Artist hopes to uncover fate of missing paintings
Crafts for St. Patrick’s WWF Canada
names Roncy resident team co-captain of Earth Hour
One art piece priced at $3,500

It’s no surprise to those who know her that Roncesvalles Village resident Karyn Klaire Koski has been chosen the Ontario team co-captain of this year’s Earth Hour celebration by WWF Canada. “Earth Hour is a passion for me,” Koski told The Villager. “I’m a dedicated environmental advocate, a keen person. I do more philanthropy work than my real job.” Klaire has been instrumental in organizing the Earth Hour celebration over the past three years in Roncesvalles Village in addition to her work as part of the environmental advocacy group Green 13. She helped see that a century-old, majestic, silver maple along Roncesvalles Avenue achieve heritage status and was awarded The Planet in Focus Green Screen Award, which celebrates compelling and innovative behind-thescenes stories of green practices in the film and TV industry. The film and television producer and editor of an interactive magazine app says she’s not a fan of such phrases as ‘war against,’ ‘battle with’ or >RONCESVALLES, page 14
She is less concerned that they’re missing and more concerned that they’re alright. Most of all, artist Tennille Rose Will would love to find out what happened to two of her paintings, which were hanging on the wall at the Rhino Restaurant and Bar on Queen Street West, just west of Dufferin Street. The paintings, said Will, whose studio is on Dundas Street West at Brock Street, disappeared over the
summer or fall. ‘Lullaby,’ which depicts two women, took Will three months to paint. Priced at $3,500 – the canvas alone cost $300, it is a six feet by six feet painting. “Someone went in, took it off the wall and walked out,” said Will at her studio recently. “Did someone throw it out? Was it a joke? As long as I know it’s loved, I don’t feel so bad.” The other, called ‘Stillness,’ is 26 by 30 inches priced between $500 and $600. “I was kind of in shock,” >>>LOCAL, page 17
MPP Jonah Schein calls for electrification clarification RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Davenport MPP Jonah Schein wants more than assurances from the province on electrifying the Union-Pearson air rail link by 2017. Both current transportation minister Glen Murray and his
predecessor Bob Chiarelli, as well as Metrolinx, have indicated completing electric conversion of the line from diesel is possible by 2017. But Schein, the NDP’s transportation critic, insists there needs to be more than just words. >>>TARGET, page 5

A four-alarm fire on Osler Street sent one man to hospital and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage on the evening of Sunday, March 10. Firefighters arrived at 181 Osler St., near Davenport Road, just after 7 p.m. to find smoke and flames billowing from a set of row houses, according to Capt. Adrian Ratushniak. Initially a three-alarm fire, the blaze was upgraded to four-alarm and required 80 firefighters and 20 trucks to extinguish. “At this point, the fire marshal is investigating,” said Ratushniak on Monday morning. Four homes were damaged by the fire, one by smoke, he said. A man was rushed to hospital with smoke inhalation. The cause has yet to be determined. “We haven’t even been inside. The roof collapsed,” said Ratushniak. “Likely, we won’t find out a cause very soon.” Initial reports indicated the fire originated in the “basement back area,” he said. – Lisa Rainford

public Library offering ‘buy’ option The Toronto Public Library has come up with a unique fundraising twist that offers visitors to its website the opportunity to buy the book they’re looking for. When browsing for books, library customers will be able to select a ‘buy now’ option that will link them to Indigo’s website when there is a copy available to buy. Additional retailers will be added shortly. The library will receive a portion of the sale price, and will use these funds to support its collections and services. “We’re happy to offer this innovative program,” said Paul Ainslie, chair of the Toronto Public Library Board. “We know that many library customers do a mix of borrowing books from the library and buying their own copies. It’s great to give those customers the opportunity to purchase books and at the same time support their library.” A s a l w a y s , To r o n t o Public Library encourages Torontonians to borrow materials from its collection of more than 11 million items including books, ebooks, CDs and DVDs in 40 languages.

W
ith the impacts of the change back to daylight saving time and the anticipated increase of cars and pedestrians on the streets due to March Break, Toronto police have launched a safety campaign this week. The March Break - March Safe Pedestrian Campaign will run through to Sunday. Though already planned, this week’s campaign has been made all the more meaningful by the death of five-year-old Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger on Cliffside Drive in Scarborough. Kayleigh died instantly last Thursday after being struck by a garbage truck while she was crossing the road with other children while on her way home from school. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the incident. Her death has touched all Torontonians: drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike. The consequences are most often tragic and devastating. Sadly, this past weekend did not get much better on our streets. On Sunday, a cyclist suffered serious head injuries after being struck by a car on Bloor Street West, and a North York man suffered our view broken legs after he was struck by a vehicle. Police launch Part of the police’s message this week is that safety is everyone’s March safety responsibility, and using caution in all circumstances is the best campaign approach while on the roads. Part of the campaign will include increased enforcement of traffic violations committed by drivers, cyclists or pedestrians that threaten safety. Parking officers will also be out dealing with vehicles parked in ways that might impact safety. Police will also be paying extra attention to unsafe behaviour in intersections, at crosswalks and by pedestrians crossing streets mid-block. This week’s campaign comes on the heels of a Toronto Police and GO Transit campaign urging pedestrians to Do the Bright Thing and make themselves more visible to drivers. Const. Hugh Smith pointed out that pedestrians taking actions to protect themselves was not a case of blaming them for being hit by vehicles. We believe everyone using our roads has an equal share of responsibility when it comes to the safety of others and themselves. Drivers must always be keenly aware of the surroundings, following the traffic laws at intersections and not speeding, while pedestrians and cyclists need to improve their visibility and be vigilant. Together we can hopefully avoid more tragedies.

Don’t bet on casino debate any time soon Gridlock david nickle worsening
A
s we all struggle to pull our minds from the gutter of (alleged) sleaze, bad behaviour and public lewdness that emerged last week at and around city hall, it’s worth remembering that Toronto council has a major policy debate on its plate this spring: whether or not to host a casino. Right now, the debate is alleged too. It was to have occurred in the coming weeks, once staff delivered a final report to the executive committee and then to council. It will be a bit later than that, we learned Friday; the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has been slow in providing the necessary information to make a rational decision on the matter. The best current information we have on the benefits of a casino comes in the form of a hard-sell pitch from MGM Resorts International and Cadillac Fairview to turn much of Exhibition Place into a giant resort and gambling
the city
complex. The casino would bring 10,000 jobs, they say — good paying jobs with an average income of $60,000. It would revitalize the city’s waterfront around Exhibition Place and Ontario Place with new foot bridges, and spur massive transit improvements to and from the site. And on the subject of admission to what is left of the Canadian National Exhibition ... the casino would have it covered, for the next 10 years and maybe even longer. Of course, none of that’s set in stone — or even in a remotely binding document. Like all the best pitches, the MGM-Cadillac Fairview proposition gives plenty of impetus for an irrational decision. Right now, the rationalism is all on the “no” side. The city’s medical officer of health has weighed in with a report indicating
that the adverse effects of a casino on gambling addicts would outweigh any benefits in terms of employment and economic stimulus. Developers in the downtown have joined small businesses there in arguing that a casino is the last thing that the city needs from an economic stimulus point of view. And that report from staff hanging in the air still hasn’t been able to pin down what kind of annual hosting fee Toronto might expect — which is the final demonstrable public benefit that might tip the balance, if it’s large enough. Whenever that report comes out, there will be the question facing council: is a certain amount of suffering among a demographic of addicts and their family worth it, for an annual boost to the city’s coffers? It’s a moral question, and fundamentally an ugly one. Answer it badly... and that gutter beckons.

David Nickle is The Villager’s city hall reporter. His column runs every Thursday.
To the editor: The gridlock in Toronto is getting worse every year. Our streets are plugged, which, by some estimates, is costing the local economy $6 billion a year. To add LRTs would be insane and only make things worse. The obvious answer is to build subways to take the load off aboveground roads. The subways that were built in the ’50s and ’60s have served us well and are still doing it now and will do it in future. Let’s get busy and produce a proposal that solves our public transport problem once and for all. All large cities have regional public transport systems and all of them have subways, which have served them well. S. Suurmann

Target date for completing electrification of air rail link is 2017 >>>from page 1 “We’re looking for a firm commitment, a promise we will have electric trains,” said Schein. Last Wednesday, Schein asked Murray to confirm 2017 as a completion date for electrifying the future rapid transit link between Union Station and Terminal One of Pearson International Airport, currently under construction.
Pressed for an answer, Murray would only say he and York South-Weston colleague Laura Albanese are working hard to get electrification completed by the date. “I have learned in my political life to quite frankly underpromise and over-deliver on things,” said Murray during Question Period at Queen’s Park. That’s not acceptable to
residents living along the Georgetown GO rail corridor who are worried about increased diesel train traffic from the air rail link, said Schein. ‘FIRM COMMITMENT’ “People in the west end have heard this for a number of years and we won’t be satisfied until we actually hear a
firm commitment,” he said. Last week, Schein wrote to Murray’s office requesting an informal meeting between the two. He said he is still waiting to hear back. Despite Metrolinx’s work on an ongoing electrification study and its inclusion in the $34 billion of priority projects the transit planning agency has identified for requiring immediate funding, Schein
said it means nothing. “We keep on hearing it’s possible but there’s been no actual time frame or funding,” he said. The air rail link is scheduled to open in 2015 and, according to Metrolinx, will run the cleanest burning diesel trains possible until it is converted. Murray’s director of communications confirmed 2017 is the target date for complet-
ing electrification of the air rail link. But Annette Phillips said achieving that date would be determined by “technical issues” to be addressed by Metrolinx. “That’s what they are working towards,” said Phillips in an interview. “We will rely on Metrolinx’s best judgement.” Follow Rahul Gupta on Twitter @TOinTransit for more transit stories.

ROAD TESTING TO BEGIN FOR NEW STREETCARS
If you live near the TTC’s Hillcrest facility and are prepared to stay up late you might just catch a glance of the new streetcar. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said a testing version of the new Bombardier vehicle will make its debut on city streets in “the middle of the night.” While no date was given, media speculation suggests the test could happen as early as this month. The testing vehicle, which was manufactured in Thunder Bay, has been housed at Hillcrest, located at 1138 Bathurst St., since last year. The complete vehicle will begin service in late 2014.

What to expect when buying a new home Purchasing a new home is a big decision and can sometimes seem overwhelming. Finding the right location, size and finishes are all exciting parts of choosing the home that’s right for you, but there are many other important steps to consider. Signing the purchase agreement. Once you’ve decided on the right home, your builder will ask you to sign an agreement of purchase and sale. Before you do, make sure you understand the terms of the deal you are signing; what is and isn’t included in the price; and when your closing date will be. It is also important to check that anything promised by your sales representative is reflected in writing. This includes any upgrades you’ve agreed on. Purchase agreements are typically very lengthy documents and the language can be technical and hard to understand. Invest in a lawyer to thoroughly review the document. He or she will act in your best interest and work with you and
the builder to ensure you understand the agreement before signing. Making a deposit. After an agreement is signed, your builder will ask for a deposit or series of payments over time. Deposit protection is a part of your new home’s warranty. It ensures that deposits are protected up to a maximum of $40,000 for freehold homes in the event that your builder goes bankrupt, breaches the purchase agreement or in situations where you are legally entitled to back out of the purchase agreement before closing. Deposits made on condominiums are protected for similar circumstances, up to a maximum of $20,000. Deposit amounts exceeding that are protected under the Condominium Act. If upgrades and extras have been included in your purchase agreement, your builder may ask you to pay for some or all of these items prior to closing. Be aware that many purchase agreements stipulate
that payments for upgrades and extras will not be refunded under any circumstance, so it is a good idea to understand the terms of payment for these items before you agree to them. Closing on your new home. Before you move in to your new home, your builder is required to take you through a pre-delivery inspection, also known as a PDI. At this time you and your builder are looking for any items that are incomplete, damaged, missing, or not operating properly. These should be noted on the PDI form provided by your builder. The PDI should be thorough and not rushed – it’s your opportunity to verify the home’s condition prior to moving in. Noting any problems now may help eliminate disagreements at a later date if there is a dispute about who is responsible for any damage. Tarion’s PDI guide and checklist, available at www.tarion.com, will help you prepare.

Tenderness and tragedy tells the story of The Drawer Boy MARIA TZAVARAS contactus@insidetoronto.com Stories that seem simple on the surface are usually an indication that something more complicated lurks beneath. In the Village Players latest show, The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey, this scenario is revealed in a story that shows that guilt and the silent road to redemption can be a lifelong battle. Still, waters run deep in this story about two bachelors who live and run a farm in rural central Ontario. It’s the summer of 1972, and while Angus (Douglas Tindal) is making a sandwich, he’s interrupted by a knock at the door. It’s a young drama student from Toronto, Miles (Trevor Marlatt), who has asked if he can stay for a couple of weeks to learn about farming, which
is to be included in a play that his drama class is writing for their final project. Angus tells him simply that he needs to ask Morgan (Steve Ness) and in this moment we realize there is something off and childlike about Angus. Morgan, after some apprehension, agrees to let Miles stay, and explains to Miles that Angus suffered a head injury in the war and he’s been taking care of him ever since. Miles accepts this explanation, and the first act is all about the follies of this student and his attempts to learn and integrate into farm life.
It’s the build up of finding out what truth Morgan is hiding that keeps you captivated as it slowly unravels. Some may say the show is about deception, but it truly is about kindness; caring for and shouldering the burden of altering a reality for another’s happiness, is truly a magnificent gift and heavy load, all wrapped up into one. Also, it’s interesting how one twist of fate, like Miles showing up at their door, can be the catalyst to revealing what lay dormant for 30 years, showing every truth comes out eventually.

The show offers special evenings including a Chinese cultural event and St. Patrick’s Day as well as special days highlighting Canadian Wildlife Federation, Metroland Media Day, Tourism Ireland and more. The festival also offers workshops, garden tours, marketplace and “Juno Rocks” Gardens, where JUNO Award nominated and winning artists Feist, Jann Arden, Keshia Chante and Royal Wood and Sarah Slean partnered with professional landscape artists to design and create gardens to reflect their personal styles and tastes. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors, $16 for students (13-18), free for children under 12. Visit www.canadablooms.com for more details.

likeable and you can’t help but feel bad for him in the best way possible. Ness gives such a realistic portrayal of Morgan and for such a tough and weathered farmer, his care for Angus is touching, authentic and such an amazing relationship to witness. Marlatt as Miles evolves as a character, in that he starts off as this green, acting student, but emerges from the farm a more enriched person, and he portrays that change well. As a trio, they are amazing to watch as they act out light-hearted scenes to the more serious ones. It’s a great combination of comedy and tenderness.

Local studio opened in October >>>from page 1 admitted Will, who is grateful to the Rhino for allowing her to exhibit her work without charging a commission. “Someone had to have seen something.” Will wonders if it was taken by someone who wanted it, but couldn’t afford it. She said she would feel better knowing if this was indeed the case. Liz Szynkowski, founder and chair of the Roncy Rocks Music and Arts Festival, which Will is taking part in, said she would love to see Will reunited with her work. “Really, I think that in her heart she is worried about whether or not her paintings are being appreciated,” said Szynkowski. Will opened her studio, “Ro s e W i l l St u d i o,” i n

October. Currently, 10 artists paint and exhibit their work there. She’s trying to
recruit more artists. Each pays $100 per month, which allows them to paint there and provides wall space while providing opportunities to exhibit throughout Toronto. Will has been painting since she was 16, although she says she can’t pinpoint where her artistic leanings come from – her father is a butcher. “When I said I wanted to be a painter, I might as well have said, ‘I don’t want to work,’” said Will with a laugh.
