Just as the kitchen is the heart of a home, so too is it for the nonprofit organization FoodShare which provides healthy food
and food education to communities across Toronto. It is far more than its appliances and cabinets – it’s where FoodShare offers a place, for example, for women receiving breast cancer treatment to
cook together; it’s where young people learn the importance of a healthy diet, not to mention a space where people generally connect. Yet the food agency is gearing up for a move from its current
location in a Toronto District School Board (TDSB) building at Bloor West and Dufferin streets to the Mount Dennis neighbourhood where its new space is lacking a kitchen. At >>>new, page 16
On the cusp of summer vacation, staff, students, and parents at three area elementary schools bid farewell to their long-serving and dedicated crossing guards, Cliff Lewis and Stafford Hope. Wednesday was bittersweet for staff, students, and parents at Runnymede Jr. and Sr. Public School. While excited for the start of summer vacation, they were also saying goodbye to a familiar and friendly face, someone who’s been a fixture in their lives on a daily basis. ‘We’ll miss you, Stafford,’ ‘have fun in Jamaica,’ and ‘enjoy your retirement’, students in kindergarten to Grade 8 and their parents told crossing guard Stafford Hope as he guided them safely across Runnymede Road at Colbeck Street. After 21 years as a crossing guard for the Toronto Police Service (TPS), Hope is hanging up his vest and retiring his stop sign.
