of trap, as well
as how and when it is set, makes all the difference,” Wight said in a statement. “It was also really helpful that city staff and some residents kept people away from the area during the trapping.” Mere minutes after the trap was set, the capybara was caught. TWC’s rescue team has offered to help catch the other capybara once it has been spotted and determined where it is hiding.
The capybara capture was a departure for the TWC. The creature is not typically one of the hundreds of wildlife species that call the Greater Toronto Area home. Last week, TWC representatives helped rescue two baby falcons and reunited them with their family high on a rooftop. Last summer, the TWC helped rescue 115 ducks and ducklings after an oil spill in Etobicoke’s Mimico Creek.
