High Park Zoo gets set for March Break Looking for a place to take the kids during March Break? The llama pen at the High Park Zoo will be open to the public on Saturday, March 9 through to Sunday, March 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be various activities in addition to the opportunity to feed the llamas. Zoo colouring books, buttons and peacock feathers will be available for a small donation. All funds will go towards keeping the beloved family spot open. For the second year in a row, the Honey Family Foundation has pledged to match dollar for dollar a maximum of $50,000. ‘double your money’ “It’s time to double your money,” said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, who encouraged everyone to make a donation to torontoparksandtrees.org/high-park-zoo Since February of last year, residents have donated more than $100,000 towards saving the zoo. Meanwhile, Friends of High Park Zoo, the advocacy group formed in response to keep the tourist attraction open, raised more than $139,000. Residents will be able to double their donation until June 15. To operate in 2013, the zoo needs $228,000, which is funded only by public donations. ~ Lisa Rainford

Students in teacher Chris Higgins’ class at Swansea Junior and Senior Public School are researching and tweeting the history of their school to be presented during Education week in May.
Swansea students tweet for grades Teens research information from school archives to reveal surprising history LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Grade 8 students at Swansea Public School were shocked to learn that in 1912, a teacher
used a particularly unorthodox method of discipline. Classmates Nevine Gacich, Mike Koc and Atka Kahtib discovered more than a century ago that when a chatty student
wouldn’t stop talking, the teacher tied the child’s jaw shut. In their research, the three also unearthed that being lefthanded was frowned upon. Students who naturally held a
pencil in their left hands were forced to have their left-hands tied behind their backs. Being a lefty wasn’t “proper,” said Gacich. >>>STUDENTS, page 13
