New TTC sign commemorates Old Mill’s centennial, history

iron and steel

LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com The Old Mill has made a name for itself over the past century as a place to celebrate milestone events, share family dinners and partake in afternoon tea. It has become a fixture on the bank of the Humber River and cemented itself in Toronto residents’ family histories. While many people know of the Old Mill, fewer are familiar with its heritage, said its president Michael Kalmar. “The story of the Old Mill is a wonderful story; it’s a good news story,” said Kalmar at a special reception to commemorate the centennial of the Old Mill, established Aug. 4, 1914. In partnership with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and with support from former Etobicoke-Lakeshore councillor and Liberal MPP Peter Milczyn, The Old Mill unveiled a pictorial tribute to the early history of the Humber Valley and Kingsway area at the Old Mill subway station. “What’s the tie in between the Old Mill and the TTC? Both are important conduits to the area,” said Kalmar during the afternoon reception Wednesday, June 18 that brought together decadeslong staff members for the centennial event. of the east and westbound platforms of the Old Mill subway station, incorporates rare historic photographs and drawings that date back to the 1600s when Huron Indians made their homes on the banks of the Humber River to the early 1900s through the First World War and the Depression era. “A picture tells a 1,000 words,” said Kalmar, who pointed out the Old Mill got its start as a community centre. Its founder, Robert Home Smith, who built the surrounding neighbourhoods, wanted a place where

everyone in the community could come and socialize. Long before the invention of social media or the television, the Old Mill was where residents came to share news of the day, to be entertained and have afternoon tea, Kalmar said. “Really, we’re just custodians of a wonderful tradition that we have to make sure carries on,” he said. Natalie Bauer, director of marketing and events at the Old Mill, chose the photos that make up the words ‘Old Mill’ at its namesake subway station. She said with each

letter, she wanted to tell a story. She began with photographs of the Huron Indians living along the river. She called the project “a great experience.” The TTC’s Chief Customer Officer Chris Upfold said a project such as this one helps the transit commission create links to the communities it serves. “This is a great thing for our customers, a great thing for the TTC. We’re excited to be a part of it,” he said.

orontonians have much to celebrate on Canada Day.

We have a front row seat when it comes to witnessing the amazing cultural diversity on display in our communities. For example, there’s the ongoing World Cup of Soccer, where teams from 32 countries (each with an identifiable fan base in the city), are competing for the privilege of being crowned world champion. You can see the flags flying from homes, businesses and vehicles. You can see people gathered around televisions to watch the games. And you can definitely see and hear the jubilant celebrations when a team secures victory. Canada is a nation of immigrants. And nowhere else is this country’s diversity as visible as it is in Toronto, where nearly half of the population first learned a language other than English at home. We went to a citizenship cereour view mony and got the perspective of a number of new Canadians, includTake time to ing North York’s Clive Townsend, explore your who spoke of the “privilege” citizenship granted him. community In this country, we have much to be thankful for. Rights that we normally take for granted can be harder to secure elsewhere. So in honour of Canada Day, we’d like to throw out a couple of challenges. To the new Canadian: in the coming months, make an effort to find out more about your new community and city and all it has to offer. The summer season is a wonderful time to do this. There are plenty of places, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Centre, the CN Tower or Fort York, to visit and get a sense of the community’s history and characteristics. To the more deeply rooted Torontonian: use your time this summer to attend a couple of cultural events with a goal of finding out more about that particular culture and what it brings to our city. Again, there are plenty of options to choose from, including such festivals as Salsa on St. Clair, Taste of the Danforth, and Scotiabank Caribana. What better way to evolve as a community? As newer immigrants become more comfortable in their new home, and the more deeply-rooted citizens gain a greater understanding of the diverse cultures that make up this city, one of Toronto’s strengths – its multiculturalism – will get even stronger. Happy Canada Day, everyone.

Popular candidates - not original ideas tend to get attention during campaign

R

eally, it is a good thing for a city, every three to four years to have a good long mayoral race. And not just because it’s healthy to change things at the top every once in awhile. Particularly in Toronto’s 10-month marathons, it lets us air out some novel and occasionally useful and far-fetched ideas on how the city ought to be shaped. Often these ideas come from the darnedest places, and that is where they stay. In 2010, for instance, Rocco Rossi suggested that Toronto should have a mechanism for recalling a bad mayor. That was an idea before its time – Rossi didn’t even make it to voting day, his support was so low – but there are probably a binding-petitionsworth of people in Toronto right now who wish they had something like that

david nickle the city over the past year. This year, mayoral candidate David Soknacki is on his way to fulfilling that role. Consistently low in public opinion polls, the former city councillor from Scarborough has been leading when it comes to ideas. His first big idea, to scrap the Scarborough subway and build an LRT in its place, was soon picked up by Olivia Chow. His latest, to ban onstreet parking on arterial roads in the downtown core, hasn’t yet been picked up by anyone. It’s too bad, because the ban would probably do more to make on-road transportation faster and safer than any number of relief subway lines – or at

least the decade of debates and environmental assessments preceding their construction. Bike lanes wouldn’t be the impediment to car traffic that they are now, because they wouldn’t have to deke around onstreet parking spaces and into car lanes. Where bike lanes weren’t appropriate, cars would have at least two lanes in a direction to move, and that would go the same for buses, which might be increased. And pedestrians, not well known for adhering to crosswalks and traffic lights, would have a safer time crossing mid-block than they do lurching out into traffic from between parked cars. It would also tick off numerous small businesses, and a certain number of motorists who’ve gotten used to park-

ing on the streets and don’t like the multi-level parking garages that Soknacki envisions to replace street parking. And those, at least in a mayoral race, are two sleeping bears that no candidate wants to poke. That is why it takes a candidate like Soknacki – who at this point, has no car-commuter, smallbusiness support to lose – to bring the notion forward. It’s a good gamble on his part. If the idea catches on with enough other factions in our balkanized electorate, Soknacki could gain enough support to give him a shot at the prize. And if not, it is a good, radical idea, of the sort that the more established candidates don’t go near. David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column appears Thursdays. Shortcut through Green P lot on Kennedy Avenue to be blocked off to drivers LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

Public Notice 2014 Final Property Tax Bills The City ofToronto has now mailed the final property tax bills for 2014. Property owners are responsible for paying property taxes by the due dates listed below. The final bill is the second of two tax bills mailed this year. The interim tax bill was mailed in January. If you have not received your property tax bill, please contact us to obtain a copy.

Changes are coming to the Green P parking lot at the east end of Bloor West Village this summer. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Sarah Doucette announced these modifications in her latest newsletter to constituents. A project that’s been in the works for more than a year, city staff were first called in to study traffic movement and flow in and around the Green P lot between Kennedy Avenue and Glendonwynne Road, north of Bloor Street West after residents approached the councillor about safety concerns. “People used the Kennedy Avenue lot to get to the (traffic) lights at Glendonwynne and Bloor,” Doucette told The Villager. “It was like a speed trap.” Within the boundaries of Kennedy Avenue, Glendonwynne, Margdon

and Kennedy Park roads, there is a playground – the Kennedy-Margdon Parkette, the Runnymede library and the Runnymede subway station. pedestrian safety “Because of safety concerns of people dashing through (the lot), it was decided to block off one end of the parking lot,” Doucette said. Drivers tend to speed along Kennedy Avenue; Margdon Road through the Green P lot to avoid Bloor Street traffic, explained the councillor. Because of this, the entrance to the Green P lot on Kennedy Avenue will be closed. All traffic will have to enter and exit the lot via Glendonwynne Road. “Residents approached me regarding the speeding of cars and the flow of traffic,” she said. “The decision had to be made, what end of the lot do we block off?” Closing the Kennedy

Avenue entrance will create more parking for pick-up and drop-offs to the subway. Meanwhile, it will create a ‘safe side’ of the sidewalk between the parking lot and the subway – pedestrians will be able to walk along the east side of Kennedy Avenue without any traffic interruptions or concern for turning vehicles. Because of the closure of the entrance on Kennedy Avenue, residents of the street will have to access the traffic lights on Glendonwynne Road via Glenlake Avenue or Colbeck Avenue. “I understand Kennedy Avenue residents’ concerns, I do appreciate them,” Doucette said. The closure is scheduled to take place in August. Meanwhile, the Green P lot at Durie Street and Beresford Avenue is being resurfaced. Will this affect you? Have an opinion on it? Hawker Siddely train, with famous single seat, makes its final trip One of the TTC’s oldest remaining subway trains made one final trip last week. The Hawker Siddelymanufactured class six train made one final run along the Bloor-Danforth line last Friday before being taken out of service for good. First introduced in the late 1980s, The H-6 models were characterized by their brown interiors and orange doors, as well as for having a “privacy seat” which was located away from regular group seating. But they also experienced frequent malfunctions the older they became. In the past, decommissioned TTC trains have been donated to a transit provider in Lagos, Nigeria for service there. This time it will be scrapped for parts.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT continue to experience delays as project contractors struggle to finish the work. The six-stop Toronto York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) is supposed to be completed by 2016, but that may prove difficult should the delays continue. According to a recent board report prepared by TTC CEO Andy Byford, three stations, York University, Steeles West and Hwy 407, are not maintaining a consistent schedule, while Downsview Park and Vaughan Metropolitan Station are also experiencing lesser difficulties. Only Finch West Station is proceeding as planned. “At this time, the progress on these stations poses the most serious schedule challenge to the overall project schedule,” reads Byford’s report.

test for new streetcar wRocky One of the TTC’s new streetcars celebrated a dubious milestone when it was reportedly involved in a traffic accident last week. Pictures from the incident made the rounds on social media showing the streetcar, one of three prototype models currently undergoing road testing. According to witnesses, the streetcar was hit after a Mercedes Benz with a Texas licence plate unsuccessfully attempted to overtake the vehicle as it traveled along Queen Street East, near Coxwell Avenue. No damage was reported. The streetcars will make their official debut Aug. 31 on the 510 Spadina line and over 200 are to be phased in over five years on all routes.

Show proceeds help feed the hungry >>>from page 1 -time filmmaker turned lawyer for being the “brain child” of the whole production. The Bloor West resident sparked on the idea after hearing something a friend said about Seana McKenna (a Stratford Shakespeare Festival veteran actress). “(He said) he’d be willing to watch Seana McKenna in anything, even watching paint dry.” That conversation was the catalyst for Hamiwka and Baker Mason’s Fringe festival offering, which Hamiwka submitted to the Fringe as just a title. Hesitant to divulge too much, Baker Mason and Hamiwka would only say the play is exactly what its title suggests – to the horror of audience members when they find out they are indeed watching (a faux) Seana McKenna watching paint dry. “Then, all hell breaks loose,” Baker Mason said.

Actors in Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry.

Billed as a “hilarious slice of comedic metatheatre,” Watching Seana McKenna Watch Paint Dry takes place at the George Ignatieff Theatre starting July 4 at 8:45 p.m. Proceeds will go to Lawyers Feed The Hungry (www.lawyersfeedthehungry.ca), which feeds the city’s hungry out of the Osgoode Hall cafeteria. The real Seana McKenna has in fact given the play her blessing. Hamiwka hap-

pens to have a client who is McKenna’s neighbour so he wrote a letter to the actress, who wanted to know what colour the paint is. The play is being performed in honour of fellow actor and employment lawyer, the late Randal Telford, who died suddenly before rehearsals began. For details, visit www. fringetoronto.com or call 416-966-1062, ext. 1. Tickets also available at the door.

Improving students’ diets, relationships with police through cooking program NATALIE CHU nchu@insidetoronto.com Officer Candy Graham was a little tired of seeing takeout fast food in the halls of the school she works at. “There were McDonald’s bags everywhere, Graham said. “Life is so fast and so many people don’t know how to cook anymore, especially kids. The school’s resource officer was eager to make a change. With a love for cooking and a little creativity, Graham began the Cooking with Cops program three years ago at Bishop Marrocco/ Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School in partnership with ProAction Cops & Kids Toronto chapter. The school’s resource officer was already running a basketball

program for at-risk male youth. The cooking program, however, drew interest from both males and females at the school. “It’s very popular, she said. “I mean, who doesn’t love food? Graham loves to cook but doesn’t refer to herself as a chef by any means. She said her first challenge was cooking in the school kitchen with more than 10 students between two stoves. “I’m in my uniform and I’m cooking near a hot stove with the kids, the officer said. “It’s a lot of fun. Some of the menu items included: lemon-cranberry scones, mini shepherd’s pies, and one of Graham’s favourites – homemade gnocchi, taught by the wife of one of her 11 Division’s superintendents. In fact, it’s common for Graham to bring in family and friends as

Student Sharlyn Barahona, left, and school resource officer Candy Graham.

“guest chefs. This year, Graham’s sister made an apple crumble pie, a hit amongst the students.

Oftentimes, the students are asked to cook for school events such as the athletic banquet or arts retreat. They’ve done other outreach events too, including feeding the homeless. Each year, the students also host a finale dinner. This year’s meal was held at Thai Chef restaurant on Roncesvalles Avenue. The students were able to tour the kitchen and learn the restaurant’s spring roll recipe, which they later enjoyed. “It was the most authentic Thai food I’ve had, said 16-year-old Sharlyn Barahona, who has been part of Cooking with Cops since it began. For Barahona, meeting twice a week to cook with Graham and other students has helped develop her love for being in the kitchen. She even teaches her mom new

recipes. “I like how much food brings people together and seeing how excited and how happy everyone is. Whether it’s washing dishes or stirring the sauce, or asking who has the salt, she said. Graham said some students have already expressed interest in joining a culinary arts program in the future. She also said she hopes to collaborate with the school’s media arts teacher to create a cookbook of the students’ favourite recipes. “I like the experience it gives the students, plus it teaches them about teamwork, hard work, dedication and commitment, Graham said. “I truly love it.

Free outdoor Sunday yoga Night market B l o o r W e s t V i l l a g e ’s ONETOOTH Activewear hosts free outdoor yoga in High Park Sunday mornings throughout the summer. Initiated last year, the yoga classes attracted as many as 100 people each week and has already generated quite the buzz on social media, according to Chad Wenzel from the local retail store. “According to our RSVPs, more than 130 people have said, ‘I’m in,’” he told The Villager.

The yoga instructors and styles will vary week to week, Wenzel said, yet classes will accommodate yogis of all experience levels, including beginners. Several west-end yoga studios and gyms are donating the talents and skill of their instructors. For the free outdoor yoga in High Park, participants are asked to bring a mat and water. One of the highlights of the Summer Solstice celebration held in the Junction on Saturday was the unveiling of a commemmorative plaque made of old train wheels.

Plaque honouring history of The Junction unveiled at annual Solstice Festival LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

A

s part of its second annual Solstice Festival in celebration of the longest day of the year, the Junction Business Improvement Area (BIA) with support from Metrolinx unveiled a commemorative plaque, Saturday. The plaque, which focuses on the neighbourhood’s architectural heritage and highlights its rich rail heritage, was unveiled at the southeast corner of High Park Avenue and Dundas Street West. The unveiling served to kick-off the first event of the season. The plaque tells the story of the Junction’s early industry and railroads, elements that still remain features of the retail strip. It is the second of a series of plaques explaining the neighboorhood’s history to be installed along Dundas Street West as part of the BIA’s ongoing beautification efforts.

When a discussion about the historical plaque and the need for train wheels came up, it was a natural fit. – Malon Edward, Metrolinx

In keeping with the theme of the Junction’s rail history, Metrolinx donated two train wheels for the plaque, which were transformed into its base, completing the work of art. “A Metrolinx representative attended a BIA meeting last year to find out more about how we could participate in the Junction Solstice Festival, and any other events in the neighbourhood,” said Metrolinx spokesperson Malon Edwards. “When a discussion about the historical plaque and the need for train wheels came up, it was a natural fit.” The project has been in the works since last April. Metrolinx discovered a pair

of retired train wheels in stock and – pun intended, “the ball started rolling from there,” Edwards said. “The BIA and the City of Toronto handled the logistics and chose the location for the plaque,” he said. Once everything was in place, the wheels were picked up by local welder John Mrsic, the nearby Dynamic Iron, who welded the wheels together at his shop, Edwards said. The Junction’s first plaque was installed in 2011 at the corner of Dundas Street West and Pacific Avenue. Each plaque celebrates different aspects of The Junction’s history. The Junction Solstice Festival took place Saturday from noon to midnight and boasted loads of family entertainment, including a ferris wheel, mini train rides, workshops and buskertainment, among a long list of activities and entertainment.

Newest citizens celebrate Canada TOM GODFREY contactus@insidetoronto.com

Regent Park featured speakers, performers, information booths and a refugee walk to raise awareness of the day. El-Farouk Khaki, a Toronto lawyer and downtown resident, said his family fled Tanzania in the 1970s. They were among thousands of East Indians who claimed asylum in Canada and the U.K. after being forced from their homeland. The UN estimates there were about 10.4 million refugees of concern last year. Another 4.8 million are looked after in some 60 camps in the Middle East. Canada accepts about 15,000 refugees yearly. More than half are selected abroad. The others are privately sponsored or arrive in Canada seeking protection.

ormer Jamaican soldier Clive Townsend proudly saluted Citizenship Judge Karen McMillan as he was sworn in as a new Canadian with 103 others just days before our country’s 147th birthday Tuesday, July 1. “It is a privilege to become a Canadian,” said the North York resident after the ceremony. “I have been waiting a long time for this dream to come true.” An ecstatic Townsend, 50, said his first task is to register to vote. “I went to vote in the provincial election (June 12) and I could not because I am not Canadian,” he said. “I will be first in line to vote in the mayoral election in October.” Townsend moved to Toronto from Jamaica in 1995 and plans to sponsor family members to come to Canada. “This document gives me privilege,” Townsend said of his Certificate of Citizenship. “I have been waiting for a long time to become a citizen of this great country.” He said this Canada Day will be “even more special” as he is a citizen. Kulwant Kaur, and her son, Sukhjinder, 20, also of North York, were all smiles as they recited their Oaths of Citizenship. “My son will have a great future here with more opportunities than I had,” Kaur beamed. “We are very excited about our lives in Canada.” She moved here with her family from India about 20 years ago and never took out citizenship. “I am so very proud,” she said. “Now we can vote and have better job opportunities.” Many of the new citizens fled violent or war-torn countries and were granted asylum in Canada. Lara, 26, who lives in downtown Toronto and did not want her last name used, said her parents fled Lebanon five years ago due

recently moved from Etobicoke to Mississauga, praised Canada as a great place to raise a family. “This is a wonderful country to be a citizen of,” said Collins, who came from Jamaica. “Being a citizen means that I now have a voice and can vote.” Judge McMillan urged the new Canadians to vote and exercise their respon-

sibilities. “Take pride in the Oath and always defend the Canadian way of life,” she said. Ceremony guest Rana Khan, of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), reminded the new Canadians that June 20 was declared World Refugee Day, to commemorate the plight of refugees.“You

have picked a great country to call home,” Khan said. “Toronto and Canada have always been generous hosts for refugees fleeing from conflicts around the world.” She said events were planned throughout Canada to mark the special day. A celebration at Toronto’s Daniel’s Spectrum in

Staying cool when it’s hot outside It’s been a long, cold winter and we’ve waited months for the warm weather to arrive. Finally, summer’s here. And just as winter’s extreme cold affects those who are vulnerable, so does summer’s extreme heat. The warmer weather affects vulnerable populations more quickly than others and for these reasons, it’s important to make sure that your loved ones are safe. Younger children, babies and seniors are at particular risk when the temperatures rise. When summer temperatures soar beyond safe levels, the City of Toronto will issue a “Heat Alert.” These advisories are reminders for people – particularly those who are especially vulnerable, to take special care when the mercury soars. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre monitors these alerts and are always available to answer questions and provide support wherever needed. Those who may have an increased risk during the hot weather include: • Older adults, infants and young children • People with chronic illnesses, such as heart or respiratory conditions • People who work or exercise outside • People who live alone • Even folks without air conditioning or adequate air circulation Seniors have particular risks in the summer. These include the following, including descriptions of each: • Sun Burn: Marked by pink or red skin that feels warm or hot to the touch • Heat Exhaustion: Signs include sweating, cool moist skin, high body temperature, weak pulse, possibly fainting and vomiting

• Heat Stroke: Symptoms include a high body temperature and any of the following: weakness, confusion, hot, dry, flushed skin, fast pulse, headache and dizziness If there are people in your life, such as grandparents, friends, or neighbours who may be at risk for heat-related health issues, make sure to check on them regularly during the summer months. Where appropriate, support them or help them make provisions for managing in the heat. A friendly phone call, an email or visit to see how they’re doing will allow you the peace of mind that your loved one is okay. You can also create a hot weather protection plan for them to assure that they’re prepared for the heat. As part of the plan, make sure to address the following: • The location of the closest airconditioned place (shopping centre, library, community centre, etc.) or cooling centre • Knowing the signs and the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke • Having a backup support system, friend or caregiver who can help in case of an emergency.

CAR SAFETY

We’re always being remind-

ed not to leave our pets and children in the car when it’s hot. The same rule applies to anyone, especially seniors. NEVER leave a person or pet in an unattended car.

WHEN AN ALERT IS DECLARED, TAKE ACTION: Encourage those at risk to visit the cool room in their building, or cool public places such as malls, community centres, and libraries, and regularly check on them to make sure they’re managing. Here are some simple tips for seniors to help them cope with the heat: • Encourage them to drink plenty of fluids especially water • Limit activities so that they don’t over-exert themselves • Visit air conditioned spaces, such as malls, shopping centres and the city operated cooling centres • Call for help if they don’t feel well, i.e., if they become ill, faint, have trouble breathing or feel confused or disoriented.
