The Oasis focuses on development, growth of seniors LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Sheena Schaffer was all smiles as she made her way through the newly renovated third floor of the New Horizons Tower, a retirement community at the corner of Bloor West and Dufferin streets, last Tuesday afternoon. It was the first time she was able to set eyes on her new home and Schaffer had nothing, but praise for the space. “So far, it’s too perfect,” she told The Villager, relying on her walker to get around. “It’s

Eleven Division police, alongside their colleagues across the city, are working to become more neighbourly. Officers officially launched an initiative coined Project Neighbour hood Safety today, which will impact the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) buildings in the Dundas Street West and Scarlett Road-area. “Officers will focus on those complexes on a daily basis, starting June 20,” 11 Division Community Response Unit Sgt. Chad Nicolle said. The area was chosen as a focus due to several violent crime incidences in recent years. Officers will be working in conjunction with TCHC staff.

It’s wonderful – beautiful.” Schaffer was one of several residents, community members and staff who got a tour of The Oasis at New Horizons Tower, during a grand opening event, June 11. The Oasis is designed for people who are in the early to middle stages of dementia, who would benefit from a social environment, explained Sylvia Teasdale, director of resident services. Metrolinx updates progress on electrification plans RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Work on a provincial study examining how to electrify a future rail connection to the airport is proceeding on schedule, said a Metrolinx spokesperson Monday. Karen Pitre said the provincial transit planning agency is making progress on a provincial
environmental assessment (EA) examining how to best convert the Union-Pearson (UP) Express air rail link from diesel to electric. Currently under construction, the link will be the city’s first fixed rapid transit connection between Pearson International Airport and Union Station when it comes online as of the 2015 Toronto Pan >>>PROVINCIAL, page 5

Electronic hospital records help improve patient care at St. Joe’s
The Student School earns platinum status for strong green focus LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Bloor West Village’s The Student School has achieved the highest level of Eco School certification: platinum. The alternative school on Evelyn Crescent is dedicated to environmental justice, sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint with support from its ‘Green Team.’ One-hundred students strong, the Student School for grades 11 and 12 makes the environment central to its curriculum, according to Beth Tomlinson, who teaches environmental studies, among other subjects. In a learning atmosphere where teachers and students work together in mutual respect, the school’s commitment to all things environmental includes sustainable waste diversion through composting, recycling and re-using, energy reduction, school-wide waste audits and growing its own food with a “vegequarium” and a salad greens greenhouse, among a long list of others. To achieve platinum eco school status, a school must undergo a six-part assessment, Tomlinson explained. The Student School demonstrated excellence in encouraging environmental leadership and teamwork, energy conservation, waste minimization, and having “vibrant” school grounds while committing to a healthy and safe school. The platinum EcoSchools certification was introduced in the 2008-09 school year. Schools that declare their intention to apply for platinum undergo two audits from a third-party auditor, one every September and every

May, Tomlinson said. “More and more schools are starting to do the process,” she said. “We’ve been platinum for three years, but each year is a fresh start.” In the first year, 36 Toronto District School Board (TDSB) schools applied for platinum certification; 16 of those achieved the highest level. “The certification audit, like a summative task, is meant to be an opportunity for learning and for acknowledging effort – not a test to be dreaded,” said the TDSB in a statement.

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com New software designed by St. Joseph’s Health Centre staff enables patients in the hospital’s Mental Health Short Stay Unit to be more involved in their treatment plan. The Electronic Recovery Care Plan (eRCP) eliminates the need for “confusing” and “complicated” paper record trails while engages patients directly in their care plan, according to its creators, Dr. Kelly Driver, medical lead for the Mental Health Short Stay Unit and Dr. David Gotlieb, medical lead of the Emergency Psychiatry team. “I was frustrated by the paper and pen model,” Driver admitted. “I’d notice redundancies. The handwriting was sub-optimal. I approached Dr. Gotlieb and said, ‘Can you put this on the computer?’” Patients say they are “delighted” to have a copy of their own care plan, which outlines their diagnosis, the history of their treatment and recommendations doctors have made for future care. “It’s been very useful. Patients are delighted to have a copy of their plan, something legible and comprehensive,” Driver said. The eRCP doesn’t require any special software, only a browser. Gotlieb, who has worked at St. Joe’s since 2000, conceived of the idea and came up with a working prototype within a two-month period. “We wanted it to be userfriendly. We did it with zero budget,” said Gotlieb, who has

Because there is no green bin pick-up at The Student School, the students have created their own compost program. They built their own compost bin in which discarded fruits and vegetables are put. The compost material is used on the school’s gardens. The school, located inside the Western Technical Commercial School building, doesn’t have its own cafeteria, but rather a kitchen. “We bought our own cutlery and plates from GoodWill and we wash them every day,” Tomlinson said. After conducting their own waste audit, students learned their biggest culprit was paper towels. So, the school now uses dish towels, which are collected and washed by members of the Green Team.

a background in computer science. “It was nice because there was no bureaucracy involved.” The eRCP is the first of its kind – no other hospital has this, Gotlieb said. His and Driver’s efforts have been attracting attention beyond the St. Joe’s community. The two hosted a workshop to describe the eRCP system at the Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in San Francisco last month. The eRCP essentially tells a patient’s story. Each document outlines the possible risks to the patient,
for example, suicidal, homicidal or unsafe sex behaviour – “any risk would be identified,” Driver said. The document includes diagnosis, medication(s), addiction issues, doctors’ recommendations and treatment goals, such as maintaining steady employment. Five out of six patients who are admitted to the Mental Health Short Stay Unit are suicidal, Driver said. The length of stay varies depending on the needs of each patient, however, the average stay is four days, she said. The eRCP has special addi-

Pan Ams a great forerunner for World Youth Athletics bid
Write us
T
he City of Toronto wants to host the 2017 World Youth Championships in Athletics. The event features the world’s top track and field athletes aged 17 and under. Right now, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal have all shown an interest in hosting the event, and are in the process of submitting their bids to Athletics Canada. In December, Athletics Canada decides which Canadian city will have the right to hold the Games. The Canadian bid goes to the International Association of Athletics Federation in late 2014, at which time it will decide the host country. Some 170 countries participate and it’s estimated there will be 1,400 athletes and 600 team officials in attendance. Canada last hosted in 2003 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Athletics Canada estimated the championships generated some $37 million in benefits to Quebec, with $28 million of that being in Sherbrooke. Toronto’s hosting would come on the heels of the 2015 our view Pan Am/Parapan Games. Having hosted the Pan Am Volunteer for Games two years earlier will us in an excellent posithe 2015 Pan put tion to host the World Youth Championships. Am Games One of the key parts of the Pan Am Games in 2015 is the legacy it leaves Toronto in athletic infrastructure and experience. We will already have an army of trained volunteers who can be activated for any number of international community events in Toronto. The legacy of that volunteer force goes beyond athletic events, though. Their enthusiasm, pride and experience will make them a powerful force. Perhaps those volunteers become the cornerstones of a new civic ambassadors program that spreads the message of Toronto the Good on a continuous basis. Real people who are spreading the good word about Toronto and area is more valuable in terms of international credibility than figureheads who simply do business elsewhere or serve in a political capacity. Toronto’s bid for the World Youth Championships is being led by the Toronto Sports Council and Athletics Ontario. We urge residents to show their support. A great way to do so is to take part in the 2015 Pan Am Games – either as a volunteer or enthusiastic supporter.

Might be time for Mayor Rob Ford to consider hiring personal bodyguard For years, Doug Ford has been saying that his brother Mayor Rob Ford needs a bodyguard. The events of last weekend, in which Mayor Ford was doused with a frozen drink at a public event, might be considered supporting evidence for that idea. One shouldn’t take such a dousing too lightly. As a 27-year-old yoga instructor has learned to her peril, allegedly tossing a drink in a gentleman’s face fits within the legal definition of criminal assault. The cup could as easily have been filled with a more harmful substance – or it could have been a knife, or a gun. It wasn’t this time. And the mayor and his nonsecurity staff reportedly proved more than capable of chasing the woman
david nickle the city down, apprehending her and turning her over to the criminal justice system. It’s understandable that the mayor might have been reluctant to include an actual bodyguard on his staff until now. It paints an unfriendly picture of a mayor who prides himself on personally dealing with constituents’ problems. But the time might have come to reconsider that. During his recent troubles, the mayor has availed himself of city hall security – the department that is on hand to look out for the security of City Hall itself and the safety of the public – to ensure his own
comfort and safety as he moves about the building. And while so far he’s been hit by nothing worse than a frozen beverage and impertinent questions, it would be fair to suppose that he’s raised more ire than your typical mayor. Still, a bodyguard added to Mayor Ford’s staff might be more than he needs. One addition that might be helpful, however, would be another one that his brother Doug, as well as his deputy mayor Doug Holyday have also been suggesting for many years: a driver. They raised that matter most vociferously in 2012, when Mayor Ford was photographed reading speaking notes while driving along the Gardiner Expressway. If he’d had a
driver then, Mayor Ford could have studied his notes riding shotgun. A driver might also be helpful on some of the mayor’s other issues — specifically, his frequent tardiness when attending public events. And a driver might also provide the level of protection that our mayor demonstrably needs, while being prepared for various emergencies, medical and otherwise, to lend a hand. If nothing else, the driver might provide another pair of eyes to warn the mayor away from the various dangers and traps our city presents, before he encounters them himself.

action plan Ford said he and Jones would do just that, implementing an “action plan” for what he termed “those allowed to slip through the cracks.” “It’s no secret I’ve got a special place in my heart for people who live in TCHC,” Ford said. “I spent 13 years trying to improve their living conditions from one side of the city to
another.” Ford said he and Jones had worked out a “plan of action” in a meeting recently. However, neither Ford nor Jones would elaborate on the “plan of action”. Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan said TCHC shouldn’t need an action plan. “The LeSage report was a work plan — it was adopted by the previous board, but it was abandoned by the new CEO,” said Vaughan. “There are more than a dozen citations in (Crean’s report), which says the situation for seniors in TCHC is getting worse, because of the turmoil (Ford) created and the new board having a new mandate, which is to go after arrears. For the mayor to say that he was unaware of the situation? It’s his fingerprints all over.”

>>>from page 1 American Games. While the study won’t be completed until 2014, preliminary design work on UP is continuing on potential industrial locations along the Kitchener GO rail corridor for transformer and switching stations, said Pitre. “We’re making progress and we are at the point where we have enough information for people to understand the nature of project,” said Pitre, Metrolinx’s executive director for electrification. “We have to deal with hydro and utility providers, as well as the airport,” she said during a public drop-in session about the project at Metro Hall June 10. “We’re dealing with all those fronts and I think we’re doing a pretty good job moving things forward.” The update was part of four meetings Metrolinx has organized for UP consultations, which will run as an express business class train service on the GO Kitchener rail
corridor. Other events were scheduled for Mimico, Mount Dennis and Mississauga near the airport. Davenport city councillor Ana Bailão attended the Metro Hall event, where enlarged presentation slides were set up with technical information regarding the project and several Metrolinx officials were on hand to speak in more detail about the work. Bailão, who supported a city council resolution last year for the immediate electrification of the air rail link, said she was disappointed no meetings were planned this time for Bloor West, where residential opposition to UP is high. “For many years people have called for electrification so I think there’s a step in the right direction with the EA,” Bailão said. “However, the next step is taking a long time to happen and I am certainly hoping sooner rather than later the provincial government comes
out with a firm date for building, rather than planning, electrification.” Pitre promised more public consultations, but cautioned it would be difficult to visit every neighbourhood along the rail corridor as the EA continues. “I’m pretty sure we’re going to make more people unhappy depending on what neighbourhood we pick, but we’re trying to spread it out to make sure people don’t have to travel too far,” Pitre said. No date has been set for electric conversion of UP, and the provincial ministry of transportation has been firm on initially running diesel trains along the link. Metrolinx has listed electrification as a priority transit project with 2017 a preferred date for completion. No final costs for the project will be known until the results of the EA are known.

Mayor Rob Ford said he’ll guarantee the problems identified with the Toronto Community Housing Corporations’s (TCHC) process for evicting seniors will be dealt with as promptly as possible. “I promise you we are not going to leave one person behind,” Ford said at an afternoon press conference earlier this month. “Will everything be fixed tomorrow? Probably not. But I give you my word, I guarantee it will be fixed.” Ford made the comments in the company of Eugene Jones, the chief executive officer of TCHC, a day after Toronto’s Ombudsman Fiona Crean released a critical report into the way the TCHC deals with seniors whose rents are in arrears. Crean found TCHC moves too quickly to evict elderly and vulnerable tenants because of rent arrears or alleged changes
in income status. In particular, she found TCHC had ignored recommendations from a public inquiry by Justice Patrick LeSage into the eviction of elderly resident Al Gosling. Gosling died homeless five months after he was evicted. A week earlier, Ford took credit for turning TCHC around, after he dissolved the board and fired the CEO in 2011. The new board eventually brought in Jones to clean things up.

Oasis marks new era in providing seniors enhanced support >>>from page 1 seven staff members called “care companions” and two full-time team leaders. The Oasis, which is exclusively dedicated to serving seniors who are struggling with the challenges of everyday living, which have been heightened by memory loss, has adopted a philosophy of care that’s called the Eden Alternative, founded by
American Dr. Bill Thomas. The philosophy is based on the core belief that aging should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline, said Teasdale, who recently returned from Oklahoma where she and colleagues received training in the method. The Eden Alternative identifies seven “domains” that are crucial
for everyone’s well-being, including connectedness – to people, to events, to nature and to belongings; meaning – to have hope, to feel valued and to have a purpose in life; security – feeling safe and free from fear; and autonomy – having the freedom to make our own choices. “We’ll take a companionship approach to care,”
Teasdale said during a formal presentation, which was followed by the tour. Staff will help residents create as much of a homelife as possible. “We’ll mirror what you would enjoy in your home,” she said. “All new staff has been hired for this floor. Everyone exhibits a real love and passion for working with elders.” CEO of both New Horizons Tower and Christie Gardens’ Grace Sweatman called the Oasis “a place of personal growth,” in her address to community members, residents and staff. Ken Sweatman, New Horizons Tower administrator, says the Oasis marks the beginning of a new era in providing seniors enhanced support. “Oasis residents will benefit from the opportunity to

develop new relationships, learn new skills and renew old ones, while enjoying a worry-free neighbourhood,”
he said.

Featuring a “modest” inyear surplus of $713,000, the approved budget was the product of the most extensive community consultation process ever undertaken by the TCDSB. ttc train puts it in park for good w1970s The last subway train from a fleet dating back to the 1970s made its final journey in the TTC system last week. The H-5 trains, which were manufactured by Hawker-Siddeley, were characterized by orange and brown seats and yellow interior doors. When it began service in 1977, they were the first subway cars to have air conditioning. At noon hour on June 14, the final H-5 train left Wilson Station on the Yonge-UniversitySpadina line. Finding Bessarion Bessarion station was the inspiration for a humorous web video released last week. Finding Bessarion focuses on the journey of filmmaker and sketch comedian Jeremy Woodcock to find the mysterious station located on the Sheppard line which is likely the TTC’s leastvisited subway destination. “I am going to Bessarion Station to prove to myself it exists,” says Woodcock

When it was announced that Metrolinx was planning to run trucks to a construction staging area near Sorauren Park, residents were particularly concerned about trucks using the small, tight streets of Rideau, Macdonell and Wabash avenues. It took a great deal of work on the part of the community, Parkdale-High Park Councilor Gord Perks and his staff, but meetings and conversations with Metrolinx facilitated a new plan for truck traffic. “Because the community stood up (Metrolinx) found another way to deal with it and that is a good result for
the whole Roncesvalles and Macdonell community,” Perks said. In a letter to the community Metrolinx said, “We have been able to secure alternate truck haul routes to enter and exit the rail corridor at Queen Street West and Sudbury Street. We will also have a corridor exit route through Shirley Street. As a result, we will not be using Rideau, Macdonell and Wabash avenues as truck access routes.” Metrolinx will still use 40 Wabash Avenue, a vacant parcel of land adjacent to Sorauren Park, to store materials and equipment
as originally planned. “Construction trucks will enter and exit the storage site from the corridor side and not in front of homes on these streets,” the letter reads. “We also continue to explore other access points which we will require for subsequent phases of the project.” Metrolinx requires access on the southwest side of the rail corridor to complete grading and signal work related to the Georgetown South (GTS) Project and the Union Pearson Express. The work should be complete by 2014. – Erin Hatfield

Fast-paced storytelling sets the stage at Fringe LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Wi t h g re a t r i s k c o m e s great reward – that’s local playwright-actor-director Alexandra Rambusch’s philosophy, especially when it comes to her latest work, The Adventures of a Professional Corpse, premiering at this year’s Fringe Festival, Friday, July 5. Rambusch’s play, whose story focuses on the lucrative business of dying, promises to be “fast-paced, bare-boned fun.” “When it works, it works like nothing else,” Rambusch said of watching a production come to life on stage. T h e A d v e n t u re s o f a Professional Corpse is inspired by the popular pulp fiction magazines of the 1930s and
‘40s, whose contemporary cultural influences range from graphic novels to fashion and slang. It is the story of James, a devoted son, who quits his post-secondary education to save his family’s farm. After ingesting a medicinal concoction that allows him to fake his own death, the kid soon learns there’s a healthy living to be made from death. Rambusch promises a wild ride that takes audiences from a 4H club to a country club. Inspired by her experience at Fringe last year developing, co-writing and directing her work, Spychasers, Rambucsh decided to start her own p r o d u c t i o n c o m p a n y, Bent Spoons Productions. Comprised of 10 actors, The Adventures of a Professional

Alexandra Rambusch’s play, The Adventures of a Professional Corpse, about the lucrative business of dying, debuts at the Toronto Fringe Festival, Friday, July 5.
Corpse is the company’s first offering. It is inspired by the serial from the 1940s Weird Tales, written by H. BedfordJones, known as the “King of
the Pulps,” who was born in Napanee, Ontario. “The exciting thing about the Fringe is that it gives you the opportunity to try new
things,” Rambusch said. “It’s got to be something that moves fast, the audience needs to be engaged.” One of the challenges is, the lack of storage space for props and stage sets. Rambusch said she is dealing with only a two-and-a-half by three-foot space. Her set is comprised of just three ladders and four curtains. She admits it took her quite awhile to find material for The Adventures of a Professional Corpse. “I wrote it for a few months and then read it with actors and then rewrote it,” she said. “When you’re writing for theatre, you’re writing in action.” The New York City-born Rambusch developed a love for theatre in university when she got her first
taste of acting. The onetime general manager of the National Dance Institute in New York fell in love with a man from Toronto and has lived in the west end of the city since arriving here in 2006, near Bloor West and Jane streets. “It’s been great for me,” she said. No stranger to Toronto, her parents met at the University of Toronto, so she would visit with her mother, who came to see her best friends on an annual basis. T h e A d v e n t u re s o f a Professional Corpse starts July 5 at the Tarragon Mainspace, 30 Bridgeman Ave. (north of Dupont Street, east of Bathurst Street). All tickets are $10 at the door.

Sportsmanship important for young athletes For over 80 years, parents have trusted our camp to provide their girls with the best camp experience available. Memories made around a camp fire, challenges met on a canoe trip and friendships forged in a shared cabin; these are the experiences that stay with a girl for life www.ywcatoronto.org/camptapawingo Contact Liz Greenway,Camp Director lgreenway@ywcatoronto.org
During the heat of competition, it can be challenging to be a good sport, particularly when the goal is to win. However, sportsmanship is something that should be a priority for players, parents and coaches. Here are some of the ways to be fine sportsmen. Abide by the rules of the game: Rules are there for a reason, to promote fairness and to keep play organized and in check. A team cannot work effectively if players have their own agendas. Practice anger management: Anger can take over when an official makes a questionable call or a
teammate makes an error. But arguing with officials or teammates can get in the way of camaraderie and good performance. Be a team player: Players have different skill levels and abilities. There will always be the players that excel and those who may not be the MVP. Players should not “hog” the ball or make attempts to exclude others from the game. Enabling everyone to have their chance to shine is a good way to be a good teammate and friend. Offer words of encouragement: Even the star player can have a bad game once in awhile. A
true sportsman will not tease others when they are down. Teammates should always be encouraging of one another. React well to a loss: There will be winners and losers in competition. Bursting into tears or jeering at the winning team reflects badly on you and your teammates. It may not feel good to lose, but be able to share in the joy of the other team and congratulate them on their success. Use a loss as a learning experience that shows you what you and your teammates need to work on going forward. – MS

One-woman show earns Roncesvalles playwright Dora Mavor nomination LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Roncesvalles Village actorplaywright Melody Johnson’s one-woman show Miss Caledonia has garnered the thespian not one, but two Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations – for outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance in the general theatre division. Reached by phone on Wednesday, June 12, Johnson admitted the recognition felt “really good.” based on a true story Miss Caledonia is based on the true story of Johnson’s mother, a beauty pageant winner in the 1950s. Johnson stars as her mother, Penny Ann Douglas, a young, optimistic farm girl desperate to escape the stall-cleaning, hay-bailing drudgery of 1950s life with dreams of becoming a movie star.

Melody Johnson, a Roncesvalles Village playwright, is nominated for two Dora Mavor Awards for her one-woman show, ‘Miss Caledonia’.
“My mother would laugh,” said Johnson with a chuckle.
“She’d say, ‘there’s no story there – lots of people grew up on a farm.’” Johnson begs to differ. Her mother loved movie stars and noticed lots of starlets had won beauty pageants as a way of escaping farm life – actress-singer-dancer Debbie Reynolds, ABC news anchor Diane Sawyer and actress Halle Berry are just three examples of former beauty queens, said Johnson. “My mom decided to hop on the trend. We still have the gowns and the sashes. At that time, you had to have a talent. We have her tap shoes and batons too,” she said. Johnson has always been intrigued by her mom’s experience.
“The great thing is to be acknowledged by your peers,” she said. “That’s the greatest honour. A distinguished group of people do the nominating.” The awards, celebrating extraordinary Toronto talent in the performing arts, will take place Monday, June 24 at the Bluma Appel Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. This year’s ceremony fea-
tures 13 new award categories bringing the total to 48 Dora Awards. The Doras are named for Dora Mavor Moore (18881979), a well-loved teacher and director, who helped establish Canadian professional theatre in the 1930s and 1940s. Recognizing the outstanding achievements in Toronto’s performing arts industry, the Doras honour

The process of surrendering your unwanted guns, Saunders said, is really “quite simple.” “All you have to do is contact Toronto police at 416-808-2222 and a police officer will arrive at your address and will take that firearm,” he said, cautioning the public against bringing their firearms in to a police
The Toronto Police Service has extended its Pixels for Pistols gun amnesty program until June 30. Originally slated to run until June 17, the gunsfor-cameras program was extended by nearly two weeks as a result of continued community interest – with more than 100 firearms and 4,000 rounds of ammunition turned over to police since June 3. “And we’re not done yet,” Deputy Chief Mark Saunders said Monday at a press conference announcing the Pixels for Pistols extension. “What we’re doing today is we’re launching another appeal and we’re hoping that members of the com-

station or Henry’s store. “This program is designed primarily for those honest folks who have firearms legally but, for whatever reasons, no longer want to have those firearms in their
possession and are willing to render those firearms over to our amnesty program. By doing so, you will guarantee that that firearm will not get within the criminal element.” Of the more than 100 firearms so far surrendered to police since June 3, Bruce Finn – an officer with the integrated Gun and Gang Task Force said some look to be army surplus or historical firearms brought back as souvenirs from the war (some dating back as far as the early 1900s), while others are non-restricted hunting rifles and shotguns. Like Saunders, Finn cautioned residents against keeping such guns in their possession unless safely stored. “It’s very important to take advantage of this program,” he said at Monday’s press conference. “Even if people want to keep them as a family heirloom – whether a grandfather has brought
it back or owned it – sometimes (these firearms) unexpectedly they get misplaced or lost during a move, and then they could possibly turn up in a crime scene. Let’s
just get them off the street, out of the way, and not have it tracked back to you.”
