Music, culture and art unite at annual Junction solstice festival Fifth annual event runs from noon to midnight LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Junction Business Improvement Area (BIA) is hosting its annual street party in celebration of the longest day of the year. The fifth annual Junction Summer Solstice Festival, which takes place Saturday from noon until midnight, is the first festival of the summer season in the city and celebrates the eclectic neighbourhood that is the Junction. “It gets bigger and bigger every year,” Jessica Myers, the Junction BIA’s executive director, told The Villager. D u n d a s St r e e t We s t remains open, yet the festival takes over the curbside lane, which makes room for more buskers, musicians, larger audiences and more room for “businesses to do something creative.” The festival, a kick-off to summer, takes place while everyone is still in the city, Myers said. “The kids are out of school and families haven’t left for the cottage yet,” she said. The festival promises something for everyone.

More than 80 local businesses will participate offering sales and promotions; there will be live music, urban culture, art shows, craft and design workshops, open houses and featured menus. Visitors are invited to take part in health activities, interactive performances and demos while enjoying shows by roaming artists, buskers and cirque performers. “There will be really great music, including a traditional native dance, art installations and acrobatics,” Meyers said, adding there will be lots of children’s activities and extended patios. More than 30 restaurants and cafes will be providing exclusive Summer Solstice menus as well. In support of Bike Month, there will be a free bike clinic operating throughout the day with lots of bicycle parking. Visitors are encouraged to bike or take the TTC to the festival. From noon until midnight there will be a variety of family friendly shows and workshops, as well as a Ferris Wheel. Stick around to take part in the Junction Jubilee – from the creator of the Junction Flea, enjoy live music as well as a late night projection show that takes place at the train platform, on Dundas Street West, just east of Pacific Avenue.

nformation overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes disseminating the truth from the fiction a difficult task. When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray? There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned. Dubbed JournalismIS, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability. Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in our print edition our view of The Bloor West Villager and other newspapers, on television and ‘News is the online touting the benefits of good journalism. lifeblood of We’re great at telling other people’s stories, but as journalists we’re democracy’ not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do. That’s why the team at The Villager and all other Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign. The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do. We need to demonstrate the power behind good journalism in engaging the public and fostering a stronger connection between individuals and the neighbourhoods in which they live. “News is the lifeblood of democracy,” said Mary Agnes Walsh, campaign spokesperson and Winnipeg Free Press reporter at the JournalismIS launch in Toronto last week. “Our campaign is aimed at initiating a wider conversation about the value of journalism and what we all need to do to support a robust journalistic culture in Canadian society.” So, we invite our readers to tell us what they look for in good journalism. Does that come across in the pages of The Bloor West Villager and online at www.insidetoronto.com? Where would you make suggestions for improvement? Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Mayor John Tory did?

M

aybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practise of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on

david nickle the city Tuesday. The regulations, yet unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier this year at the Toronto Police Services Board, a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today Mayor John Tory will make a forthright attempt to stop carding once and for all, bringing a motion to the Toronto Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking by a gathering of highly influ-

ential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto journalist Desmond Cole describing in detail the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. It’s a wonder the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true police value carding as an intelligencegathering strategy. The information gleaned may well contribute to ongoing investigations or simply give police a better map of the communities they’re assigned to protect. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto and it is unlikely that police enforcement,

or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. Holding all that in balance, it is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals, having seen that example play out at their doorstep, seem bound to learn that lesson themselves. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. Front yard parking pad gets approved for Willard Avenue

Runnymede school hoping to raise $125K by end of June for playground

LAURA DASILVA ldasilva@insidetoronto.com

Runnymede Junior and Senior Public School is about to celebrate a milestone birthday and so its students, teachers and parent council members are saving up to buy a big gift. The elementary school’s playground is getting a major overhaul scheduled to coincide with Runnymede’s 100th anniversary next year. The Toronto Distr ict School Board is in the midst of digging up a portion of the playground in preparation for the installation of artificial, sustainable turf. “This was a great opportunity to build on that, to rejig the front yard for our Grade 4 to 8 students,” Principal Amelia Dennis told The Villager. “This all started with some of our parent council members coming into my office with sketches.” Those sketches were cre-

Neighbours on Willard Avenue are coughing up nearly $2,000 each to legalize an adjoined parking pad they thought was on the up-and-up. Louie Papanicolopoulos and Stephen Wong, who live at 442 and 444 Willard Ave. respectively, purchased their homes after reviewing real estate listings and seller’s reports advertising front yard parking. Wong claims dishonesty and miscommunication on the sellers’ behalf are forcing he and his neighbour to park on their already congested street and pay out-of-pocket for what he calls “someone else’s actions.” To legalize his parking pad, Wong has already paid a $400 application fee and $800 for an appeal. Etobicoke and York coun-

cillors approved the existing parking pads against city recommendations at their community council meeting Tuesday, June 16. Though Papanicolopoulos and Wong will now be able to pull into their parking spots, they’ll each have to pay out an additional $685 for enforcement fees. In a report, staff advised against the pads as there are street permits available, and the front yards don’t meet the landscaping requirements. However, councillors instead voted unanimously in favour of Ward 13 Councillor Sarah Doucette’s motion, which allowed the parking pad but required the residents to comply with the city’s municipal parking code. A c c o r d i n g t o Papanicolopoulos, he and Wong own the only homes on Willard that do not have dedicated driveways or access

to laneway parking. Since the driveway between the two houses is too narrow to fit a vehicle through, there is no way to take advantage of any backyard parking. “ We h a v e a b a b y,” Papanicolopoulos said. “Sometimes were not able to park near our house. In the winter it’s especially challenging since sidewalks aren’t taken care of properly. It becomes a fall risk for my wife and myself carrying the baby.” Polls were conducted with nearby residents regarding the two parking spaces and more than 90 per cent of neighbors were in favour of the legalization. Doucette said real estate agents, lawyers and sellers need to practice full disclosure when it comes to parking availability.

ated from a wish list parent council members had for a playground that would reflect all students’ play modes. Now, there is an architectural drawing that depicts the variety of new and innovative play spaces and structures – one students of all ages clamour around and are excited to see come to fruition, said parent council members Sarah Frame and Sharon Zupancic, who along with Erin Meana, are co-chairs of

the centennial playground fundraising project. The estimated budget of the playground is $225,000. The goal is to raise $125,000 by the end of June. Already, a fundraising pub night for parents with additional leftover parent council funds plus a parent donation drive currently underway has raised more than $60,000.

Taking responsibility for her actions, Wilson appealed to the alleged thief. “I really believe they will not hang onto the data. winning team,” she said, adding that no matter what their challenges, they always looked for the positives in life. The footage includes a trip to India where Colton received stem cell surgery. It was Colton who inspired the documentary because he said he wanted to give back, particularly for the treatment he received in India. Wilson said her son loved sports, particularly watching hockey with his dad. Her daughter, Carling, she called

“a beautiful teacher.” “We learned a lot from her,” she said. Recovering the laptop is paramount to police, Det. Jason Albanese said. “We are very hopeful someone will call us,” he said during the press conference. “We are actively canvassing in the area.” The criminal aspect to this situation is secondary right now, said the detective. The priority is returning the laptop to Wilson and her family. The family is offering a $1,000 reward for the laptop’s recovery. Someone who saw the story in the media has also agreed to double the reward money. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1300 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

MakerKids moving to larger space in Bloor West Village LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com MakerKids is on the move. The workshop space, which provides hands-on after-school programs, parties and summer camps in 3D printing, electronics, woodworking, coding, sewing, crafting and Minecraft programs, is relocating from its Roncesvalles Village spot to a

much larger, long-term space in Bloor West Village. The move came about for a variety of reasons, MakerKids CEO Jennifer Turliuk told The Villager. “Our programs have started to sell out – we wanted a larger space with a longer lease,” she said. Many MakerKids participants are already coming from the Bloor West neigh-

bourhood. “We wanted to be closer to them. We wanted to be in a spot where there were lots of cool shops where kids hang out,” Turliuk said. Even though MakerKids will have a new home, it will still have the same instructors and “same great programs that people have grown to love,” she said. While MakerKids is in the

midst of moving, programs continue at the Roncesvalles location until June 20; the new ones begin in Bloor West June 29. MakerKids’ new digs are on Bloor Street West, near Jane Street, above the Pizza Pizza, in the former Art Works Art School space. It’s an upper level that boasts lots of natural light with skylights, better parking options and more

usable space. The kids who are signed up for this summer’s camps will be the first to experience the new space. There are a few spots left in the camps, Turliuk said. help decorate MakerKids is seeking opinions from its participants for help in decorating the new

space. If yours is one of the ideas chosen, your name will be etched onto a plaque, which will hang in the new MakerKids home. Email info@makerkids. com to submit drawings and ideas. The deadline is Saturday, June 20.

In the future, how should the City’s waste be managed? How should we manage our remaining garbage even after reuse, recycling, and composting? The City is developing a Long Term Waste Management Strategy for Toronto that will provide a framework for solid waste management policy decision over the next 30 to 50 years. Our goal is to find solutions that are cost-effective, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable.

Homeowners of this house in the Runnymede Road and Bloor Street West area are frustrated with Toronto Hydro for installing a new hydro pole in the middle of their property.

Placement of pole has to do with hydro standards: official >>>from page 1 reposition the pole just six feet to the right so that it sits between the Ankenmann’s and their neighbour’s house. “It’s been a frustrating six months. We loved living in Bloor West Village and just spent a lot of money renovating the interior of the house,” Shirley Ankenmann told The Villager. “It breaks our heart to see what has happened to the exterior.” Toronto Hydro spokesperson Tori Gass confirmed that the electrical company’s customer operations have been in touch with the Ankenmanns on an ongoing basis since December. “We’re still looking into what can be done to make this better. The placement of electrical equipment can be quite technical,” Gass said. “It has to do with new standards in place. It has to do with the

tension in the wires to ensure power will be reliable.” Not only has the pole destroyed their front lawn, but the couples’ property value too, Ankenmann said. She and her husband purchased the house, in the Runnymede Road and Bloor Street West area, three-and-a-half years ago after living abroad for 10 years. They wanted to settle in Toronto, in their ‘forever home.’ “We completely understand and accept there will be a pole, we just want to ask if they can consider a different location,” Ankennman said. They continue to follow up with Toronto Hydro every couple of weeks in the hopes of getting an answer. Discussion is ongoing about the pole, Gass said. “Nothing is finalized,” she said. The city has been brought

into the conversation, Gass said, because there is also a large tree stump adjacent to the pole that needs removing. The tree had to be cut down following the ice storm in December 2013, Ankenmann said. “The decision on this has not been decided. It’s not as easy as looking at an aesthetic or site line, unfortunately,” Gass said. “In this area, there are older, narrow streets. There’s not a lot of real estate to work with. There’s a lot that goes into figuring out a location for a pole.” As far as Ankenmann is concerned, “It’s affecting our curb appeal. We do plan on being here forever,” she said. The TTC is promising more improvements to off-peak transit service. At a press conference Monday, June 15 TTC chair Josh Colle announced 52 bus and streetcar routes, which also includes the city’s four rapid transit lines, will have 10 minutes or better service outside of the rush hour period, starting in the fall. Details about the plans are vague, but the result promised by Colle will be shorter waits for transit, especially outside of the downtown core.

Inspired by other cities’ experiences, the Toronto 360 Wayfinding Strategy, a.k.a TO360 includes two sizes of “info totems”, descriptive pillars depicting areas of interest and local maps, as well as “finger posts” which literally point the way to local landmarks. The new signage is found in the Entertainment District, St. Lawrence and

most prominently in the Financial District, whose Business Improvement Area helped with planning and partial funding of the $800,000 pilot project. TO HOST OPEN HOUSE wMETROLINX
