Whether they would prefer to see a tunnel or are in support of an overpass, residents should remain united in their quest to hold Metrolinx accountable as plans for the Davenport Diamond Grade Separation Project move forward, the president of a community association said. Matt Park, who helms the Davenport Village Community Association, representing a neighbourhood of 3,800 young professionals living near Davenport Road and Lansdowne Avenue, was one of the guest speakers at a public meeting hosted by BIG (Big Improvement Group) last Wednesday evening. The meeting brought together community groups that are impacted by the proposed Davenport Diamond project and included a presentation by Metrolinx representatives. “I don’t think there are different sides here,” Park pointed out to the small, but attentive audience gathered at New Horizons Tower, at Bloor West and Dufferin streets. “We’re all working for the benefit of the community.” A six-month Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) is >>>residents, page 13

FoodShare readies for The Great Big Crunch Annual event seeks to promote healthy snacking LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s billed as an annual moment of anti-silence. The Great Big Crunch is a harmonious, synchronized bite out of fresh, local produce – like apples or carrots – celebrated Canada-wide to mark Nutrition Month. Organized by FoodShare – a national non-profit organization, based out of the Bloor and Dufferin streets area, whose vision is ‘Good Healthy Food for All’ – it takes place today at 2:30 p.m. With about a week to go before the festivities, as many as 120,000 people had signed up, according to FoodShare’s Katie German, field to table schools manager. Established nine years ago, the Great Big Crunch was inspired by a FoodShare staffer, who was riding a quiet subway train when she took a bite out of an apple. “It made a loud noise and everyone looked at her,” German told The Villager. The Great Big Crunch is “a bit of silly and fun, but lowcost and easy,” she said of the event’s appeal. In its first year, 25,000 people signed up to take part. That number has grown as large as more than 180,000 last year – more than 750,000 since its inception in 2006. The cross-Canada crunch serves as a way to celebrate and enjoy healthy snacking while highlighting the availability of local produce yearround through activities like cooking and tasting, nutrition, soil and composting, sustainability and community development and the like. Locally, German will be visiting two kindergarten classes at nearby Brock Public School to engage students in apple and honey tasting and worm

exploration, she said. “Schools do whatever they want whether it’s just the crunch or a school-wide assembly in the gymnasium,” German said. “A Francophone school in New Brunswick has signed up 9,000 people and one in Thunder Bay signed up 8,000.” In Thunder Bay, they’ll be biting into carrots because the root vegetable is more readily available right now. Schools are encouraged to participate in any way that’s best suited to them, German said. “A lot of schools sign up year after year,” she said, adding that the event shows that local food is still available at this time of year, particularly storage crops like carrots, beets, potatoes, apples, squash and onions. “The prime minister is on board,” German said of the Great Big Crunch. “We’re excited about having a crunch taking place in Ottawa this year.” Getting involved is simple. Register online to munch with FoodShare on crunch day – sign up yourself, your class, your school or entire school board. FoodShare shares fun, curriculum-linked class activities while recommending fresh, local produce to snack on. Don’t forget to share crunch photos on social media using #greatbigcrunch. “We’ll help share their stories,” German said. For further details, visit foodshare.net/program/ crunch

City planning controlled burn in High Park The City of Toronto Urban Forestry is planning to undertake a controlled burn in High Park in early spring 2016. Weather and onsite ground conditions are currently being monitored by city staff and burn consultants to determine the appropriate time window for a controlled burn. Once ideal weather conditions are achieved and a burn date has been selected the public will be notified 24 to 48 hours prior to ignition. A controlled burn is a deliberately set and carefully

controlled fire that burns low to the ground and consumes dried leaves, small twigs and grass stems, but does not harm larger trees. Controlled burns are part of Urban Forestry’s long-term management plan to restore and protect Toronto’s rare Black Oak woodlands and savannahs. Fire-dependent ecosystems, like Black Oak savannahs, contain prairie plants that respond positively to controlled burning and grow more vigorously than they would in the absence

of fire. Under ideal weather conditions, the smoke from the prescribed burn will rise and not negatively affect surrounding neighbourhoods. It is possible, however, that weather conditions could change and smoke from burning vegetation could impact residential areas near the park. It is recommended that all residents close windows or leave the immediate area at the time of the burn to avoid any potential sensitivity to the smoke. For more information,

please visit www.toronto.ca/ trees, or call 311. go forward one hour this sunday wClocks

Spring’s coming. One sure sign is the change to Daylight Savings Time. This weekend, turn your clocks one hour forward before turning in Saturday night. Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 13 at 2 a.m. Sunrise and sunset will be one hour later than the day before.

Spring forward, and make road safety a priority

Write us

L

ike every year just before daylight saving time, there’s a reminder to set the clocks forward one hour. But during this time of year, there should be another equally, if not more, important reminder for drivers: watch out for pedestrians. The extra hour of sunlight and the coinciding warmer temperatures outside are sure to result in more people out and about enjoying everything the city has to offer. Residents will be populating patios and parks again as the spring-like weather entices them out of their winter slumber. And expect to see more children, too, as students look to our view participate in activities outside of school during March Break Everyone next week. One traffic fatality is one too needs to pay many; as recently as last Friday, attention a pedestrian was fatally struck near Queen and Jarvis streets downtown. In 2015, there were nearly 40 pedestrian deaths of the 64 total traffic fatalities, according to Toronto police. As the police note in their “do the bright thing” pedestrian safety YouTube message, road safety is a shared responsibility and all road users have an important role to play. “It is clear that all of these traffic fatalities were preventable,” adds Supt. Gord Jones of Toronto police Traffic Services in the video. So for pedestrians, be alert and get rid of any distractions – like listening to music or a podcast on your cellphone – when crossing the road. The same goes for drivers with distracted driving still a major issue. If the fines set for driving and texting aren’t enough of a deterrent, take a look again at the sobering statistics of traffic fatalities. Here’s a reminder for drivers: as of this year, motorists must yield the entire road to pedestrians when approaching crosswalks and school crossings, and wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road. Both pedestrians and drivers will do well to slow down, and with the imminent arrival of spring, just breathe in the fresh air and relax.

Tory puts good face on broken promises Mayor John Tory started Tuesday morning with a visit to the Regent Park Aquatic Centre. Well, he started the public part of Tuesday morning in Regent Park. It was 10 a.m. when he showed up with Councillor James Pasternak, the community development and recreation committee chair, and Councillor Pam McConnell in tow. If his publicly touted schedule held true, this was something closer to the noon-hour for him, as Tory famously likes to start work sixish. It is one of the things voters are said to like about him. Tory would do well to remind voters of the reasons they like him. This week, he has had to manage a fairly significant retreat from the argument he’d made to voters in 2014, to persuade them to cast their vote his way. Tory had spent the election swearing up and down that he would deliver a fast and affordable heavy rail rapid transit line called SmartTrack, with 15 new stops along a

david nickle the city 53-kilometre route crossing the city, and had scoffed at naysayers who raised questions about whether the plan was even possible. On Monday, the longawaited report from city manager Peter Wallace, looking at a broad range of public transit options for Toronto, arrived with a thud. Wallace’s report deals with a number of things, but deep in the middle of it is a recognition that Tory’s SmartTrack plan as sold to the public simply isn’t possible. What is possible? No more than eight stations financed by the city, to enhance existing plans by Metrolinx to expand GO service along the rail lines. And no heavy rail in the west end through Etobicoke, but light rail instead. The overall transit plan laid out by Wallace in his detailed report to the executive committee is, in many respects, a vast improvement on Tory’s

SmartTrack plans, and on Tuesday morning Tory tried to make the case he is, in fact, delivering more, not less. “This optimized plan will provide more transit for Toronto than I promised in the election,” he said. “In this case I’ll be delivering more overall.” It is technically true: to paper over the deficiencies in Tory’s plan, staff have recommended far more public transit in some areas; the downtown relief line that was notably not a priority in Tory’s campaign is in, and more light rail along the Eglinton Crosstown line. But it has undeniably scaled back the specific transit improvements Tory promised in all those SmartTrack stations, and the three-stop Scarborough subway that will now be reduced to a single stop. Will anyone care about these broken promises? Tory seemed to think they wouldn’t. And he may be right. Still, it was either good

strategy or good luck that a day before the Wallace report landed on the desks of executive committee members, Tory was able to make the sort of announcement he’s been fond of. As early as next fall, Tory promised, it will be easier to sign up for recreation programs than it is now, and next year, the antiquated computer system that keeps kids out of city summer camps and swimming lessons will be entirely replaced. That sounds like an entirely achievable promise – as achievable as pushing the TTC to sell tokens using Interac machines, or towing cars parked illegally during rush hour, other incremental but noticeable improvements that Tory has brought about. In times like these, that is something I imagine our early-bird mayor would like us to remember.

The City of Toronto has created a new web page that allows residents to track local snow plowing efforts. You can see the location of plows, sidewalk plows and salt trucks and when individual streets were serviced by the City’s winter operations crews. DiNovo fights provincial plan to hike drug benefit deductible >>>from page 1 deductible almost double and they’ll pay a dollar more for each prescription they get filled, starting this summer. For seniors on a fixed income these costs are going to add up fast.” Already, seniors have been telling DiNovo how carefully they must plan their budgets. “Increasing drug costs will throw that planning into further chaos,” she said. “I’m worried that as costs increase that we will see more and more seniors that can’t afford to take the medication they need to stay healthy.” While many seniors will be supportive of the Liberal government’s plan to increase the income thresholds for low-income seniors, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), a national advocacy organization that serves the needs of Canadians 50 years and older,

Photo/GREGORY BENNETT

Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo.

says its members will be disappointed to learn about the changes to the Ontario Drug Benefit program. The annual deductible will increase from $100 to $170 and the co-payments will increase from $6.11 to $7.11 per prescription for many others, it highlighted. “This increase will have a significant negative impact on many seniors whose income is just above the threshold

and who are dependent on multiple prescription drugs to manage their chronic conditions,” CARP vice-president of advocacy and COO Wanda Morris said in a statement. Seniors whose income is $19,500 annually will see their Ontario Drug Benefit deductible almost double. “The NDP is asking the government to rescind that change,” DiNovo said. “The government said they’d look into it, but there’s no guarantee they’ll change it.” When people don’t take their medication, it can lead to declining health, which means more seniors in hospital instead of thriving in their own homes, she said. “The people who will find it even harder to pay for the medication they need are our parents, grandparents, our friends. They’re the people who have helped build this province and they deserve respect.”

Residents threaten to leave Davenport neighbourhood if bridge option chosen >>>from page 1 underway. Metrolinx’s preferred option is to build an elevated twotrack bridge, christened The Guideway, to address the congestion on the Davenport Diamond rail crossing where GO Transit and CP freight trains converge. The bridge, Metrolinx says, is necessary in order to double the existing service on the Barrie corridor. Re g a rd l e s s o f t h e fact that Toronto City Council voted against the proposed bridge in December, Metrolinx decided to go ahead with the TPAP. “We’ve committed to working with residents and the city to bring our positions as close as possible,” Metrolinx spokesperson Manuel Pedrosa said. “The conversation will be ongoing.” The project’s investment has grown from $140 million to $210 million in order to enhance the bridge design and the public realm. Influenced by recommendations made by a community reference group, the bridge design will include a skylight, which will allow for natural light and greenery below, according to Metrolinx chief design excellence officer Beth Kapusta. It will also

include different qualities of stainless steel. “Safety is a huge design consideration therefore an LED strip will be embedded in the outside edge,” she said. There will be living green spaces that connect to Bloor Street to the south and Dupont Street to the north, Kapusta said. “There will be opportunity for pop-ups, community programming, and bike rings,” she said. The goal is to create a community advisory committee to discuss the design and public realm, Kapusta added. As far as the Davenport Village Community Association is concerned, “we want absolute design excellence,” Park said. Electrification of the corridor is key, as is station access, he said, calling on Metrolinx to build a GO station at St. Clair Avenue West and Caledonia Road. “I think there’s an issue of communication between Metrolinx and Toronto. You need to engage with us in a holistic way,” Park said. “We’re going to hold you accountable each and every step of the way.” A group called Options for Davenport, which opposes an elevated over-

pass through the middle of a residential neighbourhood, has launched its own environmental assessment to investigate the bridge and alternatives. It is gathering responses to a survey and canvassing door-todoor. “Forty per cent of people said they would move out of the neighbourhood (if the bridge is built),” said Sam Barbieri, a member of Options for Davenport. Davenport MPP Cristina Martins said many constituents have told her they will move. It’s her mission to articulate to Metrolinx that the Davenport community deserves “the best damn project.” “Don’t take us for granted. The discussion is ongoing. I want to assure you that from where I stand, the dialogue will continue so we won’t have people moving out.”
