Local accordion player receives West-end composer pens score for upcoming show at Harbourfront Centre gold in Conservatory exams What Goes Between premieres March 12 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com East coast native Joshua Van Tassel got his musical start playing drums in a high school band. It’s no stretch that Van Tassel, a producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist – has turned his passion for music into a career. It has always played a significant role in his life. “My parents are huge music fans – music was always on. They were always going to see shows and concerts,” Van Tassel recalled of his childhood. Artistic genes run in the family – his parents are cobblers. They operate a custom leather works shop in Nova Scotia while one of his sisters is a music therapist and the other is an art teacher. At St. Francis Xavier University where he studied music, Van Tassel had a “really great teacher,” who told him that if he wanted to pursue a career in music, he had to move to a city. In 2001, he enrolled at Humber

premiere of Tracey Norman’s What Goes Between at Harbourfront Centre Theatre, Thursday, March 12 to Saturday, March 14. Van Tassel composed the score for Norman’s piece that delves into the energy that exists between people and its impact on relationships, loss, attraction and decision. “With dance, sometimes there’s not a clear narrative. It’s about trying to portray a feeling,” Van Tassel told The Villager. “That’s kind of what it’s like with this piece.” The Bloor Street West and Ossington Avenue-area resident says it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how long it takes to compose a piece. “It’s hard to put it into hours,” Van Tassel admitted. “Sometimes, I’ll record something that just works. It can range from a week to a year or more.” DanceWorks, billed as Toronto’s longest running contemporary dance series, presents Norman’s What Goes Between as part of a double bill alongside Marie France Forcier’s Scars are All the Rage later this month.

Lithuania Park name not going to change

Discover the Toronto Time Capsule online

A day for the bees

Proposal had been to rename it ‘Oakmount Park’ Etobicoke York Community Council voted against renaming Lithuania Park to Oakmount Park at its February meeting. The decision was made based on the lack of community consensus. Toronto Parks, Forestry, and Recreation division reviewed the proposal to rename Lithuania Park, situated at 155 Oakmount Rd.’ to Oakmount Park. While the proposal met the policy criteria of the council-approved ‘Honourific and Street Naming Policy,’ public consultation indicated that it did not have widespread support in the community. Originally named Oakmount Park, the name was changed in 1973 to Lithuania Park by Toronto City Council in honour of the contribution made by the Lithuanian community to the city. In January 2013, Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette received a petition signed by more than 120 area residents requesting the name change. In September of that year, the Lithuanian community submitted a petition with 300 signatures to retain the Lithuanian Park name. The Parks, Forestry and Recreation division proposed an alternative to satisfy the broader community by maintaining the park name and naming the sports field within Lithuania Park the ‘Oakmount Sports Field.’ A survey of area residents concluded almost 50 per cent were opposed to both the original and the alternative naming proposal.

Still waiting for benefit of Tory’s magic Rolodex to materialize O

ne of the most resonant of the points hammered at by 2014 mayoral candidate John Tory was his belief that Toronto could not solve its very significant problems on its own. The federal and provincial government would need to “come to the table” and pay a significant share of the cost of public housing, public transportation and infrastructure improvement. It was hard to argue with that premise – the property tax base is a lousy way to finance a city as big as a middle-sized province – and also hard to be too skeptical of Tory’s boasts, that he above all other candidates had the capacity to draw reluctant premiers and prime ministers to that table. Tory has fostered a great deal of non-partisan

david nickle the city

goodwill, after all – particularly compared to his predecessor the congenitally partisan Rob Ford. One can’t say whether anyone else would have done much better. But Tory’s relationships so far have borne little fruit. Indeed, every time Toronto goes to the table with the province it seems like Toronto gets saddled with the check. Like previous examples – the $86 million in housing pooling, the $75 million in LRT sunk costs – the latest imposition emerged during the 2015 budget process. It turns out that Toronto taxpayers owe nearly $100 million to Metrolinx for the Union Pearson Express rail

project that Toronto property taxpayers understood themselves to have nothing to do with. It turns out that wasn’t the case, at all. When Metrolinx builds a rail line through a municipality and has to make upgrades and changes to municipal infrastructure, the cost of that work falls on the municipality. And there was a lot of infrastructure rejigging that needed to be done to get that rail line — a rail line that’s pretty much exclusively for the use of air travellers staying in or near downtown Toronto, and priced at $30 a ticket. A rail line that, in other words, doesn’t really provide that much benefit to commuters who live and travel within Toronto. Now, this charge didn’t magically appear as Mayor

Tory took office; city staff have known for years there would be a reckoning. In the same way, it was the Ford-era council that decided to change directions on the Scarborough subway and toss away $75 million in sunk costs, and it was Ford whose bluster failed to convince the province to stick to its original schedule on the housing pooling fund. But by the same token, the magic Rolodex Tory promised to bring to the mayor’s office hasn’t been nearly as effective as originally advertised – at least when it comes to swaying the provincial government to take provincial action on matters important to the city.

Parking permit regulation needed: resident To the editor: Re: ‘Resident irked city doesn’t post signage about three-hour parking limit,’ Community, Feb. 3. The three-hour limit is explained on the City of Toronto website. I have made requests to have signage installed for the sake of clarity, but nothing has happened. As for commuter parking, it is not

taken care of as letter writer Brendon Hemily argues. For streets that are not a one-hour limit, good luck in getting the default three-hour limit enforced. Commuter parkers know this and park all day on permit streets. It’s frustrating to pay for a parking permit and not be able to park on your street because of those who

use it for free parking for eight to 10 hours a day or more. Finally, there would be more visitor permits available if the city took a look at the number of people who have legitimate parking pads and still retain a permit, thus limiting the number of permits available both on a permanent and temporary basis. I. Engel

Lots of questions, Toronto should fine negligent no answers yet homeowners and snow shovellers To the editor: As a retired teacher I have been most interested to hear about the new course for sex education. However, there has been no mention how this will be implemented. Will teachers be taken out of their classes to attend courses for teaching these new aspects or will they merely be confronted with the new syllabus with instructions to “teach this”? Also who will be responsible for the teaching in high schools; the home room teacher? The physed teacher? There are still many questions to be answered and explained. Marian Yorke

To the editor: Re: ‘City’s ‘unspoken’ parking rule a slap to visitors,’ Community, Feb. 12 In response to Lesley McClellan’s letter, I remember my annoyance the first time I got my over three-hour parking ticket. It was then that I discovered that this bylaw is indeed on the books, but there isn’t any signage to indicate it. Of course, it’s yet another cash grab by the city. Referencing McClellan’s further remarks about snow, I would put forth that the city could earn extra revenue by imposing fines upon homeowners who shovel the snow off their property onto the street,

thereby reducing the number of street parking spots. I have a narrow driveway between mine and my neighbour’s house that runs the full depth of my property, and not one grain of snow goes onto the street. It goes where it belongs: on our front and back lawns. On another note, how about a fine for the people who never clear their sidewalks? I walk by homes all the time that have uncleared sidewalks and I know for a fact that there are teenagers living in the house. It would take them a maximum of 10 minutes to clear the sidewalks. John Hughes

Armenians, Turks both affected by violent conflict a century ago: reader To the editor: Re: ‘High Park artist channels Armenian genocide onto canvas to raise awareness,’ News, Jan. 29 I read this article with interest and believe your readers deserve to be made aware of some facts and the context in which these events occurred 100 years ago. I believe it is historically verifiable that prior to the First World War, in the late 19th century, nationalistic Armenians in Europe and in Russia, provoked and armed by the Russians, were already planning an insurgency against the Ottoman Turks, with the intent of carving out a state of ‘Armenia’ in northeastern Anatolia. While Armenians were killed in the course of the conflict in which my father served as an Ottoman reserve officer in the Caucuses, so were thousands of Muslims. If civilian Armenians were displaced from the area of conflict in the eastern provinces, it was intended for their own protection. The Ottoman census prior to 1915 indicates the population of Anatolia consisted of 13,390,000 Muslims, 1,564,939 Greeks and 1,173,422 Armenians. It is therefore implausible that two

million Armenians were massacred, as is often claimed. Somehow with each retelling of this tragic chapter of history, the number of Armenian victims tends to increase steadily. The term genocide has come to characterize these events, even though historians continue to discuss records and claims regarding what occurred in the midst of this bitter conflict and its aftermath. In April 2006, following a vote in the House of Commons on a Bloc Québécois motion, these events were recognized by the Canadian government as genocide. The vote was by no means unanimous and many MPs were notably absent. No one denies that tens of thousands of Armenians were tragically affected by First World War events in which their nationalistic brethren, in collaboration with the Russians, were essentially the instigators and aggressors. But it’s important that Armenians publicly recognize that tens of thousands of Turkish-Muslim soldiers, civilians, men, women and children were also killed, brutalized, displaced and orphaned by the same events. Police officers were unavailable to offer security at event >>>from page 1 Avenue will celebrate business, community, arts and culture, with the annual festival on Saturday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 23. Regardless of the date change, “we think it’ll be a great festival,” said Dyan Marie, creative director of Big on Bloor. At its Annual General Meeting in early February,

festival organizers were informed by local police that officers would not be able to provide a presence at the community event due to the Games. “If we couldn’t get police officers, we couldn’t close the street, which means we wouldn’t be able to get insurance,” Marie explained. Each year, the festival shuts down Bloor Street West

between Dufferin Street and Lansdowne Avenue. Marie said she anticipates less traffic in August because lots of people are away on summer holidays. She is encouraging everyone to mark their calendars with the new date. “People who are staying (in the city) will have a great time,” she said. “This year, we’ll have more cultural programming.”

The festival typically attracts as many as 80,000 people each year. The event includes the community appreciation BIG Awards, a BIG market place with more than 200 arts, crafts and information tables, a CardYard with recycled materials animated by architecture, art and poetry, main stage performance, games for both children and adults and Savour Bloor – in stores, restaurants, patios and the Bloordale Food Court. Festival planning meetings take place on the first Wednesday of the month at New Horizons, 1140 Bloor St. W. at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Improvement Area (BIA) chair Alex Ling said the date does not interfere with the Games’ scheduling and attendance. “We were looking ahead,” Ling told The Villager. “With the Pan Am Games in mind, we booked July 11 and got our permits.” The annual festival, hosted by the BIA, will see the closure of two side streets north of

Bloor Street West and three south of Bloor Street for stage shows, food, strolling entertainment, a sidewalk sale, activity centres, carnival games and inflatables. This is a free event for the entire family.

The search on Saturday is open to the public. Anyone interested in taking part is asked to meet at the Grenadier Restaurant in High Park at 9:30 a.m. Eva says Judy had no friends her family was aware of and she doesn’t know if her sister met up with anyone. She suffers from Schizophrenia and is possibly not taking her medication. When not on her medication, Judy is not capable of taking care of herself, Eva said. “She has no income, no

We’re very worried, especially because February was one of the coldest months.” Judy was supposed to meet someone from High Park Manor for coffee on the morning of Jan. 27, however, she declined, said her sister. Fourth new streetcar enters service Plans set for the 41-day torch relay The newest of the new streetcars had its first official trip earlier this week Car 4405 officially entered service Monday, March 2 on the 510 Spadina line. It’s the fourth of the new fleet under manufacture by Bombardier. Toronto’s deployment of the new fleet to replace the three-decades-old streetcars is going far slower than expected. Bombardier blames the delay on the effects of a 2014 strike at its Thunder Bay plant and technical issues with the low-floor vehicles’ retractable accessibility ramp. TARDY PASS found at subway STATIONS wTTC

Toronto commuters have had to endure a harsh winter marked by frequent transit delays and lengthy waits for service to be restored. Now it seems an unknown rider was fed-up enough to create a TTC Tardy Pass, copies of which were found in the subway over the weekend, demanding reasons for the latest delay. The form gives a

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT long list of choices to select for a service hold-up. While not official, it does encourage riders to get actual TTC staff to fill out and sign the form which could then be presented to an employer to excuse tardiness. Visit www.imgur.com/ K4AKURD to view the pass. CYCLING TO TRANSIT ON UPSWING wSTATIONS

A study undertaken by the group Bike to Transit shows a marked increase in the number of people choosing two wheels over four to get to work. The 2014 Cycle-Transit user survey ( www.tinyurl. com/nfx3rnr ) found 72 per cent of respondents either commuted via bicycle for the first time last summer or had been doing so two to five years prior. The study, released in late February, also found cycling to transit stations in

the Greater Toronto Area has doubled over the last three years. PRO ATHLETES PREFER THE BETTER WAY He scored few goals for the blue and white but newly departed Maple Leaf David Clarkson was a winner – at least when it came to taking transit. Clarkson made a point of regularly taking the Better Way, something which was pointed out in a discussion thread on Reddit Toronto following his trade last week to the Columbus Blue Jackets. His preference of subways over sports cars was most notably featured on a 2013 episode of the HBO hockey series 24/7. Perhaps the Toronto proathlete most synonymous with public transit is Matt “Red Rocket” Bonner, who as his nickname suggests, frequently took the TTC while playing for the Raptors.
