Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz, announced that a Toronto-based company would receive more than $850,000 in funding to develop 3D scanning technology. The MP made the announcement on behalf of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains last Friday, at Matter and Form, located near Dufferin and Queen streets. Founded in 2013 to develop 3D scanning technology, Matter and Form Inc. first created a 3D scanner that provides users the power to capture 3D data from small objects and create computer models, which can then be printed as three-dimensional objects. This technology is mostly used in animation and engineering. The company’s cloud-based platform gives users the power to capture 3D data from small objects and create computer models, which can then be printed in 3D. Through this latest project, Matter and Form expects to create 12 new jobs while maintaining eight jobs in the Greater Toronto Area. Visit www.matterandform.net for more information.

U.S. election inspires lawyers to conjure up comedy play Greek myth-based political tragic comedy ‘In Gods We Trust’ supports Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Two of its cast members describe the Fringe Festival play ‘In Gods We Trust’ as an ‘office workplace meets Mount Olympus.’ The latest Fringe Festival offering by the Lactors Studio, a group of lawyers-turned-actors who revel in creating theatre together, was based on an idea by criminal lawyer Satinder Besrai’s husband whom she says is both fascinated and horrified by the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Billed as a political comedy, the play tells the story of ancient Greek gods who, seeking their next adventure, take up residence in Mount Rushmore while the presidential election is underway. Appalled by the antics of presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, the gods gather for an emergency meeting to decide who should become the leader of the U.S.

Lawyers-turned-actors present ‘In Gods We Trust’, a spoof of the U.S. presidential race, at the 2016 Fringe Festival. The first show takes place July 1, 3 p.m., at the Al Green Theatre.

“I hope the main thing is, they have fun and appreciate the political comedy,” actor-lawyer Peter

Hamiwka told The Villager when asked what he hoped audiences would glean from the show.

The reality is, he pointed out, whatever the outcome of the American election, it will affect Canadians while causing “global ripples.” The show debuts at the Al Green Theatre on July 1 at 3 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to the Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program, which provides hot, healthy meals year-round at the Law Society of Upper Canada’s cafeteria to residents in need. Lactors Studio’s debut show ‘Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry’ at the Fringe in 2014 raised $7,000 for the meal program. The cast of ‘In Gods We Trust’, including Hamiwka, a Bloor West Village resident, and Besrai, a Roncesvalles Village resident, met through the Nightwood Theatre’s annual Lawyer Show in which lawyers-turned-actors perform a different Shakespeare play each year. This year, however, was a departure as they presented the musical ‘Guys and Dolls.’

“It seems odd, but (acting) is an extension of being a lawyer,” said Besrai, adding that the two professions require similar skills, like improvisation, performance, and thinking on one’s feet. “I think what we have going for us as lawyers and litigators is, we are used to speaking in public. For me, it’s a total escape.” Photographs for ‘In Gods We Trust’ were taken at the Guild Inn, an historic hotel in the Guildwood neighbourhood of Scarborough. It was once an artists colony and the surrounding Guild Park includes a sculpture garden with ruins of various demolished structures, which made the location ideal for a Greek god story, Hamiwka said. “The show is a mash of very traditional and modern elements,” he said. It takes place on a night close to the election. For further details and tickets, visit http://bit.ly/1tqIfwB

Community hopes for space for children, seniors, services and more >>>from page 1 that all orders of government truly understand this and work together because these opportunities don’t come too often and once it’s sold it’s sold. We can’t allow that to happen without having the needs of the community addressed and have them leading this process.” The site itself has the municipal address of 90 Crotia St., but part of the property fronts Bloor Street West and Dufferin Street. The 7.3 acres to be sold include the area of the former Kent P.S fronting Dufferin Street and a portion of Bloor C.I. As it stands, the students from Bloor C.I and ALPHA II Alternative School are scheduled to relocate to adjacent Brockton High School, currently vacant, by the end of 2018. Money from this sale will go towards retrofit projects in TDSB schools. Brockton will receive $20-million – $12.3 million from the Province

and $7.7 million from the TDSB – for renovations to the building, including a new entrance and lobby with wheelchair accessibility and elevator, new windows, electrical work and a new updated science lab. There was no announcement on how much the province will contribute to fund a proposed community hub. Karen Pitre, the special advisor to the premier on community hubs, noted putting a price tag on the project at this point would be “premature.” The land deemed surplus by the TLC will be developed by the City of Toronto alongside the chosen developer to envision the future of the site. From the city’s perspective they’d like to see a new road, a substantial piece of parkland preserved, as well as create a cohesive connection that promotes easy access to the area through walking and cycling. The TLC will be putting out a

Request For Proposal (RFP) this summer that will include the community’s requests for certain services. The TLC is looking to select a developer by the fall of 2016. Residents at the meeting made it

clear they would like to see a space for childcare, community services that serve seniors and those with disability issues, a theatre or dance space, affordable housing and they requested that the space be flexible

for various functions. “This is a public site, this is ours, why are we giving it away to a developer without having these principles or these things we need guiding the development and making sure when they buy this land they don’t have the impression that they can pave over everything and just build towers,” Bailão told The Villager. “They must understand that there’s a park they have to do, a certain amount of affordable housing, a community hub and all that has an impact on the price of land and the vision they’re going to be proposing and reduces substantially a potential fight at the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board).” Pitre stressed the opportunity the community has to create something special in Ontario and that the province would be looking at “the lessons learned” on this site to help other communities in Ontario going through something similar.

elcome to summer Toronto! It officially arrived on Monday of this week, but judging by our recent hot weather it’s actually been here for awhile. And is there any better place to be in the summer than Toronto? We’ve got it all, as you can see by our Summer In The City feature story in this week’s paper. This coming first weekend of summer sees events such as the Luminato Festival, Taste of Toronto and the beginning of two weekends of top-level youth soccer action with the Robbie tournament. The Robbie International Soccer Tournament celebrates its 50th anniversary OuR ViEW this year, and it has grown from a small event with a few teams in 1967 to City boasts a Scarborough what is now the world’s largest cross-section youth soccer tournament for charity. of events It has raised more than $1.6 million for Cystic Fibrosis Canada in that time. The 50th version of the Robbie will see in excess of 300 teams playing in the festival (for boys and girls teams ages eight to 12) this weekend, and then the competitive tourney (for boys and girls teams 13 to 18) from July 1 to 3. And that’s not all. While Pride Month events have been taking place in Toronto throughout June, things really kick into gear this weekend as Pride Week begins. The week culminates in the Pride Parade July 3, which travels along Church Street from Bloor to Yonge-Dundas Square, but will also include the Trans March July 1 and the Dyke March July 2. Other large city-wide events in the next few weeks include the Honda Indy, which brings in racers and race fans from around the world, starting July 15. The Indy has been a Toronto tradition since 1986. Also, there’s the Toronto Caribbean Carnival starting July 28 and continuing through to the holiday Monday on Aug. 1. From humble beginnings back in 1967, the carnival has grown to become a massive tourist draw for Toronto. But not every event this summer is geared to huge crowds and tourists. There’s no end of community festivals set for our city, and whatever neighbourhood you are in, you will be sure to find something to do this summer in the city.

column

Big discussions, decisions planned for city’s future Next week Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee sits down for the last time before business at city hall winds down for the summer. But don’t expect a lazy, hazy meeting. Indeed, the June 28 gathering of Mayor Tory’s cabinet-like committee could be the most important one of the entire term. On the agenda: • a report revising upwards the cost of the single-stop Scarborough subway, that also sets the city’s transit-building agenda for the next two decades; • another one, looking at revenue tools beyond property taxes to pay for things like that transit plan; • a review of the city’s considerable real estate assets, taken with an eye to maximizing savings and revenues; • and the implementation of the Tenants First plan, to try and put right the city’s considerable portfolio of public housing.

david nickle the city To put it another way: the Executive Committee will be considering some of the most expensive initiatives under consideration by Toronto Council this term, at the same meeting as it examines some of the most ambitious measures to pay for those initiatives. It is not immediately obvious how Mayor Tory and his like-minded Executive Committee members will rise to those two challenges. So far, balancing ambition and reality has been an ungainly exercise for the team. Tory has been anxious to get down to the business of city-building, slow to get to the business of budget-pruning, and brashly confident in his ability to do both. His letter of instruction to the budget committee that met this week illus-

trates this perfectly. He has asked the committee to freeze expenditures for 2017, keep property taxes at or below the inflation rate. Efficiencies are to be found, alternate service delivery (contracting out) is to be considered… but ambitious new programs that form the backbone of Tory’s election-platform mandate are sacrosanct: transit and transportation, housing, and poverty reduction. That mission statement leaves very little room to wiggle – but the wiggle-room increases when the two questions of what we want and how we can afford it are asked and answered on different schedules. The June 28 Executive Committee meeting is a rare confluence, wherein everything is on the table at once. Do we want to build a massively expensive, marginally useful single-stop subway in Scarborough,

knowing that we will then have to consider raising all kinds of levies and taxes in order to afford it? We do need to repair our public housing, and that while other levels of government might offer some help, we’ll have to put up some share of the cost. How? Executive Committee members won’t have to answer all those questions immediately. But they will have to start talking about them in the same breath – in a way that until now mainly the mayor’s critics have done, and that the mayor and his supporters have characterized as simply nay-saying. At some point, the politics has to stop and the governance has to start. Next week, looking hard at both the dream and the problem, is as good a time as any to begin.

about the salon and spa in Bloor West Village. Chatting with Helen Soilis, her stylist and Capucci co-owner (along with Gino Mazzei and Ted Zorzi) one day during one of her appointments, Green told her about the Syrian sponsorship group she and co-chair Barb Willitts had formed. “We try to do two charity events a year,” Soilis told The Villager. “This year, we thought we’d like to do something where we could see

The Roncesvalles Refugee Relief (RRR) group received an injection of $3,000 from a local salon that hosted a fundraiser in its honour by discounting prices for haircuts and colourings – all proceeds from the event went to the charity organization. “I’ve come to Capucci for years,” Joanne Green, co-chair of RRR, said

Trove donates some of Friday’s sales to LGBT Youth Crisis Line In celebration of Pride Toronto, a clothing boutique with stores in Bloor West Village and the Annex will donate 25 per cent of all sales made on Friday, June 24 to the LGBT Youth Crisis Line. The LGBT Youth Line is a peer-to-peer phone, text and chat support service for Ontario queer, trans and questioning youth ages 26 and under. Trove staff will also be distributing Pride stickers and decals to all local business owners and to all customers included in any purchase or

donation. They’ll also hand out rainbow-themed frozen treats at the Bloor West Village store with donations. Trove has long been a supporter of Pride, but is also an “anti-oppressive, safe and inclusive space.” Trove co-owner Carolyn Eby has always displayed a Pride flag in the storefront window of the Bloor West Village location and fought to continue doing so after bouts of vandalism in 2014 and early 2015. The Pride flag was sprayed over with paint while a ‘Be Happy Not Gay’

slur was spray-painted on the store’s back wall. People, Eby said, were shocked to learn of the antigay vandalism plaguing the store. People came in to show their support, Eby said at the time. It inspired the Trove team to continue its support of the LGBT community. Trove’s Pride event will take place between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at 2264 Bloor St. W. and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 791 Bathurst St. Visit Trove.ca or for details about the crisis line, visit youthline.ca – Lisa Rainford
